The BMW ActiveHybrid 5 brings together a BMW TwinPower Turbo six-cylinder in-line engine, an electric drive system and an eight-speed automatic gearbox for the first time. The 306 hp six-cylinder in-line engine with BMW TwinPower Turbo technology in the BMW ActiveHybrid 5 is the same unit used in other BMW vehicles, and it is aided by an electric motor developing 40 kW/55 hp. Energy is supplied by a high-performance lithium-ion battery integrated into the luggage area.

Its hybrid drive system generates combined output of 340 hp, allowing the car to be driven on electric power alone up to 60 km/h (37 mph). BMW ActiveHybrid 5 accelerates from 0 to 100 km/h (62 mph) in 5.9 seconds with exceptional fuel consumption: 6.4 and 7.0 litres per 100 kilometres (33 – 36.7 mpg). CO2 emissions are reported at 149 – 163 grams per kilometer.

Here is an excerpt from the review:

In normal mode, the ActiveHybrid 5 isn’t quite as rapid as there’s no extra battery power – we would estimate the 0-62mph time to be around 7.5 seconds. To maximise economy, the ActiveHybrid 5 debuts BMW’s Intelligent Energy Management software as part of the optional Navigation Professional system. This reads the road ahead and reacts accordingly, selecting which
mode will be most efficient for the cleanest driving possible.

The hybrid claims to emit 16 per cent less CO2 than the 535i SE and improve economy by around 12 per cent. This means emissions as low as 149g/km with average returns of up to 44mpg when driving in the most frugal EcoPro mode.

Efficiency also depends on which wheels and tyres you go for. The ActiveHybrid 5 comes with 17-inch low-resistance tyres as standard, but our test car featured optional 18-inch Streamline alloy wheels. On the larger wheels over Portugal’s undulating coastal terrain, the best we achieved was 30.1mpg. In a 535d diesel we would expect to be getting nearer 40mpg in regular driving.

BMW takes the development of intelligent hybrid drive systems to the next level with the introduction of the BMW ActiveHybrid 5 – another series-produced model in which a combustion engine and electric motor join forces to enhance both efficiency and the brand’s hallmark driving pleasure. The BMW ActiveHybrid 5 brings together a BMW TwinPower Turbo six-cylinder in-line engine, an electric drive system and an eight-speed automatic gearbox for the first time. The latest generation of BMW ActiveHybrid technology also adds precisely controlled – and therefore extremely effective – intelligent energy management to the mix. All of which gives the BMW ActiveHybrid 5 an exceptional balance of performance and fuel economy for the premium executive car class.

The drive system generates combined output of 250 kW/340 hp, allows the car to be driven on electric power alone up to 60 km/h (37 mph), accelerates the
BMW ActiveHybrid 5 from 0 to 100 km/h (62 mph) in 5.9 seconds, cuts average fuel consumption to between 6.4 and 7.0 litres per 100 kilometres (40 – 44 mpg imp) and has CO2 emissions of just 149 – 163 g/km (figures according to EU test cycle, may vary according to the tyre format specified).

Latest-generation BMW ActiveHybrid technology: six-in-line engine, electric motor, lithium-ion battery.
The 225 kW/306 hp six-cylinder in-line engine with BMW TwinPower Turbo technology in the BMW ActiveHybrid 5 is the same unit renowned for its free-revving capability, pulling power and efficiency in the BMW 535i. The electric motor, meanwhile, develops 40 kW/55 hp and is supplied with energy by a high-performance lithium-ion battery integrated into the luggage area. Power from the two drive systems is transferred to the rear wheels by the eight-speed automatic gearbox. In addition to its full-hybrid construction, which enables purely electric and therefore local emission-free driving in urban conditions, the
BMW ActiveHybrid 5 boasts not just highly sporty performance but also a double-digit percentage improvement in fuel economy over the BMW 535i.

Superior efficiency thanks to ECO PRO mode including coasting and intelligent energy management.
In order to fully exploit the potential of the BMW ActiveHybrid technology, the intelligent energy management of the power electronics uses a host of innovative functions to ensure the drive system runs efficiently. Charging of the high-performance battery primarily takes place during coasting or braking, the electric motor performing the role of a generator feeding energy into the high-voltage battery. By contrast, under acceleration the electric motor takes on a boost function. Here, it assists the petrol engine by generating an ultra-dynamic burst of power, lending the sedan’s sporty driving experience a sharper edge.

Moreover, while coasting at speeds of up to 160 km/h (100 mph) in ECO PRO mode, the combustion engine can be switched off and fully decoupled. This coasting mode combines comfortable driving with optimum utilisation of the kinetic energy already generated. To avoid periods with the engine running at idle – at junctions or in traffic tailbacks, for example – the BMW ActiveHybrid 5 is equipped with a hybrid start-stop function. Plus, the power electronics in the BMW ActiveHybrid 5 are linked up with the standard-fitted Navigation system Professional. This allows forward-looking analysis of the driving situation, enabling the drive components to be primed to deliver maximum efficiency (the effect may vary according to the quality of the available navigation data).

All the hybrid-specific components of the drive technology and energy management systems have been developed specially for use in the
BMW ActiveHybrid 5. The result is an extremely well-rounded overall concept, which also provides a convincing demonstration of the BMW ActiveHybrid technology’s qualities out on the road. Needless to say, all of the new hybrid components are designed to last for the life of the vehicle.

