Earlier this month BMW unveiled their first four-door coupe: the 6 Series Gran Coupe. The 6 Series Gran Coupe goes on sale in the U.S. in June 2012 and will be offered as three distinct models: BMW 640i, 650i and 650i xDrive (the latter two launching in late summer 2012).

With a pricing point and dimensions similar to the entry-level 7 Series short wheelbase, the choices for buyers are becoming more interesting. In our opinion, the two vehicles cater to different demographics, but nonetheless, an overlap will occur at some point. Both vehicles are optioned and limited the same way, and the base price will be in the same ballpark.

But let’s have a closer look.

BMW 6 Series Gran Coupe

The 4+1 seat addition to the 6 Series line combines stunning proportions, design and driving dynamics of the 6 Series Coupe with interior room and amenities for up to five passengers. The 6 Series Gran Coupe will cater to buyers looking for a sporty and sleek-looking BMW without sacrificing interior space and storage; think along the line of hipsters with bespoked tailor suits and with a sense of appreciation for luxury and design. We believe the 6 Series Gran Coupe will become a usual presence at valet parking in cities like New York, Los Angeles or Miami.

BMW 7 Series SWB

The longer, but sleeker and muscular new 7 Series came to market in 2009 to correct some of the shortcoming of the previous generation 7 Series. As our own Hugo Becker points out, the 7 Series is a mature sedan and a car for rear passengers. The buyers’ demographic for the 7 Series is also quite different from the 6 Series Coupe and now the new 6 Series Gran Coupe, with your usual driver identified among corporate executives, political dignitaries, A list celebrities, or anyone with money that enjoys the ultimate luxury and sportiness in a BMW.

Dimensions

Now let’s have a look at the dimensions of the two models.

With a length of 197 inches (5,007 mm) and wheelbase of 116.8 inches (2,968 mm), the 6 Series Gran Coupe is 4.4 inches (111 mm) longer than 6 Series Coupe model. The BMW 6 Series Gran Coupe is also 74.6 inches (1,894 mm) wide and stands 54.8 inches (1,392 mm) in height. On the other hand, the BMW 7 Series short wheelbase measures 199.7 in (5,072 mm) in length, 74.9 in (1,902 mm) width and has a height of 58.2 in (1,479 mm). The 7 Series SWB has a wheelbase of 120.9 inches.

Both models are nearly identical in width and separated by 2 inches in length, with the dimensions advantage clearly going to the 7 Series.

The longer wheelbase gives the 7 Series more rear room for passengers, as well as a bigger trunk space.

Pricing

The entry-level 740i model starts in the U.S. at $71,000. The 640i Coupe went on sale this Fall with an MSRP of $73,600. BMW has yet to reveal the pricing for the 6 Series Gran Coupe, but we anticipate the base price for the 640i GC to fall between $75,000 and $79,000.

With all these facts in front of you, which one would you buy: BMW 640i Gran Coupe or the 74oi SWB?

Introducing the BMW 6 Series Gran Coupe – a new 4-door, 4+1 seat addition to the 6 Series line that successfully combines the stunning proportions, design and driving dynamics of the 6 Series Coupe with interior room and amenities for up to five passengers. Harmonious proportions, precise lines and sleekly contoured surfaces give the BMW 6 Series Gran Coupe the unique ability to satisfy the driver who wants a luxurious and sporty coupe yet needs a car capable of carrying four adults in comfort and luxury.

The BMW 6 Series Gran Coupe will be offered as three distinct models in the USA. The TwinPower Turbo 6-cylinder powered 2013 BMW 640i Gran Coupe is the initial model and arrives early this summer. Later in the summer, the TwinPower Turbo V-8 powered 2013 BMW 650i Gran Coupe and the all-wheel drive 2013 BMW 650i xDrive Gran Coupe will join the range.

Sporting a length of 197 inches (5,007 mm) and wheelbase of 116.8 inches (2,968 mm), the Gran Coupe is 4.4 inches (111 mm) longer than its 2-door coupe sibling. A significant part of this extra length has been used to enhance seating comfort for the rear passengers. The BMW 6 Series Gran Coupe is also 74.6 inches (1,894 mm) wide and stands 54.8 inches (1,392 mm) in height. For comparison purposes, the Gran Coupe is 4.0 inches (102mm) longer, 1.3 inches (34mm) wider and 2.8 inches (72mm) lower than the BMW 550i.

The BMW 6 Series Gran Coupe, in keeping with the tradition of the 6 Series Coupe, offers a unique combination of top-class sporting dynamics, stunning design, luxurious touring comfort and a 16.24 cu. ft (460-liter) DIN luggage compartment – now for four passengers. The BMW 6 Series Gran Coupe’s signature driving experience is complimented by a range of innovative driver assistance systems and BMW ConnectedDrive infotainment features. The new car therefore meets the highest expectations of driving pleasure and style in a large, premium 4-seat sports coupe.

Its unmistakable design language gives the new BMW 6 Series Gran Coupe an aura of athletic elegance. The long powerfully contoured hood, short front overhang and set-back passenger compartment team up with a 4.4 inch (111 mm) increase in body length over the 6 Series Coupe and a 4.5 inch (113 mm) longer wheelbase present a fresh take on the hallmark proportions of a BMW automobile. The Gran Coupe’s distinctive profile is dominated by its four-door, elegantly stretched roof line which flows smoothly into the rear end, is a similarly eye-catching and distinctive feature of the new model’s silhouette.

The innovations in the new BMW 6 Series Gran Coupe also extend to lighting technology, in the shape of optional Adaptive LED Headlights. Their bright white light provides an extremely intense and evenly spread illumination of the road. This technology is unparalleled in the segment and also allows the beam of the headlights to follow the curves of the road.

Other features that set the new car apart from its rivals are the BMW ConnectedDrive driver assistance systems and mobility services. The rear-view camera, Surround View, Parking Assistant, BMW Night Vision with pedestrian recognition, Lane Departure Warning System and Active Blind Spot Detection are joined on the list of available equipment items by the new generation of the BMW Head-Up-Display. The latest incarnation of the system uses a full spectrum of colors to display the information projected onto the windshield. The standard BMW iDrive control system is the operating portal for the navigation, communications and infotainment functions. The high definition, trans-reflective technology Control Display is centrally mounted high on the sweeping dash and emulates a freestanding flatscreen. Finally, the optional Bang & Olufsen High-End Surround Sound System provides a feast of aural pleasure seldom experienced inside a car.

The BMW 640i Gran Coupe arrives in US BMW Centers early this summer and will be followed by the 650i Gran Coupe and 650i xDrive Gran Coupe in late summer. Retail and option pricing will be announced closer to the on-sale date.

Upgraded TwinPower Turbo 6-Cylinder powers the 640i Gran Coupe.

The inline 6-cylinder engine (N55HP) in the new BMW 640i Gran Coupe will impress performance-minded drivers with its effortless power, exceptionally fast-revving temperament, outstanding refinement and exceptional fuel efficiency. The N55 has been setting standards from the start, as the pioneer of a new generation of engines in which BMW TwinPower Turbo technology with High Precision Direct Injection and VALVETRONIC variable valve timing plus a twin scroll turbo made its debut.

Thanks to intensive fine-tuning of the engine, BMW’s engineers have managed to extract additional performance from the engine while maintaining its exceptional fuel efficiency. With a maximum power rating of 225 kW/315 hp at 5,800 to 6,000 rpm, the 3.0-liter 6-cylinder engine reflects the sporty personality of the BMW 640i Gran Coupe and helps this automobile deliver brilliant performance. The high peak torque of 330 lb-ft, on stream between 1,300 and 4,500 rpm, ensures that the power is effortlessly and instantly delivered.

As a result, the 640i Gran Coupe can show off its prowess with a 0 to 62 mph (0-100km/h) sprint time of just 5.4 seconds. Top speed is electronically governed at 155 mph (250 km/h). All this extra performance comes with exceptional fuel economy and low emission figures. Fuel consumption in the EU test cycle is rated at 7.8 l/100km (30.1 mpg). EPA fuel economy ratings will be available closer to the on-sale date in the USA.

BMW’s widely lauded TwinPower Turbo V-8 engine is updated with more performance and more efficiency in the 650i Gran Coupe.

