After the launch of the new G30 BMW 5 Series sedan late last year, BMW’s attention now focuses on the Chinese market. Just like the last generation 5 Series, the new business sedan will get a model tailored to Chinese customers. The BMW 5 Series long wheelbase was spotted in China this week, ahead of its world debut at the Shanghai Auto Show in April.

The extended wheelbase 5 Series is manufactured in China by the Brilliance-BMW joint venture. It is scheduled to only be sold in China, with no other plans for worldwide markets.

There will be three engines available: a 2.0 turbo with 224hp (525 Li), a 2.0 turbo with 252hp (530 Li), and a new 3.0 turbo six with 340hp (540 Li).

Now I’m confused. Why would the Chinese need a lwb 5 series?

Legroom, many prefer to be driven. 3er GT based on lwb Chinese 3er Sedan.

Chinese can afford to hire a driver. In the usa basically nobody can.

      • Christoph Michael says:

I guess. My 6ft tall friends fit fine in the back of my 5. And there’s already a lwb 7. Maybe it’s also the cost of a 5 to a 7…

pretty much. In Asia, (except some places such as Singapore) anyone affording such a car makes tens of time more money than poor Chinese. However, those buying a 3-5 series in North America (upper middle class and higher) make 2-3 x more than the poor class, which is 20-40K in US/Canada.

    • Bellisarius says:

Status, image, show off, all of these They do not care about the car as much as the image- its technicalities or qualities being irrelevant. Showing off is what it is about, not driving the ultimate machine, but being driven in it. You may see automotive performance in a vehicle, some people see limo and status.
