Can a lighter, underpowered hybrid sportscar take on the flagship supercar from Audi? A BMW i8 plug-in hybrid was pitted against the Audi R8 in a drag race with no rolling start.

The previous generation V8 R8 is powered by a 4.2 liter engine producing 430 horsepower and 430 Nm (317 lb-ft) of torque. The power is sent to all four wheels via a 7-speed gearbox giving the supercar a 0 to 100 km/h (62 mph) acceleration time of 4.3 seconds.

BMW’s most advanced car built to date is powered by a hybrid system producing 362 horsepower and 570 Nm (420 lb-ft) for a 0 to 100 km/h of 4.4 seconds.

With its advanced lightweight construction, the i8 is significantly lower than the R8 (our estimation say around 110 lbs), but is that enough to beat the Audi R8?

How the heck are we supposed to tell who won the race without numbers? You can’t really tell who won just by looking at the video… :(

Really?! It’s clear that the i8 finished ahead.

yeah true but a side view would have been great.
Anyway that’s good for the i8… i wouldnt have thought so…

The article doesn’t seem to be correct, the R8 only has a “Plus” in the name is when it’s a V10 Plus. You gave the specs for the 4.2 liter V8, and there is no way an i8 could have beaten a V10 Plus with 550 HP, 0-60 in 3.7, and a top speed of 198 MPH.

        • Peder Norby says:

Ahhh, But Car and Driver has the BMW i8 at 3.6 seconds :)

          • Horatiu B. says:

How did they do that though?

          • Peder Norby says:

Not sure but Road and Track has the i8 at 3.8 seconds.
I’m just guessing here, but I think there was a bit of a software tweak before release and after BMW published the 0-60 mark of 4.2 seconds.

The video represents my experience with the car, it’s a bit sluggish until 20mph but then you get a real push up until around 125mph.

It looks as if the R8 gets the better start and the the i8 surges. Anyhow, great vid and thanks for posting it!

But BMW North America has it at 4.2 seconds, the article gives the specs for the R8 V8, but the video says V10 Plus, I have no idea what’s going on 😲

  2. CDspeed says:

There is no way the i8 could beat a V10 Plus, unless the driver of the R8 screwed up.

Honestly, I haven’t understood yet which is the meaning of these “drag” races… maybe “I have it (the engine) bigger than yours”?

  4. Simon says:

And then comes the Tesla Model S P90D and kills both of them with more people inside then R8 & i8 can have combined :D