Design: sporty elegance with individual accents.
The BMW ActiveHybrid 5 sees the sporty yet elegant body design of the BMW 5 Series Sedan complemented by bespoke touches which highlight the identity of its drive technology. The “ActiveHybrid 5” lettering on the
C-pillars, the BMW kidney grille with galvanised slats and the exhaust matt chrome tailpipes set the exterior apart from the other models in the range. Available as an option, meanwhile, are 18-inch Streamline light-alloy wheels displaying exceptional aerodynamic efficiency. The BMW ActiveHybrid 5 is the only model in the BMW 5 Series line-up to be available in the exterior paint shade Bluewater metallic, and it also stands out visually from all other
5 Series variants with door sill strips bearing “ActiveHybrid 5” lettering, an aluminium plate on the centre console with the same ID, a bespoke engine cover and the visible “ActiveHybrid Power Unit” inscription on the special casing for the high-performance battery accommodated in the luggage area.

High-grade standard fittings, wide-ranging options.
The selection of interior colours, upholstery and interior trim elements reflects the range offered for the other BMW 5 Series Sedan variants. And added to the standard-fitted array of comfort-enhancing features is not only the Navigation system Professional, but also a 4-zone climate control system with stationary air conditioning. A wide range of driver assistance systems and BMW ConnectedDrive mobility services, as well as virtually all the other optional extras available for the conventionally powered BMW 5 Series Sedan, can also be specified for the BMW ActiveHybrid 5.

Production at BMW Plant Dingolfing.
The BMW ActiveHybrid 5 will be produced at BMW Plant Dingolfing – the BMW Group’s largest production plant worldwide – alongside the other
BMW 5 Series models, ensuring that it benefits from the same high standards of quality and production efficiency. The integration into the production process of BMW ActiveHybrid technology is underpinned by the intelligent combination of state-of-the-art automated process engineering and the skilled craftsmanship of specially trained employees.

The PD-R aerodynamic package builds atop the previous release by adding a new front-bumper that fits all 5 Series models except the new M5, also new side skirts and rear add-on diffusor.

The package brings the 5 Series look closer to the super sporty M5, but also includes some interesting design cues from the 1 Series M Coupe, like the air curtains at the outer edge of the front skirt.

At the rear, Prior Design offers four centrally positioned tailpipes.

The folks over at GT Spirit bring us a test drive review of the G-Power M5 Hurricane RS Touring. The almighty touring is powered by a G-POWER twin-supercharger engine with 750 hp/551 kW and 750Nm at 5,000rpm. But how does it handle itself on the road rather than the race track?

Let’s have a look.

“What G-Power likes to demonstrate with their high-speed versions of the M5 and M5 Touring is that the performance increase does not have to affect the usability or drivability of the car. When driving in town with the gearbox set to automatic you will not even notice the 750hp available under your right foot. The ride is smooth and everything feels comfortable like a normal BMW M5 Touring. But we haven’t come to Germany to check the practicality of the Hurricane RS Touring, we want to know what it can do when you push it.

The G-Power headquarters is located in a rural area in Bavaria about an hour from Munich. The hilly surroundings, quiet roads and the famous unlimited German autobahn in close proximity provide the perfect location for our road test. Once you set the seven-speed SMG into manual mode, engage the first gear through the small flappy pedals behind the steering wheel and hit the throttle the car suddenly shows the G-Power character. 0-100km/h is done in 4.5 seconds, 9.7 seconds after setting off you pass 200km/h and if you keep your foot down it will cross 300km/h after just 26 seconds. At that moment you forget you are in an estate car that weighs over two tonnes.

Under full throttle the Hurricane RS Touring propels forward like a rocket, in the lower gears each hard acceleration is a test for grip of the rear tyres. Changing gear goes fast but feels more aggressive than the standard M5 due to the massive increase in power and torque. Driving over the twisty country roads in Southern Germany the brakes don’t fail to impress, they provide plenty of stopping power for the two-tonnes Hurricane RS Touring.”

The VMS package consists of a lightweight pre-preg carbon fiber aerodynamic package for vehicles equipped with the factory M Tech aero package.

The Vorsteiner VMS carbon package includes an add-on front spoiler, rear diffuser and a deck lid spoiler element to complete the aero package. To further complement the new sporty character of this new sports sedan we have developed a finely tuned cat back exhaust system as well as a collection of 20 and 21 inch forged wheels.

The VMS Front Spoiler

The newly designed VMS front spoiler has been specifically designed to fit F10 5 series vehicles with the optional M Tech package. The front spoiler not only creates a purposeful and functional balance to the front end but is also unmistakably beautiful and precise.

The VMS Rear Spoiler

The VMS rear add on carbon deck lid spoiler balances the additional down force created from the new front end and also elegantly extends the tail of the factory boot lid to distinguish the vehicle from other standard production cars. The VMS rear deck lid spoiler is compatible with all standard F10 5 series with our signature pre-preg autoclave construction and automotive clear lacquer finishing.

The VMS Rear Diffuser

The VMS high temperature resistant carbon pre-preg rear diffuser replaces the factory plastic unit and precisely clips into all the original rear bumper mounting point with ease. The design of this rear diffuser draws roots from our GTS-V track line with its signature upper splitter elements with it sporty centrally located aero fins that frames our new quad sports exhaust system.

