BMWBLOG has just learned that the BMW X2 was greenlighted for production scheduled sometime in 2017. The long-time rumored X2 Sports Activity Vehicle has been on BMW’s drawing board for years and has gone from a confirmed status to a canceled project many times in the past.

BMW X2 will be built on the upcoming second-generation X1 which uses the front-wheel drive architecture launched by BMW in the 2 Series Active Tourer and new MINI models.

While the F48 X1 will lose some inches in size, the X2, while more sporty looking, it will also offer more interior space. The X2 will remind us of the design of the upcoming X4, so expect a lower roof line and a side profile that makes it attractive to a younger demographic. While not confirmed, we also learned that the X2 will be a five-door coupe SAV.

The X2 will not only share the underpinnings with the F48 X1, but also the same power plants. Under the hood we will see three and four-cylinder engines, in both petrol and diesel, with capacity ranging from 1.5 to 2.0 liters.

The 2017 BMW X2 crossover will run against the Audi Q3 and Mercedes-Benz GLA.