The 4.4-liter V-8 engine (N63) that powers the current 650i models receives an upgrade for the new 650i Gran Coupe. The unique “reverse-flow” engine, whose two turbochargers are positioned in the V-area between the cylinder banks is well known for producing an instantaneous and sustained wave of power, making it a delight for the enthusiast driver. This new version of the engine adds BMW’s VALVETRONIC variable valve timing to the list of specifications. As a result, the new version of the engine (N63Tü) develops a maximum 445 hp between 5,500 and 6,000 rpm (a 45 hp increase), and makes peak torque of 480 lb-ft between 2,000 and 4,500 rpm (a 30 lbs-ft increase).

The new BMW 650i Gran Coupe completes the sprint from 0 to 62 mph (0 to 100km/h) in 4.6 seconds. Top speed is electronically limited to 155 mph. This engine also boasts extraordinary efficiency for a model in its output class. Its average fuel consumption lies between 8.6 and 8.8 l/100km (26.7-27.3 mpg), (provisional figures according to EU test cycle depending on tire options). EPA fuel economy ratings will be available closer to the on-sale date in summer 2012.

When the V8 is combined with the xDrive intelligent all-wheel-drive system, its power is converted into even more intense and dynamic acceleration. The electronically controlled power split between the front and rear wheels optimizes not only traction and stability, whatever the weather and road surface conditions may be, but also the agility of the Gran Coupe 650i xDrive Gran Coupe, whose sprint time from 0 to 100 km/h (62 mph) is just 4.5 seconds.

8-speed Sport Automatic Transmission.

The 8-speed Sport Automatic transmission in the new BMW 6 Series Gran Coupe boasts a perfect combination of speed, flexibility, sportiness, and efficiency. What sets it apart are its minimal torque converter slip and rapid gear changes. An innovative gear set configuration allows this transmission to offer eight gears, maximizing acceleration at any road speed, yet allowing the driver to conserve fuel by cruising at low revs. Befitting the Gran Coupe’s sporting character, the driver can choose to select gears manually via shift paddles on the standard Sport leather steering wheel.

In addition to the efficiency of the engine and 8-speed Sport Automatic transmission, an extensive range of BMW EfficientDynamics measures contribute to reducing fuel consumption and emissions. Brake Energy Regeneration, engine Auto Start-Stop, on-demand operation of ancillary components, intelligent lightweight construction and extensive aerodynamic refinement collaborate to ensure maximum efficiency.

Chassis Management and optional Integral Active Steering.

Cutting-edge chassis technology gives the new BMW 6 Series Gran Coupe the tools to provide both sporty handling and exceptional comfort. The double wishbone front axle and the multi-link rear axle are made predominantly from aluminum. The chassis is geared to the requirements of drivers with sporting intentions, although the dampers also respond sensitively to bumps in the road surface under high lateral acceleration. The optional Active Roll Stabilization combines with the standard Dynamic Damper Control to offer the driver even more precise responses and perfectly flat cornering ability. The electronically controlled shock absorbers adapt to the road surface and the driver’s style to perfectly control the car’s body motions.

The electronically controlled damper system in the new BMW 6 Series Gran Coupe adjusts compression and rebound settings continuously and independently. For example, a stiff chassis setting can be combined with comfortable responses to unevenness in the road surface. The control unit of the damping system processes the data supplied by sensors on the vertical motion of the wheels as well as the ride height of the car. The driving speed and the damper setting chosen by the driver are also taken into account in calculating the damping force required for each individual wheel to even out body movements. This data is fed back to the shock-absorber units at intervals of just 2.5 milliseconds.

The optional Active Roll Stabilization feature reduces body roll in corners and in sudden changes of direction, or transitions. Sensors calculate the amount of body roll based on the driving situation at hand, and this is then counteracted quickly and precisely by hydraulic rotary actuators in the front and rear anti-roll bars. The result is flatter cornering inspiring greater confidence for the driver as well as greater comfort for the passengers during spirited drives. The power steering features standard Servotronic vehicle-speed sensitive assistance, and serves up the familiar BMW recipe of precision, comfort and linear response.

The Gran Coupe is also available with Integral Active Steering. This system (also available on the 6 Series Coupe and Convertible) combines the Active Steering system for the front axle with a steerable rear axle. Precisely harmonized steering angle movements at both axles create a virtual lengthening or shortening of the vehicle’s wheelbase, which fosters both greater high-speed stability and enhanced maneuverability for parking and city use.

Brakes, Wheels, and Tires.

The lightweight floating-caliper brakes feature vented discs and Dynamic Stability Control. DSC brings together technology such as the Anti-lock Braking System, Dynamic Traction Control, Cornering Brake Control, Dynamic Brake Control, the Start-off Assistant, the automatic Brake Drying function and Brake Fade Compensation. Standard equipment also includes 8.0 x18-inch light-alloy wheels, with all-season runflat tires (size 245/45 R18) and a tire pressure monitoring system.

Driving Dynamics Control with ECO PRO mode:
Extra-sporty to the most fuel-efficient driving modes – at the press of a button.

The new 6 Series Gran Coupe offers impressive driving dynamics combined with new standards of comfort in the premium segment. This is a result of superbly tuned suspension which achieves an astonishing balance between dynamics and comfort. On top of this, drivers are also able to vary the overall character of the car depending on the driving situation or to suit their personal preferences. As well as sportier or more comfortable drive settings, they can also opt for extra fuel efficiency. The different modes are selected using the new Driving Dynamics Control function including ECO PRO mode, which is standard on all 6 Series models. The driver can choose settings of COMFORT+, COMFORT, SPORT, SPORT+ and ECO PRO modes using the large rocker switch on the center console. Affected parameters include the tuning of the throttle response, power steering boost assistance, shock absorbers, automatic transmission shift characteristics and – if equipped – roll stabilization and Integral Active Steering. In SPORT+ mode, the Dynamic Traction Control mode of the standard Dynamic Stability Control system is activated, raising the thresholds for stability intervention in the most sport-oriented driving circumstances.

The new ECO PRO mode, meanwhile, supports an extra-efficient and economy-conscious driving style. It does this by changing the accelerator mapping so that the same pedal travel delivers less power than in the standard mode. Also in this mode, the automatic transmission control strategy is modified so as to upshift sooner and to delay downshifts, while intelligent energy and climate management reduces the mechanical power consumption and also the consumption of electrical systems such as heated mirrors and seats. But the biggest potential for improving fuel economy comes from the driver’s own personal driving habits. Special displays in the instrument cluster let the driver know by how much the driving range is being extended, show fuel consumption history, or, with reference to the specific driving situation, provide tips and incentives on how to develop a more economy-conscious driving style. ECO PRO mode allows average fuel consumption to be reduced by up to 20%, with a corresponding increase in driving range.

Design: Athletic elegance, natural sportiness.

The new BMW 6 Series Gran Coupe again heralds the arrival of an exceptionally sporty and exclusive 4-seater in the premium coupe segment. The new model’s extra length and width over its 2 door model combine with its low height (2.8 inches lower than a 5 Series) to produce a strikingly low-set and powerful design. This new interpretation of the traditional BMW Coupe proportions is embellished by lines and surfaces inspired by the movement of waves. Flowing lines and harmonious curves create a feeling of athletic grace which underline the opulent character and elegant appearance of the four-door BMW.

The expressive front end is dominated by the large and slightly forward-slanting BMW kidney grille. The grille emphasizes the car’s sporting pedigree with a broad, flat design, and creates a visual connection with the engine nestling behind. The kidney grille slats, angled slightly towards the top, lend additional emphasis to the front end’s “shark nose” character. The contour lines of the hood converge towards the kidney grille, forming a V-shape which is continued by the contours of the headlights, kidney and wide air intake to give a road-focused look.

Powerfully flared wheel arches and the LED foglamps, placed well to the outside, accentuate the width of the front end. The lower air intake is split into three sections by model-specific L-shaped electroplated bars, which pick up the contours of the hood lines and BMW kidney grille to add extra intensity to the road-focused stance of the front end.

High-visibility innovation: Adaptive LED Headlights.

The new Gran Coupe is equipped with Adaptive Xenon headlights as standard. An accentuating trim element cuts across the top of the hallmark BMW twin round headlights to produce the purposeful look familiar from other BMW models. The optional Adaptive LED Headlights provide a fresh take on this established feature. The Adaptive LED Headlights for low beam and high beam contain LED light rings for the parking lights and daytime running lights, which are flattened on the lower edge and overlapped at their top edge by an accent light – also featuring LEDs. The result is a stunning, distinctively BMW showcase for the innovative light technology. In addition, they also generate the low beam and high beam light from the two light rings. The light sources are horizontal LED ribs positioned in the center of the light rings. The brand’s hallmark twin round headlight look is therefore expressed even more strikingly – not only with the daytime running lights switched on, but also when the headlights are activated in the dark.