Instead of building atop the already aggressive M Sport Package, the tuner takes a new approach and creates more exclusivity for the 5 Series models.

First significant change comes from the rear-end where Prior Design installed an exhaust system with four tailpipes in a setting similar to the BMW M3, toward the center of the rear bumper.

The package also includes a Prior Design front spoiler, a rear apron diffuser, matching side skirts and a roof edge spoiler in carbon. All components are initially available only for export, prices are directly available on request from Prior Design.

The brand new F10 550i saloon comes equipped with the M Sport package and before it went through the “green treatment”, was featuring an Alpine White paint. This is the work of Re-Styling, a Russian tuning company from Saint-Persburg. To enhance its sportiness, the Russian tuner also added a Hamann body kit and some parts from AC SChnitzer.

To get the final “paint”, the tuner first added a chrome wrap after which came a translucent green wrap.

A little extreme? Maybe, but there is always a customer that wants something unique or simply…out of ordinary.

Power and Associates, best known for its customer satisfaction research on new-car quality and long-term dependability, names the new BMW 5 Series the “Most Appealing Midsize Premium Car.”

The F10 5 Series Sedan scored the highest points in the following categories: Overall Performance and Design, Performance, Comfort, Features and Instrument Panel and Style.

In the Initial Quality assessment, the ratings for the 5 Series varied from three to four and a half stars, lowest scored was registered in the Powertrain Quality Mechanical and Powertrain Quality Design categories.

With a new, fresh and safe design, the F10 5 Series has already exceeded the company’s sales expectations and remains a strong product around the world.

In the United States, BMW offers three models, the entry-level 528i with a four-cylinder engine that just went on sale, the more powerful 535i with a twin-scroll turbocharged six cylinder engine and the top model 550i with its V8 twin-turbo powerplant.

With the introduction of the new four-cylinder engine, we expect the sales for the 528i model to overpass the other models and become one of the most sought midsize premium sedans.

The 2.0-liter produces 240 hp at 5000 rpm and 260 lb-ft of torque from 1250 rpm. That matches the horsepower figure for the old six and surpasses it in the torque department with 30 additional lb-ft, peaking 1350 rpm earlier. A ZF eight-speed automatic will be the only transmission available, although the 2012 528i will see the addition of xDrive all-wheel drive as an option. BMW estimates a fuel consumption of 24/34 mpg city/highway.

Unfortunately for those of us that live in the US, the sporty and elegant-looking 5 Series Touring is not available, in any form or setup.

Without any further ado, let’s have see an excerpt from their review.

“Even though the combination of a touring body and a diesel engine wouldn’t be our first choice, we took the AC Schnitzer ACS5 Sport 3.0d for a trip around the town of Aachen, the hometown of the German tuner.

The Alpine White 530d we tried was equipped with every possible electronic gimmick, a stiffer suspension kit by AC Schnitzer and the stock Variable Damper Control, or possibly Adaptive Drive, in either case incorporating the Drive Dynamic Control chassis configurator that has four ride quality settings to choose from: Comfort, Normal, Sport and Sport+. The settings offered us a great way of adapting our setup while cruising through the city finding a place to shoot our photos.

The 530d’s 3.0 liter six-cylinder diesel engine allowed the journey to be done at effortless pace. The additional oomph added to the setup increases the horsepower to 286hp at 4,000rpm (+43hp) and the maximum torque to 620Nm between 2,000 and 3,000rpm (+80Nm). The difference in power is not readily felt by those who aren’t used to the turbodiesel engine, but the spokesperson at AC Schnitzer ensured us that an additional push had been accomplished in the mid-rev range. Also a twin sports rear silencer with chromed Sports Trim tailpipe trims was fitted to the vehicle and offered us an improved sound track while cruising.

At first the Touring doesn’t immediately feel that quick thanks to its 1,800kg kerbweight, but when you floor the throttle and take a glance at the speedometer it will always confirm that you’re travelling faster than you initially thought. Combine this with the ride, which is as comfortable as sitting in your luxury living room at home watching your favorite television series, and you have a wonderful combination of elegance, performance and practicality.”

Frozen Black, Frozen Gray and Frozen Silver are the three colors that are now available with the super-sporty package.

The very rare, yet stunning, Frozen Silver was spotted in Germany on a BMW 550i with the M Sport package. The color looks similar to the Artic Silver paint available on the highly-exclusive BMW M3 CRT.

The Frozen Silver Metallic is also available to order on the new M5 and is considered to be an alternative to the matte Frozen Grey.

The first hybrid within the 5 Series family will start at 62,900 euros, including VAT, and it comes with an extended list of options that can significantly increase the price.

In Germany, the price places the ActiveHybrid 5 at 12, 200 euros more than the BMW 535i sedan. However, standard options on the hybrid, like the eight-speed automatic and navigation system reduces the price gap.

In order to fully exploit the potential of the BMW ActiveHybrid technology, the intelligent energy management of the power electronics in the BMW ActiveHybrid 5 uses a host of innovative functions to ensure the drive system runs efficiently. The lithium-ion high-performance battery is charged when the car is coasting or braking, the electric motor performing the role of a generator feeding energy into the high-voltage battery. By contrast, under acceleration the electric motor takes on a boost function. Here, it assists the petrol engine by generating an ultra-dynamic burst of power, lending the sedan’s sporty driving experience a noticeably sharper edge.

