We all know the BMW M2 CS is coming and it’s going to be the fastest, most hardcore M2 iteration yet. As with all ‘CS’ Bimmers, the upcoming M2 version will be lightened, focused and made more powerful, all in the name of making it the most precise, track-ready version of the M2 yet. According to BMW M CEO Markus Flasch, it’s all worked out quite well.

At an event in South Africa, Flasch recently said the BMW M2 CS is “the most crisp and pure BMW M model that we have launched in quite some time,”. While that might seem like a bold statement at first, it’s actually not that hard to imagine. Most recent M cars have either been SUVs or big luxury vehicles. So it’s been a long time since BMW M made a proper, driver-focused weapon. The last car like that was probably the M4 CS. But this new M2 is supposed to be even better.

According to recent reports, the BMW M2 CS will make 444 hp and 406 lb-ft of torque from its 3.0 liter twin-turbocharged I6. If that number looks familiar to you, it’s because those are the exact power figures of the M4 Competition Package. Which makes sense because the M2 CS uses the same engine as the M4. So, essentially, BMW is just using the same engine tune as the M4 Comp Pack in a much smaller car.

It’s also going to be lighter, tighter and sharper. It will also likely have some interesting new aero that should help it stick to the track better, along with some ultra-sticky Michelin Cup 2 tires. Considering the M2 Competition is already an impressive performance package, we can only imagine that the BMW M2 CS will be even better. And if it’s as good as Markus Flasch is saying, it will be the best driving M car in a long time.
