Our friends over at TheDieselDriver have recently published their review of the first BMW production ready hybrid: BMW X6 ActiveHybrid.

Here is an excerpt from their review:

“One of the most remarkable things about the new BMW ActiveHybrid X6, besides its performance (0-60 in 5.4 seconds) and fuel economy (20% better than the standard X6), is that the driver might never know he’s behind the wheel of a hybrid if it weren’t for the discreet ActiveHybrid badges and an electric drive display below the tachometer.

Indeed, the BMW ActiveHybrid X6 handles more like the X6 M than the standard X6, not to mention the run-of-the-mill hybrid. This X6 may well be the most powerful hybrid in the world and yet the engine still shuts down at stops. It is clearly no sluggish Toyota Prius but, weighing in at 5,765 pounds (some 496 more than the non-hybrid), it doesn’t promise the fuel economy of a Prius either.

We drove the ActiveHybrid X6 in a variety of conditions, from windy roads to city streets and it was easy to forget about the complex hybrid systems that contribute to its efficiency. In fact, the transition between its gasoline and electric powerplants was seamless.

The new electric power steering was impressive: it provides exactly the type of feedback you would expect in a BMW (and not the disconnected feeling you get from most other hybrids). Acceleration was equally impressive: the ActiveHybrid feels quicker than the standard X6 and this, in fact, is the car’s Achilles heel. While most hybrid owners apply a fairly soft touch to the accelerator pedal, this car practically demands a lead foot.”

In less than two weeks, BMW will unveil their X6 with Performance Parts at the Geneva Motor Show. Featuring similar upgrades as seen in some of the 1 or 3 Series models, the Performance Parts are not only looking to extend the already aggressive look of the Sports Activity Coupe, but to also to increase the power output.

You can read about all the upgrades brought to the X6, in the press release below.

The BMW X6 stands out in particular through its unique sporting looks and performance, unmistakable design adding a most exclusive touch. And now the truly discerning driver is able to make the driving experience and looks of the world’s first Sports Activity Coupé even more outstanding, tailoring all the car’s features to his individual, sporting preferences.

The wide range of products from BMW Performance offers numerous options for this purpose, ensuring an even more intense experience of driving dynamics and the fascinating, aesthetic design of the BMW X6. The range of retrofittable options specially developed for BMW’s unique Sports Activity Coupé for the drivetrain, suspension, aerodynamics and cockpit is included in the broad selection of BMW Original Accessories.

BMW Performance components convey know-how from motorsport to the road, expressing a particular passion for supreme performance and characteristic design. All features in the BMW Performance product line are available individually, enabling the driver of a BMW X6, through the choice of selected components, to set clear sporting highlights in all areas he finds particularly relevant. At the same time all BMW Performance products may be combined with one another to provide a harmoniously balanced overall package.

Aerodynamics and the suspension: precise optimisation, individual style.

The sporting looks of the BMW X6 are accentuated more than ever before by the BMW Performance Aerodynamics Kit with features and elements tailored exactly in both style and function to BMW’s Sports Activity Coupé. This even includes the cameras and sensors for the Park Distance Control, Active Cruise Control with Stop & Go, and the Side View driver assistance system.

The BMW Performance Aerodynamics Kit is made up of the front bumper, side-sills and an insert for the rear bumper, all in special design and all finished in body colour. The BMW Performance Aerodynamics Kit for the BMW X6 may also
be supplemented by a rear spoiler, rear fins in matt black and a front grid finished in high-gloss black paint.

BMW Performance light-alloy wheels in Y-spoke design further optimise the dynamic driving potential and the striking looks of the BMW X6. Reduced in weight, these cast light-alloy 12-inch wheels stand out in particular through their roll-milled rim hump and exclusive twin-tone finish with a glossy outside surface and Ferric Grey paintwork between the rims. A special production method reduces the weight of each wheel by approximately 1,500 grams
compared with conventional wheels of the same size. The reduction in unsprung masses ensured in this way has a positive effect on both the driving dynamics and steering behaviour of the BMW X6.

The BMW Performance light-alloy wheels come on tyres varying in size from front to rear and featuring runflat qualities allowing the driver to continue even after a complete loss of pressure. Rim dimensions are 10J x 21 at the front on 285/35 R21 tyres and 11.5J x 21 on 325/30 R21 tyres at the rear.

BMW Performance Power Kit: even more muscle when accelerating.

The BMW Performance Power Kit available as a retrofittbale option on the gasoline versions of the BMW X6 as of June 2010 increases both torque and acceleration to an even higher standard. Developed specifically for the V8 power unit in the BMW X6 xDrive50i and the straight-six in the BMW X6 xDrive35i, the Performance Power Kit significantly improves both acceleration and elasticity through a further increase in maximum output and peak torque precisely matched to the car’s power characteristics.

The BMW Performance Power Kit comprises appropriate modifications to engine management with a positive effect on the development of power in both engines. The Kit was developed by BMW’s engine specialists and naturally reflects the high quality standards of the BMW Group with the increase in power and torque remaining in full compliance with all warranty rights and claims on the part of the customer.

The BMW Performance Power Kit raises maximum output of the eight-cylinder with BMW TwinPower Turbo and High Precision Injection in the BMW X6 xDrive50i by 30 kW/41 hp to 330 kW/448 hp. Peak torque, in turn, is up by 50 Newton-metres/37 lb-ft to 650 Nm/479 lb-ft. The six-cylinder power unit of the BMW X6 xDrive35i equipped with
Twin Turbo technology and High Precision Injection shows an increase in maximum output by 15 kW/20 hp to 240 kW/326 hp, with peak torque increasing by 50 to 450 Newton-metres/332 lb-ft.

Benefiting from the BMW Performance Power Kit, both models accelerate 0.2 seconds faster from a standstill to 100 km/h, the BMW X6 xDrive50i with the BMW Performance Power Kit completing this sprint in 5.2 seconds, the BMW X6 xDrive35i in 6.5 seconds. Acceleration in gears from 80 – 120 km/h (50 – 75 mph) is 0.5 seconds faster in each model.

Likewise starting in June 2010, BMW Performance also offers a sports exhaust system. Available also on the BMW X6 xDrive50i and BMW X6 xDrive35i, this option stands out clearly through its chrome-plated tailpipes, at the same time offering even lower weight and a particularly striking sound pattern together with a further reduction of exhaust counter-pressure.

Cockpit: driver’s workplace like in a sports car.

BMW Performance offers attractive accessories also for the car’s interior design, again raising the sporting driving experience in the BMW X6 to an even higher standard. As an example, all model variants of BMW’s Sports Activity Coupé may be equipped with a BMW Performance sports steering wheel with a flattened rim at the bottom and alcantara coating for optimum grip and a pleasant touch in all temperatures.

The driver’s workplace is further optimised in the true style of a genuine sports car by BMW Performance aluminium pedals and the BMW Performance driver’s footrest. In their technical features and design all of the BMW Performance
components available in the BMW X6 comply in full with the typical style of the brand and naturally fulfil all of BMW’s supreme standards in terms of quality and safety.

