Even though not officially announced, we expect the X5 M to receive a minor styling upgrade just as the X6 M. The two M-SAVs will go on sale this spring for $88,850 (X5 M) and $91,900 (X6 M). This represents an increase of $1,600 for both models over the 2012 production year.

The 2013 X5 M and X6 M now come with the blue painted M brake calipers, as seen on the M5 sedan, as well as with standard M multifunction seats.

The X6 M benefits additionally from the X6 LCI with a new, wider kidney grille and redesigned tail lights featuring glowing LED light bars. Additionally, the updated X6 M features an aluminum powerdome hood similar to the one seen on the M3 and ActiveHybrid X6. Both models may be equipped with the new, optional LED headlights (552) to complete the front-end update.

Optional equipment:

Active Ventilated Seat Package (ZAV) – Active Ventilated Seat package no longer includes SA456 and has been re-priced to $900.

Full LED Headlights (552) now available as a stand-alone option for $1,900

Now, either M light alloy wheel style may be ordered on the either model at no charge (2NT remains standard on X5 M, 2NU remains standard on X6 M).

The BMW X6 M will debut in April at the New York Auto Show.

The 555-horsepower BMW X5 M and BMW X6 M now feature variations of exclusivity and individuality.

With the extension of the program, the BMW X5 M and BMW X6 M will now be available with; BMW Individual Paintwork, BMW Individual Extended Leather Trim Merino, BMW Individual Interior Trim, Soft Close function for doors, DVD system at rear, 6 DVD Changer and BMW Internet. The BMW Individual X5 M further comes with a panorama glass roof, while the BMW Individual X6 M comes with an electric glass roof and is available as a 4+1 seater version.

Established in 1991 as a division of BMW M GmbH, the BMW Individual program is poised at leading the trend towards more individuality by concentrating on customers who are looking for made-to-measure solutions and making tougher demands on their BMW in terms of distinction, design and function.

“BMW Individual is synonymous with technical ambition and the desire for automotive perfection. Apart from offering a holistic vehicle concept with a broad range available to the customer for each model series, customers are able to select and put together their own personal combination of high-quality materials to create a harmonious composition of paints, leather and interior trim,” said Mr Neil Fiorentinos, Managing Director of BMW Group Asia.

“With BMW Individual program, BMW fans will now be able to turn their beloved cars into a subtle statement of their personality by adding in their own personal touch aside from settling for the standardized version.”

High Performance Re-Defined:

BMW X5 M and BMW X6 M.

Now the discerning customer has the opportunity to enjoy the unique high-performance character of a BMW M car also in the segment of BMW X models: The BMW X5 M and the BMW X6 M are the first all-wheel-drive models to offer the supreme performance, dynamic driving features, athletic design, and premium quality of a typical BMW M Car.

Both models are powered by a high-performance V8 engine delivering 555 hp at an engine speed range between of 6,000 rpm from an engine capacity of 4,395 cc. The BMW M TwinPower Turbo engine is indeed the world’s first power unit with a common exhaust manifold encompassing both rows of cylinders and featuring Twin Scroll Twin Turbo Technology.

BMW’s intelligent xDrive all-wheel-drive system is naturally geared to the specific power and performance characteristics of the BMW X5 M and the BMW X6 M, just like Dynamic Performance Control also standard on both models. Interacting with the cars’ special M suspension including Adaptive Drive and the Servotronic power steering, this ensures the driving behavior so characteristic of a BMW M Car, combining unique driving stability with precisely controlled steering qualities all the way to the highest level of driving dynamics.

The BMW X5 M and the BMW X6 M set the benchmark in this segment of high-performance models in terms of acceleration, lateral dynamics, steering behavior, stopping power, and efficiency. Both models accelerate to 100 km/h from a standstill in 4.7 seconds and stand out not only through the truly impressive delivery of power by the V8 turbo engine providing maximum torque of 680 Newton-meters in the broad speed range between 1,500 and 5, 650 rpm, but also through the likewise smooth and consistent build-up of lateral forces meeting the highest requirements and the most dynamic level of performance in bends.

The exclusive character of both the BMW X5 M and the BMW X6 M results to a large extent from a level of driving performance unique in this particular segment. Both models offer the ultimate in their segment in every respect, providing performance and dynamic driving reserves quite unique versus the competition and ensuring an experience of unlimited supremacy in everyday traffic.

BMW M TwinPower Turbo: Twin Scroll Twin Turbo Technology with a joint exhaust manifold for both rows of cylinders making its debut in the market.

Power and performance typical of BMW M is delivered by the power unit specifically developed for both the BMW X5 M and the BMW X6 M featuring the BMW M TwinPower Turbo technology. The BMW M TwinPower Turbo technology is developed on the basis of Twin Scroll Twin Turbo technology and the exhaust manifold extending over both rows of cylinders patented by BMW offer absolutely extreme response and spontaneity, a linear build-up of engine power, and an unusually consistent torque curve.

