The second generation BMW X6 makes its debut today. The 2015 BMW X6 builds atop the success and design of the first generation X6 and brings to the Sports Activity Coupe design more fluid and sporty lines, aligning the X6 SAC to the current design language at BMW.

The interior has also been redesigned and while it borrows some cues from the F15 X5, it has its own personality with generous space, luxurious ambiance, and sportiness for different equipment lines and configurations.

Several variants will be offered for the F16 X6 family. First, the high-end BMW X6 xDrive50i developing 455 hp, then the BMW X6 xDrive30d with 258 hp six-cylinder in-line diesel engine and the 381 hp in the BMW X6 M50d. Next year BMW will launch the xDrive35i 306 hp) and BMW X6 xDrive40d 313 hp models.

A model-specific M Sport package can also be ordered for the new BMW X6 from launch. The dynamic character of the Sports Activity Coupe is accentuated by aerodynamically optimized body elements with large air intakes at the front end, strikingly contoured side skirts, a diffuser insert for the rear apron, as well as a bespoke BMW kidney grille design with bars in aluminum matte.

With the introduction of the all-new 2015 BMW X6, the company celebrates the second generation of the world’s first-ever Sports Activity Coupe. When the company took the bold step of combining the performance of a BMW Sports Activity Vehicle with the emotional design character of a traditional coupe, BMW created a vehicle concept that the market had not yet even conceived of. With global sales of 250,000 X6s to date, it is clearly a concept that the marketplace has embraced. In additional to an updated and even more extroverted design, the new X6 introduces the first rear-wheel drive model in the line-up with the X6 sDrive35i, powered by BMW’s award-winning 300 horsepower TwinPower Turbo inline six. It joins models with xDrive, BMW’s intelligent all-wheel drive system – the BMW X6 xDrive35i and the X6 xDrive50i featuring BMW’s updated 445 horsepower TwinPower Turbo 4.4-liter V8.

All models are equipped with BMW’s 8-speed Steptronic sport automatic transmission.

The new 2015 BMW X6 will again be produced exclusively at the company’s production facility in Spartanburg, South Carolina and will arrive in US showrooms in late 2014. Pricing will be announced closer to launch.

The extrovert design of the new BMW X6 blends the robustness and versatility of a BMW X model with the sporting elegance typical of the brand’s Coupes. The interior combines generous space with model-specific sports features and a luxurious ambience, while attractive design and equipment packages further highlight the exclusive style of the new BMW X6. The Design Pure Extravagance equipment package adds striking, high-quality accents to both the interior and the exterior. The M Sport package, meanwhile, includes specially selected features that enhance the vehicle’s dynamic character to immediately eye-catching effect. Also available from launch are model-specific features from BMW Individual.

The new BMW X6 additionally comes with a suitably exclusive roster of standard equipment which goes well beyond that of the previous model: bi- xenon headlights, 19-inch light-alloy wheels, automatic tailgate operation and the 8-speed Steptronic sport transmission with steering wheel shift paddles are all included, as are leather trim, two-zone climate control, auto-dimming rear-view mirror and the Driving Assistant safety package from BMW ConnectedDrive. Lending functionality an extra boost are the 40 : 20 : 40 split/folding rear seat backrests, which allow load compartment capacity to expand from 580 litres to as much as 1,525 litres (75 litres more than the predecessor model).

The line-up of engines available from the December 2014 launch of the new BMW X6 (fuel consumption combined: 9.7 – 6.0 l/100 km [29.1 –47.1 mpg imp]; CO2 emissions combined: 225 – 157 g/km) consists of the latest-generation V8 developing 330 kW/450 hp for the BMW X6 xDrive50i, a 190 kW/258 hp six-cylinder in-line diesel engine for the BMW X6 xDrive30d and another straight-six diesel with three turbochargers and 280 kW/381 hp in the BMW X6 M50d. Ensuring that the noticeably increased performance of the new BMW X6 is accompanied by an up to 22 per cent reduction in average fuel consumption are BMW TwinPower Turbo technology, the standard-fitted eight-speed Steptronic sport transmission, extensive BMW EfficientDynamics technology, weight-saving optimisations and enhanced aerodynamics. In spring 2015 the BMW X6 xDrive35i (225 kW/306 hp) and BMW X6 xDrive40d (230 kW/313 hp) will be added to the model range.

The standard – and permanently active – intelligent all-wheel-drive system BMW xDrive optimises traction, directional stability and cornering dynamics, as the situation requires. For improved dynamics, xDrive can optionally link up with adaptive suspension packages, including Dynamic Performance Control.

Dynamic Performance Control is offered together with Dynamic Drive active roll stabilisation as part of the Dynamic adaptive suspension package to deliver a targeted improvement in the car’s sporty handling attributes. Further enhanced ride comfort can be achieved courtesy of air suspension at the rear axle and Dynamic Damper Control, which are included in both the Comfort adaptive suspension package and Adaptive M suspension (standard on the BMW X6 M50d and part of the M Sport package for the other model variants), which also offers bespoke, sports-oriented suspension tuning. The Professional adaptive suspension package, meanwhile, combines the features of Comfort and Dynamic.

Innovative options and BMW ConnectedDrive features.

Adaptive LED headlights, Comfort Access (including hands-free tailgate opening and closing) and other high-class options underline the innovative character of the new BMW X6. Driving pleasure and long-distance comfort, meanwhile, can be further enhanced by features including the Navigation System Professional with Touch Controller, Bang & Olufsen high-end surround-sound system and new Rear Entertainment System Professional.

