A new month and a new leak for the BMW Group (original link here). With just a week to go before its world debut, the stunning BMW 8 Series Gran Coupe shows up on social media. The images leaked give us a detailed side and rear view of the 8er Gran Coupe and reaffirms our initial statement – This is one of the best looking BMWs in the last decade. The design builds upon the new 8 Series Coupe, as one would expect, but it adds the extra touches of a four-door coupe – a sloping roofline and an elegant, elongated rear.
The added space will mean much improved space inside, especially for back seat passengers. The Gran Coupe will be the most expensive member of BMW’s 8 Series lineup and will be the largest model in the range.
Not officially confirmed, but we can already assume that engines are shared across the 8 Series range. That means two Gran Coupe models will be offered: the 840d and M850i. The diesel will be the cheaper of the two and powered by a 3.0-liter six-cylinder engine producing 315 hp and 502 pound-feet (680 Newton-meters) of torque.
The M Performance version will use a 4.4 liter V8 powerplant with 523 horsepower and 553 pound-feet (750 Newton-meters).. Both will have an eight-speed automatic gearbox and four-wheel drive to get the power to the road.
Next year, BMW will also introduce a M8 Gran Coupe, aimed at taking on the Porsche Panamera Turbo and Mercedes-AMG GT 4-door.
For more info on the stunning BMW 8 Series Gran Coupe, stay tuned for the official launch in the next few days.
Just wow. I hope the 2 Series GC can have some of its DNA too
2 Series is front wheel drive so completely different UKL platform.
Absolutely gorgeuos. M8 GC will be perfect!
sorry, not a coupe
Why?
You know damn well why
Coupe, from the French couper, to cut, dates back to horse-drawn carriages & coach-building. Check Google Images, Detroit were doing fastback sedans decades ago, conversely, Cadillac had a 2 dr. coupe called a Sedanette. So, yes, coupe, 4 dr. sedan couper. Coupe.
Not sure what you’re trying to say with that last line…Adding a fastback to a sedan doesn’t make it a coupe
That’s what the other sentences were for. Couper. Used to have 2 door sedans as well.
BMW 2002/1602. All the Nomad wagons were 2 doors, so they could be called hatch backs technically speaking or even coupés.
That’s a shooting brake technically. Not a coupe and not a hatchback
When’s the last time you saw a Nomad on a shooting party? Didn’t its manufacturer call it a wagon? Like this manufacturer calls GC a coupe?
Lol never. They probably called it a station wagon because Americans wouldn’t understand the term shooting brake. In this case with BMW and GC, I would argue that most people generally know the difference between sedan and coupe so the effect is opposite and just causes confusion.
And attention. Chris Bangle got profiled in the NY Times over a butt he didn’t even design. What would you call 8 GC? 4 dr. sedan? Can’t charge a premium on that!
There are no 2 door sedans. Sedanette is just a name
Detroit made 2 door sedans for decades, they had b pillars, coupes were hardtop/no pillar. And coupe is just as much just a name as is Sedanette, it’s all just marketing semantics, so why are some for real& others not? Couper. Sedan is a coach-building term also.
Ok my vague google search made me think Sedanette was a model. But it’s still a coupe not a 2 door sedan. I’m guessing you and people back then may have referred to it as a 2 door sedan because there was probably mostly bulbous 4 door sedans everywhere in America and it looked like a 2 door version? Moving on..pillars don’t specify the body style. Hardtop can be either sedan or coupe it just specifies no pillar. Coupe is a body style. If being used for marketing semantics it should be used validly not incorrectly like BMW is doing on this car.
Dude, I grew up with the marketing – coupe is a hardtop, sedan is b pillar, same as 4 dr. sedan is b pillar, 4 dr. hardtop pillarless. And Sedanette was a model, Detroit made up lotsa marketing names (Corinthian Leather, anyone? Opera windows?). Also, depends on era, pillared coupes predate hardtops. And as I have already explained, BMW’s use of coupe is totally correct in the historic meaning of the word, not about doors. And just as now, we called it a Sedanette because that’s how it was marketed. Pre-internet & anonymous trolls knowing more about vehicles than their manufacturer.