Accordingly, they are fully in line with all BMW warranty standards and requirements. BMW Performance accessories and features are sold and fitted by BMW Dealers and Service Partner as well as BMW Retail Outlets.

The fellows over at Autogespot have spotted the gorgeous Lumma CLR X650 somewhere on the streets of Paris. While most of the models we have seen so far from Lumma were sporting a white or black coat, this latest CLR X650 comes in an eye-popping red color.

Back in 2008, the Winterlinger-based tuner, Lumma Design, unveiled for the first time their own version of the BMW X6 Sports Activity Coupe. The CLR X650 comes with some impressive 23-inch wheels, mounted on a sport widebody kit that also includes 2 inch fender extensions.

The front and rear spoilers received a new treatment as well, along with larger side skirts. Of course, carbon-fiber is being used all around, including the air ducted hood. Lowered sport suspensions designed by Lumma are completing the aggressive look and stand.

The interior design has not been neglected and CLR X650 received a sporty treatment that includes leather and alcantara trim, along with sport seats and aluminum pedals.

Lumma decided to go even further and worked their magic on the V8 Twin-Turbo as well by reprogramming the ECU and replacing the exhaust with a stainless sport system.

We’re not usually fans of any “flashy bimmers”, but we have to say that this one has impressed us.

Weeks after we posted exclusive information on the new BMW X6 xDrive40d model, BMW has officially confirmed the new model ...

Weeks after we posted exclusive information on the new BMW X6 xDrive40d model, BMW has officially confirmed the new model available in Europe starting this Spring. Along with the new 40d badge, the X6 family gets the new N55 Twin-Scroll engine that debuted in the 535i GT and more recently, in the new 5 Series and facelifted 3er Coupe and Convertible.

Also, starting in spring 2010, all versions of the BMW X6 come as standard with eight-speed automatic transmission.

This press release issued by BMW last week comes to confirm our previous assumptions.

BMW X6 with even more efficient six-cylinder power units.

As of spring 2010, the BMW X6 stands out more than ever before not only through its fascinating design and unique rendition of driving pleasure so typical of the brand, but also with a level of efficiency quite unparalleled in its segment. A new generation of straight-six diesels featured in the BMW X6 xDrive40d and the BMW X6 xDrive30d, as well as the first straight-six petrol engines with

BMW TwinPower Turbo, High Precision Injection and VALVETRONIC in the BMW X6 xDrive35i, following the BMW EfficientDynamics development strategy, give also these models an even better balance of performance and fuel economy.

The newly developed 3.0-litre diesel engines now featuring an all-aluminium crankcase raise engine output by 7 kW to 180 kW/245 hp in the BMW X6 xDrive30d and, respectively, 15 kW to 225 kW/306 hp in the BMW X6 xDrive40d – together with a reduction in average fuel consumption in each case by approximately 10 per cent versus the former models. Both power units come with common-rail direct injection with piezo-injectors operating in the new top-end diesel version of BMW’s Sports Activity Coupé at maximum pressure of 2,000 bar and in the second diesel at a pressure of up to 1,800 bar.

The power unit featured in the BMW X6 xDrive40d comes with BMW TwinPower Turbo Technology following the Variable Twin Turbo principle where the small turbocharger cuts in just above idle speed and the larger turbocharger is activated under higher load. This superior power unit delivers its maximum torque of 600 Newton-metres/442 lb-ft between 1,500 and 2,500 rpm and reaches its peak output at 4,400 rpm. Extra power of this kind accelerates the BMW X6 xDrive40d to 100 km/h in 6.5 seconds and the higher level of efficiency is reflected by average fuel consumption of just 7.5 litres/100 kilometres (equal to 37.7 mpg imp) in the EU test cycle.

The BMW X6 xDrive30d stands out in particular through its truly impressive torque and traction. The engine comes with a turbocharger featuring variable turbine geometry and reaches its maximum output at just 4,000 rpm, with peak torque of no less than 540 Newton-metres/398 lb-ft maintained all the way between 1,750 and 3,000 rpm. This kind of power accelerate the BMW X6 xDrive30d from a standstill to 100 km/h in 7.5 seconds, with average fuel consumption in the EU test cycle of just 7.4 litres/100 kilometres, equal to 38.2 mpg imp.

Offering average fuel consumption down by 7 per cent versus its predecessor, together with supreme power remaining at 225 kW/306 hp, the new straight-six petrol engine in the BMW X6 xDrive35i bears clear testimony to all the benefits of BMW EfficientDynamics. Maximum torque of 400 Newton-metres/295 lb-ft comes all the way from 1,200 to 5,000 rpm, accelerating the new BMW X6 xDrive35i from a standstill to 100 km/h in just 6.7 seconds, with average fuel consumption in the EU test cycle of 10.3 litres/100 kilometres, equal to 27.4 mpg imp.

Again starting in spring 2010, all versions of the BMW X6 come as standard with eight-speed automatic transmission highlighting the sporting character of BMW’s Sports Activity Coupé through its dynamic gearshift and making a significant contribution to the car’s all-round economy through its optimised efficiency.

At the same time the wide range of standard features is further enhanced by speed-related Servotronic steering assistance. The range of driver assistance systems from BMW ConnectedDrive available as an option on the BMW X6 is being supplemented by Active Cruise Control with Stop & Go, Lane Departure Warning, as well as the Side View and Speed Limit Info systems.

This is Jeremy Clarkson’s bashing week on BMW cars and following his “great” X5 M review, we have another one for you, or should we say, he does?! This time, another somewhat controversial vehicle back in the day, the BMW X6, the Sports Activity Coupe, and not SAV as he calls it. And not just any X6, but rather one of our favorite ones: xDrive35d.

As seen in the previous review, the iDrive system takes a beating and to be objective, we have to agree with him. The first generation iDrive “suffers” a bit when compared to the latest nav system. Moving down his complaints list, we have the shift paddles….and again, he has a point here. We have to admit that the old school paddles seen in the M3 are far more intuitive and appropriate: one shifts down, the other shifts up.

Next item…the suspension system. Not sure about you, but we certainly like its roughness and firmness, inspires more confidence and certainly handles better in corners without having the “boat effect”.

But seriously….complaining about the amazing 3.0 liter twin-turbo diesel?

WOW!

One of the best diesel engines in the BMW line-up and not only, and one we’ve been craving to see it in more U.S. spec models.

The next item on list just simply made us smile. Expecting the X6 SAC to act as a 4×4 and crawl over boulders, is just something we didn’t think we would hear. The X6 is a sport oriented vehicle craving for performance, and yes, it does give you some off-roading capabilities, but not even close to a Jeep or Range Rover. It’s like comparing apples and oranges.

Now, the next scene shows the X6 35d struggling to climb a hill…okay, we got the point, but easily we forget the car comes equipped with summer/performance tires that won’t do well on snow nor grass. Any xDrive system coupled with good winter or all-season tires will get the job done.

And really? Summer tires in snow, in the highest ski resort in the Alps? Well, we made that mistake ones with an E46 and we certainly won’t do it again.

As a final thought, the first BMW X6 launched prior to the recession, despite his statement.

