One of the stars at the 2019 Frankfurt Auto Show is without any doubt the new BMW Concept 4. Although it’s only a concept, BMW says the Concept 4 Series is 85 percent representative of what the production-ready 4 Series will look like.
So what does that mean? Firstly, the future BMW i4 electric car will have a similar design, including the controversial and extroverted kidney grille.
Secondly, the new G82 BMW M4 and also the G80 M3 will inherit the front-fascia from the BMW Concept 4 Series.
Thirdly, this is not a one-off design exercise, so we should all expect bold BMW models to come out in the next few years. With the included oversized kidney grille.
BMW says that the Concept 4 takes inspiration from the classic 328 and 3.0 CSL models, which it references in its sweeping exterior lines. Currently, the LED lights have no glass cover but are worked into the body instead.
But don’t expect to see that on the production model.
The good news is the rear-three quarter view is sharp looking, and it includes a new interpretation of the iconic Hofmeister Kink.
The car is expected to debut next summer and sales should commence in late 2020 or early the following year.

Not Bad! What does it mean for the new M3? When will we see that?
After the M4 finishes production next year, as the F83 EOP has moved up a month from 10/20 to 9/20. Expect the G80 next October 2020.
Exactly!
I can see the similarities between this 4 series concept and the i4 concept i vision dynamics. The overall shape looks good, and it looks like the grill will make it into production. The grill is growing on me as it makes the car tough, sporty and aggressive.
these huge beaver teeth can’t be aerodynamically friendly … these huge ugly teeth will have the side effect of inducing more drag ….
No Hoftmeister Kink…. just an Audi kink
About the front….it will all depend on two things:
1. Where the hood line will be in the production car: where it should or in the middle of nowhere. That simple detail makes a lot of difference.
2. Vertical / horizontal / mesh slats.
Would expect the M440 to have mesh slats, where as a M trademark is a double slat vertical front grill.. Will be interesting how the M front bumper which is shaped like a “A” incorporates the huge front grill. The 4 concept has the series production M sport bumper which is shaped like a “M” (regarding the angle of the front airflow- inwards vs outwards).
Lovely car, but no where for front numberplate?
It would be nice if they were no longer needed, but the government are incapable of passing any legislation!!
Honestly I think this looks really sharp and I like it a lot. I prefer the renders of the G80 M3 for the front over this design (just some small differences) but I think it fits the car well. My only complaint is that the rear 3/4 looks exactly like an Infiniti Q60. Like almost zero difference. Am I the only one that sees that?
Exactly my thoughts regarding the rear. The side profile is too much like a Lexus and even the front. The design seems to be borrowing alot from the Asian manufacturers.
I’m sure it’s designed with that market in mind.
Sickeningly ugly. BMW has completely lost their way.
Lookin from the side, the front end looks like Jaguar, Hoffman kink is definitely Audi kink, BMW is going the in wrong direction. Looks decent minus huge grills, but it looks too much like other cars, doesn’t have BMW body language imo.
If you’re going to complain about it, at least get Hofmeister right.
Dont cry grammar nazi. It was the voice text. If you’re going to participate on this topic, at least apply something towards the car instead of looking for spelling mistakes.
No need to make excuses because you didn’t know what this styling feature is called, or indeed who it is named after – just remember, it wasn’t the guy from Rain Man.
As for applying something towards the car, people here don’t care about other people’s opinions unless it validates their own. I’ve said what I feel about it, and I don’t need to keep repeating the same comments in multiple threads to try and get attention for my opinion.
Dont be upset kiddo. I can feel you getting excited and “hard” to get into argument. I know about BMWs plenty , keep looking at them, maybe one day you will own one. You would be a guy to watch melodramatic movies, you own that in bluray version?😄. The bottom line is that Hofmeister kink is gone. Rear end looks like A5. I have been in BMWs since I was born and grew up around them and work for BMW. Youre not telling me anything new. Youre just a guy that likes to be right all the time. Youre an idiot 😄😄. Conversation over. I do t argue with kids. Good day 🍻
I guess Chris Bangle is back
I like the overall design. The front / grill is a bit too much but since it’s a concept I assume it will be tuned down a bit before going into production.
wtf am i looking at? seriously bmw, why are you doing this to yourself????
Looks like a big shape of an apple on the front of the car. We’ll look back at this period as fondly as we do for the bangle era
Also, looks like a Mustang https://uploads.disquscdn.com/images/69a830a659af89295545f74b576b84112bddcb338348374bd772d72fb6172898.jpg
At least the Mustang is a car with a grille. But the 4 series is a grille with a car as a bonus.
The grill looks like a butt print left on the sand at a beach 🤢 barf!🤮
This is sad. The current 4 series design is still very mad looking, especially the m4. But they had to ruin it, since the first gen was too good looking for the company. Typical BMW philosophy for the last 5 years. Ever since the G generation came out, they haven^t been able to impress their design. E.g. failed to integrate the grille on some important models. In addition, rivals have moved further and made their design more attractive, while BMW has moved backwards. For instance with the new 1 series, x6, 7 series and now with the 4 series concept. Call me old fashioned, but I miss the old styles when BMW was at the very top. And please there is still a marked outside China. If they want cars with abnormal design, BMW can just increase the China only models. Thus still develop ultimate driving machines for the rest of the world.

I mean look at this f32 concept. Looks a hundred time better

As I read the many, many comments, the overall consensus is becoming clear: those nostrils along with that s**t-eating grin are just plain wrong.
It’s not just a few subjective dislikes as is expected with all designs but a massive failure on a catastrophic level.
The most flattering observations are remarking about the silhouette (which I agree) and the rear. That’s it. Good game, BMW.
All I can say for the i4 is, thank Porsche for making the Taycan.
So you are now comparing a completely overpriced and hyped 150k Taycan, which can barely reach 400km WLTP with the i4 for approx 50k and 500km+.
Sounds very smart…not! :D
The specs for the i4 are far from final, as is the pricing. But I’ll put my wager on the base i4 priced at around $70K and with full range being around $85K. The i3s is priced at $60K so you can bet that the i4 will be more that that.
The lower performance Taycan is speculated to be about $100K when released.
If these numbers are accurate, game over i4.
Numbers are wrong ;)
Looks like a Honda coupe to me