However, the Adaptive LED Headlights are about more than just looking good; they also ensure the driver has optimum visibility. Their bright white light provides a bright and even illumination of the road ahead. From a color perspective, the light comes much closer to natural daylight than that created by conventional halogen or xenon headlights, lending even reflective objects far greater contrast. The cornering element of the Adaptive LED Headlights is also tailored to the car’s speed, steering angle and yaw rate, allowing the pivot of the headlights to adapt automatically to the line of the corner. Meanwhile, a light source positioned specially in the headlight housing generates the cornering light which, at low speeds, ensures illumination of the road surface in the direction the car is turning. LED technology is also deployed for the turn signal indicators, each of which consists of eight LED units arranged in a row underneath the light rings. As well as enhancing visibility in the dark, the Adaptive LED Headlights also significantly improve the signaling effect of the car’s lights.

Side view: Elegant roofline, powerfully curved surfaces.

With its long, powerfully contoured hood, set-back passenger compartment, long wheelbase and short overhangs, the BMW 6 Series Gran Coupe presents a fresh take on the hallmark BMW proportions. The Gran Coupe’s distinctive appearance is dominated by its four-door layout, longer wheelbase than other BMW 6 Series models and likewise longer passenger compartment. The low, elegantly stretched roof line, which flows smoothly into the rear end, is a similarly eye-catching and distinctive feature of the new model’s silhouette.

The combination of sportiness, style and luxury is particularly clear when viewed from the side. Longer side window surfaces than those found on the two-door BMW 6 Series models hint at the extra space available in the rear compartment. Side windows extending far back into the C-pillar give the passenger compartment the low-slung, stretched look typical of Coupes. The more generous greenhouse also allow light to flood the interior, further enhancing the feeling of space inside and all-round visibility for the rear passengers. High-quality Chrome Line Exterior surrounds for the side windows complement the coupe style window line. The hallmark BMW Hofmeister kink at the transition to the C-pillar is given an extra touch of style in the form of etched “Gran Coupe” model lettering set against a sporty texture in the rear section of the side window.

Powerfully flowing surfaces – which open out as they extend back from the front end and stretch over the full length of the body before feeding into the muscular rear end – give the BMW 6 Series Gran Coupe a naturally sporty look. The character line streaming out from the gill on the front wheel arch takes in the door handle and runs the full length of the car, emphasizing the athletic elegance of its side view. Around the rear wheels, the surfaces below the character line push outwards, enhancing the impression of a powerful car with a strong, assured stance on the road. Plus, the light surfaces generated above the rear wheel arches draw further attention to the wide track and the power being channelled through the rear wheels.

Another character line, emerging from the curvature of the front wheel arch, drops down between the gill feature and the door, before levelling out and extending horizontally to the rear. The unbroken shadow surface above the side sill emphasises the car’s muscular stance from the side.

The rear-end design: horizontal lines and clean surfaces.

Clearly structured surfaces and horizontal lines add further presence to the car’s powerful rear end, which acts as a pointer to the BMW 6 Series Gran Coupe’s impressive roadholding and the sporting nature of the vehicle concept as a whole. The lines of the rear end become noticeably broader as they blend into the wheel arches bulge. All of which gives the rear view an extremely low visual center of gravity. The conspicuously flared wheel arches spotlight the car’s wide track and underline the horizontally structured character of the rear. The trunk lid and rear fascia both have flatter surfacing than their counterparts on the other BMW 6 Series models. The more clearly sculpted sill emphasises the overall volume of the rear end and brings striking details such as the rear lights and exhaust tailpipes more clearly into view.

The two-part, L-shaped rear lights share the contours of the car’s BMW 6 Series siblings and each use a pair of LED light strips to generate the distinctive night-time look of a BMW. The third brake light is integrated into the roof and stretches the full length of the rear window.

Interior with BMW’s traditional driver-oriented cockpit.

The interior of the BMW 6 Series Gran Coupe reveals the driver-focused cockpit design typical of the brand and a luxurious ambience for all those on board. The central section of the instrument panel is angled slightly towards the driver and the gear selector for the automatic gearbox, the Driving Experience Control switch and the activation button for the parking brake are all positioned on the surface of the center console which opens out towards the driver.

The standard Navigation System Professional and iDrive operating system come with 10.2-inch high definition display bordered by a galvanised chrome surround.

Long horizontal lines extending all the way through the interior of the
BMW 6 Series Gran Coupe create a visual link with the second row of seats, emphasising the size of the interior. The elegant lines of the door trim, familiar from the other BMW 6 Series models, continue into the rear compartment, incorporating the B-pillar as a design element along the way. The sweeping design of the door panels flows harmoniously from the front doors via the B-pillars to the rear doors. The center console also stretches through to the rear. Precise contours help to create an intriguing contrast with the interior’s soft, curvaceous surfaces, producing a vibrant and dynamic collage of forms.

The waistline surfaces of the doors form a subtly dynamic wedge shape, which extends into the luggage compartment cover. The dynamic character of the door surface design generates a feeling of depth which envelops the passengers in their seats, while the interplay of convex and concave surfaces evokes a sense of exclusive security.

Sporting Character and generous rear space.

The interior of the BMW 6 Series Gran Coupe offers a driving experience defined by sportiness and luxury, and enhanced by a specially generated ambience. The line of the roof pillars reproduces the car’s arching roof form inside the car. In the rear compartment, the enveloping interior typical of a Coupe and comfortable seats offer excellent lateral support combined with generous freedom of movement and good visibility out of the car.

Its interior offers individually tailored seats for the driver, front passenger and rear passengers. High-quality materials, carefully coordinated colors and meticulously sculpted surfaces combine to produce an ambience defined by luxury, sweeping style and Teutonic functionality. A hallmark BMW element of the interior design is the driver-oriented cockpit layout. The central section of the instrument panel, containing the iDrive system’s Central Display, the air vents and the controls for the audio system and air conditioning, are all angled slightly towards the driver. Added to which, the gearshift lever and the switches for the parking brake and Driving Dynamics Control are located on a surface that opens out towards the driver and is set lower than the front passenger side of the center console.

The front passenger area is bordered by a surface curving elegantly from the armrest over the side edge of the center console, upwards and outwards into the instrument panel and then horizontally into the door trim. This provides a harmonious surround for the front passenger area, creating a feeling of exclusive security. The contour of the rear waistline surface, which extends slightly into the interior between the head restraints, highlights the individual seat layout of the rear.

The black-panel instrument cluster of the Gran Coupe combines the traditional sports car circular instruments with state-of-the-art display technology. The Navigation system, telephone and entertainment functions are operated using the iDrive control system, whose Central Display boasts an innovative design. The on-board monitor takes the form of a freestanding display with a flatscreen look. The high definition display measures 10.2 inches across and features a high-quality galvanized chrome surround. The shallow depth of the display gives it a modern character. Trans-reflective technology ensures the display remains easy-to-read in bright sunlight. The new arrangement of the Central Display – which now reaches further into the passenger compartment –influences the architecture of the instrument panel, which rises steeply in front of the driver and front passenger. This impression is further enhanced by the structure of the door trim panels. Their surfaces have a powerfully taut look and, like the black waistline surface, pull in and rise up to create a smooth transition into the instrument panel, giving the interior the effect of wrapping around the driver and front passenger.

The optional Luxury Seating Package adds ventilated multi-contour, active seats, sunshades on both the rear side and rear windows and a four zone climate control system with additional controls located between the rear seats. While the Gran Coupe is primarily designed as a four seater, a fifth person can be accommodated in the rear compartment.

The BMW 6 Series Gran Coupe can be ordered in a choice of nine metallic exterior paint shades and three non-metallic colors. Other exclusive paint finishes are available as part of the BMW Individual range and in conjunction with the M Sport package. The colors and materials available for the interior, meanwhile, have been selected to enhance the feeling of elegant sportiness and luxury, and can be tailored to the customer’s personal style. The standard Dakota leather can be ordered in a choice of three colors, the optional Exclusive Nappa leather is available in four different shades and extended Merino leather is available in five varieties (in combination with the Individual Composition or M Sport Packages). The instrument panel, door trim and center console are also finished in Nappa leather with contrasting stitching when the Nappa Leather option is selected. Customers can also choose from four interior trim variants and optional ceramic applications for the gear selector, iDrive Controller and other controls. Additional exclusive trims are available as part of the BMW Individual range and in conjunction with the M Sport package.