The two turbochargers are positioned together with the catalytic converters in the V-section between the two rows of cylinders. The position of the intake and exhaust ducts provided in this way serves to reduce the length of the pipes and manifolds and increase their cross-section, with pressure losses on the exhaust side being significantly minimized in the process.

The joint flow of exhaust gas provided by the common manifold system connecting two cylinders at a time also ensures optimum gas throughput. The separation of exhaust flow is continued until the exhaust gas reaches the turbine wheel, building up ongoing pressure on the two Twin Scroll Turbochargers not impaired by any kind of counter-pressure.

With maximum charge pressure amounting to 1.5 bar, the use of Twin Scroll Twin Turbo technology with its inter-cylinder exhaust manifold makes unique use of the turbo-charging potential.

Immediate, direct response to the gas pedal and truly exceptional pulling force from the engine starting at low speeds and continuing consistently to the highest load level characterize the BMW M TwinPower Turbo technology from BMW M GmbH. The truly impressive development of power ensured in this way is accompanied by fascinating engine sound accentuating the fast-revving engine characteristics and the linear build-up of power by a supreme acoustic effect typical of a BMW M Car.

Reflecting the superior power of the engine, the high-performance V8 power unit comes with a cooling system developed specifically for the two new models. One special feature in this context is the indirect intercooling effect serving to optimize performance under particularly dynamic driving conditions.

The power unit in both BMW X5 M and BMW X6 M featuring the BMW M TwinPower Turbo technology develops the outstanding output and performance with equally outstanding efficiency. In addition to direct fuel injection with High Precision Injection technology, both the BMW X5 M and the BMW X6 M are equipped with a wide range of technologies from BMW EfficientDynamics. Apart from Brake Energy Regeneration, these also include on-demand control of the electrical fuel pump, a detectable a/c compressor, as well as a volume flow-controlled supply of hydraulic fluid to the anti-roll system also operating specifically on demand.

Both models offer average fuel consumption in the EU test cycle of 13.9 liters per 100 kilometers. Their CO2 rating is 325 grams per kilometer. And last but not least, the engine naturally fulfils all the requirements of the US LEV II standard as well as the EU5 requirements in Europe.

The BMW Individual Paintwork

In line with the understatement embodied in the BMW design language that governs all model series, the experts at BMW Individual always try to harmonize each customer’s wishes with the BMW philosophy. The individual paintwork is more than a color: It captivates its customers through its unique brilliance and sophisticated iridescent effects. Thanks to a fine pigmentation, changing nuances appear, depending on how the light falls, which give the surface a new dimension and depth. The intrinsic excitement of the color black is demonstrated in three variations: including Azurite Black metallic, Ruby Black metallic and Citrine Black metallic. When it comes to avant-garde exterior colors: the elegant, light shades of Pearl Silver metallic preferred particularly by buyers in sunny regions: Under blue skies, this paint finish shines with a special glamour.

The BMW Individual Leather

The Merino leather used by BMW Individual is characterized by its uniquely refined appeal, extreme durability and comfort. Gentle tanning methods and “barrel pigmentation”, in which the dye penetrates through intensive rotation and is not just applied to the surface; give this material its richness of color, strength and durability. The living structure of this leather comes from its natural graining rather than artificial embossing. The finish applied in the semi-aniline process stops fading caused by light, and yet the leather stays breathable. The combination of all these sophisticated yet gentle processes produces seats that are as soft and as smooth as velvet. BMW Individual will offer customers five color choices of Merino leather: Platinum, Champagne, Slate, Criollo Brown and Amaro Brown.

BMW Individual Interior trimmings.
It’s the many details that make the difference with BMW Individual. The interior trimmings made from piano varnish are the most sophisticated finish. The black, high-gloss polished surface is only achieved by famous piano makers using a time-consuming polishing and finishing process. This is what gives this varnish its unique brilliance. Elegant highlights are added through details such as the center console and ceiling grips. No less sophisticated

Press Release: When you take your car for styling and tuning to HAMANN -Motorsportin Laupheim, Germany, the end result will always be amazing. This also occurred when customizing the BMW X5 M and turning it into the HAMANN Flash Evo M. Whether you need a bodykit, light alloy wheels, increased performance or visual enhancement of the interior – HAMANN makes it possible.

The BMW X5 M rolls off the assembly-line already with many exceptional attributes that give it a sense of a sports car. HAMANN dresses up this genre, adding the newly developed Flash Evo M-Bodykit. From now on, a striking front spoiler will be fitted with two or four integrated LED daytime running lights, large air intakes that supply the engine as well as the brake system with fresh air.

The carbon bonnet presents itself as a perfect match and contributes with its additional air inlets and outlets to optimize the temperature inside the engine compartment. Side sill bars connect the massive fender extensions and give the X5 M a considerably higher presence. The two central tailpipes of the sport exhaust system are integrated into the diffuser that is installed into the rear spoiler. The carbon roof spoiler adds to the necessary downforce. Even the exterior mirror heads present themselves in a stylish black carbon fibre.

