Video: New BMW M5 vs Mercedes-Benz CLS63 AMG

South African CAR magazine publishes a video comparison between the all-new BMW M5 and the Mercedes-Benz CLS63 AMG. The duel takes place both on the road and race track.

The CLS63 AMG is powered by a 5.5-liter twin-turbocharged V8 rated at 550 horsepower and 590 lb-ft of torque with the Performance Package.

The new 2012 M5 features under the hood a high-revving 4.4-liter (4395cc) turbocharged that uses the BMW M TwinPower Turbo technology. The engine outputs 560 horsepower from 5,750-7,000 rpm and 680Nm (502 lb-ft) of torque from only 1500rpm.

I actually know Deon Joubert – the driver in the video. He used to race for BMW in the SA touring car series a few years ago. I was fortunate enough to have done a few laps around this very circuit with him in an M3.

I was quite surprised at the Mercs lap times, very close to the M5!

Limp mode? In two laps? These turbo cars have problems with consistent max-out running.

  yeah I was also surprised. Weren’t they supposed to have been tested on the Nurbugring which is supposedly one of the longest and difficult tracks.
AMG-Power

The Cls in this vid does not have a performance package upgrade witch will increase the Hp to 550 from 518 and i think that would have made a huge difference in the lap time and the drag race even though the CLS won the drag race.
