With the launch of the facelift for the BMW X5 (E70), it is also time to compare the revised design and engine line-up to its classic competitors from Ingolstadt and Stuttgart. While design can be quite subjective and usually based on personal preference, the technical details are the one that remain set in stone and help us differentiate between similar models.
So let’s begin first with the vehicle curb weight, the one element that influences the dynamic and sportiness of the car. Starting in the 300 horsepower range, the heaviest contender comes from Audi, the Q7 stops the scale at 5,206 lbs (2,280 kg). Second in weight comes the BMW xDrive35i with its 4,728 lbs (2,145 kg). The Mercedes-Benz ML350 is a tad lighter than the X5 35d, at 4,706 lbs (2,135 kg). Read the rest of this entry »
Today, BMW took the cover off their latest iteration of the popular X5 Sports Activity Vehicle. The changes in the model year 2011 are quite significant, both in terms of exterior design, but most important, underneath the hood.
The front-end goes through an extensive facelift, the lower front bumper/fascia appears to have been lifted and given a little redesign from the X6, giving it an appearance that makes the front end look lower and more aggressive. It also allows for wider air openings to feed the larger and more powerful engines more air.
To go along with what BMW has been doing lately for the 3-Series LCI, 335is, and F10 5-Series, the X5 features corona rings, or halos as most like to call them, that are full LEDs. The rear taillights get a new L-shaped LED design as well.
Ever since BMW first released the BMW X5 SAV, or Sports Activity Vehicle, to the American public in 1999, people have loved it. It was built in Spartanburg, South Carolina, so that made it an American made German vehicle. If you needed a light utility vehicle that had safety, comfort and agility, the X5 was the one for you.
It was for the soccer mom who wanted to break all the stereotypes and drive a premium SAV, or for executives and young professionals,or the guy who didn’t want or need a Chevy Blazer, Trailblazer or Tahoe. But now, for the second generation, BMW has decided to upgrade it once more with a pair of new engines, new transmission, along with new colors inside and out, and of course, some great new accessories and options.
So if you don’t feel like reading through 2,400 words of a BMW press release, take a look at just the facts below.
The new 2010 BMW X5
This spring, BMW will write the latest chapter in the story of the world’s first Sports Activity Vehicle®, the BMW X5. Originally launched for the 2000 model year in late 1999, the BMW X5 permanently changed the automotive landscape. It proved that the driving dynamics, responsiveness, and linear control signature to every BMW could be compatible with utility, versatility, and other-roads capability. For 2011, the BMW X5 models are enhanced with new powertrains and updated design. The new BMW X5 will make its North American debut at the New York International Auto Show in April, and will go on sale at authorized BMW Centers shortly thereafter.
Innovative new design elements and powertrains are the result of over 4,000 new parts created by BMW designers and engineers for the 2011 BMW X5. Two of the X5’s powertrains will be all-new for 2011, creating the new X5 xDrive50i and X5 xDrive35i, in addition to the familiar BMW Advanced Diesel X5 xDrive35d. All models receive a design update that enhances the brilliant focus and aesthetic appearance of the X5 brand. Read the rest of this entry »
G-POWER TYPHOON „BLACK PEARL” based on the BMW X5 (E70) 625 hp and over 300 km/h V/max
The G-POWER TYPHOON “Black Pearl” arrived! At the end of the jubilee year “25 years G-POWER”, G-POWER introduces an exclusive special model of the G-POWER X5 TYPHOON to the market. Driven by the 625 hp / 460 kW strong G-POWER SK III RS Eight Cylinder Compressor Engine, the Black Beauty darts over the motor-way with more than 300 km/h.
Brawny wing extensions and strikingly formed front- and rear skirts qualified for maximum aerodynamic efficiency, mark the appearance of the G-POWER TYPHOON “BLACK PEARL”. And as the name already applies, it is entirely black. An exciting eye-catcher is the G-POWER “BLACK PEARL” bonnet which ensures an improved removal of the hot exit air from both turbo chargers out of the engine compartment by a central Venturi engine compartment ventilation for driving and 2 lateral ABS-grids for the standard ventilation. Moreover, the noble carbon structure is the figurehead of the G-POWER TYPHOON “BLACK PEARL”.
The BMW X5 has been named by CAP as the luxury used car of the decade. The residual value and whole life costs experts praised the X5 for setting a new benchmark and taking the 4×4 from the field and putting it on the motorway, but most of all making it feel like it has always belonged there. It was the effortless usability, faultless build quality and strong influence on the marketplace that wooed the judges.
Mike Hind, CAP Communications Manager, said: “For the used car buyer who does need a workhorse, with towing power and room for the whole family’s holiday load, the 2000 – 2006 BMW X5 provides it. But it also offers the opportunity to leave the green wellingtons and the horse box at home and enjoy driving as a pleasure in itself.”
Jonathan Spira over at The Diesel Driver continues its quest in the diesel world and this week, he gives us a full review on the 2010 BMW X5 xDrive35d. Those of you that remember, the same model served as transportation method for us on our trip to Spartanburg and after thousands of miles, we were more impressed with it than any other SAV we’ve driven before.
Does TDD share a similar experience? Let’s find out.
“We took the X5 xDrive35d on a variety of trips, from local errands to long drives along scenic and windy parkways. The view from the driver’s seat was impressive. We found it true to BMW’s Freude am Fahren (the Joy of Driving) slogan whether on city streets or the open road. This was one large vehicle but it was eminently floggable nonetheless.
