Yesterday Mercedes-Benz unveiled their latest model, S-Class Coupe, a two-door luxurious limousine that builds atop the S-Class Coupe Concept unveiled in Frankfurt.

With the high-end coupe, Mercedes-Benz is entering a new niche market and if history is of any indication, others are not far behind. Is BMW working on a 8 Series model to take on the elegant S-Class Coupe? Could it be based on the Gran Lusso Concept unveiled last year?

13 inches longer than a BMW 6 Series Coupe and based on the new S-Class sedan, the S-Class Coupe will appeal to a fine group of customers, with exclusivity and comfort at the highest levels.

Based on the 7 Series platform, BMW Pininfarina Gran Lusso Coupe was one of the stars at the 2013 Concorso d’Eleganza Villa d’Este, an event that celebrates some of the most exclusive automobiles in the world. The elegant design lines are the result of a collaboration between BMW and Pininfarina. The knife sharpened LED lights at the front and rear end showcase the sporty side of the car, while the specially designed kidneys are in the typical BMW design with Pininfarina accents.

A BMW competitor to the S-Class Coupe won’t arrive before 2016 when the G11 7 Series hits the market.

We put together a photo comparison to see how the two vehicles would compete against each other:
