The X2 was said to be part of BMW’s plans to expand into more niches at a lower cost by sharing platforms and parts with other models. Insiders said at the time that the X2 would be a sister car to the popular X1 SAV and will give BMW an entry-point in the premium compact segment with a very stylish design and attractive price point.
Some have described the potential X2 in a similar way the MINI Paceman is to the MINI Countryman, a lower roofed SAV with a shallow glasshouse and dynamic angled roofline.

A more recent report from CAR Magazine comes to shatter those dreams, at least for now. A source close to the UK publication says that BMW has no plans for the X2. While the technology, platform and engines are in place, squeezing another niche model between the X1 and X3 might not be the best use of resources. We believe that the company will focus more on bringing to market niche front-wheel drive vehicles which will take advantage of the new UKL platform that underpins the next MINI cars as as well as BMW’s first FWD vehicle, the Active Tourer.
