The recently introduced BMW X4 M40i gets a new opponent – The Porsche Macan GTS. The new Macan made its debut yesterday at the 2015 Tokyo Motor Show and will go on sale next Spring. The enhancements start under the hood where the Macan GTS packs a 3.0-liter twin-turbo V6 good for 360 horsepower and 369 pound-feet of torque. That’s 20 more horses than the Macan S but 40 less than the Turbo. The power is sent to all four wheels through a seven-speed dual-clutch transmission. The result is a 0-60 time quoted at 5.0 seconds (or 4.8 with the optional Sport Chrono pack) and a top speed of 159 miles per hour.

Compared to the Macan S, the GTS features a retuned air suspension, recalibrated electronics, ride height lowered by 10 millimeters, and 20-inch wheels with a matte black finish. Inside the cabin the sporty theme continues with sport seats with Alcantara and lots of brushed aluminum. A new exhaust ensure the Macan GTS delivers that expected growl, while the upgraded brakes will help stop the car even on a track.

A newly developed M performance TwinPower Turbo inline six-cylinder petrol engine celebrates its world premiere in the new BMW X4 M40i and also in the new M2. This petrol engine delivers 360 hp at between 5,800 and 6,000 rpm from its 3.0 liter capacity, providing a maximum torque of 465 Nm (combined fuel consumption: 8.6 l/100 km; combined CO2 emissions: 199 g/km). The BMW X4 M40i accelerates in less than five seconds to 62 mph and can reach a top speed of 155 mph.

BMW says that the specially tuned sports chassis of the new BMW X4 M40i provides driving dynamics at an advanced level. Stronger springs and stabilizers, increased camber on the front axle, the adaptive dampers specifically tuned to M Performance specifications and the BMW xDrive four wheel drive system with its rear wheel-drive characteristics including Performance Control, ensure a neutral self-steering response as well as a reduced roll tendency.

In the interior too, the typical character of the BMW M is present. The M leather steering wheel, the M gear shift lever, the sport seats and model-specific door sills remind us this is a special X4, just like the “X4 M40i” digital lettering on the instrument cluster.

The new X4 M40i will debut next month at the LA Auto Show.