Ford Vedette (4 dr.), Lincoln Cosmopolitan (4 dr.), Olds Club Sedan Fastback (2 dr.), Oldsmobile 68 Sedanette (2 dr.),.Oldsmobile 2 dr. Club Sedan Fastback, Oldsmobile 88 Club Sedan (2 dr.), Packard Deluxe 2 dr. Sedan, Lincoln Town Sedan
Isn’t a lot easier and cleaner if we all just agree that coupes are two-door, closed body cars, sedans are four-door closed body, roadsters are two door sports cars, spyders are convertibles, station wagons and SUVs are what they are. We can agree to disagree of course.
Ok, understood. So what would be a good name for it?
Sports sedan? or Gran Sedan. ;-)
Exactly, no good naming convention :)
Not exactly, it’s a sedan and not a coupe. I have no problem with qualifying the names e.g. sports sedan or personal luxury coupe but there is no confusing the number of doors in these examples.
What do you think what M5 is?
Nope… Its a Gran Coupe.. Its different… because its Gran.
excellent! love it. That’s a Gran answer
This is way hotter than the coupe. I’m so in love.
Why does it look so much better in Gran Coupe form? The front end which is identical to the coupe even looks better. I think the photography has alot to do with it but this is a very handsome package. From the side it doesn’t have as sloping roofline compared to the A7 but it must help with headroom.
It looks amazing in person! Trust me! I have a video with the car coming up next week! The car is hot, wide! Can’t even imagine the M8 GC
Thought the same thing when I saw M850i in the metal. BMW are sculpting their cars these days, photos can’t do them justice.
Hmmm… the M8 concept looked so much better to me. It was the hood design, the kidney grille and the headlights that I fell in love with. The final 8 Series design is not a bad looking car, but it’s not nearly as beautiful as both concepts, the 8 coupe and M8 GC.
Looks like all the other ones.
All the other 600+ hp ones? Ach, nein!
Article.is about looks
Since 3rd century Greeks knew beauty is in the eye of the beholder (aka SUBJECTIVE), why can’t 21st century typists figure it out?
Since the beginning of time beauty has been in the eye of the beholder.
Yet another reason ur op is bs.
U wr thr, wr u?
Next time try for the beginning of thinking.
Not typing.
I think it might be available in 6 cylinders 840i as well. We saw the coupé 840i being tested. But we’ll wait and see. It looks beautiful.
I don’t know, it just doesn’t look very… special. A far cry from e.g. AM Rapide. And Kia Stinger comes to mind (which is not a great thing).
I’m sure it looks better in person though!
Price is a far cry from Rapide or Spur, Stinger is A7 knock-off. Neither colour or photos work well here, but M8 GC will be 600+ hp. beast, it won’t resemble anything else on the road, let alone lesser BMWs.
Stunning? It looks like every other BMW out there.
Pass.
Wait till you see the car in person
From his comment, I do not think there are any BMW in his town, or at least his neighborhood.
Thanks to desperate lease deals, BMWs are everywhere. Especially old 7 series which are the favored drug dealer ride in NorCal.
These lease deals aren’t desperate, its a really great offer. It’s not BMW’s fault people have always been flocking to the dealers for their next car, leasing or buying.
To me it look like a sedan to me. All you gotta do is look up in the tree. Who all seen the sedan say yeahhh!!”
Need not to skip your remedial English classes.
A more expensive kia stinger.
Nice.
No, Stinger is a cheap A7.
NOT nice!
Love the squashed KIA’s trademark grille
Whole car looks squashed to me. Squashed A7.
It’s long and wide! You’ll see
Was referring to Stinger, totally agree on 8er. 1 reason the Mustang comparisons are ridiculous.
ROFL
Looks like a BMW
Must be the M850ix Gran Coupé with the CF roof.
Aren’t coupes two doors? What’s with four-door being called a coupe?
Coupe strictly speaking means cut or chopped. Usually is associated with a 2 door automobile, but not always.
Coupe – a car with a fixed roof, two doors, and a sloping rear.
Well…usually but always – from the French for chopped. 2 doors is the norm but not actually part of the true definition. So BMW is not exactly wrong for using “Coupe” on this or the 4 door 4 series or the out-going 6 series.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Coup%C3%A9
Still telling me 2 door sporty car with a sloped roof. Saying a LARGE 8 series is a coupe because it has a sloped roof and looks sporty is like saying a truck is a coupe because it has two doors. They use coupe as a marketing scheme not because it is a coupe. This whole what’s a coupe thing started with the RX-8 because it’s a coupe, but it does technically have 4 doors, however, the two rear doors are suicide doors to help passengers easily get to the rear seats, not full doors. Therefore, that is still a coupe even though it has 4 doors.
