One of the big questions to be answered in the years to come will revolve around the new 1 Series. As you probably already know, the 1 Series will migrate from its current, rear-wheel drive setup, to a front-wheel drive one, leaving a beautifully balanced setup behind to become more conformist. It will definitely be a sad day when the 1er will go out of production but that’s life and, in the meantime, people are apparently trying to figure out what it’s going to look like.
The rendering we’re showing you today comes from JB Cars and doesn’t really tick all the right boxes. While the upcoming 1 Series will definitely borrow a lot of cues from its bigger brother, the 3 Series, when it comes out, most of that will happen inside the cabin. It’s expected to see an interior that shares quite a lot with the current 3er but when it comes to the exterior design, things will most likely be different.
That’s because various voices inside BMW’s Munich HQ have repeatedly said in recent interviews that they are trying hard to differentiate their cars more in terms of exterior design. It’s something people have been asking for as replicating the same overall lines on different scales is getting a bit boring. Therefore, to have the 1 Series look like a miniature 3 Series seems like a long shot, to put it mildly.
One thing’s for sure though: we’ll get an M Performance model. The top of the range M135i will not be using a 3-liter straight six mill anymore but it’s bound to be the most exciting car of the range though. It will share the same 2-liter 4-cylinder B48 engine as the current BMW X2 M35i and, most likely, the gearbox and all-wheel drive systems as well. Hopefully, it will be enough to match its rivals in terms of performance.
It’s missing two doors. There will be no 3-door version.
Yup
Not sure it will look like the 3er…at all. It’s the most entry level model and shouldn’t look like a 3er 🤷♂️
That front is overdone.
What’s the point of BMW 1 series with front wheel drive!? No one bought it for the looks, as it never looked good, but for the drive!
Judging by the recent Spy photos front lights will certainly not be of design seen here.
