...one more comment, all the current engines from the M50 onward all seem to fit the coding.
ex. -M5 V10: S85
      -M62, N62, N63, S65, S62, all V8's
      -M50, M52, M54, N52, N54, N51 all inline 6
      -M73, N73 V12s
so close enough, at least currently.
maybe the coding was something that was defined more strictly as time went on. maybe after the M50. since then all the inline 6s have been M/N 5 something.

good call Matksi. i realised after you wrote that that i missed that point. the F1 engines are designated by P.
as for the V6 thing....this was discussed for a long time during the editing of this article. the source of these codes are from my BMW technical training manual. the book they give me when i go to school (BMW NA technical training). according to the manual they state the 2 is for a V6. yes the M20 was an inline. i dont know. if theres a typo, its BMWs typo. ill see if i can get an answer on this next time i go to training in feb. well just say theyre was a typo for now. we decided to let it run since it was printed in BMW issued documentation.

VERY.... interesting stuff. This is what I want. Get crackin', Al.

"I don’t want to overload you with too much information at once"

Seriously, I'm really looking forward to more of your in-depth technology jibba-jabba, even if it is too much for me to handle.

@<a href="#comment-78322" rel="nofollow">bmidd</a>:
S is the first portion of the engine code in any car with a factory ///M badge on the back. Doesn't <i>exactly</i> mean it's an entirely different engine than what's available in a standard vehicle, though. If your car didn't come with an ///M badge, your engine code starts with an M.

No, ebay ///M badges do not count.

2 – V6 is this a typo? BMW V6?

S14 is 4 cylinder and doesnt fit in this naming convention. I dont think BMW has a fixed naming convention for engines (except for the letter), although it seems that they tried to start a new digit whenever there is a new config.
As mentioned above P is used for F1 engines in the new era (Williams and Sauber) and they are all in the 8x number regardles of the cylinders. The 4 Turbo in the 80s was using M (starting with M10).
