Next year, BMW will unveil the third generation X5. The F15 X5 will be followed a year later by the M version of the popular SUV. A BMW X5 M prototype was spotted at Nurburgring during a high-speed test trial.

Since the upcoming X5 was built atop an extended platform of the current F10 5 Series, the SUV and its M counterpart are expected to shed some pounds when compared to the existing models.

Under the hood, the 2015 BMW X5 M is likely to feature the same engine as the F10 M5 and new M6. The S63Tu unit used the current X5 M’s engine as a starting point and the 4.4-liter unit has an output of 560 hp (412 kW) at 5,750 – 7,000 rpm, and maximum torque of 500 lb-ft (680 Nm) on tap between 1,500 and 5,750 rpm. The rev limiter intervenes at 7,200 rpm.

The engine is mated to a 7-Speed M-Double Clutch Transmission and an innovative Active M Differential.
