Finally, a more detailed review of the GT, that isn't stuck on its unconventional styling and departure from what a BMW "should look like." Thanks for telling us about your experience and allowing that not every car fits every single person's tastes. If carmakers catered to the wants of every single person, cars would be too expensive to produce. We are taking delivery of our GT 535 next week and to say I am excited is an understatement. A BMW saved my spouses' life in an accident, and for this reason I consider these cars to be an important investment.

The rear window is smaller than a wagon or SUV(sans the X6) but visibility is good for the most part. The C-pillars are pretty thick, but, with the long side windows and decent rear window your rearward visilbity isn't diminished too much. I believe BMW is going to make a blind-spot system available for the 5 GT so that should help.

Hrmm... I went to the reception at my dealership last week, and yes it does look nice indeed. Rearward visibility worries me though, especially the rear 1/4 section, when you're looking over your shoulder and can't really see anything. Didn't drive it yet though, so maybe it's nothing to worry about.

Just a heads up, some time today 11/16 BMWUSA.com is supposed to have a video expose of famous designer Catherine Malandrino and her 5GT experiences. Link is on page 2 of the home page flash. Should be interesting to watch.

You can expect the turbocharged inline-6 in the mid-Spring of 2010. However, it will be the N55 engine which is a single turbo engine producing the same HP as the existing N54 twin turbo but the power starts lower in the rev band. It should be a very interesting package!

Thanks ... most thorough review to date on thr new 5 Series GT. We have a 2001 530i in Titanium Silver which we love. We've been waiting for this new design iteration and it is almost here. I amxious to persue your darker color idea as I've been assuming/dreaming that when the time comes, we'd choose Titanium Silver again. I'm also anxious to learn when we might be seeing the new 535i.

I didn't like Active Steering in the original form that was on the E60. With the new system in conjunction with the active suspension it feels much better. Is it the end-all-be-all in steering? No, but the two systems, combined, compliment each other. It feels about on par with Audi's speed sensitive steering.

The iPod worked very well. I plugged in a first generation iPod Touch to the connector inside of the center arm rest and it was immediately recognized, playlists, artist and song names, everything. I used the iDrive knob to select artist collections or playlists but from there I could cycle through the songs quickly with the scrolling pad on the right side of the steering wheel and select songs. As I mentioned, when you scroll through a playlist, the songs feed up or down through the display just to the bottom right of the tachometer so it makes it very easy to select music without having to look away from the road other than a quick glance down. I believe the radio and sat. radio work in a similar fashion though I didn't play with the radio much outside of the iPod functionality. Also, the sound quality was excellent and used the 6FL( I think that's the right name for it?) cable that both charges the iPod and allows you to play music.

Hope that helps!

First had an '02 540i6 then an '06 750li. So I think this will be just right. I have sat in one that was at the local dealer and all my fears went away. I didn't get to drive it yet and the reviews seem so so. With traffic today, having an M is ridiculous, but when those few moments arise I am glad to hear that she can be a beast.
I was surprised to hear you liked the Active Steering, that has been usually a negative in most reviews over the years. It always made good sense to me, never got to try it though since my dealer never orders it.
You also mentioned the ipod in the dash. Haven't heard any of that before, any more details?

Thanks