The 5 Series Hybrid comes to United States in 2012 and we expect its base price to position the vehicle between the 535i and the high-end 550i. This will be the second hybrid BMW in the US, along with the 7 Series Hybrid. Recently BMW of North American announced the retirement of the BMW X6 ActiveHybrid.

The entry-leve 5er into the US market goes through a major change under the hood. The 528i is the second model in the BMW lineup to receive an all-new four-cylinder engine. The 2012 BMW Z4 sDrive28i was the first to feature the all-new 2.0 liter four-cylinder engine, codename N20. The four-cylinder turbo unit replaces the venerable N52B30 six-cylinder naturally aspirated unit, one of most acclaimed BMW engines in the line-up.

The introduction of smaller, more efficient engines comes as no surprise for us since the Munich-based automaker has been committed for years to its EfficientDynamics program.

But can the new, gusty four banger overcome the weight of the 5 Series? Does the car still feel agile and responsive? Let’s have a look at an excerpt from the InsideLine review:

Torque From Low Revs
The result is a very impressive 240 hp from 2.0 liters and even more usefully, a stout 258 lb-ft of torque from as low as 1,250 rpm. This torque stream is sustained all the way to 4,800 rpm, promising the kind of midrange punch that normally aspirated six-cylinder gas engines rarely offer. And you can feel its effects almost as soon as you move off, the 2012 BMW 528i advancing with a confident authority that’s heightened by the tremor-free activities of its eight-speed automatic transmission.

All those ratios help disguise the steep ramp to the torque peak, which kicks in with authority as the revs approach 2,000 rpm. But to uncover this, you must switch to manual shifting so you can hold the car in a gear, trickle it down to 1,000 rpm in 2nd and stomp on the accelerator as if you hate it. There’s a brief pause, followed by an excitingly exponential surge that leaves no doubt that this is a rapid car. By 2,000 rpm it’s pulling like a lashed mule and there’s a substantial power spike at 3,500 rpm. The acceleration is unrelenting until 6,500 rpm, when the transmission automatically upshifts to let you do it all over again.

Though this four has lost the turbinelike wail of the six, it’s more powerful and it stays smoothly unfussed until it closes on 6,600 rpm. The culture of the six is gone, but there’s more honest muscle to this engine. Those familiar with a BMW straight-6′s smooth-spinning ways will miss it some, but it makes the 5 Series a better car. There’s some refinement missing, but the return of lighter fuel bills, more torque and extra entertainment is a worthy trade.

Intelligence breeds efficiency:The BMW ActiveHybrid 5.

The latest generation of BMW ActiveHybrid technology also adds precisely controlled – and therefore extremely effective – energy management to the mix. All of which gives the BMW ActiveHybrid 5 an exceptional balance of performance and fuel economy for the premium executive car class.

Its drive system generates combined output of 250 kW/340 hp, allows the car to be driven on electric power alone up to 60 km/h (37 mph), accelerates the BMW ActiveHybrid 5 from 0 to 100 km/h (62 mph) in 5.9 seconds, limits average fuel consumption to between 6.4 and 7.0 litres per 100 kilometres (44 – 40 mpg imp) and has CO2 emissions of just 149 – 163 grams per kilometre (figures according to EU test cycle, may vary according to the tyre format specified).

A harmonious blend of power from the two drive systems is transferred to the rear wheels by the eight-speed automatic gearbox. In addition to its full-hybrid construction, which enables purely electric and therefore emission-free driving in urban conditions, the BMW ActiveHybrid 5 boasts not only the sportiest performance in its market segment but also a double-digit percentage improvement in fuel economy over the BMW 535i.

Added to which, while coasting at speeds of up to 160 km/h (100 mph) in ECO PRO mode, the combustion engine can be switched off and fully decoupled.

All the hybrid-specific components of the drive technology and energy management systems have been developed specially for use in the BMW ActiveHybrid 5. The result is an extremely well-rounded overall concept, which also provides a convincing demonstration of the BMW ActiveHybrid technology’s qualities out on the road. Needless to say, all of the new hybrid components are designed to last for the life of the vehicle.

The BMW ActiveHybrid 5 sees the sporty yet elegant body design of the BMW 5 Series Sedan complemented by bespoke touches which highlight the identity of its drive technology. The “ActiveHybrid 5” lettering on the C-pillars, BMW kidney grille with galvanised slats and exhaust matt chrome tailpipes set the exterior apart from the other models in the range. Available as an option, meanwhile, are 18-inch Streamline light-alloy wheels displaying exceptional aerodynamic efficiency. The BMW ActiveHybrid 5 is the only model in the BMW 5 Series line-up to be available in the exterior paint shade Bluewater metallic, and it also stands out visually from all other 5 Series variants with door sill strips bearing “ActiveHybrid 5” lettering, an aluminium plate on the centre console with the same ID, a bespoke engine cover and the visible “ActiveHybrid Power Unit” inscription on the special casing for the high-performance battery accommodated in the luggage area.

The selection of interior colours, upholstery and interior trim elements reflect the range offered for the other BMW 5 Series Sedan variants.

Innovative combination: award-winning six-cylinder in-line engine, newly developed electric drive system.

