Here comes the first video of the new and already highly controversial 2012 BMW 1 Series Hatchback. Revealed yesterday, the BMW premium compact vehicle has been not been well received by the BMW community. While the interior design is a step up from previous generation, the exterior design cues are less impressive.
Styling wise, the F20 1 Series follows the design language initiated by BMW back in 2009 when the new 7 Series came to market. The car features a bold front that aims to stand out with what we believe are a pair of oversized headlights surrounding a flat and smaller than expected kidney grille. The hood sports the creases seen on all the new BMWs and facelift models.
In the back, the taillights are a bit too busy for our taste with an integrated LED L-shape. The car continues to feature a similar hatch-look as the previous generation with a lower positioned trunk and a a more emphasized trunk-lid.
The video, from magazine Quattroruote from Italy, showcases the new 1 Series Sport Line against the previous generation E87 1er.
I think it looks more aggressive. The back lights are similar with VW Polo.
Yes, they have “square” in common. Â
Honestly……. these are dull tail lights. There’s one element (the “L”) that follows the convention, but everything else — and overall — it plays no part in the car’s design.

gotta say yesterday when i looked for the first time i tough it was horrible, now that i see it again i think it just not a good looking car, so i need to wait and see if the desing grows on me or not
Like I said in the other threads, this video is comparing the current 1er in M-Sport Package with the new 1er with its Sport edition but no M-Sport package, hardly fair, the current 1er is actually pretty good when draped in M-Sport bumpers….
There was a few spy shots some weeks ago about a new 1er in M-Sport being pulled over by the Police in Germany, the front splitter on that looked awesome, and would change the front look completely.
Need to compare similar trims before judging this one.
i dont wanna see it anymore…
Looks great. I liked the old one too, but this is even better. Not crazy about the interior, but it’ll grow on me b/c their engineers are right & we are wrong. When are we going to learn? We just have to wait & find out how right they are.
This is ridiculous… I’d go over to BMWs, and slap the designer.
The new 1 series looks faaaaaaaaar better in the video than in the pictures. Having in mind that the M-package and facelift model will make it look even better, and having in mind the incredible interior, this car looks a bit better than at first look. And I am sure it will look even more appealing LIVE…

I thought the new 1 series looked downright hideous in the photos when I first saw them, but it looks much better in the video, especially with the headlights on. I’m still disappointed that they used the same rear end as the current 1 series… maybe they’re cutting costs by not designing a new tail? Not sure really, but I agree that it looks much better here than in the photos.
fugly
The new 1 looks just like a 3, a Mazda 3.

the back lightes similaer in polo
It looks MUCH better in the video than in the photos (though in fairness, as unpopular as this may be I actually didn’t think it looked bad in the photos). Â It definitely makes the previous model look old.

The front is horrible. the rest seems like a mild facelifted version of the outgoing model.
mmmmmmmm gotta say i like it more the a did yesterday, but it still somewhat weird and ugly
Wait a little more and you might like it one day. This car needs its time, I guess most people will change their attitude when they see it in real.Â
Off topic: What I also like are most comments here, there’s not that much flaming, most of the writers write what they think and evaluate with some arguments! Hope it stays this way
Opinions every person has one!   The car looks different than all the other ones in this segment as a hatchback it looks better than most of them and it is on the spot recognized as a BMW .  Now days a  VW looks like a Renault or any other Japanese brand . Its aimed for young people who experience the BMW magic later going into more expensive models , this formula has worked for years and will keep on making it the no. 1 Car brand in the World, amazing how many other brands want to be BMW !!.