Upon request, several 22 or 23 inch light alloy wheels amplify effectively the sporty appearance of the HAMANN Flash Evo M and skilfully fill in the wide wheel housings. The exclusive DESIGN UNIQUE FORGED “ANODIZED” rim, available in 23 inch with matt black anodized spokes, gives it a truly sporty appearance. The special forging technique applied makes the rim super light but at the same time offers a very high bearing load.

By using progressively wound suspension springs, HAMANN is able to lower the center of gravity of the BMW X5 M by 30 mm. This emphasizes even more the sporty appearance of the Flash Evo M bodykit.

HAMANN offers two performance improvement systems: First, the ECU is optimized by removing the factory-installed Vmax restriction of 250 km/h. Then, power is increased from 408 kW/555 hp and 680 Nm torque to an impressive 449 kW/610 hp and a torque of 780 Nm.

For an extra kick, HAMANN supplies the HM 670 sports kit. In addition to the optimization of the ECU, a rear sports muffler and catalyst replacement pipes are being used. This way, between 1500 and 5650 RPM, the torque is increased to 950 Nm. According to the data sheet, 493 kW/670 hp are also available and ensure that the HAMANN Flash Evo M can reach a top speed of 300 km/h.

Stopping at these speeds requires additional safety, for which HAMANN has developed a high-performance brake system, using 405 mm diameter brake discs in front and 340 mm diameter brake discs at the rear. 6-pot callipers provide the delay at the front axle, while 4-pot callipers do their work at the rear axle. Steal flex brake lines prevent the dreaded fading during high stresses.

When checking out the interior, the first thing one will notice is the HAMANN airbag sport steering wheel and the speedometer, indicating a top speed of 320 km/h. But this is only the beginning: Upon request, the in-house saddlery shop can provide you with two-coloured, quilted leather with decorative stitching and Alcantara, as interior finish. To round it all off, an interior package is available with appliqué made of visible carbon fibre and a stainless steel sill plate with an illuminated HAMANN logo. The feet of the driver may rest on pedals and a foot rest available in optional silver or black anodized aluminium. HAMANN floor mats and a trunk mat top off the luxurious appearance.

Joe M., a reader of BMWBLOG, decided to share with us some photos of his 2010 BMW X5M equipped with a hitch module.

Joe uses a factory tow hitch with the hardware and software module, and shows how to use the X5M for towing a ski jet. Ever since its introduction as the first xDrive M car ever built, the BMW X5M has been somewhat criticizes by the purists. The 5,368 lbs X5M has been struggling to gain acceptance from the BMW community, despite its impressive performance and versatility.

For a car of this weight, the X5M shows impressive performance numbers. The BMW X5 M uses the same engine as its “twin”, the X6 M, a tuned up 4.4 liter V8 engine delivering 555 horsepower at 6,000 rpm and 500 lb-ft of torque from 1,500 to 5,650 rpm. The engine uses the twin-scroll twin turbo technology with High Precision Direct Injection.

0 to 60 mph is achieved in only 4.5 seconds and the car delivers supreme performance even on the race track.

Some of us believe the X5M offers the perfect balance, a fun M model that can deliver on the Ultimate Driving Machine slogan, and also, the perfect family car for those times needed to haul around more than just yourself.

Joe’s photos of the X5M come to give us a different angle, an X5M that can take us faster than any other SUV to a weekend gateway, while towing a fun machinery like the ski jet.

Usually known for their Porsche tuner program, the company expands its line-up with BMW vehicles.

First in line to get an aesthetic and power upgrade, is the BMW X5 M. The M SAV receives a new body kit with massive front bumper that feature larger than usual air inlets. Incorporated into the bumper there are also horizontal vertical LED daylight running lights.

The hood is made out of carbon fiber and has additional fully functional air vents. Front and rear fenders were widened by 70mm, respectively 80mm, and a new rear bumper has unique cutouts for quad exhaust tips.

Same rear bumper includes includes a carbon fiber rear diffuser.

Mansory X5 M also features a new sport exhaust system.

Engine wise, Mansory takes the X5 M from 555 horsepower and 500 lb-ft of torque to 670 horsepower and maximum torque to 700 lb-ft at 5,900rpm. As a result, X5 M sprints now from 0-62 mph in a scant 4.2 seconds (half a second better than a stock X5 M), while its top speed has been elevated to 186 mph.

Other technical changes includes an ECU upgrade and a suspension change lowering the car up to 40 mm. A sports break system with larger discs and multi-piston brake callipers is also available. Other chassis improvements include 23-inch, 20-spoke aluminum wheels, Michelin performance tires, and revised springs, which lower the X5′s ride height by 1.6 inches all around.

Inside, apart from an Alcantara-covered steering wheel and a revised two-tone color scheme, the interior remains close to the standard model.

According to a press release, the company is also working on X6 and 7 Series sedan upgrades as well.

Thanks to optimised air flow and up to 15 % more cooling, the G-POWER body kit clears the way for an increase in the base output of the 4.4 l V8 bi-turbo power unit of 170 hp to no less than 725 hp.