M Sport package and BMW Individual range available from launch.

An M Sport package developed specially for the BMW 6 Series Gran Coupe is available from the launch of the new car. Among the features included are an M aerodynamics package with uniquely designed front fascia, side skirts and rear fascia. The M Sport package also includes exhaust tips in black chrome, black-painted brake callipers, LED foglamps, a sports exhaust system for the BMW 650i Gran Coupe and 19-inch light-alloy wheels in M double-spoke design. 20-inch light-alloy wheels in M double-spoke design are also available as a package upgrade. Customers ordering the M Sport package may also opt for the M paint finishes Carbon Black metallic and Imola Red non-metallic.

The sporting theme continues inside the car in the form of special M Alcantara/leather sports seats with blue contrast stitching, an M leather steering wheel with multifunction buttons and gearshift paddles, and aluminium hexagon interior trim. Plus, the M Sport package adds door sill finishers sporting the M logo and an M driver’s footrest to the mix.

Also available from launch is the BMW Individual range of products, which allows customers to tailor the exterior and interior of their BMW 6 Series Gran Coupe precisely and exclusively to their personal style. The four BMW Individual paint shades are joined in the range by BMW Individual special paint finishes and a selection of matt paint finishes. For example, the BMW Individual matt finish Frozen Bronze metallic is available exclusively for the BMW 6 Series Gran Coupe. BMW Individual light-alloy wheels in V-spoke design can be specified in 19 and 20-inch format. Those looking to give the interior of their car a particularly exclusive aura, meanwhile, may like to add BMW Individual fine-grain Merino full leather trim, an Alcantara BMW Individual roof liner, BMW Individual interior strips and the BMW Individual wood inlay for the steering wheel.

One of the highlights of the BMW Individual range of interior options is the Opal White full-leather trim specially developed for the BMW 6 Series Gran Coupe, combined with the interior color Amaro Brown. Here, the leather-covered instrument panel and Alcantara BMW Individual roof liner are also presented in Amaro Brown. The selection of materials, combinations of colors and a quality of workmanship showcase the exclusive character of the BMW Individual range. White contrast stitching for the instrument panel, armrest and door trim match the Opal White seats and door panels, while Amaro Brown seat stitching and piping complements the effect on the seats and door panels. In addition, BMW Individual Ash Grain White fine wood trim adds a particularly high-quality touch to the interior and fits in seamlessly with the overall color concept.

All the items in the BMW Individual range can also be ordered as individual options. And the BMW 6 Series Gran Coupe is also available with a BMW Individual composition of products in a perfectly judged combination of colors and materials.

New lightweight technology, comprehensive safety equipment.

The new BMW Gran Coupe is fitted with newly developed lightweight seats with an integrated seatbelt system and standard 20-way multi-contour adjustability and adjustable lumbar support. Optionally, the Luxury Seating Package adds front multi-Contour ventilated seats and active fatigue reduction feature. All seat variants come with crash-activated anti-whiplash head restraints.

The range of standard safety equipment also includes front airbags, head-thorax side airbags integrated into the seat frame, three-point automatic belts for all seats, belt force limiters and front belt pre-tensioners and ISOFIX child seat mounts in the rear.

Carefully researched advances in materials and development of the car’s load-bearing structure have significantly enhanced the body’s construction in terms of the agility and safety it offers. In the interests of perfect balance, the doors, hood and front spring mounts are all aluminum, while the front fenders and trunklid are made from reinforced composite.

Cutting-edge features from BMW ConnectedDrive.

The new BMW 650i Coupe is available with a great variety of driver assistance systems and mobility services from BMW ConnectedDrive. The comprehensive Driver Assistance Package includes Lane Departure Warning, Active Blind Spot Detection, Rear and Top View cameras, Parking Assistant, and the new three-dimensional, full-color Head-Up Display that premiered in the 6 Series Convertible last year. Also available are BMW’s Night Vision with Pedestrian Detection and Active Cruise Control with stop-and-go capability.

HiFi stereo system.

The standard HiFi audio system in the new Gran Coupe comes with an HD Radio receiver, MP3-compatible CD drive, AUX-IN connection, and a HiFi loudspeaker system with nine speakers. The available Premium Sound Package adds SiriusXM satellite radio with a 1-year subscription, iPod and USB adapter, and the Premium HiFi system comprised of 12 loudspeakers and a digital amplifier. It features DIRAC signal processing and model-specific equalizing.

Bang & Olufsen High-End Surround Sound System delivers an unparalleled audio experience.

When it comes to delivering audio pleasure of the highest order, the Bang & Olufsen High-End Surround Sound System designed especially for the new BMW 6 Series Gran Coupe hits all the right notes. Jointly developed by the Danish audio specialists and BMW, this system produces an exceptionally natural sound from 16 speakers distributed around the cabin. It is a fully active system featuring digital signal processing, which means the two bass speakers, seven mid-range speakers and seven tweeters all have individual amplifiers. This technology enables the targeted modification of any sound reflections inside the vehicle. The Bang & Olufsen High-End Surround Sound System uses Dirac Dimensions™ technology to recreate the acoustics of a reference listening room in the passenger compartment. All vehicle occupants therefore enjoy the same high-quality sound stage wherever they are sitting.

The electrical signals are converted into precisely defined sound waves using neodymium magnet drivers, and the mid-range speakers feature extremely stiff Hexacone diaphragms. The outstanding quality of the Bang & Olufsen High-End Surround Sound System is underlined by exclusive design features. The form and color of the advanced all-aluminum speaker grilles have been tailored precisely to the interior design of the new Gran Coupe. The special perforation pattern of the grilles is created using a very sophisticated drilling technique. The grille mounts are not visible from the outside, ensuring that the grilles stand out from their surroundings by appearing to float in a slightly raised position above the surface. This exclusive ambience is further enhanced by a discreet lighting effect, which showcases the contours of the sound sources with a subtly impressive effect. The B&O Acoustic Lens Technology element in the center of the instrument panel area adds both a visual feature and is an acoustic innovation. As soon as the audio system is activated, the central element containing the integrated mid-range speaker pops up, prompting the tweeter lens to be extended at the same time. The tweeter lens distributes its signals evenly at 180 degrees throughout the interior. This extraordinarily harmonious horizontal dispersion of sound is achieved through the special design of the lens, which also minimizes unwanted vertical sound dispersion.

Industry leading new-generation Head-Up Display.

The new BMW 6 Series Gran Coupe can be equipped with the most advanced Head-Up Display system in the premium segment. By projecting important information onto the windshield, directly in the driver’s line of sight, the Head-Up Display minimizes distraction from the road and traffic. This latest-generation system brings a further improvement in display quality: the symbols are projected as three-dimensional graphics and in ultra-clear resolution onto the windshield. Full-color capability makes the road sign symbols even more realistic. At the same time the Head-Up Display is now able to present a wider range of information. Depending on vehicle specification, guidance information supplied by the Navigation system, Check Control messages, status messages from the Lane Departure Warning System and warnings from the BMW Night Vision system can all be shown in the Head-Up Display. The positioning of the messages on the windshield is highly ergonomic, so that drivers are aware of them without having to refocus or take their eyes off the road.

The intensity of the projection automatically adjusts to the ambient light level, and the brightness setting can be adjusted via the iDrive menu. The driver can also choose what information will appear in the Head-Up Display in addition to road speed and warnings from the driver assistance systems.

Rear-View, Top View, and Side View Cameras.

To supplement the standard Park Distance Control, which uses ultrasonic sensors to monitor distance from objects in front or behind, the Gran Coupe also features a standard rear-view camera. The camera is integrated in the trunklid under the BMW “roundel” badge, which protects it from dirt. When the rear-view camera is activated, the roundel badge pivots up out of the way to expose the camera lens. The perspective-corrected color images are relayed to the Central Display. Superimposed on the images are interactive tracking lines which indicate the optimal steering angle for parking, as well as the tightest turning circle.

The optional Top View system with Side View provides an even more comprehensive picture. In addition to the rear-view camera and the PDC sensors, this system also uses a fish-eye camera in each of the side mirrors. The data acquired by Top View is relayed to a central computer which generates a bird’s eye view of both vehicle and surroundings and presents the image in the Central Display. This view allows the driver to maneuver precisely in confined spaces.

