BMW i8, “the most progressive sportscar” as the Munich-based automaker labeled it, made its public debut today at the 2011 Frankfurt Auto Show.

According to BMW, the i8 will set a benchmark in the performance segment. The 349 horsepower hybrid has nearly 80 mpg fuel consumption. BMW says the i8 runs a 0-62mph in just 4.6 sec – 0.3 sec faster than the M3 Coupe. I

Initially previewed by the Vision EfficientDynamics (Vision ED) concept back in 2009, the super-sporty two-door i8 has already undergone two years of intensive development. The major change is a new 1.5 liter petrol engine replacing the initial diesel unit of same capacity. The engine is mounted at the rear and drives via a dual-clutch gearbox.

BMW i8 measures 4632mm in length, 1955mm in width and 1280mm in height, comparable to the 3 Series coupe in dimensions.

Both the BMW i3 and the BMW i8 will be built at BMW’s Leipzig plant in Germany. Some 400 million euros are earmarked for investment in new buildings and facilities by 2013, while 800 new jobs are to be created.

I have a question, why do you state on every article that the i8 is 0.3 seconds faster than the M3? e92 M3 coupe does 0-100km/h in 4.8(manual) and 4.6(dkg).  You could say it’s 0.2 secs faster than the manual M3 but not 0.3 and it’s equally as fast as the dkg.

paint it all black put on normal wheels remove backseats put M5′s engine boost it to 600+ maybe even call it M1 n kick some supercars’s asses !

That would remove the whole point of this car.  This is about moving into the future, not staying stuck in the past!

I don’t like these “star trek wannabe”-cars. Really they are ugly as hell. But i’ve no right to decide the cars BMW is building. :D
    Too bad! :D

I repect your opinion, but its comments like these that have kept the other great automaker design concepts just that, concepts.  They always tone production way down.  That is part of why these cars will look so radically different still, BMW actually goes through with what they reveal to the public as concept for their production models.  The truth is, we SHOULD have had cars that look like this at least 10 years ago….This is design evolution at work, and I for one welcome it.  This is 2011 after all not 1998.  Everything else around us is starting to look futuristic, touchscreen thin Cell phones and tablets, soon computer monitors and TVs will be as well, and paper thin and possibly flexible .  Its about time our cars catch up and look the part as well.

this will be a test bed for the m1. bmw will gain so experience with a mid engined carbon fibre chassis. they already have the engines. when the m1 is lunched i think it will be priced at the enzo level. it will be the halo car  of halo cars, and i also think it will be the beginning of the m brand building cars in its own right to take on Ferrari pricing them from 120 000 to 500 00 pounds, there is so much potential in the m brand and bmw knows this. Bmw already have plans in the sub compact segment so the only way is up. m could share a front engined  chassis with a sporty rolls royce

I feel like the i3 is so avant garde for a city commuter type vehicle.
The i8 really pushes the envelope, which I believe halo cars should do.