G-POWER X5 M TYPHOON

* 725 hp / 533 kW at 6,000 r/min (+ 170 hp / 125 kW)

* 890 Nm at 1,500 r/min (+ 210 Nm)

* V max – more than 300 km/h

* 0-100 km/h – 4.2s

* TYPHOON aerodynamic package starting at € 12.185,– (net)

Muscular flared wheel arches plus distinctive skirts and spoilers on the front and rear trimmed for maximum aerodynamic efficiency define the look of the G-POWER X5 M TYPHOON. The body kit in original equipment quality made from PU RIM was developed by G-POWER designers using state-of-the-art CAD technology. The base vehicle was fully digitised in-house with a 3D scanner.

The elegant sweep of the flared G-POWER wheel arches front and rear – which, of course, come with perfectly matched inner panels – give the X5 M seven centimetres more width, making room for extra-wide 23-inch wheels and tyres. The top-end version comes with G-POWER SILVERSTONE RS forged wheels developed specifically for the TYPHOON, with 11Jx23 format up front and 12Jx23 on the rear. Each corner sports 315/25 ZR 23 high-performance rubber from development partner Michelin, delivering optimum traction and sporty handling that is further enhanced by the G-POWER sports suspension and a 30 mm lower ride height.

Together with the flared wheel arches, the face of the exclusive SUV is distinguished largely by the G-POWER TYPHOON front skirt designed entirely in-house. The large air intakes not only improve overtaking prestige, they also guarantee optimum cooling of the engine and front brakes. Moreover, design refinements succeeded in reducing aerodynamic lift on the front axle.

The sills on the TYPHOON serve not only as aerodynamically efficient transitions between the front and rear flares, they also house five LED units on each side that illuminate the ground on each side of the vehicle when activated either by remote control or by pulling the door handle. Along the upper surfaces, stainless steel inserts integrate a G-POWER logo also illuminated in blue.

Like the front section, the rear skirt on the TYPHOON is conceived to completely replace the production-standard bumper. The diffuser has an imposing impact on the rear view, as do the two distinctive 114 mm tailpipes on the G-POWER stainless steel sports silencer. Together with the spoiler fixed to the rear hatch, which adds visual length to the roofline, minimal lift has been achieved at the rear axle, too. A further example of the detailed refinements in the design of the G-POWER TYPHOON Wide Version for the BMW X5 M is the four-part underbody panelling.

In keeping with the dynamic look, G-POWER offers a mighty power unit for the BMW X5 M. Thanks to the enlarged air intakes in the front skirt and the outlet vents in the bonnet, there is an improved flow of cooling air to the radiator and oil cooler at the front of the vehicle, increasing cooling performance by around 15%. This establishes the basis for a thermally balanced performance increase achieved by electronic optimisation developed by G-POWER and involving changes to the engine mapping including removal of the top speed limiter. On the exhaust side, a fully stainless steel G-POWER system delivers the necessary reduction in exhaust back pressure featuring a set of sport catalytic converters and most important a set of flow optimized G-POWER exhaust manifolds connecting the turbochargers. In addition, optimised connection pipes have also been installed between the turbochargers and the cylinder heads to minimise pressure and thermodynamic losses. The outcome is an additional 170 hp, taking the overall output to an impressive 725 hp at 6,000 r/min and 890 Nm of torque at 1,500 r/min. The maximum torque is electronically limited. In combination with a reinforcement of the standard BMW X6 M automatic transmission a torque maximum of 1000 Nm can be provided.

The enormous potential of the G-POWER modified BMW V8 bi-turbo power unit endows the X5 M with on-the-road performance that catapults it into the elite group at the very top of this vehicle class. The sprint from 0 to 100 km/h lasts only 4.2 seconds, with the top speed at over 300 km/h.

G-POWER has refined the interior of the BMW X5 M with exclusive accessories like an ergonomically designed sports steering wheel, a G-POWER speedometer and fine carbon-fibre trim on the side panels, centre console and dashboard. Further preferences can be fulfilled with exclusive interiors in all shades of leather and Alcantara.

Pricing for the TYPHOON aerodynamics package starts at € 12.185.00,– plus installation by G-POWER in Autenzell. The price for the 23-inch G-POWER SILVERSTONE RS or EDITION wheel set with MICHELIN tyres is € 8,865.55,–. The G-POWER power boost to 725 hp including complete exhaust system and modifications to the turbocharger installation is available for € 18,000.00,-

The video was shot in Germany and it shows the X5M in all its glory, especially once it hits the autobahn. Revving and accelerating is what the X5M does best and as you will see in the video below, 100mph comes quite fast in this M vehicle.

“There will never be an M version of the X5″. This exact phrase was mentioned first years back when BMW introduced the high-end X5 4.8is model. Fast forward a few years and the phrase turned into “This is not a real M car, what were they thinking?”

No really, what was BMW really thinking? Or could they have really nailed it down with this first all-wheel drive M car?

Most of the reviews have been positive, sales are on the ascending path and this niche market became more interesting, and while almost no one doubts the M athletic capabilities of this car, there are still plenty BMW aficionado that reject the existence of M core in this new model.

