It’s the battle of the performance coupes as BMW’s new M4 takes on the Mercedes-Benz C63 AMG. Can the M4’s turbocharged 425bhp six-cylinder petrol engine compare to the 6.2-litre V8 of the C63 AMG? Steve Sutcliffe has the keys to both, and he’s about to find out.

The F80 2015 BMW M3 Sedan will cost $62,000 while the 2015 BMW M4 has a base price of $64,200. In Germany, the base price for the M4 Convertible is 78,200 euros for the version with manual transmission, and 82,100 euros for the M4 convertible with a seven-speed DCT.

It is worth mentioning that Stucliffe is comparing the M4 with the last generation C63 AMG which has a more potent engine. The new C63 AMG will also switch to turbocharging and a smaller engine. Also, let’s not forget that the outgoing E92 M3 uses the amazing naturally aspirated V8 with a great sound track. So the new M4 has a better chassis, gearbox, economy and ride, and it’s as fast with 75hp and 44lb ft less. Yet he picks the C63 AMG thanks to its better sound and a bit better steering.

440 lbs heavier, the Merc is a pig unless you just want to drag race it or drift which is what this guy seems to like doing.

Yeah. It is soooo painful to drive an M3, that even this Steve Sutcliffe can’t wipe out the smile of his face.

The fact that he was turned off by the throttle response made me question if he knows anything about cars? Obviously turbos have lag until they can spool up. But it is kind of upsetting that bmw used a 3 litter tho instead of something bigger. But I’m sure they know way more than me and there is probably a good reason why the new m3/m4 doesn’t have more power. It’s still insanely fast! I’m wondering tho if the 6 speed manual is even worth having tho. Every one says the 7 speed dual clutch is soooooo much faster. I personally love srandards but I think I’d rather have the faster transmission.

So M looses to AMG on steering feel and engine. Sad. And whatever difference is to 60, AMG will still win on higher speeds. Need to test drive new M4 to form an opinion, but so far it seems I stay with my E92.

This confirms what I feared would happen with the new generation M–it lost 3 the 4 things I love most about my E92: Sound (the E92 is art), throttle response, and steering feel. Before I got my E92, I was torn between the old C63 and the E92, and the steering and DCT were what made me give the M the nod. Now that I’m in the market again, it looks like I’m leaning towards the C63. It’s sad that AMG has taken steering feel from the M Division, that used to be something they had the market on. It’s nice to hear that the DCT is still just as amazing. I used to be a manual only guy, but the M’s DCT is benchmark I measure every other transmission by.

@disqus_ldtyzHJlOZ:disqus , you can’t use turbo lag as an excuse for disappointing throttle response. He made it very clear that two of the things he loved most about the E92 were the sound and throttle response, and this review confirmed what everyone feared when BMW switched to a turbo set up–BMW was trading two of the best attributes of the car to meet fuel economy standards and make the eco-hippies happy.

The new car is a great car, I’m shopping it, but I’m not excited about turbo lag (however minimal it may be). In all fairness, I’m waiting shopping the new 2015 M3 against the 2015 C63, and both will be turbos, so they may have similar throttle response–we’ll have to see.