The Side View function uses two cameras integrated in the front fenders to provide an improved view of cross-traffic at speeds below 10mph. These images are relayed to the Central Display where they may give the driver an early idea of what is happening on the road to the left and right of the car when pulling out from narrow and concealed gateways or car park exits.

The BMW 6 Series Gran Coupe: Production in Dingolfing, Germany.

The new BMW 6 Series Gran Coupe is built alongside its other 6 Series siblings at the BMW plant in Dingolfing, Germany. Also rolling off the assembly line at the BMW Group’s largest production plant are the BMW 7 Series and BMW 5 Series models. The flexible and efficient processes at the plant combine state-of-the-art production technology with a standard of quality defined by meticulous craftsmanship in the manufacture of premium cars configured to customer order and satisfaction.

Back in August, BMWBLOG reviewed the all-new 2012 BMW 650i Coupe. Through the back roads from Pebble Beach to San Francisco, we put the new 6er Coupe through some intensive driving and it has not disappointed. But not only the driving dynamics impressed us, we quickly fell in love with the sporty and fluid design, as well as with the high-fidelity Bang & Olufsen audio system.

Without any further ado, let’s find out what Car and Driver thinks of the premium coupe. And yes, they had the same complaint as us: electric power-steering and its lack of feedback and engagement.

How Does It Drive?

Like a big teddy bear or angry grizzly; the choice between ease and evil is yours. Toggle the Driving Dynamics Control button through Comfort+, Comfort, Sport, and Sport+ settings and the car will grant your wish. In the Comfort modes, the suspension, throttle, transmission program, and steering are relaxed enough for country clubbers, while the Sport selections tighten those same elements, granting the 650i a surprisingly athletic feel. And when we say “athletic,” we aren’t talking amateur status.

We must fault the electric power-steering system for its lack of feedback, but there’s no denying the car’s capabilities. On the skidpad, the tail-happy coupe achieved a commendable 0.93 g of stick and demonstrated excellent body control. Its Dunlop SP SportMax tires also contributed to an outstanding performance in the 70–0 mph braking exercise, stopping the beefy Bimmer in just 158 feet. The brake pedal offered good feedback, and the binders showed no signs of fade. Five back-to-back stops only varied by four feet. Those numbers are reassuring when you’re driving something that’ll hit 60 mph in just 4.5 seconds, 100 mph in 10.4 clicks, and cover a quarter-mile in 12.9 seconds at 112 mph.

How Does It Stack Up?

In the big-luxury-coupe corner, there aren’t many contenders these days and the bag is a bit mixed. The Jaguar XK starts at about the same price as the 650i, and it, too, offers desirable sheetmetal, a well-appointed interior, and a similar luxury/sport ride-and-handling combo. But the 6-series betters the XK at almost every mark in the performance ring, has a usable back seat—it’s still cramped for full-size adults—a superior interior layout, and a more intuitive infotainment system. Then there’s the Mercedes-Benz CL550, which is only available with all-wheel drive, an option on the 650. While the CL550 is even larger, more powerful, and quicker in a straight line than the 6er, the additional size and slight performance advantage comes at a steep cost. The CL starts at just under $115K compared to the 650i’s $83,875 base. But, if back-seat comfort is a priority, the CL trumps the 6 hands-down.”

Even though the 6er Coupe isn’t due out until later this year, BMW has already begun testing the M Sport package for the new high-end coupe and previous spy photos revealed some design cues for the M Sport bumper with the typical aggressive and imposing design characteristic to all the M Sport package.

The leaked image shows an M-Sport Package with the usual large air intakes and a set of LED foglights to compliment the full LED lights treatment received by the 6er Coupe.

BMW’s line of M Sports Package upgrades typically include exterior modifications to give a sharper, sportier appearance, along with interior upgrades that enhance the sportier look and feel.

Inside, the package should include an M shifter, M steering wheel and M footrest, an anthracite BMW Individual roof lining and M aluminum hexagon interior trim strips. Carbon fiber trim is usually included in the package as well.

As we announced back in March, the new BMW 6 Series Coupe will make its world debut at the upcoming New York and Shanghai auto shows. Along with the new premiere, BMW of North America will also introduce the first US-bound BMW to receive the new 4-cylinder TwinPower N20 engine.

No clues have been given at the moment, but as we said in the past, we expect the BMW Z4 sDrive30i to first receive the new engine, followed in the summer by the BMW 528i when the xDrive will be available as well. Both vehicles are currently equipped with the six-cylinder naturally aspirated engine, one of the last of its kind in the BMW lineup.

The star of the show for BMW will be the 2012 BMW 6 Series Coupe which launches this fall with the V8 turbocharged engine. The BMW 650i Coupe will be followed by other offerings in the high-end coupe class.

With the new BMW 6 Series, BMW has another opportunity to outline the new design language under chief designer Adrian Van Hooydonk. Escaping from the sometimes radical and adventurous Bangle design, the new 6er Coupe is an evolution of the previous model, but its design lines continue to emit a strong presence.

The F12 6 Series Coupe comes to emphasize this new design language at BMW which started in 2009 with the E89 Z4, followed shortly by the F01/F02 7 Series and last year’s big seller, F10 5 Series. The high-end Coupe features shorter rear deck and a dramatic slope of the rear light, along with perfect proportions. The road presence is impressive and it aims to stand out amongst the crowd.

The unique shape of the headlights are inspired from the Gran Coupe Concept, the four-door coupe that will come next year to further expand the flagship offerings from BMW. The L-shape taillights continue to remain a BMW icon and the full LED treatment bring out the luxury and sportiness from the new 6.

Pricing is also expected to be announced next on April 20th at the NYC Auto Show. As always, stay tuned for exclusive coverage from the event, and for a couple more surprises at the BMW stand.

Ahead of its world premiere at the 2011 Shanghai Auto Show, the new 2012 BMW 6 Series Coupe was presented to selected journalists in Munich. Our friend Damon Lavrinc of Autoblog, gets an early sneak peek at the new 6 Series Coupe and the car is just as stunning as in the official photos.

The 2012 BMW 6 Series Coupe goes on sale this Fall and at launch it will be available in the 650i and 640i models. The U.S market will initially receive the flagship 650i. In Europe, BMW is expected to also launch a diesel version of the 6er, most likely the 635d. The M-Sport package will also be offered at launch time.

A recent design analysis by our Hugo Becker says that “the 6er coupe, in this author’s estimation, is better looking than the drop-head version. Frankly the shorter rear deck and the dramatic slope of the rear light, are the reason it appeals more to this writer’s eye. The proportions seem perfect on the 6er coupe.

The addition of a horizontal character line that defines the rear spoiler and runs through into the C-pillar is another nice touch. And that line is picked up in parallel by the horizontal line that runs along the top of the rear bumper back into the rear wheel well area.”

BMW announced that the 640i coupe will cost 74,700 euros in Germany. US pricing for the 650i Coupe is rumored to start at around $90,000.

Stay tuned in the next day for more exclusive news from Munich!

In the press release available at the time of web unveiling, BMW introduced the new 6er with only two engine configuration: the 320 horsepower BMW 640i and the 407 horsepower BMW 650i, the top model in the range. At the time, no word on whether BMW will offer an all-wheel-drive variant or when the diesel and M-Sport packages will be available.

According to a reliable source close to BimmerToday, in the upcoming weeks that will be more news around the September launch and options available. The source did reveal that a diesel will be available September comes. The diesel variant could be the 635d model with a new engine that offers lower fuel consumption. Just like the 650i and 640i, the turbocharged diesel will be matted to the fuel-efficient eight-speed automatic transmission.

Those of you that will skip on the new M6, you will have the option to order the new 6 Series Coupe with the M-Sport Package. The customers will have a choice between 19 or 20 inches alloy wheels, larger tires and a new exhaust system with improved acoustics.

As seen in other M-Sport Package offerings, the 6 Series Coupe tailpipes will be available in Dark Chrome.

First spy photos of the M-Sport Package have begun to appear as early as this week, so expect an official unveiling in the near future.

Previously revealed in a concept form at the 2010 Paris Motor Show, the new 6 Series Coupe will be joining the 2012 M5 Concept and an all-new 5 Series electric vehicle. Its North American debut will take place at the New York Auto Show that runs concurrently with the Chinese event.

