BMW presents the concept of a new 4-door coupe. The BMW Concept Gran Coupé underscores the outstanding design expertise of the German premium automobile manufacturer.

With an exclusive Design Night on the evening of the first press day at Auto China in Beijing (April 23rd to May 2nd 2010), BMW provides an in-depth insight into its design philosophy and development strategy. The program of the BMW Design Night is modular in structure and presents extensive background information on the premium automobile manufacturer’s innovative design culture. In addition to highlighting the long versions of the BMW 5 Series developed specially for the Chinese market, the main focus is on an elegant 4-door vehicle with striking dynamic proportions: the BMW Concept Gran Coupé.

The concept study on display symbolises the outstanding design expertise of BMW. The BMW Concept Gran Coupé concentrates the fundamental values of the brand. Its body design authentically captures a sense of superior dynamic performance and high-quality elegance. The shaping style, which follows a coherent pattern down to the last detail, convincingly visualises BMW’s philosophy as an automobile manufacturer. As with the Concept CS 2007, BMW once again sets new benchmarks in the design of 4-door coupes with a distinctive sporty character.

The BMW Gran Coupe Concept

Based on a powerful tradition in this segment, the BMW Concept Gran Coupé carries the essence of brand values and the genes of BMW design into the future. The concept shows the classic features of all BMW coupes: the long wheelbase, the vaulted bonnet with forward-pointing lines, the set-back greenhouse, the flat silhouette, the coupe-style roof line and the short front overhang reflect the dynamic potential of the vehicle. The surface structures and the fact that the design quality is geared towards perfection illustrate the aspiration of the brand BMW to build 4-door high-performance coupes with the sportiest proportions and the most elegant design.

In the BMW Concept Gran Coupé, BMW presents the vision of a 4-door vehicle which combines the exclusivity of a Gran Turismo with the fascination of a high-performance sports car. The design of the concept study underscores the expertise of the brand BMW in the development of vehicles with a distinctive sporty character which offer space for more than two occupants. This reflects the particular quality of the BMW Group design philosophy, which consists in precisely and authentically translating the specific values of product substance into an aesthetically convincing shaping style. The design process is set through with a passion for aesthetic appeal and dynamic performance, precision and perfection. This is how the uncompromising premium aspiration of a BMW Group product, the unmistakable style of the brand BMW and the precisely defined character of each model are given concrete form.

The BMW Gran Coupe Concept

The body design of the BMW Concept Gran Coupé expresses sporty flair in its ultimate form. The 4-door vehicle clearly signals the very highest level of dynamic performance with its extremely elegant, flat and coupe-like proportions. Stretching the entire length of the vehicle and therefore measuring almost 5 meters, flowing lines dominate the design, giving rise to outstanding aerodynamic levels, just as the low center of gravity reflects an agile driving response.

The front section is defined by the BMW kidney grille characteristic of the brand – an icon of body design which is not just central but also a dominating element of front design. The kidney grille of the BMW Concept Gran Coupé has a flat appearance, with an asymmetrical side view which emphasizes the close attention to detail. The central section with the kidney grille is formally separated from other BMW icons such as the headlights and air inlets. The clarity of the LED front lights highlights the vehicle’s precision and premium aspirations. The air inlet runs back an extremely long way into the side section, making the front section appear particularly wide. All elements of the front section appear to merge to form a single, elegantly curved movement.

The BMW Gran Coupe Concept

The sporty, flat silhouette provides an impressive body height of just under 1.40 meters. This makes the BMW Concept Gran Coupé up to 100 millimeters flatter than the BMW 5 Series or the BMW 7 Series Sedan. The roof line tapers off gently into the rear, thereby elongating the vehicle’s proportions. The forward-tilted shark nose visually extends the bonnet and creates characteristic BMW proportions with its forward-pointing dynamism. This stretched character is also highlighted by the side lines, where there is a deliberate avoidance of the typical sill line. The flat proportions make the window graphics appear extremely narrow and dynamic at the same time. Another BMW design icon, the Hofmeister kink, is especially strikingly formed – additionally emphasizing the exclusive character of the vehicle. The frameless doors give the BMW Concept Gran Coupé a modern character since the glass surfaces appear to merge seamlessly without being interrupted by columns.