This is the first time that a six-cylinder in-line engine has been included as part of a BMW ActiveHybrid system. The 3.0-litre petrol unit, which develops 225 kW/306 hp and peak torque of 400 Newton metres (295 lb-ft), represents a passport to increased driving pleasure and efficiency. The BMW TwinPower Turbo technology of the six-cylinder engine, which has already won the international Engine of the Year Award two years in succession, comprises a twin-scroll turbocharger, High Precision Direct Injection and VALVETRONIC variable valve timing.

The synchronous electric motor of the BMW ActiveHybrid 5 is integrated into the housing of the eight-speed automatic gearbox, saving space. The link-up between the electric motor and gearbox is controlled by a clutch and the motor’s operating temperature is regulated by the combustion engine’s cooling system. The electric drive system develops 40 kW/55 hp and makes 210 Newton metres (155 lb-ft) of torque available from rest. The motor is supplied with energy by a lithium-ion high-performance battery, likewise specially developed for the BMW ActiveHybrid 5. The high-voltage battery is encased in a special high-strength housing and positioned between the wheel arches in the luggage area, providing it with optimum protection. It consists of 96 cells, has its own cooling system and offers usable energy capacity of 675 Wh. The integration of the lithium-ion high-performance battery into the luggage area reduces the load capacity of the BMW ActiveHybrid 5 to 375 litres, 145 litres lower than that of a BMW 5 Series Sedan variant powered purely by a combustion engine.

The BMW ActiveHybrid 5 has both a conventional 14-volt power supply and a high-voltage supply with an operating voltage of 317 volts. They are linked up by a voltage transformer ensuring that maximum electric energy can be used to enhance driving dynamics and comfort in any operating phase. Like the electric motor, the air conditioning compressor is also fed with power from the lithium-ion high-performance battery exclusively via the high-voltage supply. This ensures a pleasant interior climate, even when the combustion engine is switched off – i.e. when the car is at a standstill, operating purely on electric power or in coasting mode. In addition, the stationary climate control function can be used to cool the interior before the engine is started up.

Intelligently controlled hybrid technology: unprecedented precision for superior efficiency.

Up to a speed of 60 km/h (37 mph), the BMW ActiveHybrid 5 can operate in all-electric mode for zero emissions in town. The lithium-ion high-voltage battery can store sufficient energy to give an all-electric driving range of up to four kilometres (approx. 2.5 miles) at an average speed of 35 km/h (22 mph).

The internal combustion engine is only started when the driver requires more power: it is then engaged automatically. The electric motor provides a “boost” function to supplement the engine when accelerating. Maximum combined power is 250 kW/340 hp, with maximum torque of 450 Newton metres. Under combined ICE/electric power, the BMW ActiveHybrid 5 delivers a 0 to
100 km/h (62 mph) acceleration time of 5.9 seconds.

Hybrid-specific Auto Start-Stop function and coasting mode.

Thanks to the specially designed Hybrid Auto Start-Stop function, there are no compromises on comfort even when the vehicle is stopped in traffic for longer periods – after the internal combustion engine is shut off, the automatic climate control simply runs off the lithium-ion battery. When the driver releases the brake, the vehicle will restart on either the electric motor alone or the electric motor and the petrol engine, depending on the high-voltage battery’s current charge level and on how much power the driver wants.

Another innovation being pioneered in the BMW ActiveHybrid 5 further improves efficiency by shutting the internal combustion engine down not only when the vehicle is stationary, or when driving in town, but also on overrun. In the BMW ActiveHybrid 5, this coasting mode is available at any speed up to 160 km/h (100 mph). Coasting mode switches off the petrol engine and disconnects it from the drive shaft. From this point on, the BMW ActiveHybrid 5 continues moving soundlessly, with zero emissions and with no engine braking effect. The potential efficiency improvements are further enhanced by tyres with reduced rolling resistance. In coasting mode too, as with all-electric mode for urban driving, all safety and comfort functions remain fully operational.

Intelligent energy management with proactive analysis of the driving situation.

The advanced power electronics coordinate the operation of the internal combustion engine and electric motor with precise reference to the driving situation. For even more efficient energy management in the BMW ActiveHybrid 5, this functionality has been extended to include proactive analysis of the driving situation. To support this, the power electronics are integrated with the standard-fitted Professional navigation system, which means they can access and analyse data indicating an upcoming change in external conditions or driver requirements at a very early stage. Based on this analysis, the vehicle can be prepared in advance for the relevant requirements so that all powertrain systems and the on-board electronics are managed appropriately and in such a way as to make the most efficient possible use of the available energy.

Factors that may cause a change in powertrain operating strategy include the topography of the route and speed limits. For example, if the system knows that a hilly stretch is coming up soon, the BMW ActiveHybrid 5 can invest all the high-voltage battery’s electrical energy in providing supplementary driving power, since the battery will be recharged “at no cost” during the subsequent descent. On longer downhill sections the electric motor’s generator function, too, can be enlisted to recharge the high-voltage battery with no loss of speed. The operating strategy can also be managed so as to ensure that the high-voltage battery is as fully charged as possible when nearing the end of the journey, thereby increasing the electric driving range on the “last lap”.

