The rumored BMW 2 Series Gran Coupe is rendered once again. In 2014, BMW plans to launch a four-door coupe version of the upcoming 2 Series Coupe. The niche model aims to compete with similar offerings from Mercedes (CLA) and Audi (A3 sedan). The BMW 2 Series Gran Coupe will offer to customers the sleekness and design of a coupe with the practicality of a small sedan.

The exterior design is based on the 2 Series Coupe and Convertible models, but with a slightly longer platform to accommodate the sleek roof line and increased size. The 2 Series Gran Coupe is said to sport short overhangs at the front and rear with a coupe-like profile all around. Because of the stretch to accommodate a slightly lengthened platform, the elongated roofline is lower, more rounded.

With a smaller footprint and lower weight, the 2 Series Gran Coupe could carry under the hood a variety of different engines, from four-cylinder diesel and petrol units to equivalent six-cylinder powerplants. The car will retain the rear-wheel drivetrain while the engines will be matted to a six-speed or eight-speed automatic transmissions.

Market launch time? Either late 2014 or early 2015.

What is BMW’s recent obsession with Gran Coupes??

If they were that obsessed with market share, how about having more affordable rear-drive cars in the lower end range?

Perhaps they’re finally admitting that they screwed up the 318ti in the US marketplace back in the mid-1990s and are finally willing to give it another try? No, that can’t be it. Must be that they’re staging for the 2015 fuel efficiency standards.

Certainly going to put a giant squeeze on the Cadillac ATS. Wander what the dimensions are. I guess by doing a “grand coupe” they don’t directly compete with the 3 series but obviously those that want something a little smaller and lighter like the old E46 may lean towards the 2.

You need to understand the market needs these crossover cars, more space, 4 doors and more utility . A regular sedan cant compete with all these offerings, the market has changed and try to remember when the X5 was being built, they were saying the same thing…..
