What initially started as a rumor around Audi’s future plans to offer their super sporty S6 and S7 with diesel engines, it eventually turned into a less sensational topic. According to Car and Driver, quoting Audi’s execs, the Ingolstadt-based company will offer two high-end diesels for their A6 and A7 models.

The two vehicles will feature a highly tuned version of Audi’s 3.0-liter diesel V-6 that should top 300 hp and 450 lb-ft of torque. With the strict U.S. emission regulations, the high-end diesels will be available in Europe only, a similar move made by BMW with their more powerful diesel units.

These diesel-powered A6 and A7 cars will give Audi a rival to models like the BMW 535d, which offers 295 hp and 442 lb-ft, and the Mercedes-Benz CLS350 CDI – 262 hp and 457 lb-ft.

As far as diesel powerplants in the S6 and S7 sporty models, Audi says no plans at the moment. But BMW had something to comment on an M diesel offering. BMW UK product manager James Morrison said the following in a conversation with Autoblog UK:

“We never say never. I don’t think M or BMW are willing to get hooked up in what’s happened in the past. They will always look to the best solution for the best performance and everyday usability.”
