Just the other day we showed you a drag race between a BMW M2 and an Audi RS3 and the discussions and debates it started were definitely not anticipated by us. Some points were made that the RS3, being available only in hatch or sedan guise, isn’t a real rival for the M2 and that the Audi TT would be more of a match since it is also described as a ‘Coupe’.
Well, today we found a video of the same manual BMW M2 drag racing on the same strip, this time against an Audi TT S. However, unlike last time, this race wouldn’t be considered fair either because we’re not dealing with an RS model here but with a lesser, S version of the stylish Audi model.
What that means is that under its hood hides only a 2-liter 4-cylinder turbocharged mill making 310 PS and 380 Nm (280 lb-ft) of torque. Those figures coupled with the all-wheel drive system sending power to all four corners of the car means that you can reach 62 mph from standstill in 4.6 seconds aboard a TT S Coupe.
On the other hand, the BMW M2 comes equipped with a 3-liter straight six mill making 370 PS and 465 Nm (343 lb-ft) of torque as standard, the torque going up to 500 Nm (369 lb-ft) for short periods of time with overboost. This being a manual, RWD coupe it will reach 62 mph from standstill in 4.5 seconds, which is pretty close to the Audi as well.
It’s worth mentioning that this is not a standing start race, instead the cars setting off from a roll. That nullifies the advantage brought on by the AWD system of the Audi and therefore, moves all the focus on horsepower. This is also why the BMW seems to be going for a walk in the park and not break a sweat. All we need to see now is a drag race with a 400 HP Audi TT RS, the proper rival from Ingolstadt for the BMW M2.
Competitor? Wannabe.
From a roll an M2 can handle a RS3 sportback. The TTRS with more power and less weight will just destroy an M2.
Homely, MQB, no I6. Enjoy your VW.
The I5 in the TTRS is a great engine and has a unique character that puts it far above a run of the mill Inline 6. The generic I6 in the M2 is not selling point for the car when comparing it to a TTRS.
BMW have been producing I6 since the ’30’s, there is nothing generic nor run of the mill about them (the competition have cost-cut to V6’s & 4’s). I would never compare the M2 to the hunchback TT, nor any VAG to a BMW. I am too old for toys, I want premium.
The M2 has a generic BMW engine. End of story. You can go on all you want about whatever, but at the end of the day the M2 has the engine of a near basal 5 series. The engine of the M2 is not a selling point. Take it or leave it.
Edit: Also you did compare it to a TTRS. I now know talking to you is pointless.
Google it. COUNTLESS reviews disagree. 300+ turbo hp. Is generic?! Enjoy your Volkswagen. If u can.
I do not have to google it to know that the M2 uses the engine out of a run of the mill 5 series. This is my last response. It is clear that you are not even paying attention to what is being said (by you or me) or that you do not understand what you are talking about.
Endless online accolades for the M2. Aren’t the 1M & M2 still appreciating in value? You are only typing bias, you have no credibility, of course I ignore you. Enjoy your VAG.
Speaking of VAG – ironic that you defend a volume corporate platform while decrying a limited production premium sports car as being generic or run of the mill. BMW have always been an alternative to a mundane status quo, glad to see nothing has changed. Enjoy your Skoda.
Also this M2 is the same colour as mine, mineral grey FTW.