Did you read the Wikipedia link? I’m not here to defend it, just showing the origin and that current usage includes some 4 door cars. Personally, I’m with you and wish they used some other term, but again it’s strictly not wrong.
I did. And it says some 4 door cars have been called coupes, and it names the RX-8 as one of those cars. Which I think is fair since the RX-8 only has 2 full doors.
They don’t call it a Coupé, the call it a Gran Coupé ;)
Some other term like what? Your op was perfect.
Well done moro&s.You fuc#ed up the hofmeister kink. Its nowhere near as good looking as the 6 series.
So buy a 6 Series, BMW have been doing different kinks for half a century & other manufacturers before Hofmeister.
6 is dated next to this.
Dare I say that section of window you mention regarding the kink, looks a bit kia optima shaped? But just that cross section of the vehicle…
Yes it does. But It also reminds me of the maserati ghibli.
If this debuts this month, good chance M8 GC arrives before end of the year then.
No, will be 2020. There is always a 1 yr gap between series and M model market introduction.
It’s fine. Next . . .
Well the Supra is a BMW
And also not a sedan.
Exactly.
Impressive! Hottest looking BMW to date!
I already went to my local bmw and gave them a $50,000. down payment. Can’t wait to have mine delivered. I was the 5th. Customer to put a down payment on the heater 8.
Where did you get the money from. Does the tax man know?
Leaked! Wink!
There is no wink
This thing is hawt! I haven’t liked a modern BMW since the Bangle days. Finally. Finally. Let’s hope this isn’t an anomoly. Funny the coupe does nothing for me, but the longer roof really works here.
Will look amazing in the metal… like BMWs tend to do.
Just visited the Toronto annual Father’s Day Yorkville Exotic Car Show on Bloor St., realized I’m guilty of the same 💩 I criticize people here for, internet photos do not do justice to new metal. Contrary to what I typed previously, new Astons are stunning & seeing crazy, over the top Lambo SUV Tonka Toy made me realize that’s kinda the point (& that’s without hearing it, can’t even imagine). Guess a lot of these 6 figure beasts are just not meant for us typists (well, some of us), most seem more comfortable with what they know & what they grew up with.
So true…
This time the coupe looks better.
I have lost so much respect for BMW and came to the conclusion that they can design ok cars. The M5 which gets beaten by every other car manufacturers who build high performance sedans in terms of power. The MINI which should of showcased german engineering by updating the mini but still being small like the Toyota iq maybe. The X5 cant go off road. The I8 is so slow. If i see a person either in a x5 or an i8 i think the person driving that car knows absolutely nothing about cars. BMW cars used to mean something. BMW own Rolls Royce and the new Rolls has a BMW engine. Why would anyone want to buy a Rolls with a BMW engine ?
Maybe you sir, is they guy not knowing anything about cars. Maybe sometimes, listen to other opinions other than your own. I mean, maybe, if everyone is wrong, except you…
> The M5 which gets beaten by every other car manufacturers who build high performance sedans in terms of power
What are you smoking?
> Why would anyone want to buy a Rolls with a BMW engine ?
A lot of people I’m sure, since BMW make some of the best engines in the world.
The person who knows ABSOLUTELY NOTHING about BMW is you. “So slow” i8 made it on Motor Trend’s list of Top 10 Quickest years ago, 0-60≤4 secs. Rolls-Royce & Bentley began using BMW engines in the ’90’s, as did McLaren, which now auction for million$. How long did iq last? Smart? Not.
M5 is the best and most beautiful in is class so what are you smoking mr ? Plus Bmw is doing the best motor of all companies.. Bmw rule the world and leading the car buisness and every one else is following
Looks like a Lexus
With a bag over your head. LS, LC are very handsome, but their corporate cowcatcher train plow grilles ensure they can never be anything but Lexi.
True enough, I agree with you. So, sans that front section though, from a little bit of distance, any resemblance to the lexi or am I just still with that bag over my head?
“That cow catching train plow grill” – lol
I enjoyed that, thank you. I’ll be thinking of beef on a grill everytime I see a Lexus now haha
Kobe.