Set to get its first public airing at the Shanghai motor show in April, the 6er coupe will arrive in European and U.S. showrooms after the summer, and will be competing against the Mercedes-Benz E63 Coupe and Jaguar XK.

Initially, the 2012 BMW 6 Series Coupe launches with two gasoline engine variants in Europe, the 640i and the highest offering, 650i, powered by a six-cylinder engine, respectively V8 turbocharged. BMW announced that the 640i coupe will cost 74,700 euros in Germany. No U.S. pricing is available at the moment.

Same headlights design is said to be featured in the 2012 BMW 3 Series. At the end, BMW fans will praise the new design that makes forgotten the overly discussed Bangle-butt. The L-shape taillights continue to remain a BMW icon and the full LED treatment bring out the luxury and sportiness from the new 6.

We expect the U.S. pricing to be announced next month in New York.

Yesterday, BMW unveiled to the world the F13 6er Coupe that goes on sale this Fall. The F13 6 Series Coupe comes to emphasize the new design language at BMW which started in 2009 with the E89 Z4, followed shortly by the F01/F02 7 Series and last year’s big seller, F10 5 Series.

BMW considers the new 6 series the top of their model range. Its role is to be the pinnacle of BMW’s coupe offerings and judging by these photos, it has not been disappointing.

Our previous coverage of the new 6er Coupe includes an impressive photo gallery, videos, comparison against the old 6er and of course, against its competition, the Mercedes-Benz CL.

Just moments ago, BMW also published the first wallpapers of the F13 6 Series Coupe.

The new F13 6er Coupe builds atop the Concept revealed last year and showcases a fresh design with a combination of luxury and sportiness.

We described the new 6 Series in a previous article, so feel free to head over.

Moving onto its main competitor, Mercedes-Benz. The CL model is being advertised as a full-sized grand tourer automobile. Originally derived from the SL-Class roadster, it has since been based on the S-Class sedan. Known at first as the SEC and later S coupe, it was spun off into its own, current name in 1998. The CL continues to follow the same development cycle as the S, though riding on a slightly shorter wheelbase.

The new W216 model was also officially unveiled at the Paris Motor Show, back in 2006. The 2011 facelift version of the Mercedes CL-Class made its world debut in July 2010 at the Goodwood Festival of Speed. The new CL-Class comes with an improved exterior and interior, but the biggest changes are found under the hood. The exterior gets a new grille, bi-xenon headlights with LED technology, LED fog lamps, revised fenders and hood, and new exhaust pipes. On the interior the biggest change is the addition of a new wood trim.

As always, we took the time to show the two cars side-by-side and from different angles. And yes, we acknowledge that the CL is an older model and a more fair comparison would be against the upcoming model.

A trademark of BMWBLOG for years now is to compare any new BMW to the previous generation. Today, with the unveiling of the F13 2012 BMW 6 Series Coupe, we are going to compare the current and upcoming generation 6 Series from different angles.

Previous generation 6 Series was penned by BMW’s VP of Design, Adrian Van Hooydonk, and the new 6 Series was designed under his direction as well. The F13 6 Series Coupe comes to emphasize the new design language at BMW which started in 2009 with the E89 Z4, followed shortly by the F01/F02 7 Series and last year’s big seller, F10 5 Series.

As our own Hugo Becker pointed out earlier, BMW considers the new 6 series the top of their model range. Its role is to be the pinnacle of BMW’s coupe offerings and judging by these photos, it has not been disappointing. The high-end Coupe features shorter rear deck and a dramatic slope of the rear light, along with perfect proportions. The road presence is impressive and it is shaping up to be a “dominatrix” on any roads.

The unique shape of the headlights are inspired from the Gran Coupe Concept, the four-door coupe that will come next year to further expand the flagship offerings from BMW.

Inside BMW stays true to another core value, the driver orientation. and compared to the previous generation, the luxury level has reached a new peak. The dashboard features a line coming from the center stack that doesn’t just wrap around and close in front of the driver, but actually shows the direction you want to drive towards to. The layering technique first introduced in the Vision ED Concept is the underlying factor here. Layering opens up the space and BMW designers have done a great job showing light and shadows inside the car, especially around the door.

But is the E63 ready to retire? Many would say yes, but judging by these photos, the current 6 Series seems almost as fresh as 7 years ago, one of the few BMWs that has not aged significantly. The design continues to be attractive to the eye, the dynamics and flame surfacing emphasize its sportiness and luxury. This is most likely Van Hooydonk’s best design to date and we can see why Nader Faghihzadeh, F13 designer, used the main three color elements from the 6 Series as a starting point: athletic, elegant and modern.

Before we let you enjoy these unique comparison, we would like to throw one question out there:

If the new 6 Series already has the “looks”, would the new M6 become THE ultimate BMW?

Its role is to be the pinnacle of BMW’s coupe offerings. And yet it encompasses a true coupe and a convertible. To show the car’s dynamics and new design, BMW releases a series of videos.

The 2012 BMW 6 Series Coupe goes on sale this Fall and at launch it will be available in the 650i and 640i models. The U.S market will initially receive the flagship 650i. In Europe, BMW is expected to also launch a diesel version of the 6er, most likely the 640d.

Pricing will be announced later in the year and the public debut will occur next month at the Shanghai Motor Show.

The car has a body length and wheelbase 75 millimetres longer than the predecessor model, increasing seating comfort for rear passengers. The width track has also been increased by 39-millimeter while the height was reduced 5-millimeter.

At launch, BMW offers two engine variants: BMW 650i Coupe with eight-cylinder powerplant (300 kW/407 hp), BMW 640i Coupe with six-in-line petrol unit (235 kW/320 hp).

Both engine variants come as standard with an eight-speed Sports automatic gearbox; BMW EfficientDynamics measures unmatched in the segment (including Auto Start-Stop function and ECO PRO mode in the BMW 640i Coupe); optimised efficiency combined with significant output increase over predecessor models of 30 kW (BMW 650i) and 35 kW (BMW 640i).

Its role is to be the pinnacle of BMW’s coupe offerings. And yet it encompasses a true coupe and a convertible. The British have a term that allows both models to be called coupes, and that term for a convertible top on a coupe body is known as a drop-head coupe.

And in reality that’s exactly what BMW intended with the convertible, to make it as close in form as possible to the coupe. The 6er coupe is the pure styling form from which the drop-head version was cleverly created.

The 6er coupe, in this author’s estimation, is better looking than the drop-head version.

And that line is picked up in parallel by the horizontal line that runs along the top of the rear bumper back into the rear wheel well area.

Dare it be compared to an Aston Martin DB9? Well, yes it can. It serves a similar clientèle, with the Aston Martin being a bit more exclusive. But the 6er coupe doesn’t give up anything on the styling front.

Word has it that Aston Martin is considering six cylinder engines again. And with the 640i coupe, that would help bring back the glory era of six cylinder Grand Touring cars.

Press Release: The hearts of sports car aficionados will beat a little faster with the arrival of the new BMW 650i Coupe. The third generation of the top-class Coupe sees BMW adding another chapter to its decades-long tradition in the production of exclusive dream cars. The new BMW 650i Coupe impresses with its stunning design and inspires with even sharper driving dynamics than its predecessor, noticeably optimized comfort levels and extra space. This is the only car in the segment to offer the combination of top-class sporting ability, exclusive touring comfort and a 16.24
cu. ft (460-liter) DIN luggage compartment. Also on board to deliver the BMW 6 Series Coupe’s signature driving experience are a range of innovative driver assistance systems and BMW ConnectedDrive infotainment features. The new car therefore meets the highest expectations of driving pleasure and style in a large, premium 2+2-seater. The 650i Coupe arrives in US showrooms this fall.

Its unmistakable design language gives the new BMW 6 Series Coupe an aura of athletic elegance. The long sweeping hood, short front overhang and set-back passenger compartment team up with a 2.9 inch (74 mm) increase in body length over its predecessor and a 2.95 inch (75 mm) longer wheelbase to create the hallmark proportions of a BMW Coupe.

Meanwhile, the extra width of the new car – it is now 1.5 inches (39 mm) wider thanks to its increased track width – makes for an exceptionally powerful stance that emphasizes its impressive roadholding. All of which ensures that observers are struck by the car’s dynamic forward-surging presence and promise of dynamic driving ability the moment they set eyes on it. The faithful reflection of the car’s character in its exterior styling is given particular appeal by the lines running along the full length of the body and its harmoniously sculpted surfaces. The inspiration for these design features was the natural movement of waves. In the same way as water is parted by an object in flowing water, the car body’s shaping lines fan out from the BMW badge on the hood to both sides of the body.

