A few days after the official launch of the BMW F87 M2 production of the sport coupes has begun at the BMW Leipzig plant.

Despite its considerably wider wheel arches, the BMW M2 can be mixed on the production line with the civilian variants of BMW 2 Series Coupe and Convertible, as well as BMW 2 Series Active Tourer and BMW 1 Series five-door model. 750 cars per day can be produced per day at the Leipzig plant, and more than 100 BMW i3 and 20 BMW i8.

Frank van Meel, head of BMW M, indicates that the extra body of the M2 and its specific components takes additional production time when compared to the standard 2 Series Coupe.

In order to prevent a delay on the production line, the processes have been adjusted to accommodate for the M2. For example, body reinforcement had to be integrated in the body shop and also some reinforcements braces had to be integrated later on.

The car will be officially unveiled in January at the auto show in Detroit and deliveries will start in April 2016.
