The first-generation Audi A7 was a real showstopper. It looked unlike anything else on the road and became an instant hit with both customers and enthusiasts alike. Even today, all these years later, it still looks great and still turns heads. It wasn’t quite as pretty as the BMW 6 Series Gran Coupe but it was close. So we were a bit skeptical that the new A7 would be able to recapture the good looks of the first-gen. Turns out we were wrong, though, as the new Audi A7 looks great and it just touched down on American soil at the 2018 Detroit Auto Show.
Seen here in white, the new Audi A7 looks fantastic. It’s low and sleek and mean looking, with aggressive lines and sharp creases. In white, you can really see all of the body lines and shadows from its creases, which really looks great. It’s such a unique looking car, as it’s equal parts aggressive, sophisticated and practical. And while some pundits might complain that the new A7 is a bit too evolutionary, and not being a dramatic departure from its predecessor, it makes the current-gen car look positively ancient. It’s still not quite as pretty as the 6er GC but it does make us wish that BMW would make another. Hopefully an 8 Series Gran Coupe gives us the stunner we’re missing.
At the rear, that LED light bar looks superb and the way it pulses and surges makes it look like something from the future. Not only is it great looking but it’s also quite functional, as it will be incredibly easy to read and see for cars behind it. And the way the active rear spoiler deploys directly above that aforementioned light bar looks the business.
Inside, the Audi A7 is very similar to the Audi A8. So it, too, features the new touchscreen-based MMI system. So there’s one touchscreen for the navigation system and entertainment, with the other handling the HVAC controls. While we’d still prefer some sort of physical controls, the touchscreen system works well. We’ll need some more time with it to fully judge how well it works but, for now at least, it has our stamp of approval.
The standard engine in America will be the same 3.0 liter turbocharged V6 found in the Audi S4 and S5, which will make around 350 hp. If you want to get a bit saucier, you can get the Audi S7, which will likely come with a variant of the same 2.9 liter twin-turbocharged V6 that powers the Audi RS5 Coupe, which will make around 450 hp. The upcoming RS7 will likely come with a variant of the 4.0 liter twin-turbocharged V8 found in the Porsche Panamera, which should develop around 550 hp.
The Audi A7 is a great looking car with a tech-filled cabin and promising performance. We can’t wait to get our paws on it and give it a proper test drive.

“The first-generation Audi A7 was a real showstopper. It looked unlike anything else on the road …”
Is this because you are too young to remember the original Dodge Charger or the American Motors Marlin, particularly?
The A7 is aesthetically just an updated shape of both of those cars.
See kids? This 👆is what happens when you inject jenkem into your penis.
At least he knows there are cars beyond the M2. Or A7.
Happy new year Terry. Looking forward to another year of achievement?
“At the rear, that LED light bar looks superb and the way it pulses and surges makes it look like something from the future.”
Kind of like the robot from the show Lost In Space (among appearances in other shows and movies)? That future?
Surely the most exciting tech. innovation since Mercedes Airscarf!
Best looking modern Audi. Very nice, I prefer it over the new Merc CLS – that is for sure.
The Audi is only good to look at, that’s all. The CLS is the better overall package. Don’t let Audi trick you with their flash exterior design and interior decor. Their cars are soulless, numb, and boring to drive.
What an ugly evolution! This is so messy in both design and function.
Your head is really mest up haha
Learn to spell- you fertilized mosquitoe dropping.
I take issue with the wing mirrors.
last gen A7 and TT wing mirrors blended with the color of the car. This looked best on the A7.
Then the A3 came out with door mounted wing mirrors and they added a black trim to it, and this became the new look for every new Audi redesign.
I was hoping this wouldn’t happen to the A7 because that was what stood it out from the rest.
Now this new A7 looks no better than the A5 Sportback.
waow ! Not an audi lover but this is sharp
someone might cut themselves if they touch that car! so many sharp lines x)
The thing with Audi is that they’ve stuck with this design language for so long that they’ve learned to use it properly. These cars really don’t look like much in photos, but you do notice them in the flesh. This should be a real head turner…
They do turn heads but that’s about all they’re good for. Audis, even this A7, are known for their extremely numb steering, poor handling/driving dynamics. Not to mention their very bad or unreliable engines. They are not fun or a joy to drive at all and they (Audi) know this so they try to blind-side buyers with flashy headlights, swishy exterior designs and interior decor. Got to give them kudos for mastering this design language though.
As both an Audi and BMW fan i really like the A7 and the 6GT while both may not be the best looking I’d probably take the A7 over the GT if I needed a hatch, but honestly the 6GC is the best looking car in the class hands down, another dissapointment of the Audi is the new MMI system, its all touchscreen, why would they abandon the great touchpad/click wheel that works so well for two large distracting screens, like people may complain about Bmw’s lack of interior design, but i like the simplistic look and easibility of buttons and knobs
I agree that the touchscreen is annoying but I must say it’s one of the easier ones to use. It requires a pretty hefty touch to make anything happen, so there won’t be too many accidental presses. Also, there’s a very distinct audible click, as if you were actually pressing a button and Audi has made that click sound so real and mechanical that I actually though the whole screen was moving and making the noise. It’s not perfect but it’s not bad either.
A7 great looking car? If you said this few years ago, I would definetly agree with you, but since we’re in 2018, absolutely no. Ok, it looks really agressive and sharp and it has great technology, but in terms of design, I think it’s one of the ugliest Audis ever. It’s not as bad as new A8, but still, not a pretty car. If you put side-to-side last-gen A8 and A7 and new-gen A8 and A7, last ones look like piece of arts compared to new ones.
NOTE: This is MY OPINION, so if you’re butthurt, don’t even reply to me.
It will definitely be a head-turner but, like most of Audi’s design product these days, it’s also soulless. Not unlike modern architecture, it looks really neat, but I wouldn’t want to live in it. That said, I like that Audi is pushing hard on design even if I’m not a big fan of the results.
As for the new MMI, the pictures tell the story: messy fingerprints.
So Audi A7 and Bmw 6GT in not in the same class. Will 8 GC be against Audi A7 and CLS ?
What are you trying to say? Try and write in clear and comprehensible way.
Can we not talk about Audi and their inferior car products on this BMW blog, pls? Yeah the A7’s design may be nice and is more like what we expected from the 6GT, but that doesn’t change the fact it is still an Audi and a Volkswagen product.
What a lame excuse. VW owns Audi, Porsche, Bentley, Bugatti , Lamborghini ect… I guess BMW is better than all the brands I just mentioned? have a seat.
Relax bro. No need to ninja in and try to dagger me up with fighting words lol
This is BMWBLOG so I expect talk on Bimmer cars. Merc/AMG cars can also be talked about because they are RWD biased just like Bimmers whereas Audis are FWD. btw Audi is basically souped up VW, the diff between Porsche and Audis is getting blurry, Bentley & Lamborghini ride on Audi platforms with lots of Audi parts/engines tarnishing them in the eyes of some. Personally, none of those VW AG brands and vehicles impress me. I see them all as the same Volkswagen cars wearing different badges. That’s just my take.
This has got a very imposing and arresting design. Probably the best looker among all german sedans.
Amazing interior… Borrowing from the A8. BMW needs to make the 7 look more futuristic. Hope that the 8 does this.