The wide variety of features available through BMW ConnectedDrive includes a – in some cases – unique range of driver assistance systems and mobility services. Available on the options list are items such as the BMW Head-Up Display, Driving Assistant Plus with Traffic Jam Assistant, the BMW Parking Assistant, Surround View and BMW Night Vision with Dynamic Light Spot and Speed Limit Info, as well as all BMW ConnectedDrive services and Online Entertainment. The Intelligent Emergency Call function is part of standard specification for the new BMW X6.

The design of the new BMW X6 body combines the robust presence of a BMW X model with the hallmark sporting elegance of the brand’s Coupes to create an unmistakably athletic appearance. The long bonnet, long wheelbase, short front overhang and set-back passenger compartment are characteristic design features of a BMW. Its high window sill and large wheel arches, plus the short distance between the front axle and the instrument panel, all point to stability, highlighting the Sports Activity Coupe’s ties to the BMW X model family.

The high seating position of the new BMW X6 is joined by high-quality materials and elaborately sculpted surfaces to create a luxurious cabin ambience. The sense of exclusive sportiness is generated by the driver- oriented design of the cockpit, the innovative control and display elements, and lines which streak dynamically from the instrument panel into the door panels to form a ring around the interior. The luxurious ambience can be further enhanced with individual accents, created by cleverly combining colours and materials, to accentuate the elegant, robust or sporting side of the new BMW X6’s character, as desired.

Exterior design: dynamic proportions, fluid lines, striking accents.

Dynamic proportions and flowing lines symbolise its sporty, agile handling on the road, while the muscular and robust aspects of the car’s design point to its versatility and appetite for action off the beaten track. At the front end of the car, the X-shaped contour lines of the bumper, the matt-silver underbody protection, the particularly powerful design of the BMW kidney grille and the arrangement of the twin circular headlights and front foglamps are the most prominent signature features of a BMW X model. The large headlight units reach in as far as the BMW kidney grille and extend outwards well into the side panels. Sweeping chrome inserts and the prominently three-dimensional design of the lights underline the sophisticated character of the standard- fitted bi-xenon units. Optional Adaptive LED Headlights can be specified for the new BMW X6.

Among the other ingredients in the extrovert, athletic looks of the new BMW X6 are the clearly visible details designed to optimise the car’s aerodynamics. They include the air deflectors on the front wheel arches, the Air Curtains integrated into the outer air intakes of the front apron and the Air Breathers in the side panels, which team up to reduce turbulence in the front wheel arches.

The side view of the new BMW X6 is likewise defined by eye-catching lines and sharply-drawn contours. The wedge shape of the silhouette is accentuated by a model-specific interpretation of the double swage lines. Emerging from the front wheel arches, the first rises steadily up along the new BMW X6 to the rear door handles. A second swage line sets out on a lower path, extending in a dynamic sweep into the rear lights. The eye is therefore drawn immediately to both the dynamism of the new BMW X6 and its strong presence, thanks not only to the coupe-style roofline but also a glasshouse whose light, intricate look contrasts with the powerful body.

At the rear, horizontal lines emphasise the width and solid stance of the new BMW X6, while the surface design in the area of the high-opening tailgate, a powerfully formed bumper and flat rear apron signal robust athleticism. The three-dimensional LED light strips of the two-section, L-shaped rear lights, meanwhile, create a striking night-time look. As at the front of the car, a matt silver-coloured underbody protection element marks out the lower end of the body.

Customers can choose from two non-metallic and nine metallic colours for the body paintwork of the new BMW X6, including the new-to-the-range Sparkling Storm brilliant effect and Flamenco Red brilliant effect variants. Available as an option for the new BMW X6 are aluminium footplates and roof rails in a high-gloss black or Aluminium satinated finish.

Boasting generous levels of spaciousness, the high seating position typical of BMW X models and high-quality, beautifully finished materials, the interior of the new BMW X6 creates the perfect environment for a supreme driving experience cloaked in an air of luxury. The three-dimensional design and horizontal structure of the layered surfaces underline the broad sweep of the instrument panel, which – along with the upper-arm trim panels – features a high-quality Softskin surface with black decorative stitching as standard. The interior trim elements in standard Oxide Silver dark matt, Poplar Grain fine wood (BMW X6 xDrive50i) or Aluminium Hexagon (BMW X6 M50d) now sit atop a high-gloss black surface, which is bordered on its lower edge by an accent strip in Pearl Gloss Chrome. Interior trim strips in Brushed Aluminium, American Oak fine wood, Fineline Stripe fine wood and exquisite Fineline Pure textured wood can also be specified as an option.

The ambient lighting designs included in the lighting package lend extra emphasis to the visual unity between the instrument panel and door panels. LED units arranged in a wrap-around contour line, as well as in other areas of the interior, create an alluring effect. Blue, white and orange light can be selected, either in monochrome or in six pre-stored combinations via the iDrive system.

The instrument cluster and the displays for the climate control and ventilation in the new BMW X6 all feature black-panel technology. The content, presentation and colour of the screens in the optional multifunction instrument display vary according to the mode selected by means of the Driving Experience Control switch. The freestanding, up to 10.25-inch flatscreen Control Display comes as part of the standard-fitted iDrive operating system.

