Now that the new G06-generation BMW X6 has been unveiled, it’s waiting time for the BMW X6 M, the go-fast version. It’s the one BMW enthusiasts want to see. Despite most BMW enthusiasts preferring smaller, lighter sports cars, the BMW X6 M has always been quite delightful due to the sheer absurdity of it. Like a war elephant, it’s more athletic than it looks like it should be. In these new spy photos and video, we get to see the X6 M doing some testing.

It obviously looks more aggressive than the standard car. Even the standard G06-gen X6 looks pretty muscular and aggressive but the X6 M takes it to a new level. With massive air intakes, a lower ride height, larger wheels and quad exhaust pipes, the BMW X6 M shows that it means business.

And it does. Under its hood is a 4.4 liter twin-turbocharged V8, the very same one that powers the new M5 and M8, and it makes over 600 hp. That, combined with its eight-speed auto and xDrive all-wheel drive system, will motivate the X6 M to 60 mph in under four seconds. There will also be a BMW X6 M Competition model with around 625 hp that should get close to three seconds on the nose.

It also sounds good. We’ve obviously heard this engine and exhaust in other cars before and it sounds great. But to hear it in an SUV, especially one that looks as funky as the X6, is special. There’s a tongue-in-cheek absurdity to it, a sense of humor, that makes the BMW X6 M a special car. It’s ridiculous and superfluous but that’s sort of the point, isn’t it?

Personally, I’d probably still rather have an X5 M thanks to its more practical body that also looks better, but I can understand the attraction to the humor of the X6 M.
