Over the last decade, we’ve gotten quite used to seeing all the latest prototypes in the business being tested on the Nurburgring. We’re seeing them being pushed to the limit almost on a weekly basis, dressed up in psychedelic camo. However, footage of these rare prototypes trying to blend in with other cars in daily traffic situations is rare. Today, we’re in luck though, as we get to see the 2 Series Gran Coupe out testing on German highways.

What’s interesting about this sort of footage is that it gives you an idea as to how big or small a car as you have other models to use as scale. In the case of the 2 Series Gran Coupe, the new car will be slightly smaller than the old F30 3 Series. It will share the same underpinnings as the newly announced 1 Series and will have an overall sedan shape with a coupe roofline, hence the “Gran Coupe” name.

Unlike the 1 Series, the new 2 Series Gran Coupe will be arriving in the US and BMW has high hopes for it. Yet, the competition is going to be fierce. Among the cars the new Gran Coupe will have to face you’ll find the CLA-Class, the A-Class sedan and the A3 Sedan. All of them are great cars and that means the 2er will have its work cut out for itself. Under the sheet metal there’s a FWD platform lurking but you’ll also be able to order the car with all-wheel drive.

We had a go with one prototype earlier this year and walked away impressed. The goal from the get go was to create a car that offered a beautiful design, more space and great driving dynamics. We weren’t able to show its design, but what we can say is that BMW delivered on the other two key elements – driving dynamics and space.

The car will be unveiled in full in November at the Los Angeles Auto Show and will go on sale in 2020.