Is the video below enough to convince some of us? Let’s have a look.

The first M SAV coming from BMW, goes through an extensive review and the conclusion places the dot on the “i” and the cross on the “t”: the BMW X5 M is an engineering masterpiece and BMW could turn it into a best seller.

“All that said, I have to admit I’m a bit torn. If a car is – taken as a whole – the most complex consumer product you can buy, the X5 M then represents an engineering triumph, as its combination of mechanical supremacy and computational wizardry is second to none. It’s upsettingly fast, brutally athletic and the glorious brakes are most likely banned F1 technology. Swathed in many gallons of Monte Carlo Blue Metallic paint, its bulgy looks have even grown on me. Moreover, it delivers a mule-kick upside the head of Newtonian physics.

The M might as well stand for Magic. And therein lies the conflict.

As in so what? Who cares? Does the man that has everything really need a $90,000 SUV that can upstage and outperform all but top shelf sports cars?

Probably not. Actually, most definitely not. Though, of course, the last time we checked, the market place is still open to most ideas, no matter how unhinged. Besides, while obnoxious on multiple levels (both us and the car), we had an absolute blast during our seven reality-defying days with the BMW X5 M. In the end, laughter may prove to not only be the best medicine, but the best sales tool as well.”

Here is an excerpt from the review:

Saturday morning I decided to take Baby Huey here down to Cars and Coffee in Irvine, about 45 minutes from home. I don’t know Orange County very well and can never remember the exit. However, as I passed Disneyland I spied a bright yellow Caterham Superlight R, which could only be going to one place at 6:20 in the morning. Determined to get there, I just followed the Se7en.

As we exited the freeway, the Caterham’s pilot gunned it around a sharp corner. Figuring, “Let’s just see,” I followed suit, one-handing the X5 M’s tiller sharply to the right. What transpired is one of the most eye-popping and perplexing few seconds of my auto-reviewing career. The X5 M stayed with the Caterham. Inch for inch, line for line, apex to apex, the giant blue hulk perfectly mimicked the Se7en’s nimble flight path. Not only that, but when we straightened out, the 5,386 pound lard-ass was able to out accelerate the 1,200 pound British bantamweight. I burst out in laughter, a long, heartfelt, sustained thirty-second belly-laugh. No way man. There’s absolutely no way that just happened. Couldn’t have. But, much to my extreme disbelief (not to mention whatever was going through the Caterham driver’s mind), the X5 M totally, fully 100-percent opened up a can of 9,000 calorie whoop-ass on Colin Chapman’s lightweight ideal. And just then, all 90,000 of the X5 M’s ridiculous dollars suddenly made complete sense.

Also, the rear end rotates.

I’ve experienced the DPC (Dynamic Performance Control) before on the X6 (both straight-six and 400-horsepower V8), but never in such a powerful vehicle. DPC means that the rear axle employs torque vectoring technology and works like so: When you’re at speed and turn the wheel to the left, the rear right wheel gets the bulk of the power, allowing you to largely leave the throttle in while cornering. Vice-versa when you turn to the right. I’ll be damned if the rear end doesn’t feel as if it’s pivoting around a point. It’s a wonderful feeling, albeit a wonderfully comical feeling as you’re sitting six-feet off the ground and breaking many of nature’s laws. But wonderful nonetheless. Every time I put my foot in it and murdered a corner, I found myself realizing that it’s as easy to play back road hero in the X5 M as it is in a Mazda Miata. A 2.7 ton Miata with a lampshade on its head and a serious coke habit. But again, the damn thing can dance the dance. It’s all totally ridiculous, and I’m still shaking my head in disbelief.

In some models, the power supply cables leading to the side marker lamps are missing. The lamps can’t illuminate, and this means the vehicles fail to comply with federal motor vehicle safety standard No. 108 regarding lamps and reflective devices.

Summary:
BMW IS RECALLING CERTAIN MODEL YEAR 2010 X5 M SAV VEHICLES FOR FAILING TO COMPLY WITH THE REQUIREMENTS OF FEDERAL MOTOR VEHICLE SAFETY STANDARD NO. 108, “LAMPS, REFLECTIVE DEVICES, AND ASSOCIATED EQUIPMENT,” THESE VEHICLE’S WERE EQUIPPED WITH SIDE MARKER LAMPS, BUT NOT THE POWER SUPPLY CABLES LEADING TO THE LAMPS. AS A RESULT, THE SIDE MARKER LAMPS DO NOT ILLUMINATE.

Consequence:
THESE VEHICLES DO NOT COMPLY WITH REQUIREMENTS OF FMVSS NO. 108.
Remedy:
BMW HAS NOT YET PROVIDED A REMEDY OR AN OWNER NOTIFICATION SCHEDULE FOR THIS CAMPAIGN. OWNERS MAY CONTACT BMW AT 800-525-7417.

Affected model(s):
2010 BMW X5 M SAVs produced between 7/1/09 and 1/25/10.
To clarify this issue, we reached out to BMW for an official response and further clarifications:

Number of vehicles : Approximately 735.