The operating status of the powertrain components is shown in intuitive, model-specific displays in the instrument cluster and in the Control Display of the BMW ActiveHybrid 5. As well as the energy flow and energy recuperation display, these include a further gauge next to the rev counter which shows the boost effect being provided by the electric motor during acceleration. A display in the iDrive interface provides a variety of information – for example on the lithium-ion high-voltage battery’s current charge level and the power-sharing between the internal combustion engine and the electric motor in the course of a journey.

Exceptional hybrid model, typical BMW 5 Series: highest standards of driving dynamics, safety and comfort.

The chassis specifications of the BMW ActiveHybrid 5 include a double-wishbone front axle and integral rear axle, electromechanical power steering including the Servotronic speed-sensitive power assist function, a high-performance brake system and 17-inch alloy wheels. Dynamic Damper Control, featuring electronically controlled damping, is optionally available. The Dynamic Stability Control (DSC) system, which stabilises the vehicle by applying braking pressure and reducing engine power, also incorporates functions such as Dynamic Traction Control (DTC), the Anti-lock Braking System (ABS), Cornering Brake Control (CBC), Dynamic Brake Control (DBC), Brake Assist, Fading Compensation, a Dry Braking function and Start-Off Assistant.

The hybrid-specific safety features, which protect the lithium-ion high-voltage battery and the power electronics, are integrated in the BMW 5 Series’ elaborate integrated active and passive safety concept. In a collision, high-strength structural components and large deformation zones help to keep impact forces away from the passenger cell and also from the hybrid drive components. Other standard safety systems on the BMW ActiveHybrid 5 include front and side airbags, side curtain head airbags for both rows of seats, three-point inertia-reel belts on all seats, belt force limiters and belt latch tensioners on the front seats and ISOFIX child seat attachments in the rear.

In the BMW ActiveHybrid 5, too, the standard-fitted Driving Experience Control switch offers not only Sport+, Sport and Comfort set-ups (as well as Comfort+ mode if the optional Dynamic Damper Control is specified), but also ECO PRO mode. The latter supports a particularly relaxed and fuel-efficient driving style, and makes more frequent use of all-electric mode. As an alternative to the standard-fitted automatic transmission, a sports automatic with faster shift times is optionally available.

BMW ConnectedDrive systems optionally available for the BMW ActiveHybrid 5 include Park Distance Control, a rear-view camera, Surround View, Adaptive Headlights, High-Beam Assistant, Speed Limit Info,
BMW Parking Assistant, Lane Change Warning, Lane Departure Warning, BMW Night Vision with pedestrian recognition and the BMW Head-Up Display. Innovative technologies also allow in-car integration of the Apple iPhone, other smartphones and music players, and use of the Real-Time Traffic Information and Apps functions.

To further enhance comfort and individuality, the standard-specification 4-zone automatic climate control and navigation system Professional can be supplemented by options such as active seats, active seat ventilation, Comfort Access, the Smart Opener for the tailgate, the Soft Close Automatic function for the doors, a power-operated glass roof and high-end audio and rear entertainment systems.

BMW ActiveHybrid 5: intelligent technology points the way forward.

The BMW ActiveHybrid 5 features newly developed hybrid components that are combined for the first time with a six-cylinder BMW TwinPower Turbo engine, and innovative functions for further improved efficiency and driving enjoyment. At the same time it broaches yet another market segment, taking BMW’s hybrid development work a further step forward. As always, BMW ActiveHybrid technology is offered in a form which is optimally adapted to the requirements of the particular vehicle concept and market segment.

The drivetrain of the D5 Bi-Turbo utilises the excellent attributes of the BMW full aluminium 3 litre in line six cylinder engine with modern common-rail direct injection and two turbo-chargers with variable turbine geometry.

With the aim of maximising the potential of this engine and using the freedom that small series production allows, the engineers from Buchloe have worked extensively on optimising the air intake flows. The new air intake ducts have substantially larger diameters and feature optimised radii which lead to a significant reduction in loss of pressure. This effective means of ‘de-restricing‘ the air flow between the air intake and the air filter housing allows the engine to breathe more freely, resulting in improved performance and a more lively character.

In combination with the realisation of appropriate turbo charging and injection pressures this leads to a maximum output of 350hp (257kW) between 4000rpm – 4200rpm.

The performance and effectiveness of the entire cooling system has a direct influence on the stability and output of turbo charged engines – as a result, the cooling system in the new D5 Bi-Turbo is of central importance. A large volume intercooler with an optimised inlet and outlet design, feeds the engine with air. Two additional separate water coolers, which are situated in front of the wheelhouse and lie perfectly within the air flow from the front spoiler, ensure that all cooling mediums (via oil/water-heat exchangers) are kept at optimum temperatures, even during maximum thermodynamic loads. The operating parameters and components of the cooling system are managed by a cooling system control unit which features an intelligent operation of the electric cooling fan to directly influences performance under full loads.

An exhaust manifold made from high-strength material allows for higher exhaust gas temperatures which result from the increased power output. The exhaust system is principally a carry-over from the B5 Bi-Turbo but includes a diesel particulate filter. Sound engineering and the reduction of silencer volumes has resulted in a for diesel engines surprisingly throaty exhaust sound, especially at higher rpms. The character of the engine overall is unusually lively for a diesel engine, revving freely and convincingly past 4500rpm.

