A new leak pops up – and still unconfirmed – this time around showing the upcoming G29 BMW Z4. Judging by the image posted by Instagram account liucunyi, this indeed seems to point to the final design of the Z4. The background of the photo might also indicate a closed-room showing since BMW has started to introduce the cars to VIPs from around the world.
The unveil of the G29 Z4 is not scheduled until August 23rd on the Pebble Beach golf lawn, but as we’ve seen recently, leaked images are bound to happen.
At market launch, the US market will offer two models, the four-cylinder 2.0 liter-powered sDrive30i and the M Performance Automobile model – M40i.
Both models will go on sale in Spring 2019 as a 2020 Model Year. Sales of the four-cylinder 30i will start in March 2019 and will be priced in the low $50,000 range, while the G29 Z4 M40i will arrive in April and it’s expected to sale for a base price in the mid-to-high $60,000.
The two-seat roadster will use the well-known ZF 8-speed automatic transmission. While a manual gearbox is out of the picture, the electronically controlled limited-slip differential is standard which will make the drive more dynamic and intriguing.
German brother of Italian Fiat 124. Understandably, lot less flair and an acute lack of newness, in general. Definitely Bavarian !
Just because you cannot afford one!
Totally irrelevant revert, but still here is my answer..
Even if I can, i would not want to be seen with this car. :)
Could you douches pls. meet on a different dating site? And stop lowering the colllective I.Q. here.
Step aside everyone !! Rotten Potato is here !!
You are both freaks.
Until your comments have anything to do with BMW related content, you are both on the wrong page.
Hi BMW blog, i would like to understand why is my comment to this fellow was deleted. I assume that it probably had something to do with my language but this guy doesn’t use make any decent comments either.
I tried to delete all that incite. Nothing personal. I know it wasn’t you that started. But we like to keep the conversation civilized and valuable.
i see your point. :)
Unable to make any rational arguments, you default to name-calling, since you cannot be blocked I flagged you for targeted harrasement. Again your comment is personal & unrelated to the content of this blog.
Kia and Fiat made a baby and called it z4. The headlight needs to be slimmer like the concept. Why cant BMW make something special and different………
124 is a Miata, pretty sure this is special & different – who else is doing a 335 turbo I6 roadster? Oh, right – NO ONE!!!
Totally clueless on this !
looks like its been cropped, looking forward to official photos

Wrong hood line. Again!
Agreed. The cut line on the Z4 was always a bit of an eye sore. At least the four corners are gone.
Yes, since the Cobra, people have driven roadsters for the cut line. Wtf is a cut line? Circumcision?
Try seeing a different doctor. It may help.
Ok guys, easy. Dont’ wanna start deleting comments
Why? It hasn’t you.
It has what looks like a German emission sticker on the windshield but no front plate. Guessing this is the 30i. I’m not feeling it but this photo is taken from a horrible angle with a relatively wide lens.
Perhaps
Not bad… Let’s hope it doesn’t have conjoined kidneys like some of the other new models. And is it really necessary to have such a busy, complex aerodynamic lower fascia??
Horaitiu, they found more photos of the side and back of the car. https://uploads.disquscdn.com/images/3df407ff68342a81262c636f213523605177be3e1a063211627fb5183f5b8dcc.jpg https://uploads.disquscdn.com/images/4057c39d96d59c77770bd10571e852df411da55c8635fbb780f233a889b7d755.jpg
There still badly cropped, but its more than we’ve ever seen before.
The side profile is pretty arresting !!
The back looks promising. The side is okay but wide angle distortion may be playing tricks. It’s unfortunate that the front looks so soft given that this is an M40i. The headlights and shiny black plastic bits makes it look down market.
The back looks really good, sort of like a baby 8 series. I’m not a fan of the new face, it doesn’t have the nice dual lens headlight styling that all BMWs of recent gens do which is odd.
I don’t understand why BMW won’t build cars like their amazing concepts? Why do they introduce concepts they have no intention of, or cannot build? So frustrating. So disappointing! What a missed opportunity.
Come on. This is just a tuned down version of the Concept! BMW is one of few brands that actually does this.
Motoring & Driving both headline it looks like Concept & we haven’t even seen production yet.
BW Business world just posted an article comparing these leaked photos with the Concept, call the new photos stunning & positively conclude they resemble the original. Beauty is still in the eye of the beholder.
Once again, the concept Z4 looked better than the production car.
Hmmm, not bad. But not as good looking as the 2nd-gen Z4. I’m waiting for official photos.
It’s not the concept, but i like what i’ve seen so far.