A model-specific sports leather steering wheel with multifunction buttons and shift paddles, a gearshift lever in sporty design and a rear seat bench whose two outer seats have a distinct individual seat character and which offers large storage compartments in the centre armrest all mark out the distinctive style of the new BMW X6’s interior. Another model-specific equipment detail are the knee pads on the centre console, which – depending on the equipment option – feature contrast stitching on their leather surface and an accent strip in Pearl Gloss Chrome.

Equipment, Design Pure Extravagance and M Sport package: For enhanced functionality and exclusivity.

A particularly extensive selection of optional extras, the new Design Pure Extravagance equipment variant and the model-specific M Sport package create additional scope for tailoring the new BMW X6 precisely to individual requirements in terms of charisma, luxury and dynamics.

Customers can choose from six colours for the standard Dakota leather trim, including the new variants Cognac and Coral red with black accent seams. The new BMW X6 M50d, meanwhile, comes as standard with sports seats in an anthracite-coloured leather/Alcantara combination. Seat heating for the driver and front passenger is included as standard, while heated outer rear seats are available as an option. Also on the options list are sports seats (standard in the BMW X6 M50d), comfort seats, electric seat adjustment with memory function and active seat ventilation. Four-zone climate control can be specified as an alternative to the standard two-zone system, allowing individual temperature and ventilation control in the rear compartment as well. Driving pleasure and long-distance comfort can also be enhanced with features including the Navigation System Professional with Touch Controller, the Bang & Olufsen high-end surround-sound system and the new Rear Entertainment System Professional. All model variants of the new BMW X6 feature 19-inch light-alloy wheels as standard. Further 19-inch as well as 20-inch light-alloys are optionally available.

Optimised functionality: variable-use load compartment, hands-free tailgate opening and closing.

The variability of the interior has also been raised another notch. The rear seat backrests can now be split/folded 40 : 20 : 40, allowing the capacity of the load compartment to be increased in stages from 580 to a maximum 1,525 litres. There are 10/75 litres of extra storage space in the new BMW X6 compared with the predecessor model. Numerous stowage compartments, plus door pockets which can accommodate 1.5-litre bottles at the front and one-litre bottles in the rear, also contribute to impressive levels of functionality in everyday and touring use.

Automatic tailgate operation is also included in the standard specification for the new BMW X6. The tailgate can now be both opened and closed via remote control and from the driver’s seat at the touch of a button. Maximum convenience when it comes to loading and unloading the new BMW X6 is provided by the hands-free tailgate opening and closing function, which comes as part of the optional Comfort Access feature. Sensors detect foot movements underneath the rear apron and send out signals which prompt the electric tailgate into action.

The tailgate comes as standard with a Soft Close Automatic function, which is also available for the doors as an option. The new BMW X6 can also be ordered with an electrically operated glass sunroof whose surface has the same width but is almost 12 centimetres longer than on the predecessor model. The optional roof rails can be specified in two variants: high-gloss black and Aluminium satinated.

Design Pure Extravagance: lending the exterior and interior an exclusive aura.

Customers keen to experience the new BMW X6 beyond its standard form may well be attracted by a design and equipment variant which provides a particularly vivid showcase for the assured presence and exclusive aura of the Sports Activity Coupe. A new Design Pure Extravagance option is available for both the exterior and the interior, with each package also available separately to complement standard specification. In addition, the Design Pure Extravagance line for the interior can be combined with the M Sport package.

The Design Pure Extravagance option for the exterior helps give the new BMW X6 an unmistakably exclusive appearance with a host of details, some of which – in addition to their uniform Cerium Grey colour scheme – also have a model-specific design. These include optical underbody protection elements in stainless steel for the front and rear apron, illuminated door sill strips and footplates in aluminium for the driver’s and front passenger’s door, kidney grille bars with a distinctive geometry, bespoke inserts and bars for the air intakes, distinctive trim for the Air Breathers on the front side panels, the trim strip on the trailing edge of the tailgate, and the exterior mirror caps. Adding a unique flourish to the side view is the combination of exterior mirror bases and B- and C-pillar trim in high-gloss black, plus aluminium surrounds in Cerium Grey for the side windows and exterior mirror caps. Another exclusive feature of the Design Pure Extravagance line for the exterior are 20-inch light-alloy wheels in V-spoke design and bi-colour finish with mixed-size tyres.

The Design Pure Extravagance package for the interior is available in a choice of two similarly stylish variants sporting different colour schemes. This option centres around Exclusive Nappa leather trim with extended features, an equipment item that includes seat surfaces in the new Ivory White/Black or Cognac/Black bi-colour variants. The particularly high-grade leather in Ivory White or Cognac is applied to the seats, centre console, armrests and door panels. In addition, the upper-arm trim panels and instrument panel are both lined with black fulled leather which, like the black bolsters of the seat surfaces and backrests, are adorned with contrast stitching. Depending on the colour selected for the leather trim, the car’s exclusive interior ambience is rounded off by American Oak or Fineline Stripe fine wood interior trim strips. The Design Pure Extravagance line for the interior also comprises a car key with buttons in Pearl Gloss Chrome.

Making a clear case for maximum dynamics: M Sport package for the new BMW X6.

A model-specific M Sport package can also be ordered for the new BMW X6 from launch. The dynamic character of the Sports Activity Coupe is accentuated by aerodynamically optimised body elements with large air intakes at the front end, strikingly contoured side skirts, a diffuser insert for the rear apron, as well as a bespoke BMW kidney grille design with bars in aluminium matt (BMW X6 xDrive30d: black) and high-gloss chrome exhaust tailpipe embellishers in the style of the eight-cylinder model. The lower borders of the wheel arches along with the side skirts are painted in body colour. The M Sport package also includes BMW Individual High-gloss Shadow Line trim, 19-inch M light-alloy wheels in twin-spoke design, Adaptive M suspension with specially tuned Dynamic Damper Control, and rear-axle air suspension with automatic self-levelling.

