In the latest issue of Car and Driver, the popular U.S. magazine had the opportunity to test drive the new BMW 1 Series M Coupe. To make the drive even more interesting, they decided to place the 1M against Audi’s TT RS and the Infiniti IPL G37. The chosen place? The famous Tail of the Dragon roadway in Great Smoky Mountains.

The 1M ran 0 to 60 mph in 4.5 seconds and magazine declares the 1M as “the clear winner”. In straight-line though, the Audi TT RS reported an impressive number: 3.6 seconds to get to 60 mph.

After the comprehensive review published in the magazine, Car and Driver returns now with the video review.

@Horatiu Boeriu… Have you decided which color is it gonna be ? ;)

This development of the N54 engine, the inline-6 / 3.0 / twin-turbo from 135i, 335i and others, is quite impressive. They jumped 306 PS and 400 Nm (great numbers) to 340 PS and 500 Nm in Z4 sDrive35is and this 1 M Coupé. And M Competition Package to improve the handling… it’s easy to see why it is the winner.

But I still keep thinking why didn’t they launch an option with DCT (DKG) 7-speed transmission with Launch Control?

The 1 M Coupe is the the master in its class all day!

I thought the G37 is a competitor to the 3-series. Of course it much more competitor to honda civic, than any great PREMIUM class car like BMW 3, Audi A4 or Mercedes C-class.

Great handling from 1M, which is – I believe – enough to meet BMW M-division customers’ demands. It seems that M-division did their job properly once again.

    • Babken

That handling comes to zero, when you take into account the crappy engine and transmission. To me, the TT RS is the ultimate car in this trio to go for. Without questions.

Too bad your beloved TTRS is based on a VW Beetle and the 1M is based on the M3 – I know which one is actually premium.

        • Brian

Too bad the VW beetle based TT RS beat your 1M around a 2 mile track by a full second.

        • Real Driver

Actually the TT chassis is based on the Golf V GTI, which always received great reviews, so it was a good idea to use. And “based on” does not mean “is”, its the other 70% of components that make all the difference.

Time is not everything, so the Renault Mégane RS Trophy (FWD) is better than the TT RS and 1er M Coupé? Audi TT has a serious problem: it’s non-quattro system. You know that A3 and TT have transversal engines, so they don’t have the magical “longitudinal engine + Torsen centre diff” (the real quattro system since 1987, now they’re playing with crown-gear diff, but it’s another story).

Even the TT RS has a Haldex based-on-demand 4WD. It’s a FWD car with 4WD when it needs. It’s not a good handler. I’ve driven a TT-S and a 135i and I still think BMW handles better. Time is another story. All reviews pointed out to forget about the time, the 0-60 mph… 1er M Coupé is the true Sheer Driving Pleasure. Ask me? Which do you prefer: TT RS ou 1er M Coupé? I’d take the TT, but I now the truth, and the truth is BMW is still better.

The 1M Coupe is what an M car should be!

To me, the TT RS is the clear winner. Buyers in this class want to be the fastest and not feel comfort. Audi trumps BMW in acceleration tests and puts the fastest lap easily beating BMW. So it’s a shame on BMW. Bravo, Audi. The M division is beaten this time.

    • FreudeKing

Buyers in this car like good handling – too bad your TTRS handles like a VW Beetle. Don’t you forget the 1M is RWD and not a 4X4.

      • Real Driver

If the TTRS handles like a VW Beetle, why did thrash the BMW around the track? Aren’t track times supposed to be BMW’s strong point?

I’m a bimmer owner and love my BMW’s but not sure how “1M is the clear winner” when the Audi did 0-60 in 3.6 seconds and the 1M did it in 4.5. how does that work ? forget comfort and all those other things , if you’re doing 0-60 numbers fastest guy wins.

  • mofox

    isnt surprise…….BMW M Power!

  • Bmw4life

LOL @ the Audi fan boys. YOUR PRECIOUS AUDI IS JUST A VW WITH SOME VELVET IN IT. No better than that crappy Infiniti.

    • RealDriver

And yet the TTRS thrashed your precious BMW in every aspect that matters. Conclusion: BMW 1M coupe is worse than a VW. Your logic, not mine.