At the rear, only design elements such as the lights and tailpipe trim appear to be visible at first sight. The entire rear section appears slimmer and lighter at the center, though still exuding power and dynamic performance since the volume is reinforced towards the sides. The L-shaped light banks feature a slight, almost subtle curve and the entire design of the lines and surfaces highlights the vehicle’s elegant overall appearance. The third brake light, positioned in the rear window, is also fitted with LED technology. It takes up the kink in the roof and illuminates the entire width of the rear window. The powerfully flared wheel arches above the rear axle highlight the particularly sporty character of the BMW Concept Gran Coupé.

The BMW Gran Coupe Concept

Another highly sporty and also elegant feature is the rim concept in which the individual spokes extend deep into the center of the rim towards the hub, giving the rim a striking three-dimensional quality. The spokes themselves are not solid but relief-milled, giving them a visual lightness.

The sculptural shaping style characteristic of the entire body design of the BMW Concept Gran Coupé permits a unique interaction between concave and convex surfaces. It also enables the light to be selectively reflected and channeled.

Thus the exterior mirrors integrated in the window shaft appear very light, blending harmoniously into the side view since their shape assimilates the entire line styling. The BMW Concept Gran Coupé is a further development of the classic design of a notchback sedan in which the individual body sections merge harmoniously into a flat, elongated and at the same time dynamic overall image. The effect of this 4-door vehicle derives not just from specific highlights but from its overall appearance, which authentically reflects its character. The car’s dynamic potential is embodied in its proportions and lines, signaling power but also elegance and forward thrust.

This is damn stunning!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! BMW MUST bring this into production!!! Please! Give it a reasonable price and everyone can kiss Audi and Merc goodbye. Why can they not bring these types of designs out with the other models?

      • merc bmw fan

they wont be able to kiss goodbye cause of f800
Both brands just ripping designs off of each other

  • Tim Vincent

Only problem with this car.. its gonna be WAY out of my price range. Absolutely Stunning car.. How is this concept from the same people who think the 5 Series Gran Turismo was a good idea?

  • Brookside

OMG- safe as vanilla. No doubt it’s beautiful- but where’s the creativity and daring in this design?

    • Alex

Exactly my thoughts. Same sausage different lengths concept in action again.

    • Doug

      Indeed. Quite good.

  • KOUKI507

Beautiful, elegant, and looks like a BMW. I say yes.

  • Stjepan Šandor

This should be the new 8 series or the 6 GT. Although the 8-prefix could sound much more exclusive. Price? Between 6 and 7.

The rear end could shame an Victoria’s Secret model.

    • King

Is this what love feel like to you humans? I am in what u call LOVE.

  • plaxico

this just goes to show you that bmw is DECADE AND MORE behind merc in every way ……How funny is that )))))))
we are putting out 2nd cls generation out and bmw is still making renderings, concepts and some silly tests!!!!

    • King

And when it arrives my young Dweeb it will be pure automotive perfection.

its not a COUPE because it has 4 doors. Its a SEDAN and a good looking one. Why do we need to absorb the fugly 5GT when there are cars that could look like this ?
Call this a 5GT and dump that current Aztekish 5GT .

but please do not call it a Coupe – a coupe has 2 doors and not 4. its simple as that.

    • XC

Cold news since MB released its CLS… we’re well beyond that.

  • Laszlo

a note to BMW – look up the dictionary or wikipedia for the word : coupe.

you might learn a thing or two and rename your new Sedan.

    • XC

      • XC

        Boring comment, my fellow fans…

    • wazon8

It only reveals that you use old dictionary or its editors paid not attention to changes in automative world and haven’t recognized that MB created wholly new segment of cars that can’t be called sedans, despite having four doors, and share roofline and rear end similar to traditional those of coupes.

  • AutoCritical

As a concept car, I find this difficult to see.

As a production car, I see some elements of current products that have been intensified, and cleverly integrated into this design.

We will see this car in production soon i guess.

    • FreudeKing

BMW tends to put all their concepts straight into production! Look at the 5GT, X1, M3 Coupe, M5, X6, 5 Hybrid. So let’s hope an pray!

  • XC

I liked the name Grand Coupé since since the very beginnig. I only hoped they built something accordingly. And they have. Absolutely beautiful.

    • XC

And it looks soooo production ready… almost like the M3 coupé of years back.

  • Pingback: Wwe’ve had the opportunity to revisit the CS and update it….”

  • Tom

    pure sex.
thats really all i can say.

  • Bryce

Absolutely amazing! I hope the 6 series looks close to this!!