As well as aluminium door sill strips bearing the M logo and the anthracite- coloured BMW Individual roof liner, features including electrically adjustable sports seats for the driver and front passenger in leather/Alcantara, interior trim strips in Aluminium Hexagon, an M leather steering wheel and an M driver’s footrest all combine to bring an intense aura of sporty driving to the interior of the new BMW X6. A specially designed car key is also part of the M Sport package.

Engines, gearboxes and BMW xDrive: Imposing performance, exemplary efficiency.

Another feature of the trailblazing concept behind the new BMW X6 is powertrain technology which combines enthralling performance with exemplary efficiency. BMW TwinPower Turbo petrol and diesel engines boasting both increased output and reduced fuel consumption and emissions, an eight- speed Steptronic sport transmission fresh from an intensive course of further development, additional BMW EfficientDynamics technology and the latest version of the BMW xDrive intelligent all-wheel-drive system ensure the new BMW X6 has what it takes to extend its lead in this area.

All variants of the new BMW X6 comply with the EU6 exhaust emission standard. The nitrogen oxide limits for the diesel models are met using a NOX adsorber catalyst and an SCR catalyst with urea (AdBlue) injection.

V8 petrol engine powers the new BMW X6 xDrive50i: standstill to 100 km/h (62 mph) in 4.8 seconds.

The flagship engine for the new BMW X6 is a V8 petrol unit. The latest version of the 4.4-litre engine at the heart of the new BMW X6 xDrive50i increases the predecessor model’s maximum output by 10 per cent – to 330 kW/450 hp (+30 kW/43 hp) – yet posts a 22 per cent drop in average fuel consumption. The engine’s suite of BMW TwinPower Turbo technology now welcomes VALVETRONIC variable valve timing alongside its two turbochargers and High Precision Direct Petrol Injection, endowing the eight- cylinder engine with improved responsiveness and pulling power and also giving it extra efficiency. Peak torque of 650 Newton metres / 479 lb-ft (+50 Nm/37 lb-ft) is now on tap between 2,000 and 4,500 rpm, and the new BMW X6 xDrive50i powers from 0 to 100 km/h (62 mph) in 4.8 seconds – 0.6 seconds quicker than the previous model. Fuel consumption is 9.7 litres per 100 kilometres (29.1 mpg imp) and CO2 emissions stand at 225 –227 grams per kilometre (according to the EU test cycle and depending on tyre format).

A six-cylinder in-line engine developing 225 kW/306 hp will be added to the petrol line-up in spring 2015, propelling the new BMW X6 xDrive35i from 0 to 100 km/h (62 mph) in 6.4 seconds. Average fuel consumption in the EU test cycle is 8.5 – 8.6 litres per 100 kilometres (33.2 – 32.9 mpg imp) and CO2 emissions come in at 198 – 200 grams per kilometre (according to the EU test cycle and depending on tyre format).

New BMW X6 xDrive30d: more power, lower fuel consumption and emissions.

The already exemplary balance between performance and fuel consumption achieved by its predecessor has been improved upon once again by the new BMW X6 xDrive30d. Its 3.0-litre diesel engine benefits from BMW TwinPower Turbo technology comprising a turbocharger system with variable inlet geometry and common rail direct injection. The straight-six unit generates a maximum 190 kW/258 hp (+10 kW/13 hp) and peak torque of 560 Newton metres / 413 lb-ft (+20 Nm/15 lb-ft) between 1,500 and 3,000 rpm.

This increase in muscle paves the way for acceleration of 0 to 100 km/h (62 mph) in 6.7 seconds (-0.8 seconds). The average fuel consumption of the new BMW X6 xDrive30d stands at 6.0 litres per 100 kilometres (47.1 mpg imp) – a 19 per cent improvement over its predecessor model – while CO2 emissions are between 157 and 159 grams per kilometre (according to the EU test cycle and depending on tyre format).

Also lining up with an extra dose of sporty performance and efficiency is the new BMW X6 M50d (Chapter 6), which is concurrently available from the launch of the second-generation Sports Activity Coupe. A third diesel engine variant – the new BMW X6 xDrive40d – will follow in spring 2015. Its six- cylinder in-line diesel engine with multi-stage turbocharging and maximum output of 230 kW/313 hp produces acceleration of 0 to 100 km/h (62 mph) in 5.8 seconds. The average fuel consumption of the new BMW X6 xDrive40d is between 6.2 and 6.3 litres per 100 kilometres (45.6 – 44.8 mpg imp) and CO2 emissions are recorded at 163 – 165 grams per kilometre (according to the EU test cycle and depending on tyre format).

Eight-speed Steptronic sport transmission with Launch Control.

All of the engines available for the new BMW X6 link up as standard with an eight-speed Steptronic sport transmission, which stands out with its exceptional precision, high internal efficiency and impressive fast-shifting ability. The driver can also take over manual control of gear changes using either the bespoke gear selector or shift paddles on the steering wheel. Added to which, the latest generation of the sport automatic transmission offers a Launch Control function to enable traction-optimised, dynamically maximised acceleration off the line.