It’s all fun though and we know what TopGear stands for these day and that’s perfectly fine, still enjoy watching the show.

Road and Track just published their own test drive of the 2010 BMW X6 ActiveHybrid, a model that was recently unveiled at the L.A. Auto Show where our own Josh had a chance to drive it as well (the review will be coming up).

In the mean time, let’s have a look at R&T’s first impressions of BMW’s first production ready hybrid.

“During our quick drive, we achieved a consistent maximum speed of 34 mph with a fully charged battery on flat asphalt, but a light foot is needed to keep the car in electric mode. In normal driving, the electric motor will kick in when your foot is to the floor to provide additional boost.

During full electric running, we achieved stints of about a mile in light city traffic before the gas engine would activate. Regardless of engine load or speed, the transition from electric to gas was seamless. The 312-volt nickel-metal hydride battery pack is liquid cooled and at full throttle can deliver 57 kilowatts to the motors. The battery’s cooling system dumps heat into either the air conditioning system (the a/c system can energize on its own) or the power steering cooling loop.

Like other electrically motivated vehicles, the ActiveHybrid charges the battery pack primarily during braking. The brake-by-wire system blends regenerative and hydraulic braking systems excellently, but pedal feel is spongy and vague. There was an almost imperceptible “clunk” sound at very low speeds that lets you know the transmission is shifting modes. When in either Sport or Manual mode, the engine will not auto-stop and will instead charge the batteries at idle.

BMW claims that the ActiveHybrid is 20 percent more efficient than the gas version, with a similar emissions reduction to boot. We achieved 19.6 mpg (versus 14 mpg) during our mixed-mode drive. And while some may criticize the X6’s overall concept, it’s hard to fault its seamless hybrid system.”

John Voelcker over at GreenCarReports had the opportunity to sat behind the wheel of the all-brand new 2010 BMW ActiveHbyrid X6. Here is an excerpt from his detailed and informative review:

“Our goal was to fundamentally change the view of hybrids,” said Peter Tünnermann, project manager for the 2010 BMW ActiveHybrid X6. “We wanted to make a ‘non-hybrid’ hybrid.”

In other words, a hybrid that didn’t drive like a hybrid. And in that goal, BMW has succeeded admirably.

Drivers at the international launch of BMW’s first hybrid-electric vehicle agreed that if the badges and instruments had been removed, they would have been hard-pressed to know that this latest X6 had electric motors and all sorts of software wizardry between its engine and the wheels.

Their only clue, in fact, would have been the fuel economy. No other X6 even comes close to achieving 20 miles per gallon in mixed use.

But what about performance?

It works. Under light, moderate, and full acceleration, the ActiveHybrid system’s up- and down-shifts felt just like a standard automatic transmission. Engine speed was directly proportional to road speed in each “gear,” rising and falling with throttle input.

Acceleration from 0 to 62 miles per hour is 5.6 seconds, equivalent to the xDrive 50i.

But the ActiveHybrid X6’s liquid-cooled, 2.4-kilowatt-hour battery pack can also propel the car in electric-only mode up to 37 miles per hour and, under specific circumstances, for up to 1.6 miles.

The french fellows over at Sport-Cars.fr have just sent in their review of the beautiful, powerful and imposing AC Schnitzer X6 Falcon, a vehicle based on the BMW X6 xDrive35d model.

AC Schnitzer gives the X6 a power upgrade from 286 horsepower to 310 and 680Nm of torque. The dimensions of the X6 have also been increased, 70 mm wider at the front axle and 80 mm wider at the rear. AC Schnitzer X6 Falcon sits on ultra-thin 22″ tires.

The aerodynamics package includes a front skirt with diagonal air inlets and repositioned fog lamps. The Falcon rear features a solid skirt with edge frame. In contrast to the original, all components are painted in the body color, so that it appears drawn further down and hence more dominant. AC Schnitzer has opted for a rear diffuser and completed the effect with a new rear spoiler.

The article is in French and we missed those classes in college, but Google Translate will help quite a bit. Let’s take a look at the review by Sports-Cars.fr

AC Schnitzer and Hartge are two of the most famous car tuners and they need no introduction. Over the years, each one of these companies focused part of their efforts on the BMW brand and several “tuned-up” bimmers were released by the two of them.

Hartge was the first one to open doors with their own version of the BMW X6 xDrive35d. First changes were made to the powerplant, the twin-turbo 3.0 liter diesel engine received an upgrade to 328 horsepower and 675 Nm of torque. To handle all that weight and power, Hartge X6 xDrive35d was placed on ultra-wide tires, 295 / 30 ZR 22 at the front and 335 / 25 ZR 22 at the rear.

Suspensions have been lowered as well by 30 mm. The Hartge X6 runs from 0-62 mph in 6.8 seconds and has a top speed of 159 mph.

The competitor, AC Schnitzer has also worked hard on their own version of the X6 xDrive 35d. The engine power has been upgraded to 310 horsepower and 680Nm of torque. The dimensions of the X6 have been increased, 70 mm wider at the front axle and 80 mm wider at the rear.

AC Schnitzer X6 xDrive35d sits on ultra-thin 23″ tires. Despite having 15 hp less, the lighter AC Schnitzer X6 runs from 0 to 62 mph in 6.3 seconds.

German magazine Autobild decided to put the two “monsters” side-by-side and see if a clear winner will emerge. Fuel consumption numbers were also taken into consideration. The white X6 by AC Schnitzer showed an average of 20.6 mpg, while the Hartge X6 recorded an average of 22.4

High cornering speeds are attainable with these cars. The AC Schnitzer is more stable and the suspension allows for less body roll.

Both brands have equipped the X6 model with expensive body kits and overall like or dislike feeling is just a matter of personal preference.

In conclusion, there is no clear winner here, both cars come very close to each other in both performance and design, but since a winner still needs to exist, Autobild favors the AC Schnitzer….

Already for the eights time, HAMANN-Motorsport presents its exclusive refining program at the Frankfurt Motor Show.

In hall 5.0, exhibition stand B.32, the renowned BMW specialist and tuner of the most excellent luxury sports cars presents it latest developments. One of the displayed highlights of the 450 square meter large HAMANN stand is the world premiere of the TYCOON EVO which is based on the BMW X6.

The revolutionary difference to its predecessor is the newly designed fender extensions and the striking rear. The visual and sonorous highlights of the rear part are the earthy sports exhaust system with the remarkable center double end pipes.

The TYCOON EVO- an auto-body pack which sets benchmarks

Already the design department at HAMANN-Motorsport ensures that the TYCOON EVO meets the expectations in his name. They designed and developed an impressive broad makeover for this BMW crossover model and ensured that all accessories reflect and perfect the shape of the car. The masculine appearance of the TYCOON EVO is mainly emphasized by its new front wings and back wing extensions made of light composite material. They broaden the body by striking 60 millimeters. The perfectly designed side skirts render the optical connection while the front apron is an outstanding eye-catcher with its large air inlets and the LED daytime running lights under the serial headlights. At the rear of the X6, HAMANN engineers replaced the original skirt with an own development. This makes place for the sporty and earthy exhaust system with the center double end pipes. The back appearance of the TYCOON EVO is enhanced by a rear- and roof spoiler. It goes without saying that all used HAMANN-components do not only convince with their design but also with their aerodynamics. They ensure an optimised air flow over the car silhouette and render an additional downthrust.

