The new F82 BMW M4 also comes to Chicago for one of the coldest auto shows in the last decade. But after seeing what the M4 can do in snow, the weather conditions won’t influence the purchasing choice of those that live in winter climates.

The first M4 Coupe and the third generation M3 Sedan debuted earlier this month at the 2014 Detroit Auto Show.

Thanks to a lightweight design, M4 has a weight saving of around 80 kilograms over the outgoing M3. In addition to using CFRP in certain components to save weight – both M3 and M4 get a carbon roof – the suspension components have been redesigned and are made in aluminum. M engineers say the BMW M3 and M4 are 10 sec faster at Nurburgring than the outgoing E90 / E92 M3.

The new six-cylinder engine can be paired to a manual or DCT. Manual transmission is based on the BMW 1M and it’s 12 kg lighter than the gearbox found in previous E90 / E92 M3. It uses a twin blade clutch and upgraded oil system. If one orders the manual transmission instead of dual clutch gearbox, it will also save 25 kg (55 lbs). The new feature on the manual transmission, automatic rev matching, is only enabled in Sport and Comfort driving mode, but disabled in Sport+ mode.