  • DP

    new 6 series anyone?

  • Malberto

Oh Great! Another beautiful concept car that BMW wont make. Does Concept CS ring a bell? The M1 Homage Concept, or hows about Vision Efficient Dynamics? I really hope that this car makes it to production. I love BMW but I hate to be let down when they present amazing concepts but don’t produce it. They need a car that stands out and wows the crowd. Audi has the R8, Mercedes has the SLS, But BMW Doesn’t have a really compelling car. I know that the Focus of BMW is on Efficient Dynamics, but why don’t they produce an Eff. Dyn. sports car (Ehem, Vision Efficient Dynamics) that looks great, any embodies they’re philosophy.

    • FreudeKing

Exactly, instead we have ugly ducklings like the X1

  • Dennis

    Holy shit!… Fucking EPIC.

  • Jigsaw

Wow wow wow, thiz will be a production car…South Africa iz waiting…Im gon’ have sex with it.

  • JL

This is what the 5 Series Gran Turismo should have been a proper rival to the Mercedes CLS not some frumpy hatchback.

  • n8n

Trully beautiful, but the biggest problem is: THIS IS NOT COUPE!!!!! It’s just sedan looking very sportlike.

  • Player

Excellent!!! This is going to be “bull’s eye” for BMW and “pain in the ass” for the compettition. Well done BMW!!!

  • saha tea

    Good idea”, maknyusssss…BMW’ I love it+

  • alex

this is a preview of the new 6-series…

  • Lariv

That looks amazing and would be a fantastic CLS competitor, hopefully this concept would make it to production.

  • Dallas

That looks awesome, one of the best Looking BMW’s in a while.

  • 100$ GUY

    Oki doki

  • etuoyo

As I have said elsewhere I am surprised this is loved by everyone and I am wondering if there something wrong with me cause this seems quite meh. Looks so so much like the 5 series to me. Now that is not necessarily a bad thing. I hated the 5 series from the photos and videos but where I saw it in person we fall so passionately in love with each other. But a 5 series (520d) can be had for £29k. A 6 series costs over £60k as far as I am aware. Something seems wrong here. To me this should be a 5 series 4 door coupe with the same engine ranges as the 5 series which can be had for about 3k over the original (so the 520d Coupe would be like £33k and the 550 coupe like £60k). It should not cost over twice the price of the cheapest 5 series when they look so similar.

the missing piece of a perfectly engineered machines

    It´s Nice… Do it…. But i really want the M1 concepet car of 2007 :)

Honestly, this is the best design AND most to my liking they’ve done since ….. maybe since ever.

It’s a real change from their polarizing designs of the past (imho) because the design elements are more in keeping with other designs people have come to like. It took me 3 years to like the E90; surely many others had to consider the design for awhile to appreciate it, like a sort of funky cheese.

It’s emphasizing design more and art less.

  • Doug

In addition to the angel eyes evolution, they’ve incorporated headlight lense highlighting like audi. Except, they’re using the refraction to illuminate a bevel around the glass— this was first employed in the tail lights of the Vision.

In fact, the tail lights also have the shape and appearance of the Vision’s…but rather than float in air, they float inside the lenses though, cut into the inside surfaces (probably a thick chunk of polycarbonate).

The grille work is also very interesting; they’re not just flat slats, they’re sculpted and tapered.

This is really a fascinating design.

  • viper

    damn good looking car.
TOO BAD!&Pitty , bmw still showing us concepts instead of presenting us the final product. bmw fans I fell sorry for you , Im not gonna get too excited about this because this is a concept as always

I agree. Adrian will take BMW to the next level. Chris set the foundation, or more than that, but Adrian will bring new ideas to the design

This is really a 4 door 6series. When looking at spy photos you can see the front lights are pretty much identical, and the rears proportions are also much the same. Great news because i love the design. I was told the front grill of the upcoming 6 will be Z4ish and the rear will have CS features. This concept ticks all the box’s. Guys your looking at the new beautiful 6! Enjoy

I went to my dealer today and left a deposit for the first one in 2012. The GT range is just getting better and better. The 5GT is the must have for 2010 and 2011 and then the must have for the VIPs will be the 6 GT. well done BMW for bringing in the GT range so to have a difference from the normal BMWs.

  • Doug

But… this post is about the gran coupe…

And anyone who buys a BMW for the sake of status or “being a VIP” has self esteem issues.