Perfectly styled from head to toe – the suitable rim in XXL format

The suitable rim for the broad makeover of the BMW X6 is the DESIGN EDITION RACE ANODIZED. The ultra-light forged wheel combines both agility and also elegance. The black rim star and the titanium bolting underline the dynamics of the wheel. The highly polished rim flange on the contrary gives the car a noble impression. HAMANN offers the 23-inch wheel with tires sized 315/25 R 23. Special chassis springs fantastically enhance the light alloy wheels. Thereby, progressively coiled springs lower the barycentre of this Sports Utility Vehicle by maximally 40 millimeters at the front- and back axle.

HAMANN performance kits – from tycoon to typhoon

The choice of different HAMANN performance kits is as manifold as the selection of BMW engines. The tuning expert bestows the X6 xDrive35i with an engine output of 360 hp / 265 kW at 5230 rpm. Parallelly, the maximum torque rises by 140 Nm to 540 Nm in the rpm-range between 1300 and 5000. At the same time, HAMANN also suspends the speed limit of 250 km/h and allows impressive 275 km/h.

The Diesel series also profits from extra power. After the serial motronic is re-programmed, the xDrive30d has 265 PS / 195 kW and transfers a maximum torque of 600 Nm to the crankshaft. The engine variation xDrive35d also turns into a racy sprinter: HAMANN is able to tease 320 PS / 235 KW and a sensational torque of 660 Nm at 2000 rpm out of the Diesel car.

The maximum performance enhancement HAMANN offers is for the eight-cylinder model xDrive50i. By using a new motor electronics map and by applying metal catalysts and the matching sport exhaust system, the engine output increase to 501 hp / 368 kW at 5,600 r.p.m. (serial version: 407 hp / 300 kW at 5,500 r.p.m.). The maximum torque rises to enormous 700 Nm at 3,700 r.p.m (serial version: 600 Nm at 1,750 r.p.m.). Also the maximum speed rises significantly and only misses the 300 km/h notch by a whisker.

The inner values of HAMANN – noble accessories for the TYCOON EVO interior

In addition to the present, serial inner design, HAMANN offers accessories made of high-quality aluminium. Pedals and foot rests render motorsports sensations and perfectly match the 12-part HAMANN decoration set made of carbon fibre. An instrument dial with a scaling up to 300 km/h and a 3-spoke sport steering wheel further underline the sportive overall appearance of the TYCOON EVO. For the boot of the X6, HAMANN offers an elegant and also practical boot mat with chequered decorative stitching and an embroidered logo.

AutoWeek reports that BMW is aiming to sell 1,000 of its new 7 and X6 hybrids in their first year ...

AutoWeek reports that BMW is aiming to sell 1,000 of its new 7 and X6 hybrids in their first year in the United States.

Both hybrid were revealed last month and are heading for Frankfurt Motor Show.

BMW ActiveHybrid X6 features a two-mode hybrid system which allows the X6 to run either on its electric motors alone at low speeds, internal combustion or a combination of both. Compared to the 7 Hybrid, the X6 makes use of not one, but two electric motors which deliver 91 hp and 86 hp, respectively, with peak torque values of 192 lb-ft and 206 lb-ft. Top speed in the electric mode is 37 mph, maximum range is 1.6 miles. The maximum output is 480 horsepower and 575 lb-ft of torque, enough to be crowned as the most powerful hybrid vehicle ever offered for sale.

The ActiveHybrid 7 uses a different electric drive setup from the X6 Hybrid and it’s being considered a mild hybrid. The upgraded V8 twin-turbo with High Precision Direct Injection runs together, at the same time, with a 3-phase synchronous electric motor which is positioned between the engine and the torque converter. The electric motor generates approximately 20 hp and peak torque of 155 lb-ft.

The “pumped up” V8 twin-turbo engine produces 40 horsepower more than the engine found in the 750i/Li models to a total of 400 horsepower. The overall combined output is being advertised at 455 horsepower and 516 lb-ft of torque.

The X6 hybrid comes to the U.S. market in December, followed by the 7-series in April 2010.

BMW’s plans are certainly ambitious, but the base price of these two hybrids will play a large role in the final sales numbers.

On another note, Jim O’Donnell, CEO of BMW North America, confirmed the rumors we have heard recently: more diesel could be added to U.S. lineup, including the new 5 Series and X models.

With the X6 ActiveHybrid unveiling out of the way, BMW continues road testing for their first hybrid models and two new test mules were spotted in Munich and near Spartanburg plant in South Carolina.

The ActiveHybrid X6 runs from 0 to 60 mph in only 5.4 seconds and still increases efficiency by 20%. The X6 Hybrid uses a 7-Speed automatic transmission.

Top speed of X6 Hybrid is electronically limited to 130 mph.

The high-voltage, nickel-metal hydrid technology (NiMH) battery pack featured in the BMW ActiveHybrid X6 has a total capacity of 2.4 kWh, with 1.4 kWh available nominally. Maximum output is 57 kW, with the battery’s control unit constantly determining the output level currently available as well as the charge status of the battery.

BMW ActiveHybrid X6 will be unveiled at the Frankfurt Motor Show.

For months, we were lead to believe that the hybrid technology used in the BMW ActiveHybrid 7 and X6 Hybrid are identical. To our surprise, based on the press releases issued yesterday, we learned that the two bimmer hybrids are actually using different technologies.

BMW ActiveHybrid 7

The ActiveHybrid 7 uses a different electric drive setup from the X6 Hybrid and it’s being considered a mild hybrid. The system was developed in collaboration with Mercedes Benz.

The BMW ActiveHybrid 7 accelerates to 60 mph in 4.8 seconds (preliminary), while delivering fuel economy approximately 15% better than the 750i.

Top speed of BMW ActiveHybrid 7 is electronically limited to 150 mph.

BMW ActiveHybrid X6

BMW ActiveHybrid X6 features a two-mode hybrid system which allows the X6 to run either on its electric motors alone at low speeds, internal combustion or a combination of both.
The maximum output is 480 horsepower and 575 lb-ft of torque, enough to be crowned as the most powerful hybrid vehicle ever offered for sale. The ActiveHybrid X6 runs from 0 to 60 mph in only 5.4 seconds and still increases efficiency by 20%.

Top speed of X6 Hybrid is electronically limited to 130 mph.

Another difference between these two hybrids lies in the batteries used to accomplish the tasks. The ActiveHybrid 7 uses a lithium-ion battery pack supplying 120 volts. A nickel-metal hydrid technology (NiMH) battery pack is featured in the BMW ActiveHybrid X6 with a total capacity of 2.4 kWh. Liquid cooling is used for even greater performance on the NiMH battery.

The 7 Series Hybrid has the drive power transmitted via an 8-Speed automatic transmission, while the X6 Hybrid uses a 7-Speed automatic transmission.