In conjunction with the Navigation System Professional, the automatic transmission is also able to take account of the route profile in calculating its gear shifts. Based on navigation data, the gearbox adapts its shift strategy to the situation at hand as the car approaches a corner, roundabout or motorway slip road, for example. If the vehicle is approaching a crossroads or a bend, it changes down early to the most appropriate gear, making optimum use of the engine braking effect. The gearbox then shifts to the optimal gear to accelerate dynamically out of the bend. Furthermore, interaction with the navigation system allows unnecessary upshifts between two successive bends to be avoided.

Extended BMW EfficientDynamics technology as standard.

As well as the COMFORT, SPORT and SPORT+ settings, the Driving Experience Control switch on the centre console also allows the driver to activate ECO PRO mode. In ECO PRO mode, the engine management, accelerator response and transmission characteristics are systematically tailored to support a particularly fuel-efficient, low-rpm driving style. At the same time, ECO PRO mode also programs electrically powered functions like the climate control, heated seats and heated exterior mirrors for extra-efficient energy management. ECO PRO mode also includes a coasting function, which decouples the engine from the rest of the powertrain whenever the driver lifts off the accelerator at speeds between 50 and 160 km/h (approx. 30 – 100 mph) and doesn’t brake at the same time. This allows the new BMW X6 to coast without engine braking, ensuring maximised fuel efficiency.

The optional Navigation System Professional allows highly fuel-efficient ECO PRO navigation routes to be selected. When the route guidance function is activated, the Proactive Driving Assistant also tells the driver exactly when best to ease off the accelerator – in the interests of saving fuel – when approaching corners or a speed-restricted section of road, for example.

The array of powertrain and chassis-related BMW EfficientDynamics technology fitted as standard includes the Auto Start Stop function to prevent unnecessary fuel consumption when stationary at junctions or in traffic jams, Brake Energy Regeneration with the BMW EfficientDynamics display in the cockpit, the need-based operation of ancillary components such as the fuel and coolant pumps, active air flap control (depending on model and equipment levels), Electric Power Steering and low-roll-resistance tyres.

BMW xDrive and Dynamic Performance Control: intelligent all-wheel drive and torque vectoring.

By constantly shifting drive between the front and rear wheels as required, BMW xDrive provides a very special take on the driving pleasure for which BMW is renowned. In its latest version, the transfer case of the intelligent all- wheel drive displays enhanced efficiency and a 1.4 kg reduction in weight. The link-up between the all-wheel-drive system and DSC (Dynamic Stability Control) even allows the drive split to be adjusted in advance. As a result, all- wheel-drive performance is on hand even before slip can occur – not only on snow and loose ground, but also through dynamically taken corners – and the engine’s full power is transformed into driving pleasure.

Dynamic Performance Control allows the distribution of power to be even more finely adjusted. Likewise electronically controlled, this system is integrated into the rear differential. Working in tandem with xDrive, it creates an intoxicating blend of handling dynamics and directional stability. Dynamic Performance Control, which is available as part of the optional Dynamic and Professional adaptive suspension packages, seamlessly varies the power split between the rear wheels (torque vectoring). This results in further noticeable improvements in steering response and roadholding at all speeds. Dynamic Performance Control maintains its stabilising action if the driver lifts off the accelerator through a corner.

The all-wheel driving experience is further enriched – above all off the beaten track – by the new xDrive status display in the Control Display. Boasting 3D graphics, this standard-fitted feature shows real-time information on body roll and pitch. In vehicles equipped with the optional Navigation System Professional, a compass display is additionally shown in the instrument cluster. Also contributing to safe and self-assured progress on challenging terrain is the standard Hill Descent Control (HDC) system.

THE NEW 2015 BMW X6

Chassis and body: A compelling fusion of dynamics and comfort.

The ongoing evolution of the Sports Activity Coupe concept has enabled the new BMW X6 to offer an even broader variety of qualities than its predecessor. Enhanced dynamics go hand in hand with improved efficiency, the car’s sporting prowess and versatility have been optimised, as have ride comfort and safety, the cabin ambience has gained in luxury and interior functionality has also been taken to the next level. Much of the credit for this eye-catching progress across all areas goes to the targeted advances in chassis technology made with the new BMW X6 and a body structure rooted in the principle of intelligent lightweight design.

The combination of a double-wishbone, double-joint front axle and the integral rear axle patented by BMW – which proved its mettle in the previous model and has since benefited from detailed optimisation – underpins a blend of sporting agility and impressive ride comfort that none of its rivals can match. Further improvements have been made in various areas, including the car’s directional stability, the friction coefficient of the wheel bearings, tyre noise and weight, which has been reduced by two kilograms at the front axle alone. The optional trailer coupling now has an electrically swivelling ball head and allows towing capacity of up to 3.5 tonnes. When in use, the trailer stability control system integrated into the DSC (Dynamic Stability Control) system is activated. This system is highly effective in preventing possible rolling motions through the trailer by means of carefully calculated brake inputs.

The new BMW X6 is fitted as standard with Electric Power Steering including Servotronic speed-sensitive power assistance. Meanwhile, Active Steering – available as an option – also adjusts the steering ratio to the car’s current speed. This reduces the steering effort required for low-speed manoeuvring, for example, and provides precise responses and clear feedback at high speeds. The electromechanical parking brake with Auto Hold function is also standard specification on the new BMW X6.

Chassis packages tailor sporting responses and comfort levels to customer requirements.

