We’ve seen Evolve Automotive’s Stage 2 F10-generation BMW M5 before. It’s a 710 hp monster nicknamed the “Great White” because, well, it’s powerful and it’s white. But it’s still a very heavy luxury sedan that sends 710 hp to only its rear wheels. So it might not be as fast as its power would suggest. Or is it?

In this new video, Evolve shows off what its ‘Great White’ F10 BMW M5 can do by putting it up against a McLaren 675LT at VMAX. To do so, they drag race the two cars side-by-side and the results are surprising.

First, let’s take a look at the McLaren. Right from the factory, the 675LT is mind-bendingly fast. It packs 666 hp from its 3.8 liter twin-turbocharged V8 and is lighter than the F10 M5. A lot lighter. So it’s capable of 0-60 mph in just 2.9 seconds, making it a rocket off the line. So can the much heavier but more powerful tuned BMW M5 take it?

Yes, actually. Surprisingly, Evolve’s M5 was able to jump the McLaren off the line. We thought it would just turn its rear tires to smoke but instead it just hooked up and took off. It then took a lead it never relinquished. The McLaren started to catch up toward the end of the race and actually seems like it brought the gap between the two to just a few inches. But the highly tuned BMW M5 eventually pulled away even further and won the race quite handily.

That’s quite an impressive accomplishment for the folks at Evolve. They’ve tuned an older M5, a car known for traction issues, to a point where it can take on and beat genuine supercars. Now imagine what an F90 BMW M5 could do to the McLaren 675LT, with its all-wheel drive traction off the line?