What is the problem?

The affected vehicles were not equipped with the power supply cables for the front side marker lamps (lamps are located in the outer corner of the headlight cluster).

What can happen?
The front side marker lamps will not illuminate.

Does this affect the ability to signal for turns?
No. Turn signal and hazard light operation are not affected.

Can customers continue to drive their vehicles?
Yes, but BMW recommends that owners of affected vehicles, who will receive a letter asking them to schedule an appointment with their Authorized BMW SAV center, do so as soon as they receive the notification letter.

How will customers be informed of the recall?
Owners of affected vehicles will receive a letter via First Class mail asking them to make a Service appointment with their Authorized BMW SAV center. The letters should go out in May 2010, or once the parts have been distributed to dealers. The repair may take up to four hours. Additional time may be required depending on the center’s scheduling and processing. The repair is free of charge.

The two top sports cars in the segment of the BMW X models can now be fitted with such features as the driver assistance systems Side View and Speed Limit Info. The Side View system comprises two cameras integrated in the side of the front bumpers, which means that intersecting traffic can be observed.

The images from these cameras are shown on the Control Display of the operating system iDrive, providing an advance view of the road situation to the left and right of the vehicle when coming out of blind exits such as narrow driveways or multi-storey car parks, for example. Speed Limit Info gives the driver the possibility of finding out about speed restrictions on the current route.

Here, a camera is installed on the windscreen in the area of the interior mirror which permanently monitors signs at the roadside as well as the variable displays on overhead gantries on motorways, comparing this information with the data from the navigation system. The figure thus obtained is displayed by means of a symbol on the instrument panel or in the Head-Up Display, as required.

Newly designed rear lights with especially narrow bands of light in the reversing lamps provide an enhanced sense of width in the BMW X5 M. Their homogeneously luminous light banks fed by LED also create a nocturnal design which is characteristic of the brand. They are now also fitted with dynamic LED brake lights which flash in the event of particularly intense deceleration, thereby providing a warning signal for drivers to the rear.

Or…does it really go without saying?

Cause judging by the video below, the drive of this BMW X5 M clearly overestimated the xDrive system in its powerful M car and…..it flipped upside down. As many automotive journalists have pointed out before, with the adoption of all-wheel drive as one of the most popular choices in the Northern and Midwest states, the semi-annual ritual of swapping snow tires has largely disappeared.

But as advanced as those all-wheel drive technologies are, they can’t always substitute for a set of snow tires. Before the car can rely on the AWD technology and its capability to detect and predict sliding, four rubbers are much needed for a solid contact with the ground, and not just any rubbers, but rather some good snow tires.

So next time you feel adventurous behind the wheel of your SUV/SAV, think about the importance of those winter tires. Yes we know, we all want to believe we’re great drivers, but you’ll never know…..

….and we’re still confused if he gives it thumbs up or down, but that’s somewhat expected. Despite the mixed review (at least we think it was mixed), Clarkson brings up some positive points as well as negative ones, one of the less pleasant ones being the first M-powered X5 and X6 to go to market when things aren’t so dandy for the automotive industry and not only.

Let’s have a look, shall we?

BMW’s Motorsport division has been busy creating the first ever M-powered X5. We must take this seriously because BMW’s M cars are almost always a cut above. The M5 is biblically good and the current M3, divine. It’s a full five seconds faster round the Ascari track than Merc’s 6.2-litre C-class and Audi’s RS4.

Thumbs up no. 1

The X5 M pulls off a similar trick. There is simply no other big SUV that goes, steers, stops or turns even half as well as this. You can fling it into bends and while the traction control is already ready to step in and stop you having too much fun and games, you can get the back to step out of line and sit there, in a controlled slide, just like you can with an M5 saloon.

Or maybe not?

Actually, I’m being silly. It’s nothing like an M5. An M5 is 5,000 times better in the bends because it’s lower and therefore has the laws of physics on its side. The X5 M is good for an SUV, and that’s it.

But here comes a real Thumbs up (No 2. if we count the previous one):

The best thing, though, is the complete absence of turbo lag. When turbos first came onto the scene — in a BMW incidentally, unless you are an American, in which case you will claim it was on a Chevrolet — there was always a pause from the moment you put your foot down to the moment anything happened.

Thumbs down? But really, isn’t an M car supposed to feel that way? A bit rougher at the edges?

There are, of course, a few downsides to its new-found sharpness. Like it’s fitted with fat tyres that render the car utterly useless in a field and are fairly hopeless everywhere else too. On a bumpy B road, the ride is so firm, you find yourself hanging on to the steering wheel just to stop yourself being bounced out of the seat. It’s not good enough, this. Not by a long way.

Thumbs down no…? Well, not really in our opinion. Seriously, does one expect ultimate interior luxury in the Ultimate Driving Machine, an M car made for the road not for carrying executives around….?

Nor is the interior, which is just about all right on a £40,000 diesel. But is emphatically not all right on a £78,000 heavyweight ballet dancer.

