The guys from Carfection started a series not long ago featuring the best BMW M3 models they could get their hands on. Luckily for us, those were also the best BMW M3 models ever made. We’re, of course, referring to the special editions, cars sometimes so rare you could barely get to see them, let alone drive them on a track. After doing a short clip on the F80 M3 CS, they took a break to ponder which M3 was the best of all time.

It’s a tough decision to make and there isn’t a correct answer to please everyone. That’s because people are looking for different things on their cars. Some buy a Prius because it’s rather cheap to run and sips almost no fuel whatsoever, while for others only the horsepower figure counts, which is why the M3 CS would be the best of them all. However, the guys from Carfection went about it in a different way.

E30 M3

They decided to pick out the things that each did best. This way, you could get a sense of how a perfect M3 would shape up, with a bit of every other car. The number one on their list? The engine. And the winner was the S54 3.2-liter straight six from the E46 M3 CSL. The reason why it climbed above all other engines is because it’s silky smooth, high revving and has a great sound. Then came the looks department and I know some of you will definitely not agree with the fact that he actually chose the E36 M3 for this particular category.

The award for the best brakes went to the F82 M3 CS while the best balance went to the E30 M3, of course. Last but not least, the BMW E92 M3 was deemed the one to take home and I tend to agree. Even though the M3 has become somewhat synonymous with a straight six engine, that V8 is really hard to resist, especially on the GTS.