Despite the engine‘s high specific power output of 117hp per litre, it achieves class-leading fuel consumption and emission figures: 6,2 l/100km (45.6mpg) and 165g/km CO2 (Touring: 6,5 l/100km (43.5mpg) and 172g/km CO2) (Combined, measured according to ECE norm).

TRANSMISSION – Eight-Speed All-Rounder
Adapted and tested in co-operation with ZF, the advanced SWITCH-TRONIC 8-speed Sport Automatic Transmission features specific hardware modifications demanded by the high torque output, including special mechatronic components and a different torque converter.

ALPINA engineers have spent many development and test hours working on the transmission software to ensure that the transmission provides unparalleled levels of both comfort and performance. The blend of eight speeds and high levels of torque makes for super comfortable gear changes with no noticeable interruption to the delivery of power.
In Automatic Shift Mode (D) the D5 Bi-Turbo excels at cruising along at speeds in high gears at minimum rpm, this benefits both consumption and comfort.

Using the Sport Shift Mode (S) the transmission becomes noticeably ‘crisper‘ and unmistakably immediate, gear changes become noticeably quicker and take place at later shift points. The ALPINA SWITCH-TRONIC buttons, which are ergonomically and unobtrusively positioned on the back of the steering wheel, activate the Manual Shift Mode (M) which allows the driver to take complete control of the transmission. The system also allows for multisimultaneous down-shifts in milliseconds, hereby the transmission will skip several gears depending on engine loads and rpm. In this manner the 8-speed Sport Automatic Transmission with ALPINA SWITCH-TRONIC reveals itself as extremely multi-faceted, providing the right shift characteristic for any and all situations.

An adapted version of BMW’s new ECO PRO Mode, which activated via the Drive Performance Control button, puts both the transmission and accelerator into a defensive setting, which in combination with other Efficient Dynamic technologies (including Auto Start Stop) can lead to a reduction in consumption and emissions, depending on individual driving style.

The intelligent coupling of state-of-the-art engine and transmission technologies allow the D5 Bi-Turbo Saloon to achieve impressive performance figures: 0-100km/h in 5.2s, and a top speed of 270km/h. Excellent braking capability is provided in the form of ventilated high-performance brakes measuring 374mm front and 345mm rear.

CHASSIS & SUSPENSION

Dynamic Comfort

The times when overly stiff suspensions were seen as a positive handling characteristic are long gone. It remains a fact that a truly neutral set-up, even at the limit, provides the best technical compromise.

This is achieved in part through shorter ALPINA springs, greater camber at the front and subtle changes to the toein. Together with 20“ wheels and tyres this yields a very balanced and direct chassis set-up, discarding a pure sport-orientated approach for an agile suspension with precise turn-in.

Mounted on the light-weight ALPINA CLASSIC wheels are non-run-flat MICHELIN PILOT SUPER SPORT tyres measuring 255/35 ZR20 front and 285/30 ZR20 rear. Representing the latest in ultra-high performance tyre technology available today, they feature a running surface which is made up of 2/3rds soft compound (centre) and 1/3rd hard compound (outside and flanks). This mixture makes for excellent durability despite typical hard use in high-performance vehicles, yet provides very good grip in the wet. Enhanced tread stability and a new flank reinforcement technology ensures the tyre is less likely to suffer from spikes in temperature with a resulting loss of grip in the dry.

To fulfil the seemingly contradictory demands for comfort, everyday usability and dynamic handling, the D5 Bi-Turbo is equipped with electronically-adjustable dampers (Drive Performance Control). This system has been artfully calibrated by ALPINA, and is tied into other system parameters controlling steering assistance, torque cushioning and the Dynamic Stability Control system. Featuring pronounced Comfort+, Comfort, Sport and Sport+ settings, the D5 Bi-Turbo transitions effortlessly from cultivated luxury to thorough-bred sportiness. Light steering, ultra-comfortable suspension and an imperceptibly shifting transmission make the D5 Bi-Turbo an ideal partner in stop-and-go traffic, when covering great distances or when encountering less than perfect road surfaces. Yet at the touch of a button, the D5 Bi-Turbo will track through tricky corners and along exciting sections of road with an agility and light-footedness like no other in its class.

DESIGN

Personalised to every taste
BMW’s designers have outdone themselves – the form and shape of the BMW 5 Series is without doubt elegant, modern and very cohesive. ALPINA design cues and aerodynamic components integrate easily into the overall design of both the Saloon and Touring, providing a more powerful and dynamic appearance in a subtle manner.

The front, which is commanding and powerful, features an ALPINA front spoiler designed according to aerodynamic guidelines and which is also principally responsible for effectively guiding air-flows to components of the cooling system and the brakes. In combination with the rear spoiler (Saloon), the D5 Bi-Turbo’s total aerodynamic package yields the highest levels of safety and stability, especially at high speeds. The resulting reduction in lift, speed-dependent, can reach -80% front and -10% rear.

The smooth and elegant rear features ALPINA trademark two double-ended tailpipes which are artfully integrated into the rear valence which features a discreet diffusor. The diffusor can be deleted as needed, should the customer desire the optional ability to tow a trailer.