Several key differences between the two cars and it will be interesting to see which one of the two hybrids will the BMW fans prefer.

BMW North America has just published the press release on the 2010 BMW ActiveHybrid X6. Along with the very detailed information on the first ActiveHybrid vehicle, plenty of photos have been uploaded as well.

The embargo was broken last night by an UK magazine and several publications posted some low-resolution photos. We decided to hold off and give you the high-quality photos and all the information regarding the X6 Hybrid.

Check out next article for the 7 Series Hybrid information as well.

Press Release BMW X6 ActiveHybrid

BMW announced today the production version of the BMW ActiveHybrid X6. The BMW ActiveHybrid X6 will make its world premiere at the Frankfurt Motor Show (IAA) in September and will reach US BMW Centers in fourth-quarter 2009. ActiveHybrid technology provides a glimpse into the future, achieving outstanding driving dynamics with equally impressive efficiency. It melds both of these qualities to offer a truly unique driving experience. The world’s first Sports Activity Coupe with full hybrid drive capitalizes on the options offered by combining the combustion engine with electric motors to create a powertrain with new levels dynamic performance and efficiency.

BMW ActiveHybrid technology offers a significant increase in driving dynamics and at the same time reduces fuel consumption by approximately 20 percent versus a comparable vehicle powered by a combustion engine alone. The result is even greater driving pleasure combined with enhanced fuel economy and CO2 management providing the kind of progress to make the BMW ActiveHybrid X6 a genuine BMW in the hybrid market.

The overall drive system featured in the BMW ActiveHybrid X6 consists of a 400 hp twin-turbocharged V8 gasoline engine and two electric synchronous motors delivering 91 hp and 86 hp, respectively. Maximum system output is 480 hp, and peak torque reaches 575 lb-ft.

Precisely controlled interaction of the three power units optimizes the overall efficiency of the BMW ActiveHybrid X6 at all speeds, with acceleration from a standstill to 60 mph in 5.4 seconds. Top speed of the BMW ActiveHybrid X6 is limited electronically to 130 mph, with average fuel consumption in the EU test cycle improved by roughly 20%, and a CO2 emission rating of 231 grams per kilometer. EPA ratings will be available closer to the market introduction.

BMW’s first full hybrid model is able to run exclusively on electric power – and that is entirely free of CO2 – up to a speed of 37 mph (60 km/h), with the combustion engine being activated automatically whenever required.

These performance figures are made possible by utilizing a two-mode active transmission. The ideal combination of the two power modes can be controlled for enhanced efficiency and dynamic performance in any driving condition. With the two electric motors, three planetary gearsets and four multi-plate clutches, drive power is transmitted through a 7-speed automatic transmission. As would be expected in a BMW, the driver can operate the transmission manually. BMW’s lauded xDrive all-wheel-drive system distributes the power between the front and rear axles.

The electric motors receive their energy from an NiMH high-performance battery pack positioned beneath the floor of the luggage compartment. This battery pack also feeds electric power to the vehicle’s on-board network. Luggage compartment capacity is therefore the same as on the original BMW X6. On brake application and/or on deceleration, kinetic energy is converted into electrical energy and is stored in the battery pack. To provide this function either one or both of the electric motors act as a generator, feeding electric power generated back into the high-voltage battery.

Unique efficiency ensured by two-mode active transmission.
BMW ActiveHybrid technology has been developed specifically for use in a particularly dynamic vehicle and for a broad range of practical use. The big advantage, therefore, is optimization of drivetrain efficiency in all speed ranges and conditions.

The two-mode active transmission is based on an ECVT (electric continuously variable transmission) operating in two separate modes. One mode is for stop-and-go driving and low speeds, and the second is for driving at higher speeds.

From a stop and at low speeds, only one of the two electric motors is activated. As soon as the driver requires more power or increased speed, the second electric motor automatically starts the combustion engine. The second electric motor then serves as a generator to provide a supply of electric power to the vehicle systems. When driving steadily at a higher speed most of the power required is delivered by the combustion engine in a largely mechanical process. Here again, one of the two electric motors acts as a generator.

The mechanical components, including three planetary gearsets and the two electric motors, combine to provide for seven total effective gears. This configuration manages the power generated by the combustion engine and two electric motors in a way that maximizes driving versatility.

Twin-turbocharged V8 gasoline engine with High Precision Direct Injection.
The combustion engine is the innovative reverse-flow V8 first featured in the BMW X6 xDrive50i. The world’s first V8 gasoline engine with two turbochargers in the V-section between the two rows of cylinders develops power throughout the entire engine speed range. The spontaneous and direct response of this engine results from its compact configuration, which allows the shortest exhaust manifolds.

Displacing 4.4 liters, this outstanding engine delivers its maximum output of 400 hp between 5,500 and 6,400 rpm. Peak torque of 450 lb-ft is maintained from 1,750 to 4,500 rpm, with High Precision Direct Injection ensuring precise supply of fuel at all times. Piezo-injectors positioned in the combustion chambers between the valves ensure a smooth, efficient and clean combustion process. The engine fulfils the European EU5 standard as well as the ULEV II standards in the US.

Compared with the engine featured in the BMW X6 xDrive50i, this version has been modified in numerous respects to the specific requirements of the BMW ActiveHybrid X6. There is no starter, alternator, or belt drive for the air-conditioning compressor and hydraulic pump. The dual-circuit cooling system has been modified for all-electric operation.

Electric motors for enhanced performance on no extra fuel.
When accelerating, the V8 engine of the BMW ActiveHybrid X6 joins forces with the electric motors to ensure optimum efficiency and dynamic performance. When the driver requires more power, the two electric motors supply additional torque for enhanced performance. This boost effect significantly increases the overall output of the vehicle, without increasing fuel consumption.

While the two electric motors have almost the same output, they have been modified in their performance characteristics to meet specific requirements. The power delivered is 91 hp and 86 hp, respectively, with peak torque values of 192 lb-ft and 206 lb-ft.

The electric motors support the combustion engine effectively throughout the entire speed range. The additional electrically-generated drive power reduces the power output required of the combustion engine when driving at steady highway speeds. Load shifts are managed to give the overall system enhanced efficiency under the full spectrum of driving conditions. During kick-down and maximum acceleration shifts, the electric motors help provide an additional boost of power.

Maximum system output is 480 hp, with peak torque of 575 lb-ft. This makes the BMW ActiveHybrid X6 the most powerful hybrid vehicle in the world, with acceleration from a standstill to 60 mph in just 5.4 seconds and top speed is limited electronically to 130 mph.

All-electrical driving mode reducing emissions to zero.
With its combination of two-mode active transmission and high-performance battery pack, the BMW ActiveHybrid X6 is able to run on its electric motors alone at low speeds. This makes it a zero-emission vehicle under such conditions.

The BMW ActiveHybrid X6 may run on electric power alone regardless of the ambient temperature, as long as minimum operating temperatures are reached for the engine coolant, transmission fluid and high-voltage battery. Top speed in the electric mode is 37 mph, maximum range is 1.6 miles.

