This isn’t a fun post to write. Veteran car journalist — of Car and Driver, Jalopnik, Road & Track and other publications — Davey G. Johnson is missing. The last he was heard from was Wednesday, June 5, at 2AM. Johnson was on his way home in Sacramento from the Mammoth area, riding a black Honda CB1000R, which he was road testing. The plate number for the bike is 3421.

Police found the bike at a rest area on Route 49 a little after midnight this morning and the search is still ongoing. Unfortunately, there’s been another discovery today that isn’t very encouraging. Johnson’s clothing, phone and computer were found near a river, without his wallet.

Personally, I didn’t know Davey Johnson. I met him briefly a few weeks ago on an Audi e-tron press trip, which was ironically out in Sacramento. I shared a quick elevator ride with him for a bit and he seemed like a good guy. Kind and funny. He’s very well respected and loved by many in the industry and there are a lot of people deeply concerned about his whereabouts.

So if anyone knows anything, has seen him in the past couple of days or has any sort of information that could even potentially lead to his finding, please alert the Calaveras County Sheriff’s Office. If there are any readers in the Sacramento area, please keep your eyes and ears open and alert the police if you learn of anything.

We’ll keep this post updated as soon as we get any new info and we’re hoping for Johnson’s quick and safe return home.
