The latest news report the BMW X1 will be manufactured at the Leipzig plant in Germany. The plant is capable of assembling around 700 vehicles/day and it will focus on delivering cars for the European market. To us, this comes as a surprise, since we were under the impression that the Spartanburg plant in South Carolina will focus exclusively on BMW's X models.
The idea behind this change probably lays in BMW's marketing plans to advertise the BMW X1 primarily for the European market. As we have mentioned before, the BMW X1 will fit in a slot between the popular X3, the BMW 3 Series touring and the all new BMW 1 Series. The X1 will feature the X-drive system similar to the one found in the X3 and most likely will be powered by the engines found in the 3 and 1 series. We already know that the X1 will be built on the 1 Series platform.
Of course, no pricing available at this time and the launch date is still set for 2009 as MY2010 model.
