Next year, BMW will unveil the third generation M6. The new M6 will be available in both Coupe and Convertible variants and will have its own attributes and characteristics in order to challenge the established rivals from Porsche, Audi, Bentley, Aston Martin, Jaguar and Mercedes-Benz.

As seen in this spy video, the M6 continues to carry the typical wider rear fenders and the usual four-tailpipe exhaust system characteristic to M models. At the front end, a more aggressive and typical M-style bumper with integrated diffuser is included as well. The test mule showcases big brakes behind the large wheels and M-signature quad-exhaust pipes out back.

For the M6 Convertible, a cloth top will return in an effort to both keep the droptop’s weight to a minimum and to give it a more distinct, classic appearance.

The 2013 BMW M6 will likely be powered by an upgraded version of the 4.4 liter V8 engine, producing near 600 horsepower. A similar engine but will less output – 560 hp – appears in the new M5 as well. The power is exclusively directed to the rear wheels and should make for an impressive acceleration. A regular sprint to 60mph is not expected to take more than 4 seconds.

Looks heavy… probably about 2t… shame, it would be lighter – like 1600-1700kg

Yeah… it’s heavy and that sound is just a letdown for me. The M6 will be just a GT car with a lot of horsepower.

How could you expect M6  to weight 1700kg, when 650i weights about 1845kg? This one will be something between 1800-1900kg.

@123: Assessing sound of upcoming M6 on the basis of sound of test mule is peculiar. Check the difference between sound of M5 test mule and the sound of finished product. What does it mean “will be just a GT car with a lot of horsepower”? Wasn’t it supposed to be a GT car? Do you doubt in an improvement that M division will achieve for this car? Well, M-cars have never been fast because of plenty of hp, they’re rather whole packages.

@25e1cab8ff2712fcc718efd7ebeaecf1:disqus -Well, M-cars have never been fast because of plenty of hp, they’re rather whole packages.-
        true but:
today ///M stands for MAKE MORE MONEY!
M6 will be just tuned 650i just like M5 is tuned 550i etc.
True M was E60 M5, unique engine, unique gearbox unique iDrive for M options……ah good old times.

The M5 and M6 are not in the essence a “tuned 550i and 650i’s respectively”  When you get behind the wheel of an M car if you are familiar with the standard car then you notice the changes in how it drives , how it handles . sound and feel as well as performance.

That is the M philosophy. It is about making enthusiasts cars that stand out something M excells at at every given opportunity.  Each M has a great advantage over the competition. And that is they are based on a great dynamic chassis that has been proved in the core models. That is something the competition do not have. And their problems filter through because of this.  The M5 is unique and has a unique engine. It may be based on another engine but the engineers can progress the engine to suit the car.

A BMWM over the standard BMW is progress. An Audi RS for example is a more power and shiny new badge and nothing else as the standard car’s problems remain.

BMW M might “Make Money” but at least they still address enthusiasts and still bring out the excitement in each segment and make sure that these are the cars M customers want.