Thumbs down again…Well, call us fanboys, but this one makes no sense. The latest generation iDrive is quite fine.

And then there are the problems that blight its lesser brothers and sisters. Chief among these problems is the iDrive system, which offers up a wide range of driver options, none of which makes any sense. I did quite like the head-up display, though. Because when you are that high above the road, you really do feel like you’re in a low-flying jet.

Here comes the slam….Seriously? What about the people that want all-wheel drive and still the power of an M. Mind you, money is no objection here.

That said, I don’t really think the X5 M makes much sense except on a track, where it doesn’t make half as much sense as the cheaper, better M5, which, incidentally, comes with just as many seats.

And here is the conclusion:

Like the original, it’s clever from a technical standpoint but times have to be good for a car like this to make sense. And they aren’t. So it doesn’t. If you need a tall off-road car, buy a Range Rover diesel. If you need a five-seater that is fun, buy an M5. Don’t try to buy something that combines both things because what the X5 M proves is that really, it can’t be done.

Well, we guess it wasn’t so mixed after all and didn’t expect any less from Sir Clarkson. We so look forward to his BMW X6 ActiveHybrid test drive……

Recently, we have seen the BMW X5 M going tete-a-tete with the Audi Q7 V12 TDI and the Range Rover, but this time around, C&D gives us THE ultimate comparison: the controversial, but impressive BMW X5 M measured against the Grand Cherokee SRT8, Range Rover Sport Supercharged and Cayenne Turbo S.

Same as with the previous comparison, the X5 M takes the crown and its endorsement is even larger when coming from C&D. But before we jump into their review, let’s have a look at each car’s technical specs:

First Place: BMW X5 M

The first all-wheel-drive BMW made by the Motorsport division, X5 M is powered by 4.4 liter V8 twin-scroll turbo engine that outputs 555 horsepower and 500 lb-ft of torque from 1,500 rpm. It weighs 5,329 lbs and runs four seconds flat to 60 mph, 100 mph in 10 seconds, and the quarter-mile in 12.5 seconds at 112 mph. Braking performance—162 feet from 70 mph.

Second Place: Porsche Cayenne Turbo S

The top dog in the Cayenne line-up is powered by a direct-injection, 4.8-liter twin-turbo aluminum V8, outputs 550 horsepower and 553 pound-feet of torque from 2,250 rpm. Runs from 0 to 60 mph in 4.1 seconds, 12.6 at 112 mph in the quarter-mile, 17.8 seconds to 130 mph. Braking performance—158 feet from 70 mph. Weight – 5,305 lbs

Third Place: Jeep Grand Cherokee SRT8

SRT8 uses Chrysler’s 6.1-liter pushrod Hemi, a naturally aspirated engine. It has the lowed horsepower out of the four vehicles tested, 420 and 420 lb-ft of torque from 4,800 rpm. Still to 60 mph is reported in 4.4 seconds, 13.2 at 104 mph in the quarter-mile. Braking performance – 176 feet from 70 mph. Weight – 4,768 lbs.

Fourth Place: Rang Rover Sport Supercharged

The engine of choice is the new supercharged and intercooled 5.0-liter, aluminum V8, the same engine used in the Jaguar XFR sedan. Total horsepower? 510. Torque? 461 lb-ft of torque from 2,500 rpm. It reaches 60 mph in 5.1 seconds, 100 mph in 12.4 seconds, 13.7 seconds at 104 mph in the quarter-mile. Braking performance – 174 feet. Weight – 5,840 lbs, the heaviest in the test.

The full review can be found at Car and Driver and it should make for an interesting read.

After seeing the impressive performance coming from the X6 M SAC, we were looking forward seeing the other “twin” on track and judging by the footage below, it does not disappoint.

The X5 M has size, speed, handling, dynamics and still features little off road capabilities. And the 0-60 mph in only 4.5 seconds…..well, that’s the cherry on the cake. We have to admit that BMW Motorsport division has done their homework with these first M SUVs and we still believe the sale numbers will be more than satisfactory. If the future reviews continue to be positive, Mercedes and Porsche will have a lot to worry about.

For those of you that might not recall, the BMW X5 M and X6 M are powered by a 4.4 liter V8 twin-turbo engine outputting 555 horsepower at 6,000 rpm and 500 lb-ft of torque from 1,500 to 5,650 rpm. The engine uses the twin-scroll twin turbo technology with High Precision Direct Injection.

We’re anxiously waiting for our X5 M and looking forward to the thrill and excitement we’ve encountered while testing the X6 M on track back in July. It was our “first date” with the new Ms and it was a sweet one. Some may call it love on first sight, others may refer to it as “fanboyism”, but truth is that it’s really hard to explain in words the experience behind the wheel and the best thing one can do…. is to actually drive them.

Now if BMW will include them in the M Performance School program, we will make sure to book the first flight out to Spartanburg.

The X6 M seem to impress many people and we have to admit that we’re blown away by the phenomenal performance on 0-60 mph – 4.3 seconds.

But will the X5 M match this performance?