Individual requirements in terms of ride comfort and sports performance can be fulfilled with the chassis packages available for the new BMW X6. The Comfort adaptive suspension package includes Dynamic Damper Control and air suspension with automatic self-levelling for the rear axle. The electronic control system adapts the car’s damping to the road conditions and driving situation at hand. Adaptive M suspension, which comes as standard for the new BMW X6 M50d (Chapter 6) and is part of the M Sport package for all other model variants, offers the same functionality. Activating SPORT or SPORT+ mode delivers particularly firm spring and damper characteristics.
The elements of the Dynamic adaptive suspension package intervene noticeably to imbue the BMW X6 with particularly sporty handling characteristics through corners. Here, Dynamic Performance Control and the Dynamic Drive active roll stabilisation system optimise directional stability and reduce body roll. Drivers looking to maximise both comfort and dynamic flair, meanwhile, can also opt for the Professional adaptive suspension package. This option combines the features of the Comfort and Dynamic packages to create an all-round solution that specialises in ensuring exceptional driving pleasure, whatever the situation.

Intelligent lightweight design: increased body rigidity, reduced weight.

The success of the intelligent lightweight design techniques applied in the development of the body structure for the new BMW X6 can be seen in the car’s fuel consumption as well as its agility in the hands of a sporty driver. Measures such as the considered use of high and ultra-high tensile as well as hot-stamped steels lend the body improved torsional stiffness compared with the predecessor model and increase the strength of the safety passenger cell.

Employing ultra-high-strength steels, and the use of thermoplastics in the side panels, aluminium in the bonnet and magnesium in the instrument panel support, all help to reduce the car’s weight. The new BMW X6 also sets new standards when it comes to aerodynamics. Air Curtains, Air Breathers, optimised airflow over the rear, air deflectors on the front wheel arches, cooling air flaps (depending on the model) which can be actively closed in both the upper and the lower section of the front end, and an array of other details allow the car’s drag coefficient to drop as far as Cd 0.32 (BMW X6 xDrive30d).

Comprehensive occupant safety and optimised pedestrian protection.

Additional deformation zones have been created at the front end of the car to optimise pedestrian protection. The new BMW X6 has also been designed with an “active” bonnet system: in the event of a collision with a pedestrian or cyclist, the system automatically raises the rear part of the bonnet. This creates additional deformation capacity, and the risk of injury is reduced. The standard safety equipment of the new BMW X6 also includes front airbags, side airbags integrated into the seat backrests, head airbags for the front and rear seats, three-point inertia-reel seatbelts for all seats, belt force limiters and belt tensioners for the front seats and ISOFIX child seat attachments in the rear.

The new BMW X6 M50d: More agility, more precision, pure emotion.

The launch of the second-generation BMW X6 will go hand-in-hand with the arrival of a BMW M Performance Automobile developed on the basis of the new Sports Activity Coupe. The new BMW X6 M50d is powered by a 3.0-litre six-cylinder in-line diesel engine with M Performance TwinPower Turbo technology and a maximum output of 280 kW/381 hp. Its driving properties are all about extraordinary agility and precisely controllable handling. Like its engine – the most powerful diesel unit in the BMW line-up – the new model’s eight-speed Steptronic sport transmission, BMW xDrive all-wheel-drive system, specially tuned chassis technology, aerodynamically optimised body design and cockpit design all bear the signature of BMW M GmbH.

The expertise amassed by BMW M GmbH in motor racing and the development of high-performance sports cars has been brought to bear in the targeted modification of individual components. And this know-how is also evident in the hallmark M precision with which the chassis configuration, braking performance and aerodynamic balance of the new BMW X6 M50d are matched with the engine’s performance characteristics. This gives the BMW M Performance Automobile a distinctive, extremely sporty profile – one which is underlined by bespoke design accents and turns the driving pleasure already conjured up by a BMW X model into an inimitable, emotion-rich experience.

The straight-six diesel engine under the bonnet of the BMW X6 M50d is another example of the BMW Group’s stand-out expertise in the field of powertrain development. Its M Performance TwinPower Turbo technology uses three turbochargers – which work together in a precision-adjusted multi- stage process – and common rail direct injection (with piezo injectors generating maximum pressure of 2,200 bar) to deliver maximum output of 280 kW/381 hp and peak torque of 740 Newton metres (546 lb-ft).
The engine powering the new BMW X6 M50d displays performance characteristics cast in the classical M mould – most tellingly in its ability to maintain maximum power output over a wide rev range. The key here is an innovative turbocharging system; two relatively small turbochargers and one large turbo dovetail precisely to deliver the amount of power required. The low moment of inertia of the small turbochargers is exploited to the full to deliver razor-sharp responses and the link-up with the large turbo is maximised to generate as much charge pressure as possible – just as the driving situation demands. The new BMW X6 M50d accelerates from 0 to 100 km/h (62 mph) in 5.2 seconds (0.1 seconds more quickly than its predecessor) and boasts impressive power reserves for sporty mid-range sprints, even at higher speeds.

At the same time, the average fuel consumption of the BMW M Performance Automobile has been reduced by 14 per cent and now stands at just 6.6 litres per 100 kilometres (42.8 mpg imp). CO2 emissions come in at 174 grams per kilometre. The new BMW X6 M50d thus displays a genuine commitment to delivering impressive efficiency at this extremely high level of performance.

In order to ensure optimum conversion of engine power into dynamic performance, both the eight-speed Steptronic sport transmission and BMW xDrive have been tuned precisely to the power unit’s performance characteristics. The M-specific set-up of the all-wheel-drive system has been optimised to enhance the new BMW X6 M50d’s dynamics, helping it to retain a rear-wheel bias under dynamic cornering. Even when the car is stable through corners, a larger proportion of the engine’s power is channelled to the rear axle to enhance agility and stave off understeer.