The innovations in the new BMW 6 Series Coupe also extend to lighting technology, in the shape of Adaptive LED Headlights. Their bright white light provides an extremely intense and evenly spread illumination of the road. This technology is unparalleled in the segment and also allows the beam of the headlights to curves of the road.

Other features that set the new car apart from its rivals are the BMW ConnectedDrive driver assistance systems and mobility services. The rear-view camera, Surround View, Parking Assistant, BMW Night Vision with pedestrian recognition, Lane Departure Warning System and Lane Change Warning System are joined on the list of available equipment items by the new generation of the BMW Head-Up-Display. The latest incarnation of the system uses a full spectrum of colors to display the information projected onto the windshield. The standard BMW iDrive control system, is the operating portal for the navigation, communications and infotainment functions. The high definition, trans-reflective technology Control Display is centrally mount high on the sweeping dash and emulates a freestanding flatscreen. Finally, the optional Bang & Olufsen High-End Surround Sound System provides a feast of aural pleasure seldom experienced inside a car.
The all-new third generation 650i Coupe will join the 650i Convertible in the US market this fall as a 2012 model. Retail and option pricing will be announced closer to the on-sale date.

Twin-Turbo V-8 engine with High Precision direct injection.
The 4.4-liter V-8 engine develops a maximum 400 hp between 5,500 and 6,400 rpm, and makes peak torque of 450 lb-ft between 1,750 and 4,500 rpm. This unique “reverse-flow” engine, whose two turbochargers are positioned in the V-area between the cylinder banks, produces an instantaneous and sustained wave of power, making it a delight for the enthusiast driver. The engine can be paired with either BMW’s new 8-speed Sport Automatic gearbox or BMW’s traditional 6-speed manual transmission, quite popular with North American enthusiasts.

The new BMW 650i Coupe completes the sprint from 0 to 60 mph in 4.8 seconds (0-100km/h in 4.9 seconds) with either the 6-speed manual or the 8-speed automatic transmission . Top speed is electronically limited to 155 mph. This engine also boasts extraordinary efficiency for a model in its output class. EPA figures will be available closer to the on-sale date in mid 2011.

8-speed Sport Automatic Transmission.
The 8-speed Sport Automatic transmission in the new BMW 650i Coupe boasts a perfect combination of speed, flexibility, sportiness, and efficiency. What sets it apart are its minimal torque converter slip and rapid gear changes. An innovative gear set configuration allows this transmission to offer eight gears, maximizing acceleration at any road speed yet allowing the driver to conserve fuel by cruising at low revs. Befitting the Coupe’s sporting character, the driver can choose to select gears manually via shift paddles on the standard Sport leather steering wheel.

In addition to the efficiency of the engine and 8-speed Sport Automatic transmission, an extensive range of BMW EfficientDynamics measures contribute to reducing fuel consumption and emissions. Brake Energy Regeneration, on-demand operation of ancillary components, intelligent lightweight construction and extensive aerodynamic refinement collaborate to ensure maximum efficiency.

Chassis Management and optional Integral Active Steering.
Cutting-edge chassis technology gives the new BMW 650i Coupe the tools to provide both sporty handling and exceptional comfort.

The electronically controlled damper system in the new BMW 6 Series Coupe adjusts compression and rebound settings continuously and independently.

The new BMW 650i Coupe is the first car in its class available with Integral Active Steering. This system combines the Active Steering system for the front axle (available on the previous generation 6 Series Coupe) with a new, steerable rear axle. Precisely harmonized steering angle movements at both axles create a virtual lengthening or shortening of the vehicle’s wheelbase, which fosters greater high-speed stability and enhanced maneuverability for parking and city use.

Brakes, Wheels, and Tires.
The lightweight floating-caliper brakes with vented discs are easy to use with precision, and their effectiveness is reinforced by Dynamic Stability Control. DSC brings together technology such as the Anti-lock Braking System, Dynamic Traction Control, Cornering Brake Control, Dynamic Brake Control, the Start-off Assistant, the automatic Brake Drying function and Brake Fade Compensation. Standard equipment also includes 8.5 x19-inch light-alloy wheels, with all-season runflat tires (size 245/40 R19) and a tire pressure monitoring system.

Driving Dynamics Control.
With standard Driving Dynamics Control, the dominant virtues of athletic driving sportiness and ride comfort can be chosen by the driver as situations demand. The driver can choose settings of COMFORT, NORMAL, SPORT and SPORT+ modes using the large rocker switch on the center console.
Unmatched chassis technology works with the cutting-edge engine to provide the driver with greater dynamic capability and improved ride comfort compared to the previous-generation 6 Series Coupe.

Design: Athletic elegance, natural sportiness.
The new BMW 6 Series Coupe again heralds the arrival of an exceptionally sporty and exclusive 2+2-seater in the premium Coupe segment. The new model’s extra length and width over its predecessor model combine with its 0.2 inch (5 mm) lower height to produce a strikingly low-set and powerful design. The new interpretation of the traditional BMW Coupe proportions is embellished by lines and surfaces inspired by the movement of waves. Flowing lines and harmonious curves create a feeling of athletic grace, complemented by extremely classic and eye-catching design features which underline the opulent character and elegant appearance of the two-door BMW.

High-quality chrome elements and the LED units of the foglamps positioned in front of them guide the eye to the muscular wheel arches.

High-visibility innovation: Adaptive LED Headlights.
The new BMW 6 Series Coupe is equipped with Adaptive Xenon headlights as standard.

However, the Adaptive LED Headlights are about more than just looking good; they also ensure the driver can see well. LED technology is also deployed for the direction indicators, each of which consists of eight LED units arranged in a row underneath the light rings. As well as enhancing visibility in the dark, the Adaptive LED Headlights also significantly improve the signaling effect of the car’s lights.

Side view: elegant roofline, powerfully curved surfaces.
Tightly curved surfaces and character lines stretching the full length of the body define the side view of the BMW 6 Series Coupe. The forward-slanting BMW kidney grille is particularly clear from this angle. Despite its smooth curves and innovative pedestrian protection measures, the long bonnet still has a flat appearance. Its contour lines fan out wide and extend towards the rear. In combination with the car’s typical Coupe proportions, this creates a particularly elegant, elongated silhouette.

The exterior design has been inspired by waves with clearly defined lines and volume formed around an object in flowing water. This gives the new BMW 6 Series Coupe a naturally powerful and sporty edge. The typical BMW character line starts behind the front wheel arch, takes in the sporty gill feature and extends dynamically along the flank of the car to the rear. In so doing, it stretches the new BMW 6 Series Coupe visually and lends it a dynamic yet elegant allure. The door handles are integrated into the character line. A further character line emerges from the swell of the front wheel arch, drops down between the gill and the door and then levels out towards the rear. Its path replicates a forward-surging wave. The door sill line underneath it and an additional crease give the lower edge of the body a light and sporty appearance.

The roofline of the new BMW 6 Series Coupe also swoops in an elegant, flat progression into the tail. It comes across as especially svelte when viewed from the side, creating a contrast typical of BMW Coupes between the powerful body and light passenger compartment. Doors with frameless windows underline this impression. The chromed side window border emphasizes the signature Hofmeister kink at the foot of the C-pillar.

Rear view: striking indications of dynamic and secure roadholding.
From the rear, the new BMW 6 Series Coupe exudes power, athleticism and solidity. Bulging wheel arches accentuate the wide track of the new car, offering a hint of its impressive roadholding. Added to which, horizontal lines and the broadening impression of the car’s shape as you follow it towards the rear paint a clear picture of the sporting performance waiting to be unlocked. The slightly concave lower section of the trunklid generates light and shade effects which lend an extra lightness to the rear of the car. The edges of the trunk lid and the license plate surround create a V-shape, which – similarly to the front of the car – steers the eye towards the road. The trapezoidal exhaust outlets are positioned on either side of the air diffuser in the lower fascia.

The two-part rear light clusters display the customary BMW L-shape in a particularly wide rendition that extends far into the trunk lid, while the character line that flows into the rear lights forges a harmonious link between the side and the rear of the car. Inside the rear light clusters, two LED-powered light strips generate the familiar BMW night-time look, an effect that is reinforced by the L-shaped lower light unit. The direction indicators and brake lights are also LED-powered. The wide third brake light is located in the upper edge of the trunk lid.

