BMW maintained its lead over rival Mercedes-Benz in the U.S. luxury auto market in May, as the Munich-based automaker reported BMW brand vehicles sales increasing by 1.7 percent in May 2019 for a total of 27,109 over the 26,662 vehicles sold in May 2018.

BMW sold 4,300 units of the new BMW 3 Series sedan in May 2019. BMW X3 Sports Activity Vehicle continues to be the best-selling BMW model in the U.S. with nearly 6,200 units sold in May 2019. BMW Sports Activity Vehicles in total – including X1 through X7 – account for 56% of BMW sales YTD.

Mercedes-Benz reported a 0.4 percent gain to 27,080. BMW is now leading Mercedes by 3,613 units for 2019. May was the first month the latter brand boosted sales this year as demand picked up for the GLA, GLE and GLC crossovers.

Toyota’s Lexus brand finished third in the race with sales falling 3.4 percent to 24,537 units while Audi came in fourth with sales slipping 2.2 percent to 18,892 vehicles.