While driving electrically, the BMW ActiveHybrid X6 retains all its safety and comfort functions. The brakes remain fully operative thanks to electric vacuum supply, and don’t require the combustion engine to develop their full effect. The same applies to the Electronic Power Steering, with steering assistance being generated on demand by an electric motor.

Even the air conditioning remains fully available without any restrictions, running efficiently on an electrically operated air-conditioning compressor. Since the battery pack supplies the electric power to the 12-volt on-board network through a voltage converter, all other systems such as the lights, infotainment, and safety systems remain fully functional.

Energy Regeneration:
Electric power generated without additional fuel consumption.
The BMW ActiveHybrid X6 features an enhanced version of Brake Energy Regeneration already used in some current BMW models running on a combustion engine alone. In this case the electric motors act as generators when coasting or applying the brakes in order to feed electric power into the battery pack.

This process recaptures energy which would otherwise be lost in conventional vehicles in the form of heat escaping through the brakes. Depending on road speed, one or both of the electric motors may perform the regeneration function.

The power delivered by the generator is approximately 50 kW, about 25 times as much as the power provided by BMW’s original Brake Energy Regeneration.

Generator delivering electrical braking force.
In the generator mode, the two electric motors recapture much of the energy that must be dissipated to slow the vehicle. The stopping force generated in this way is up to 0.3 G, significantly reducing the demands on the mechanical brake system.

Sensotronic Brake Actuation (SBA) in the BMW Active Hybrid X6 may be used at any time without a direct mechanical connection between the brake pedal and the hydraulic circuit. Pedal movement is recorded by sensors and split by a control unit into brake power generated by regeneration and conventional hydraulic braking. At the same time an integrated pedal force simulator generates the usual brake feeling for the driver as an additional factor in this brake-by-wire solution.

The active brake servo builds up brake pressure with electrical control according to the signals emitted by the control unit. To ensure brake power assistance also in the all-electric mode, the BMW ActiveHybrid X6 employs an electrical vacuum pump. A mechanical failsafe function guarantees full operation of the brake system in the event of a failure or a fault in the electrical system. In this case, the stopping power required is generated by the hydraulic system alone, like on a conventional vehicle.

The primary task of the SBA system is to maximize the use of brake force available through the regeneration process. Via the xDrive powertrain, the hybrid system in the BMW ActiveHybrid X6 is able to transmit regenerative brake forces to all four wheels. And whenever the stopping power required exceeds the level of 3 meters/sec, the control unit builds up additional brake force through the mechanical brake by means of the active brake servo.

In braking situations critical to driving stability, the control unit receives additional signals from Dynamic Stability Control, affecting brakes and engine management to keep the vehicle safely on course. This ensures safe braking under all conditions, regardless of whether the stopping power needed is generated electrically or hydraulically.

All driving stability systems are tailored to the dynamic character of the BMW ActiveHybrid X6. Dynamic Traction Control, for example, provides maximum traction and drive power on loose surfaces such as snow or sand thanks to its higher slip thresholds. And with the DTC mode activated, the driver may opt for a particularly sporting style of driving all the way to a controlled slip in corners.

BMW xDrive: intelligent all-wheel drive for extra performance, optimum driving stability and traction.
The sporty driving behavior of the BMW ActiveHybrid X6 is due largely to BMW’s xDrive all-wheel-drive system. Electronically controlled, variable distribution of drive power front-to-rear gives the BMW ActiveHybrid X6 superior traction and enhanced driving dynamics.

xDrive features smooth division of drive power through a transfer case with an electronically controlled multiple-plate clutch that feeds power to the axle with optimum wheel contact and grip on the road. Under normal conditions BMW xDrive distributes drive power to the front and rear axle in a 40:60 split. Sensors constantly measure wheel slip at both the front and rear, and varies the balance of drive power within a fraction of a second. Unlike conventional all-wheel-drive systems, xDrive “looks ahead” and does not only respond when a wheel has already begun to spin.

Electronic Power Steering for even greater efficiency.
The BMW ActiveHybrid X6 is the first Sports Activity Vehicle to feature Electronic Power Steering. This allows variable steering assistance both when driving with the combustion engine and in the all-electric mode.

Electronic Power Steering on the BMW ActiveHybrid X6 comes complete with fully integrated speed-related Servotronic steering assistance. Servotronic reduces assistance at high speeds ensuring not only directional stability but also extremely precise steering behavior in corner. At low speeds, on the other hand, for example when parking, extra power assistance significantly reduces the steering forces required.

Liquid cooling for even greater performance on the high-performance battery pack.

The high-performance battery pack comes with its own liquid cooling system incorporating a heat exchanger to cool the battery pack through the flow of air from the outside and, additionally, through a cooling circuit from the air conditioning system. These two circuits are activated either individually or in combination with one another, depending on need, with the control unit selecting the most effective and efficient cooling option as a function of ambient temperature and the temperature of the battery pack.

Cooling by the air conditioning system is activated by an appropriate switch valve, with the electrical climate compressor being switched on automatically whenever required. The battery cooling function is separate from the vehicle interior cooling function. Using the air conditioning system for battery pack cooling is far more efficient and effective than using air cooling alone to maintain the battery pack at the optimum operating temperature thereby preserving the hybrid functions longer in extreme weather and sport driving conditions. As befits The Ultimate Driving Machine, the BMW X6 ActiveHybrid provides a driving experience like no other hybrid in the marketplace.

Intelligent energy management and integral safety concept.
The electronics for BMW ActiveHybrid have been developed especially for energy efficiency and driving flexibility. The control system constantly controls the distribution of energy as a function of ambient conditions, the status of the vehicle, and the demands made by the driver. The two overriding control factors are the charge status of the battery pack and the capture of energy generated through regeneration.

The BMW ActiveHybrid X6 fulfills BMW’s integral safety concepts that have been updated for hybrid vehicles. Examples of the features of this safety concept are the different colors of cables to avoid confusion, the presentation of clear safety warnings, and protection of the entire electrical system via extra-large insulation panels and newly developed connectors.

The high-voltage battery pack is housed in a reinforced steel casing and is located just above the rear axle at an extremely safe location in the event of a collision. The status of the battery pack is constantly supervised by integrated safety electronics, and the driver will be informed immediately of any malfunction and, if necessary, the entire system can be automatically discharged and deactivated. In the event of a crash, the system is switched off automatically within a fraction of a second. The central safety electronics then assess the severity of the accident and ensure a safe operating mode if possible.

Hybrid-specific Auto Start Stop function.
The BMW ActiveHybrid X6 is equipped with a new generation of Auto Start Stop technology, specifically tailored to the requirements of a hybrid vehicle. Auto Start Stop functions at all ambient temperatures. While the engine is switched off, the electric air-conditioning compressor automatically maintains the climate and temperature desired within the passenger compartment. All other electrically operated functions continue uninterrupted, with the on-board network supplied with power from the battery pack. The hybrid Auto Start Stop can be deactivated by choosing the Manual gearshift mode on the automatic transmission.

Displays inform the driver of the operating status and efficiency of the hybrid system.
Status of the hybrid system and current operating conditions are presented in two locations. The most important information is shown in the instrument cluster, separated according to operating mode. Further information and technical explanations are shown in the Central Display.