Interior with BMW’s traditional driver-oriented cockpit.
The new BMW 650i Coupe is designed to be a 2+2-seater.

Freestanding Central Display with flatscreen design.
The black-panel instrument cluster of the new BMW 650i Coupe combines the traditional sports car circular instruments with state-of-the-art display technology. The Navigation system, telephone and entertainment functions are operated using the iDrive control system, whose Central Display boasts an innovative design. The on-board monitor takes the form of a freestanding display with a flatscreen look. The high definition measures 10.2 inch across and features a high-quality galvanized chrome surround.

Dimensions and Storage.
At 192.7 in. (4,894 mm) in length, the new BMW 650i Coupe is 2.9 in. (74 mm) longer than its predecessor. Its extended wheelbase now stretches to 112.4 in. (2,855 mm). The car is 1.5 in. (39 mm) wider, measuring 74.6 in. (1,894 mm) across, while 0.36 in. (9mm) have been shaved from its height (now 53.9 in. /1,369 mm). These dimensions create a significantly more powerful and elegant impression, while taking interior spaciousness to new levels.

Despite its lower height, the new BMW 650i Coupe offers greater headroom in both front and rear seats. The height adjustment of the driver and front passenger seats also covers a greater range of travel. The increase in the width of the interior is noticeable from all four seats, and passengers in the rear seats benefit from additional legroom. The tilt angle of the rear seat backrest now achieves virtually the same angle as found in BMW Sedans.

New lightweight technology, comprehensive safety equipment.
The new BMW 650i Coupe is fitted with newly developed lightweight seats with an integrated seatbelt system and standard 20-way multi-contour adjustability and adjustable lumbar support. Optionally, the Luxury Seating Package adds front ventilated seats and active fatigue reduction can be added.

Its static torsional rigidity is about 50 percent greater than that of its predecessor. In the interests of perfect balance, the doors, hood and front spring mounts are all aluminum, while the front fenders, roof lid and trunklid are made from reinforced composite.

Cutting-edge features from BMW ConnectedDrive.
The new BMW 650i Coupe is available with a great variety of driver assistance systems and mobility services from BMW ConnectedDrive. The comprehensive Driver Assistance Package includes Automatic High Beams, Lane Departure Warning, Active Blind Spot Detection, Rear and Top View cameras, Parking Assistant, and a new three-dimensional, full-color Head-Up Display. Also available are BMW’s Night Vision with Pedestrian Detection and Active Cruise Control with stop-and-go capability.

HiFi stereo system.
The standard HiFi audio system in the new BMW 650i Coupe comes with an HD Radio receiver, MP3-compatible CD drive, AUX-IN connection, and a HiFi loudspeaker system with nine speakers.

When it comes to delivering audio pleasure of the highest order, the Bang & Olufsen High-End Surround Sound System designed especially for the new BMW 650i Coupe hits all the right notes.

The form and color of the advanced all-aluminum speaker grilles have been tailored precisely to the interior design of the new BMW 650i Coupe. A both visually and acoustically significant innovation, meanwhile, is the novel design of the center speaker in the instrument panel area, which uses Acoustic Lens Technology developed by Bang & Olufsen to provide a particularly harmonious sound.

Like its predecessor, the new BMW 650i Coupe is the only vehicle in its class with an optional Head-Up Display system. By projecting important information onto the windshield, directly in the driver’s line of sight, the Head-Up Display minimizes distraction from the road and traffic. The new-generation system brings a further improvement in display quality: the symbols are projected as three-dimensional graphics and in ultra-clear resolution onto the windshield.

To supplement the standard Park Distance Control, which uses ultrasonic sensors to monitor distance from objects in front or behind, the new BMW 650i Coupe also features a standard rear-view camera.

The BMW 650i Coupe: Production in Dingolfing, Germany.
The new BMW 650i Coupe is built at the BMW plant in Dingolfing, Germany. Also rolling off the assembly line at the BMW Group’s largest production plant are the BMW 7 Series and BMW 5 Series models. The flexible and efficient processes at the plant combine state-of-the-art production technology with a standard of quality defined by meticulous craftsmanship in the manufacture of premium cars configured to customer requirements.

Last spy photos reveal the 6er Coupe with barely any camouflage and for the first time, we get a look at the Glass Panoramic Roof. When introduced in Paris last year, 6 Series interior designer, Christian Bauer said the panoramic glass roof enhances the lightness of the interior design language.

BMW 6 Series Coupe is the first vehicle from the Munich-based automaker to get full LED treatment; driving lights, indication lights, brake lights and rear-lights. It has the same length as the current 6 Series, but sits on a wider track and has been lowered to enhance its sportiness character.

BMW’s Chief Designer Adrian van Hooydonk describes the front-end as “a shark-like nose” with a slightly forward-leaning kidney grille and a full-width air duct within the lower part of the bumper. The front-end design reflect both the sophistication and aggressiveness that went into this design. The kidney-grille are unique across the lineup with glass inserts along the top ridge.

The long bonnet and shorter overhangs are what perfectly describe a 6 Series model, and BMW enhanced these traits even more in the latest model. Also notable are the swollen front fenders, after which a sharp, chiseled upper body emerges.

To learn more about the 6 Series design language, see our workshop with Adrian Van Hooydonk.

The design came as a relief to those who were concerned BMW is going down the path of safe and conservative designs, some might even say, predictible. But seeing the car in person, has certainly changed our view.

Exterior Design. Full speed ahead.

BMW 6 Series Coupe is the first vehicle from the Munich-based automaker to get full LED treatment; driving lights, indication lights, brake lights and rear-lights.

It has the same length as the current 6 Series, but sits on a wider track and has been lowered to enhance its sportiness character.

Looks-wise, the 6 Series concept appears stronger, more sculpted, and more fluid designed that the current model. Flame surfacing is out and the car features more hardened lines running across its side.

BMW’s Chief Designer Adrian van Hooydonk describes the front-end as “a shark-like nose” featuring highly the previously mentioned LEDs, a slightly forward-leaning kidney grille and a full-width air duct within the lower part of the bumper.

Watching the car rotate on the turn table, the surface lines, concave and convex shapes, or the nice sculpted shadows, show us that BMW is taking a new path under the Van Hooydonk’s vision.

The body-to-glass approach with pillarless doors is another trademark of the new 6 Series Coupe and fits harmoniously with the rest of design.

The lower stance and wider rear will plant the car firmly on the ground and in our opinion, it will dominate the road and its surroundings.

Interior Design. A new whole level of luxury.

Its interior is more closely related to it predecessor, with an evolved, more dynamic driver-centric IP. The most intriguing aspect is the passenger side dash top and the surface above the glovebox, which twist, tornado-style along the center stack and into the center console.

Along with the new fresh design, the BMW 6 Series Coupe Concept offers a state-of-the-art interior design that has been much craved by BMW fans. The design has evolved towards a more dynamic driver-oriented cockpit with unique lines going across the dashboard, and twisting shapes that connect the center console to the driver and passenger’s own space.

The center section of the instrument panel, featuring the iDrive Control Display, the central air vents and the audio and climate controls, is inclined slightly but visibly towards the driver. The electronic gear selector and the Drive Dynamic Control buttons are mounted on the driver’s side of the front console.

The interior is dominated by the large 10.2 inch display that reveals the latest infotainment system from BMW. Framed by a chrome plated frame, the flat-screen takes a more upright position, in contrast to the built-in approach we have seen in previous models.

High-quality leather trim with double stitching in a contrasting color accentuates the dynamic transition between the centre console and the instrument panel. The instrument panel features the same Black Panel technology seen in the 5 Series family and the 7 Series flagship.

The BMW Concept 6 Series Coupe has a panoramic glass roof which enhances the lightness of this design language. Carefully selected materials, coupled with meticulous craftsmanship and build quality, underscore the luxurious character of the concept model.

While we weren’t allowed to sit inside, Christian Bauer, BMW interior designer, assured us that the rear seats offer comfortable headroom, legroom and shoulder room, especially compared to its predecessor.

Another highlight of the new 6 Series Coupe and something that BMW is really proud of, is the audio system designed exclusively for this model by the Danish shop Bang & Olufsen.

Conclusion.

Our first impression is that BMW hit a home run with the new 6er, restoring customers’ confidence in their design shop and bringing a fierce contender to the high-end luxurious automotive market. We expect very little changes to the production model due out at Geneva Motor Show in March 2011.
