Not long ago we were showing you an ALPINA B7 Biturbo going up against a rather unusual rival on the drag strip, the complicatedly named Mercedes-AMG GT63 S 4-door Coupe. Back then we were telling you that the proper rival for this car would be the BMW M8 Gran Coupe Competition, but until that model arrives, the M5 Competition should be a good alternative.

It seems like the guys from DSC Off agree and they already put together a thorough comparison of the two cars. They somehow got their hands on a brand new GT63 S and I do mean brand new. The car was so new that it didn’t even allow them to activate Launch Control and thus, a roadtrip of 1,500 kilometers was needed in order to get over that hiccup. Once every single pony of its 4-liter twin-turbo V8 was unleashed, things got crazy real fast.

The guys wanted to measure the two cars before doing an old-school drag race with them and thus they went to a dyno. Needless to say, the numbers they got were considerably different than what the manufacturers claim. The Mercedes-AMG is claimed to have 639 PS and 900 Nm of torque but their readings show a power output closer to 700 HP and almost 1,000 Nm of torque. It is not mentioned whether those figures are at the crank or the wheels.

The M5 Competition is even more powerful, with over 700 PS read and some 830 Nm of torque. The scale also showed that the M5 tips the scale at about 2 tons while the Mercedes is heavier at 2,170 kilos. Therefore, considering both have all-wheel drive, you can imagine what the outcome of the drag race will be, right? Well, it’s closer than you may think. The drag race action starts around the 28-minute mark.