The drive displays are split into a conventional tachometer for the combustion engine and electric drive display in the lower part of the instrument cluster. The electric drive display shows the charge status of the battery pack, the regeneration status, and the electric motor operating status. In the Central Display, this information is supplemented by additional data on current operating conditions and the current flow of energy.

Specific set-up of the suspension and the lightweight brakes.
The chassis and suspension of the BMW Active Hybrid X6 is largely the same as the technology already featured on the BMW X6 xDrive50i. The front suspension is a double A-arm configuration ensuring excellent driving dynamics, comfort, and directional stability. Self-leveling with air suspension provides a constant ride height, even when carrying a heavy load.

Lightweight brakes decelerate the BMW ActiveHybrid X6 by means of aluminum floating calipers and brake rotors incorporating aluminum hubs (or hats). Lightweight materials engineering reduces unsprung mass and improves the vehicle’s driving comfort and agility. Brake disc diameter is 15.2 inches up front and 13.6 inches at the rear.

20-inch light-alloy Aero wheels featuring an aerodynamically optimized design have been developed exclusively for the BMW ActiveHybrid X6. 19-inch light-alloy wheels with all-season tires are available as an option. In each case the tires feature runflat technology which enables the driver to continue driving after a complete loss of pressure.

Bodyshell and safety: intelligent lightweight construction, optimized occupant safety.
Intelligent lightweight construction and a special body structure for maximum rigidity also characterize the unibody of the BMW ActiveHybrid X6.

The BMW ActiveHybrid X6 comes with three-point inertia-reel seat belts for all seats featuring belt force limiters and belt pretensioners on the front seats. To protect the occupants from cervical spine injury in the event of a collision at the rear, the front seats feature crash-activated headrests, the rear seats come as standard with ISOFIX child seat fastenings. The vehicle is equipped with frontal and hip thorax airbags, and side-curtain head airbags.

All restraint systems are controlled by central safety electronics including rollover sensors. The system can activate the side-curtain airbags and belt pretensioners in the event of an impending rollover.

Standard adaptive bi-xenon headlights ensure optimum illumination of the road ahead by steering with the vehicle. A daytime running light function operates through the corona rings. The BMW ActiveHybrid X6 also features a windshield-mounted sensor that automatically controls the lights and windshield wipers on demand. Additional comfort at night is provided by available Automatic High Beams which will automatically dim the high beam headlights when an oncoming vehicle is detected. The standard Head-Up Display projects information relevant to the driver onto the windscreen.

The BMW ActiveHybrid X6: Sports Activity Coupe of the highest standard, BMW ActiveHybrid with maximum efficiency.
The BMW ActiveHybrid X6 combines an innovative vehicle concept with cutting-edge drivetrain technology to provide a truly unique driving experience. The enhancement of both dynamic performance and efficiency gives BMW’s Sports Activity Coupe additional appeal. BMW ActiveHybrid technology helps to achieve a high level of efficiency in this versatile model.

From outside the BMW ActiveHybrid X6 differs from the conventional-drivetrain models in only a few details. With its elegant and dynamically flowing roofline and features typical of a BMW, the Sports Activity Coupe offers a uniquely sporting rendition of this very special vehicle with its unprecedented character, now as a full hybrid variant.

The “powerdome” hood distinguishes the vehicle from outside, “ActiveHybrid” model designations on the tailgate trim bar and the front doors as well as Bluewater Metallic paint offered for the first time on a BMW X6. Apart from the specific hybrid displays in the instrument cluster, door entry trim covers bearing the designation “BMW ActiveHybrid” on the driver’s and front passenger’s doors add a particular highlight and sign of distinction.

BMW Ultimate ServiceTM:
Providing owners with incredible value and peace of mind
The 2010 BMW ActiveHybrid X6 will feature BMW Ultimate ServiceTM, a suite of services that includes the BMW Maintenance Program (formerly called Full Maintenance), Roadside Assistance and the New Vehicle Limited Warranty. BMW AssistTM with TeleService is available on all X6 models.

BMW Ultimate ServiceTM includes:
The BMW Maintenance Program is the only no-cost maintenance program in the industry that covers wear and tear items like brake pads and rotors for 4 years or 50,000 miles, whichever comes first. BMW owners pay nothing for all scheduled inspections, oil changes, brake pads, wiper blade inserts and other wear-and-tear items.

BMW Roadside Assistance is one of the industry’s most comprehensive plans available. Not only is it no-charge for the first 4 years, but there is no mileage limit. BMW drivers enjoy the assurance of on-the-road help 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, anywhere in the United States, Canada and Puerto Rico. This includes everything from flat tire changes, emergency gasoline and lock-out assistance, to towing, alternative transportation and even trip-interruption benefits. This service also includes valuable trip routing advice.

BMW New Vehicle Limited Warranty: All 2010 BMW passenger vehicles are covered by BMW’s excellent Limited Warranty, which includes:
•	New-vehicle warranty – 4-year/50,000-mile coverage of the vehicle.
•	Rust-perforation warranty – 12-year/unlimited-mileage coverage.

BMW AssistTM provides the driver with services that enhance on-the-road security and convenience, for added peace of mind. The BMW Assist and Bluetooth® System is available and includes the Safety Plan for 4 years at no additional cost when ordered. BMW is the only manufacturer that offers this duration of service as other manufacturers only include the first year of service. The BMW Assist Safety Plan is a subscription based service that is subject to certain limitations.

The in-vehicle equipment for BMW Assist includes GPS technology and hands-free communication functions to deliver emergency and other services, accessed via buttons in the overhead or center console. The BMW Assist system transmits the location and vehicle information to the BMW Assist Response Center. A response specialist speaks with the vehicle occupants to coordinate dispatch, notify emergency contacts on file, and link BMW Roadside Assistance or emergency services as needed and/or requested. A severe accident automatically activates the Automatic Collision Notification function. The BMW Assist Safety Plan also includes Door Unlock and Stolen Vehicle Recovery services, which can save the owner time and money. New to BMW Assist is MyInfo, which allows users to send business listings and street addresses with associated phone numbers from the internet, directly to their BMW.

TeleService automatically notifies the BMW center when the vehicle will need service. A service advisor then proactively calls the customer to set up a convenient appointment and have the needed parts ready.

BMW Assist subscribers can also enroll in the BMW Assist Convenience Plan (available at an additional cost of $199 per year) to avail themselves of many BMW Assist concierge services, from finding the lowest fuel price or the best French restaurant in the area to information on flight arrival gates or times, as well as receive directions, and traffic and weather information. On 2007 and later models, a selected destination and its phone number can be sent directly to the BMW Navigation system and the customer’s Bluetooth linked mobile phone, after a push of the Concierge menu option. New is BMW Search, which allows online access to the Google Maps database inside the vehicle to quickly find a desired business with just a key word. The Convenience Plan also includes Critical Calling, a service that can connect the driver to a requested party via a response specialist in case their mobile phone is not in the vehicle or its battery is discharged.