I miss the corona rings what makes Bmw so typical. The concept was ok but this? This car looks like it was designed by an alien.
Creases on the hood (of concept) have been entirely removed. The hood on this leaked photo of production spec looks bland. Other parts look okay but the hood looks undeniably bland. That, and other than the fact the concept is much lower and looks much wider than this leaked production spec.
Get back to us when you’ve seen the actual production vehicle.
The viewing angle is bad. Much too close, so it looks not as good as it could. I’ll wait for the official release in less than two weeks.
Hans Better.
???
Lame English pun.
The headlights of Z4 looks like Luk Calvin’s glasses. Bmw needs definetly a new and better designer.
i actually found this comment funny lmao
I’ve misspelled his name. I think his name is Calvin Luk.😎
I actually know Calvin fairly well, aside from a great chap, he’s extremely smart, young and passionate about design. Keep in mind he did the second X1, new X3, facelifted 1 Series and now Z4. I’m not sure what the design decision was, but what I can tell you is that the car actually looks better than in those photos. I’ve seen the embargoed photos. Will also speak to him in Pebble Beach in 2 weeks for the unveil so I can ask some questions, if you guys want me to.
What I can say is the X1 was his best work till now and I love the X1 really from every ancle. It’s a really, really good looking SAV better than X3, X4 and X5 SUV’s etc but that’s not enough. Every Bmw should be an eye catcher. I had high hopes first when I saw the concept, it looked agressive and good. I can’t say that to the new Z4 and I am a little bit disapointing at this point, because Bmw deserves more.
Hi Horatiu, !! Can you pl. ask him a question that where exactly are BMW designs headed in general? Most current crop is neither interesting to look at nor expensive looking? And to be honest, barring few good ones, most cars are extremely uninspiring to look at. To top that, now most BMWs are actually looking derived from much lesser cars. I was thinking that its just probably me who thinks this particular looks uncomfortably similar to fiat 124 spider but almost entire car advice Aus post thinks the same to.
Its very sad to see that such svelte and arresting looking car is being replaced by this humdrum. I understand that these pis aren’t from best of angles but i doubt even if they are from the best angles, this car would be any good looking than last.
Also, why is BMW so hell bent with atrocious design details in cars these days. Hockey stick elements, rear bumper of 8 series, half plastic inserts around dials, and now those extremely cheap and garish looking black inserts on front bumpers of this car. Its neither looking nicely gelled nor does it appear to be any bit interesting. Simply sticking out like a sore thumb.
I am pretty sure that they may try to convince with their choices but if the design facelift in upcoming 7 series is anything to go by, then we can safely assume that they themselves admit that their designs aren’t working.
PS – give my regards to Calvin ! He simply nailed X1 and to a large extent X3. i, personally, think that he knows how to inject BMW-ness in a design better than most more accomplished and experienced designers.
Please ask him why the new 8 series (and all G series cars) can have the hood line correctly placed and this new Z4 can’t. If they can design cars that comply with pedestrian regulations and have the hood line correctly placed (something that has been demonstrated with all the G series that have ‘fixed’ the wrong hood line placement of the F series), why do they come with this new Z4 with a line that completely breaks the front view of the car? Seems like lazy design. They should have gone back to the drawing board and fix it! Thank you Horatiu
Can you please ask why there is so much design gap between the concept and the production model. Especially in front design?
Cheers!
The back, sides and overall lines of the look great but the nose looks like a Fiat 124. If this is supposed to compete with Porsche, it’s gotta be better than this
Why is a front engine turbo I6 competing with a mid-engine 4?

Agree with BMW, 6 rivals 4. Aren’t Porsche going back to 6?
The teaser picture from July 31st shows the grille with shiny highlights. Missing them here. Is that only available for lower trims?
At least it carries many of the front and rear design cues from the 8 series. Both are not my cup of tea. I don’t like the grill pattern, reminds me of my backyard fence. I like the X1 he designed but the direction he’s taking the SUV grills is also not my preference. He’s better than Bangle at least
Gorgeous!!!! 😍😍😍😍
Something seemed strangely familiar when looking at the leaked photos of the production Z4. Check out the headlights and rear spoiler of the 2009 Saturn Sky. And compare the air deflectors behind the seats on the concept Z4 with those on the Sky and Pontiac Solstice.
Credit to General Motors for being a decade ahead of BMW with the design of their PRODUCTION models.
You mean the same company who morphed their traditional twin oval grilles into kidney knock-offs? Yes, so original. And the design feature you cite has existed on race & concept show cars since post-War, for decades, check Google Images.