“After driving the 2010 BMW X5 M, there were numerous subtitles for this story bouncing around in our head. Because it was only a handful of years ago, when BMW introduced the 2004 X5 4.8is, that it said, “There will never be an M version of the X5,” we were tempted to write, “Never Say Never.”

One blast down the drag strip in this 555-horsepower breadbox in Monte Carlo Blue had us shouting, “12-second SUV!” If we believed the rumor (and we don’t) that one of the primary reasons for the X5 M’s existence is to satisfy the conspicuously well-funded market among the mobsters in Russia, then we could’ve run with “From Russia With Love.”

Finally, one serene drive home on L.A.’s notoriously poorly constructed freeways where we discovered this X5 M’s ride was far better than that of our long-term 2008 BMW X5 4.8i almost compelled us to put down, “Dr. Jekyll and Mrs. Hyde.”

A New M
It’s not an accident that the newly M-bedazzled X5 has the ability to be both a remarkable performance machine and a completely livable grocery getter. If you had no knowledge of the record-breaking performance potential contained within the X5 M, you’d never know it had a dual personality.

Full Article Continued

P.S. Our own review will soon be available

BMW X5 M is powered by a tuned up 4.4 liter V8 M engine delivering 555 horsepower at 6,000 rpm and 500 lb-ft of torque from 1,500 to 5,650 rpm. The engine uses the twin-scroll twin turbo technology with High Precision Direct Injection.

By positioning the twin-scroll turbochargers together with the catalytic converters in the “V” section between the cylinders, it minimizes the turbo lag and offers better fuel efficiency.

The M X models come equipped with Dynamic Performance Control, special M suspensions and Adaptive Drive, along with a new Servotronic power steering and Active Roll Stabilization system. Other available options are: Head Up Display, Rear View Camera and High Beam Assistant.

BMW X5 M and BMW X6 M run from 0-60 mph in ONLY 4.5 seconds, making the M twins the fastest SUV/SAVs out there.

The 6-speed M Sports Automatic transmission is featured for the first time on a BMW M vehicle. There are two other modes available beside the regular Drive, Sport and M Manual. Gears can be manually shifted through the paddles located on the M steering wheel.

Due to the M Suspension, the BMW X6 M and X5 M are sitting about 0.4 inch lower compared to the regular models. The M twins sit on 20-inch light-allow whels and runflat tires: 275/40 at the front and 315/30 at the rear.

In the U.S., the base price for the BMW X5 M is set at $85,400

Yesterday, the M Power Tour stopped in the beautiful San Francisco where people attending had the opportunity to do a 25-minute street drive in a 2009 BMW M3.

Part of M Power Tour events, BMW will display their first xDrive Motorsport models ever built: the BMW X5 M and X6 M. Courtesy of Rboosted717, a member of Xoutpost, we have some real life photos X5M/X6M photos to share with you. Also, in a conversation with a BMW M specialist, he learned that the X5M/X6M models will have three special colors: red, blue and black, but the standard color pallet will also be available.

The next M Power Tour event will take place this Saturday and Sunday, June 6-7, at the BMW Designworks USA headquarters in Newbury Park, CA.

There is also another thing we would like to share with you. Last month, BMW’s European Delivery desk informed us that for those U.S. customers interested in taking delivery of a BMW at the Welt Center in Munich, they will automatically receive a free M track day behind the X5M/X6M models in Salzburg, Austria.

The first U.S. xDrive M models will be available in October. The BMW X5 M has a base price of $85,400 while the X6 M is priced at $88,900.

With the attention of media mostly focused on the BMW X6 M, the other “brother”, X5 M, slipped unnoticed. The first batch of the photos released yesterday were all about the X6 M, especially since the car was confirmed to make an appearance at the NYC auto show.

As mentioned earlier by us, the BMW X5 M shares the same engine with the X6 M model, a new M twin-turbo engine which uses a common exhaust manifold joining both rows of cylinders, with the turbochargers and catalytic converters placed in the V-section. The result? Less turbo lag and a more direct response.

The BMW X5 M and X6 M are the first Motorsport all-wheel-drive models coming out of the Munich factory gates. We’re not looking at a regular AWD system though, but rather a combination of the Dynamic Performance Control system and the xDrive.

BMW X5 M and the BMW X6 M come as standard with air suspension and self-leveling on the rear axle as well as Adaptive Drive with electronically adjustable dampers and active anti-roll control for higher stability.

Both models feature Bi-xenon dual headlights including a daytime driving light function.

Being a true M model, the BMW X5 M comes equipped with high-performance brakes combined with inner-vented lightweight brake discs. The X5 M sits on 20 inch wheels, which in my opinion, are slightly smaller than we want to.

Moving inside, the design is all about the M brand, starting with M sport seats, M steering wheel, M entry trim and footrest and finishing with a beautiful M shifter.

Same as the X6 M, due to the 555 horsepower coming out of the M engine, the BMW X5 M reaches 60 mph in 4.5 seconds, putting the Porsche Cayenne S on the spot.