Lastly, the BMW Assist system includes Bluetooth hands-free phone connectivity with phonebook access and speech recognition for dialing by name or number via the steering wheel controls. Use of this feature requires a customer-provided compatible Bluetooth mobile phone. To learn more about BMW Assist, please visit www.bmwassist.com.

Not really a surprise anymore, the upcoming 2010 BMW X6 Hybrid continues its testing sessions on U.S. soil. This time, the X6 Hybrid was spotted near Santa Maria, California. The first Sports Activity Hybrid is moving fast through the FEP(Final Evaluation Stages) and it’s preparing for the official launch this fall.

A production-ready vehicle will be showcased at the upcoming IAA Frankfurt Motor Show, along with the 755ih…..yes, “h” for hybrid. The BMW X6 ActiveHybrid uses a two-mode hybrid system which has discrete modes for high-torque, low speed driving as well as for high-speed cruises.

The hybrid design technology has been developed in a partnership with Daimler and General Motors, called the “Global Hybrid Cooperation”.

BMWs Active Hybrid drive technology provides an efficiency savings of 20% over the regular X6 models. BMW may enhance the efficiency of the X6 Hybrid with plug-in charging capability or could offer this as a dealer installed option at a later date. Plug-in charging would require doubling the size of the X6’s conventional hybrid battery pack, or designing an optional location for the addition of a second battery pack (called a Battery Range Extender Module or BREM).

BMW is using a nickel metal hydride battery for the initial applications and unlike the other car manufacturers, the BMW hybrid engine will not be using cylinder deactivation.

The overall exterior design is almost identical with the regular X6 models, one element that stands out is a bulge on the hood. Even though not confirmed, we expect the base price of an X6 Hybrid to be set between $70,000-$80,000.

Thanks for the photo Samuel!

With just a few months before its official launch, the BMW X6 Hybrid has been spotted again in Spartanburg, South Carolina. Despite the fact that BMW has showcased the X6 Hybrid at several events, including the last one at X6 M International launch, the hybrid bimmer is still carrying some light camouflage.

Obviously the large Hybrid sticker on the side and back of the car gives it all away, but not that this vehicle was a highly guarded secret anymore. Our first encounter with the BMW X6 Hybrid took place at the L.A Auto Show in November 2008 and we absolutely loved the car displayed there.

While many of the X6 Hybrid design characteristics we have seen these transposed onto the production model also, there are still a few small changes, mostly up front, where the front bumper has been replaced by one found in the regular xDrive50i model.

Obviously the BMW X6 Hybrid differentiates itself from the rest of the family with a focus on fuel savings/hybrid technology. The newer and “greener” X6 will utilize a dual-mode ActiveHybrid system, which has discrete modes for high-torque, low speed driving as well as for high-speed cruises.

The system uses a modular hybrid system which can be adapted to many different engine/vehicle combination, as opposed to a design-specific petrol engine/hybrid combination, which sees wider use in the automotive industry.

The two-mode hybrid uses about 20 percent less fuel than than a comparable vehicle with combustion engine. With the launch of a 7 Series Hybrid model as well, it will be interesting to follow their progress in the U.S. market and what the adoption rate will be. While the technology incorporated into the X6 Hybrid sounds fascinating, there is still a major concern regarding pricing which is expected to be higher than the top model xDrive50i.

Our German editor at BimmerToday, found something interesting buried down in a German press release issued a few days ago: the 2010 BMW X6, September built, will receive for the first time, an M Sport Package. And even more exciting, BMW has finally announced that the 2010 BMW X5 and X6 models will be receiving the new iDrive controller and the Drive logic including the hard drive and USB port.

The X6 M Sport Package will focus not only on the exterior appearance, but also on increasing the engine performance. The M Package is exclusively reserved for the gasoline powered models. The BMW X6 xDrive35i will get 20 horsepower extra which will bring the total power to 326 horsepower.

The already powerful X6 xDrive50i will receive a significant power upgrade: 40 ponies to a total of 449 horsepower.

BMW X6 M is represented in this photo and not the actual M Sport Package

The M Package can only be combined with the two exterior colors: Alpine White and Titanium Silver. The package also comes with 20″ black wheels. Other components of the X6 M Sport Package are: BMW Individual High Gloss Shadow Line, black painted mirror caps, tailpipes with black color accents, Alcantara sport seats and Anthracite roof lining.

No pricing has been announced at this time.

The BMW tuner Hartge continues to surprise us by releasing a new aerodynamic kit for the BMW X6 Sports Activity ...

The BMW tuner Hartge continues to surprise us by releasing a new aerodynamic kit for the BMW X6 Sports Activity Vehicle. Back in April, they released their original X6 kit and we weren’t overly impressed.

But the latest Hartge kit takes after the recently revealed X6 M, giving their X6 a far more aggressive stance which will turn heads.

The aero kits includes plenty of aerodynamic pieces, starting with the aggressive front bumper, a custom rear skirt and continuing with side sills, new rear difuser and stainless tailpipes.

For those of you interested in the actual parts used, Hartge released that earlier today:

51 71 0000 G
HARTGE aerodynamic kit in PUR-RIM, primed and with ABE homologation by the KBA consisting of:

HARTGE front spoiler
HARTGE rear skirt
HARTGE left and right side sills
(only in connection with standard aluminium running boards – no. 328)
HARTGE wheel arch extensions front * and rear
(* with air intakes)

for xDrive30d, xDrive35d and xDrive35i
(only in connection with HARTGE stainless steel tail pieces with quadrilateral tail pipes 18 71 0400) and

for xDrive50i
(only in connection with HARTGE stainless steel rear silencer with quadrilateral tail pipes 18 71 0495)

18 71 0400 F
HARTGE stainless steel tail pieces with quadrilateral tail pipes (large version) left and right for xDrive30d, xDrive35d and for xDrive35i (only in connection with
HARTGE adapter 18 71 0320)
(incl. connecting pipe for standard rear silencer)
(only in connection with HARTGE aerodynamic kit 51 71 0000)

18 71 0320 N
HARTGE adapter for xDrive35i

18 71 0495 F
HARTGE stainless steel rear silencer with quadrilateral tail pipes (large version) left and right for xDrive50i (export version / sound +) (only in connection with HARTGE aerodynamic kit 51 71 0000)

After seeing these photos, we’re definitely giving thumbs up to the new Hartge BMW X6, as long as the price is not higher than an X6 M.

The New York Auto Show remains in history as the first motor show where BMW has officially revealed their first ...

The New York Auto Show remains in history as the first motor show where BMW has officially revealed their first all-wheel drive M car, the X6 M. Even though the X6 M is not considered by BMW as being an SUV-type of car, bimmer fans will often refer to it as the first M SUV.

We were fortunate to attend the official launch of this new Motorsport model and we were quite excited about the design and technologies behind this car. Despite the always crowded BMW floor, we managed to spend some time with the car and snapped some photos for you.

Since we were waiting for the production model to launch before we can share with you all of our findings, we got beaten to it by Kamil at CarGuyDad, who spent some time himself with a production ready model near the Spartanburg plant.

He goes into more details and shared with us some known and unknown things about the BMW X6 M. Head over to his blog and see what he had to say.
