The upcoming BMW M3 G80 has just been leaked! Or at least, partially. The rear-end of the new BMW M3 G80 popped up on Instagram from what seems to be a BMW preparation center. Judging by the first images, this is likely a pre-production car since the dual-twin pipes in the back are smaller in size than normal, and the diffuser is painted in the same color as the body. This might also be a Competition model since it comes with a more aggressive rear spoiler.
The BMW M3 G80 is still a few months away from its unveil – early 2020 – so it’s not unusual that BMW has a series of pre-production models floating around. The new M3 won’t land in customers’ hands until next summer, but it’s also likely that it will be previewed as part of some exclusive VIP events.
This is not the first leak we’ve seen though. A few months ago, a white BMW M3 G80 also showed up on the Internet showcasing its rear-end – again – as well as part of the cabin.
When the G80 BMW M3 debuts, it will be powered by the same new S58 engine as the BMW X3 M and X4 M. So it will be a 3.0 liter twin-turbocharged I6 engine with 473 hp as-standard. There will also be a competition model available at launch and that will pack the same engine but with 503 hp. For those keeping score, that 503 hp is exactly the same amount as the Mercedes-AMG C63 S. Still, it’s a bit few ponies less than the Alfa Romeo Giulia Quadrifoglio’s 505 hp.
This new G80 BMW M3 will also be the first M3 in history to power all four wheels. According to our sources, there will be two models; a rear-wheel drive model and an all-wheel drive model; marking another first for the famed performance model. The rear-drive M3 will be available with either a manual gearbox or an eight-speed automatic, while the all-wheel drive car will be automatic only.
As for the M3 Competition, it will only be all-wheel drive and automatic.
It would seem as though BMW is moving the M3 up a notch or two. The ‘look and feel’ of the car in that one quick image is enough to tell us there is something special coming.
The new benchmark/bullseye.
I just hope is something made up by a photoshopper. Because if that’s real, we are going back to the 1st nfs movie with cars having non sense body kits just for the sake of looking more aggressive. This bumper is looking bad and on top of that its function is missing almost entirely. It is clearly visible that all that plastic is hiding the exhaust resonance chamber, because… oh God, packaging gone mad.
It’s pre-production, so not all final pieces are on it
Thank you for confirming.
Is it the camera angle or does the photo give the visual appearance that the G80 is narrower and taller in the rear than the G20?
There appears to be a lot of vertical mass between the rear decklid spoiler and the exhaust tips.
It’s the body-colored diffuser that makes it look so tall.
It is rated at 510 hp, as it has been reported for the BMW X3 M Competition on the BMW website. In the US, it is rated at 503 hp.
First thought: boy racer, that body colour diffusor..
Second thought: oh no, they did the i8 thing and now it looks like it defecates another car (a 911 on the i8).
Third thought: ok keep calm, they won’t dare to even ruin this one.
Black i8 on my street this week, still gorgeous even parked, great low-slung silhouette & detailing.
On your third thought… wanna bet?
BMW ruins everything they touch these days in terms of design.
Rear diffuser has to be a shop project.
Bumper looks like Pre-LCI E90.
Looks really boy-racer-y. I really hope they change that bumper. Not a great start.
500+ hp. boy racer-y, that bumper is a great finish, bumpers designed by gov’t. regs. 4 decades now.
There’s nothing good about that bumper. Thank God it’s just a pre-production version. I expect it to have something similar like an X3M.
That’s the engine.
This is going to be one hell of a machine
Tangerine DreaM.
That diffuser looks a bit weird to me
