Who says BMW SAVs are relegated to strictly street duty? The BMW X3CC competes in the most grueling rallies on earth including the famed Paris-Dakar rally.
The race originated in 1978, a year after racer Thierry Sabine got lost in the desert and decided that it would be a good location for a regular rally. Originally, the rally was from Paris, France, to Dakar, Senegal, interrupted by a transfer across the Mediterranean. However, due to politics and other factors, the course, including origin and destination, has varied over the years.
Dozens of teams and manufacturers enter the rally using cars, trucks, and motorcycles, hoping to use the rally as a test bed for developing better vehicles. As a matter of fact, BMW Motorrad won the motorcycle class in 1999 and 2000. BMW’s MINI won this year using the Mini Countryman All4.
Today’s BMW X3CC Super Bild is from the 2010 Paris-Dakar rally. The X-Raid team included nine-time former winner Stéphane Peterhansel (six times on a bike and three in a car) and co-driver Jean-Paul Cottret, Catalunyan Joan “Nani” Roma and his triple Dakar winning co-driver Michel Périn. Though the team finished 4th overall, it goes to show you that the X3 is no slouch when it comes to taking the punishment dished out by the most grueling race on the planet!