M-specific chassis delivers precise handling properties.

The likewise model-specific chassis technology of the new BMW X6 M50d paves the way for hallmark M handling responses which allow precise car control even in dynamically exacting situations. The standard Adaptive M suspension of the new BMW X6 M50d comprises Dynamic Damper Control and air suspension with automatic self-levelling at the rear axle. The spring and damper system, support mounts and elastokinematics of the front and rear axle, as well as Servotronic mapping of the Electric Power Steering, all have an M-specific configuration. And that’s a recipe for familiar M handling characteristics, headlined by reduced roll, extremely high precision on turn-in and a linear build-up of transverse forces through dynamically taken corners.

The new BMW X6 M50d is available as an option with the Dynamic adaptive suspension package. This comprises Dynamic Performance Control – with variable distribution of power between the rear wheels (torque vectoring) – and active roll stabilisation. These systems imbue the new BMW X6 M50d with even sharper cornering dynamics and further reduce body roll during direction changes.
Large brakes – featuring 385-millimetre discs at the front and 345-millimetre discs at the rear – ensure powerful and fade-free deceleration even under heavy loads. The standard-fitted 19-inch M light-alloy wheels in twin-spoke design are, like the two versions of the optional 20-inch M light-alloy wheels in twin-spoke design, fitted with mixed-size tyres.

The BMW ConnectedDrive systems fall into two categories. The driver assistance systems provide important information about the current driving situation, amongst other things helping to improve the driver’s focus on the road and traffic. They also assist drivers in challenging or uncomfortable driving situations. The second category of system comprises
BMW ConnectedDrive Services and Apps, which offer a host of different functions. Via a mobile phone or internet connection, these functions supply information and entertainment services to support a driving experience which is safe, comfortable and full of interest and variety. The standard-fitted iDrive system with Control Display, centre console-mounted Controller and favourites buttons provides intuitive, low-distraction operation of these functions. The optional Navigation System Professional comes with a 10.25-inch central dashboard display and a Touch Controller with touch-sensitive interface for inputting numbers and characters.

Driving Assistant safety package as standard on the new BMW X6.

In addition to cruise control with braking function, the standard specification of the new BMW X6 also includes the Driving Assistant safety package. This camera-based driver assistance system includes Lane Departure Warning, which can be used whenever the vehicle is travelling at a speed of more than 70 km/h (44 mph). Lane Departure Warning alerts drivers with a visible signal in the instrument cluster and a vibration of the steering wheel rim if they have inadvertently drifted out of their lane. The package also includes a Pedestrian and Collision Warning system with Braking function.

This system detects preceding vehicles and, at speeds up to 60 km/h (37 mph), also pedestrians who are on a potential collision course with the vehicle. Visual and audible warnings are given if a hazardous situation is detected, and at the same time the brake system is primed so to reduce stopping distance. At speeds of up to 60 km/h (37mph), moderate “hazard” braking is also actuated, to reduce vehicle speed and to alert the driver to the critical situation.

Optional: Driving Assistant Plus including Traffic Jam Assistant.

The optional Driving Assistant Plus package provides even more extensive support. In addition to the Driving Assistant functions, this system also includes the Active Cruise Control system with Stop & Go function which primarily enhances comfort and safety in slow-moving and stop-go traffic. The task of maintaining a safe following distance can be delegated to this system at any speed up to 210 km/h (130 mph). A combination of a front camera and full-range radar sensors registers preceding traffic and stationary vehicles. If the driver fails to react to a warning of an imminent frontal collision, Driving Assistant

Plus automatically brakes the vehicle, if necessary using maximum deceleration.

Driving Assistant Plus also includes the Traffic Jam Assistant. At speeds up to 60 km/h (37 mph), this function not only controls following distance but also keeps the vehicle on track. As long as the driver keeps at least one hand on the steering wheel, the Traffic Jam Assistant provides steering assistance to keep the vehicle in the centre of its lane.

Speed Limit Info shows any speed limits or overtaking restrictions for a particular road in the instrument cluster, while the Lane Change Warning system, which is likewise optional, assesses the traffic situation on multi-lane roads in order to prevent critical situations when pulling out to overtake. When performing an intentional lane change at any speed upwards of 20 km/h
(12 mph), the driver is warned by a visual signal and a steering wheel vibration if another vehicle is hidden in the critical area behind or alongside the new BMW X6.

Identifying and driving into parking spaces made easy with the BMW Parking Assistant.

Additional convenience when driving in town is provided by the optionally available BMW Parking Assistant. This system helps the driver identify and drive into parallel parking spaces. When the parking button is pressed, the new BMW X6 parks itself automatically in the selected parking space. While performing this precisely controlled manoeuvre, the system provides the necessary steering input, operates the accelerator and brake pedal, and selects the correct gear.

Further aids to easy manoeuvring include Park Distance Control (PDC), with sensors at the front and rear of the vehicle (standard on the new BMW X6 M50d), the optional rear-view camera and optional Surround View system, which shows a 360-degree view of the vehicle and its surroundings in the Control Display, while the Panorama View front and rear monitoring function provides a better view of cross-traffic when emerging from an exit with poor visibility. The image provided by the cameras is shown in the Control Display, while an audible warning signal indicates objects approaching the car from the side.

The optional Active Protection system takes numerous steps in critical situations to reduce the severity of a potential accident. It closes the side window and, if fitted, the sunroof, pulls the front seatbelts tight and adjusts the backrest of the front passenger seat to an upright position. Active Protection now also includes an Attention Assistant feature, which analyses driving performance and advises when it is time to take a break.

At-a-glance monitoring: multifunction display, BMW Head-Up Display, LED fog lights, BMW Selective Beam, BMW Night Vision.

A further option unique in the BMW X model segment is the multifunction display. This 10.25-inch display changes its appearance depending on the selected Driving Experience Control mode. Clear differentiation between the various modes is provided by different-style graphics and different colour schemes. In COMFORT mode, the display shows a classic array of four circular dials. In ECO PRO mode, the rev counter is transformed into an EfficientDynamics display. In SPORT mode, the speed is displayed digitally in the form of a large figure in the centre of the speedometer, while the currently engaged gear is displayed in the centre of the rev counter.

For the new BMW X6, the BMW Head-Up Display – which projects important information in full colour onto the windscreen – now includes additional content. When required, telephone contact lists and entertainment information can also be projected into the driver’s direct field of view. As well as vehicle speed, 3D graphics also show Check Control messages, navigation information – including lane recommendations, speed limits and overtaking restrictions – and further information supplied by the driver assistance systems.

Driving enjoyment and safety at night can be enhanced by the optional Adaptive LED Headlights with BMW Selective Beam for optimised high beam use and optional LED fog lights. Also available for the new BMW X6 is the BMW Night Vision system, which now detects not only pedestrians but also animals, and also includes Dynamic Light Spot. The system relays a real-time video image to the Control Display showing people, larger animals and other heat-radiating objects, even if they are outside the headlight beam. A warning is provided if there is a risk of collision. The Dynamic Light Spot is generated by a special headlight which “spotlights” any persons or animals detected by the system, thereby directing the driver’s attention to possible hazards in good time.

Standard specification: Intelligent Emergency Call with automatic vehicle location.

The new BMW X6 is equipped as standard with a built-in SIM card, which is a basic requirement for using the Intelligent Emergency Call system. In many markets Intelligent Emergency Call itself, which features automatic vehicle location and accident severity detection, is also supplied as standard. The current generation of this system relays important information to the BMW Call Centre in the event of a crash, such as vehicle position (accurate to within metres), chassis number, vehicle model, vehicle colour and data from the onboard sensors. The system also detects how many people are travelling in the vehicle, which airbags were activated and the intensity of the impact. This makes it easier to alert the emergency services promptly and to supply them with appropriate information.

Perfect connectivity with BMW ConnectedDrive Services available at all times.

The built-in SIM card also supports the transmission of BMW TeleServices data, in-car internet access, the Concierge Service – a telephone information service which BMW ConnectedDrive customers can use, say, to make hotel reservations, look for addresses and telephone numbers or check opening times – along with the Remote Services and access to the BMW Online portal. If the optional Navigation System Professional is specified, it also supports Real Time Traffic Information, which provides drivers with precise traffic information and congestion reports.

Another standard specification on the new BMW X6 is a hands-free system with USB port, while the BMW ConnectedDrive Office functions, supported either by the customer’s smartphone or by the built-in SIM card, allow the Sports Activity Coupe to be used as a mobile office. Emails, appointments, contact lists, calendar entries and notes can be shown on the Control Display. A dictating function converts spoken notes into text, which can be stored and forwarded as an SMS or email message.

Many BMW ConnectedDrive services can be installed at any time using apps, either via the smartphone or via the built-in SIM card. Amongst other things these apps support web radio functions, social media functions such Facebook and Twitter, and the BMW ConnectedDrive range of online entertainment features, which offer access to more than 24 million tracks and thousands of audio books. This flexible apps strategy makes it possible to incorporate not just proprietary BMW Group apps but also BMW Apps-ready applications from other providers.

    It actually looks slightly better than expected but still doesn’t really look GOOD. The hideous front of the new X5 is being brought to the X6, which totally destroys the design of the whole car. It looks really bulky overall and it doesn’t look fresh at all. I don’t understand why BMW share the same front design between several models (like same on all 4 series models, same on X3 and X4 and now even X5 and X6 share the same front design. What’s going on? BMW cars have all been disappointing since the 6 series, they aren’t BAD but just not something we expect from a BMW. Newer cars should look more streamlined and have good looking body lines (except american cars and now X5 and X6 look exactly like american cars, and BMW has to know other than the US, not many people prefer bulky designs) and look more futuristic. I always liked BMW because they look younger and cleaner than competitors like Audi and Merc but now seems like Audi are having better exterior design than BMW (at least they don’t use same front designs for Q5 and Q7), while Audi’s new interior look better than BMW’s interior and Merc’s recent interior designs are out of the world (C class and S class) which makes BMWs kinda look cheap. If BMW doesn’t raise its game, it would fall behind its 2 main competitors very soon as Audi is obviously catching up and does a lot better in marketing, while being a lot more innovative (BMW used to be innovative but not now). Last but not least, when a new model comes out, the old one usually looks really dated but I am sure if you ask someone who doesn’t know about cars, they might think that the old X6 is the new one and the better looking one. Who said Bangle created the worst BMW designs?  The new team doesn’t even know how to make a car that is nice to look at…

    Great looking car!!! Nice job BMW, as a side note looks like there is several miserable losers on this blog who probably drive a beat-up Honda Civic and can not afford the X6 so they would rather talk nonsense, GET OFF THIS BLOG!!!
