The lease on my Mazdaspeed 6 is just about up, so I've been itching for a new toy for months now. I spent nearly a year researching and planned a day that I could spend driving cars back-to-back.

Okay, so some of the cars I picked don't have much in common. All were pretty terrific in their own ways. The cars were the 370Z, Genesis Coupe 3.8, 128, and 135. I have to say, the 135 was in a whole other class. It drives like nothing I've ever driven. The chassis is well balanced, but not harsh. The torque from the twin-turboed 3.0 is linear and pulls the little Bimmer all the way to 7000 rpm.

The 370Z and Genesis left me with a big smile after really putting them through their paces, but they aren't the kind of cars I could live with every day. Too bone-jarring and call way too much unwanted attention to themselves. Needless to say, I chose the 135 and will be picking it up on Friday! Woo-hoo!

The 128 was a decent ride, but the 135 is a diminutive gangster in an Armani suit - an absolute psycho. If the 135 had a role in a movie, it would be Joe Pesci in Goodfellas. Now go get your shoeshine box and test drive this thing!

I ran into this car by accident. I actually went to the dealer to drive a Z4, which I found pretty uninspiring (I currently drive an RX-8, which is a great little car).

But the 135 is a different story, and I have to agree, it does NOT disappoint. This little car is everything I think a drivers car should be - small, fast and a kick to drive. But it also has that great BMW quality and finish. I'm a big fan of Japanese cars, but most just can't compete with on this level. The 135 has more character, and is much more engaging to drive than even the 3 series. I'm completely hooked.

The only thing I want to know is WHY AREN'T THEY BRINGING THE DIESEL VERION OVER FROM EUROPE??! The diesel version of the 1 series coupe gets 50mpg! There's no excuse to not bring that car to the states.

Either way, the 1 series is going to be my next car. It's a total winner.
