Now that the new Mercedes-AMG GLE 53 Coupe is here, it’s time to take a look at how its styling compares to its Bavarian competitor, the BMW X6 M50i. Because we can’t drive either just yet, we can only truly compare their style. Which actually works out quite well because their styling is really the only thing that sets them apart from their more traditional siblings. You only buy an X6 over an X5 because of its “style”. So let’s see how these two-ton-plus fashion statements compare.

Up front, I think it’s fair to say that the Mercedes-AMG is the more handsome car. It’s not exactly pretty, as it’s a bit bulbous looking, but it’s better looking than the X6 which is, sadly to say, a bit of a mess. There’s just so much going on in the face of teh X6 that it almost hurts my eyes. I get migraines quite often and they can be triggered by certain things. Trying to make sense of the X6’s mug is one of those things.

Trying to decide which car looks better from the side, or front either three-quarters angle, it’s really a matter of taste. The BMW X6 is the more muscular car, with broader hips and sharper lines. So it’s the sportier of the two. While the Mercedes-AMG GLE 53 Coupe is smoother, more elegant and more understated. Though, neither is pretty. So if you like sportier cars, you’ll prefer the X6. If you like smoother cars, you’ll like the Merc. So it’s a wash.

Out back, I have to give it to the Mercedes-AMG GLE 53 again. Its taillights are a bit odd but they work better than the X6’s, which look far too thin for its body. Also, the AMG sports cool quad exhausts. The BMW X6 has quad exhausts as well, but each pair of pipes is sort of hidden away in little rectangular bits of trim. But, just overall, the AMG seems to have the better butt of the two.

Another matter of taste is of which interior is best. Both cars have fantastic build quality, great tech and rich materials. Where they differ is design and ergonomics. The Mercedes-AMG GLE 53 Coupe has the more attractive looking interior. Its four rectangular air vents in the front, it’s clever dual-screen integration and sporty steering wheel all make it the flashier cabin. However, the X6 has a bit better ergonomics and is quite a bit more subdued. So if you prefer calm, ergonomically sound interiors, then the X6 is your car. If you want more flash, to remind you you’re in something special, then the AMG is your car.

Overall, I think the Mercedes-AMG GLE 53 Coupe is the better looking car of the two. Honestly, customer should buy neither and, instead, should choose between either the BMW X5 and Mercedes-AMG GLE-Class, as those are both great looking SUVs. But if you need to be an automotive fashionista and buck typical trends for something more stylish, I think the AMG is the better look.