The interior reveals subtle features which one is accustomed to from ALPINA and which highlight the D5 Bi-Turbo’s exclusive pedigree. The standard equipment level is comprehensive, featuring amongst other things a leather interior, adjustable sport seats, Xenon headlamps and Park Distance Control. The hand-stitched LAVALINA leather SWITCH-TRONIC steering wheel can be positioned exactly as needed to see the blue ALPINA instruments with black-panel LCD technology. The classic ALPINA burled Myrtle wood trim provides a warm ambience – found only on the USA’s Pacific Coast it is cultivated from dedicated Laurel tree groves grown for just this purpose. Optional ALPINA Piano Lacquer interior trim with its silver diagonal rhombs, offers a modern and just as exclusive alternative.

The new GS 350 brings out a an all-new sheet design, a much roomier cabin and the cutting-ede technology from Lexus, and competes in a segment with the BMW 5 Series, Audi A6 and Mercedes-Benz E-Class.

The model introduced to journalists at Pebble beach is the five-passenger, rear-wheel-drive GS 350. The 2013 GS looks much more aggressive than the previous model. The car has a wider track and aggressive wheel arches, a significant improve over the “soft design” in the previous generation. The automaker has indicated that the 2013 GS 350 will serve as a preview of things to come from Lexus.

A series of aerodynamics features dominate the exterior design, starting with the L-shaped taillights, as well trunk lid and fully functional front air inlets. The redesigned front-end stands out with the twin blade-like chrome strips that flank the trapezoidal grille.

Taking a play from BMW, the interior design focuses much more on the driving experience and the driver. Lexus said it changed the driver’s seating position providing “increased comfort, better forward visibility, and overall command of the road.” The GS 350 features added leg and knee room. To successfully complete in a segment where premium features are combined with practicality, the trunk space is increased by 25 percent, with a wider trunk opening.

The cabin’s most impressive feature is the massive 12.3-inch screen. The screen is capable of supporting high-definition graphics, and can be split to show both a large map, audio or climate control information, similar to the big screen offered in many BMWs. Additionally, a second high-resolution 8-inch display is located in the instrument panel. This second display can be used with Lexus’ Remote Touch system, which allows the driver to operate climate, audio, navigation and phone controls from steering wheel-mounted buttons.

The 2013 Lexus GS 350 is powered the same 306-horsepower DOHC 3.5-liter direct-injection V6 mated to a six-speed sequential shift automatic transmission with paddle shifters and a multimode selector. All-wheel drive is optional. The power gets a bump to 306 hp and 277 lb-ft of torque. Lexus claims a 0-60 mph time of around 5.7 seconds. The electronically limited top speed gets a slight bump up to 142 mph, from 140 mph.

Power-wise, the BMW 5 Series offers the same 306 hp, but with 295 lb-ft of torque. The direct competitor, BMW 535i, is powered by a TwinPower single turbo 3.0 liter engine and runs to 60 mph in 5.6 seconds.

The wheelbase of the new 5 Series is also longer at 116.8 in in vs 112.2 in for the GS 350, with an overall length of 192.8 in vs 190.9 in.The width is measured at 73.2 in vs 72.4 in for the Lexus.

In the weight department, the BMW 535i is the overweight premium sedan with a curb weight of 4,056 lbs versus 3,715 lbs reported by Lexus.

It has never been more difficult to select the correct company car especially if a business is considering vehicle contract hire for the first time. There are so many car manufacturing companies that are vying for pole position in the company car market, but one car manufacturer is doing so with a vengeance and that is BMW. BMW are synonymous with leading edge technologies, superior luxury and have more recently been striving to produce much more energy efficient vehicles for both the private user and the business user.

One of the most popular BMWs when it comes to UK BMW leasing deals is the extremely efficient 5 Series. There has been no better times for companies to consider the BMW for their vehicle contract hire requirements. One of the most popular BMWs in United Kingdon is the 520d 2.0 SE Saloon.

The vehicle combines the success of the brand with efficiency and professionalism. The standard BMW 520 is available with manual transmission and as a four door model is perfect for any company considering to build their executive fleet. The 2.0 SE model is also extremely efficient in terms of CO2 at 129g/km.

Although the BMW 520d SE vehicle is a popular option for corporate fleets, the 520d EfficientDynamics edition is an even safer bet. The launch will take place in September 2011 and it is envisaged that this vehicle will provide companies looking to lease efficient cars more alternatives regarding vehicle fleets. The 520d ED promises to be one of the cleanest cars on the road – emissions are extremely low at 119g/km and this of course triggers the tax break that many executive company cars fail to attain. BMW have been striving to design a company executive vehicle that will reflect greener, more eco-friendly policies and the 520d ED design will ensure this and much more for companies that want to consider leasing efficient company cars that meet government eco strategies.

It is also important to mention the fuel efficiency of the BMW 5 Series. The 520d SE is quite obviously the diesel model – but it is fair to mention that advances in diesel technology now means that it is the fuel of choice for many forward looking companies. This is mainly due to the fact that diesel is more efficient in terms of miles per gallon. The 520d SE averages between 54 and 57 mpg.

The choices for companies considering a corporate car fleet can be difficult, many products from Audi, Mercedes, Lexus or Infiniti are viable options. Continuing their EfficientDynamics strategy, BMW sees the new the 5 Series as one of their most important vehicles, and United Kingdom remains an important market for the premium automaker. The new 5er Sedan caters to a wide audience, from the aforementioned car fleets to executives and families looking for the ultimate driving machine with fuel efficiency, premium features and luxury into a single package.
