Just a few weeks ago, the new entry level Sports Activity Vehicle from BMW, X1, made its debut in Europe. Those of us that live in the U.S. would have to wait until 2011 to see the X1. Automobile magazine Autoweek shares with us their impression of this car that BMW has high hopes for.

“BMW has been spectacular in its reinvention during the past decade. It moved away from traditional volume-selling models, often becoming the first European luxury-car maker to enter important new market niches–much to the chagrin of Audi and Mercedes-Benz, which have attempted to follow its lead.

But if you thought BMW had every luxury niche covered, think again. With the arrival of the X1, it has become the first European luxury-car maker to make a compact SUV, setting up a likely sales battle against class favorites such as the Toyota RAV4, the Honda CR-V and, from the Europe perspective, the Volkswagen Tiguan and the Ford Kuga.

Slotting beneath the X3–which will grow in size, performance, features and price when a U.S.-built, second-generation model arrives next year–the X1 represents another part of BMW’s plan to achieve more than 2 million sales annually by 2020. It isn’t set to reach North American showrooms until mid-2011, 18 months after it goes on sale in Europe but ahead of the planned arrival of rivals such as the upcoming Audi Q3, Range Rover LRX and Mercedes BLK.

The exterior shape of the X1 was first revealed on a lightly veiled concept at the 2008 Paris motor show. The new four-door follows the BMW trend toward taut surfacing, edgy detailing and provocative shutline architecture. The smallest of BMW’s X-cars is slightly shorter and narrower but taller than the 3-series Touring, the wagon version of BMW’s most popular model, with which the X1 shares its 108.7-inch wheelbase and much of its mechanical hardware, engines included.”

Press Release

If you like to drive fast and topless, here you are seated just right. The dual turbo six-cylinder car from ATT out of Rastatt convinces primarily through its increased engine power to spectacular 362 hp and 536 Nm.

The tuner offers two power enhancements. At power level I (2.355,00 Euro) the 335i achieves 345 hp and 481 Nm by the use of an additional controller. At power level II (4.130,00 Euro) the bi turbo achieves entire 362 hp and 526 Nm – therefore accountable is not just the additional controller but also the stainless steel sport exhaust system, which adds to the ideal output effect.

Big ATT TEC LeMans 20″ wheels emphasize the futuristic appearance of the ambitious athlete. The aluminum rims in the dimension 8,5×20″ and 10×20″ with high performance tires from Michelin “Pilot Sport 2″ size 245/30 ZR20 and 285/25 ZR20 are worth 3.475,00 Euro, mounting and balancing included.

New in the range are the design fender in M3-optics. For 1.843,00 Euro you can get these from ATT already with original M3-louver, boxes, mounting accessories and LED blinker. For additional 597,00 Euro the fender can be ordered in Rastatt in car body color.

Furthermore a complete carriage and interior program is already available!

Inside Line has the story of the day: BMW plans to bring the highly awaited four cylinder diesel engines to the U.S. If you have been a long reader of our website, you probably remember the rumors that started a year ago and then recently they somewhat become more real.

BMW is indeed planning for new diesel engines in the U.S. offering a smaller displacement. Along with the new diesel four bangers, we also expect to see the gasoline ones as well.

While the six cylinder diesel in the 335d is being considered a great performer and performance engine, BMW plans to offer a downsized oil-burner that will provide similar performance as the six cylinder, but far more fuel efficient.

The four cylinder diesel engine will make its debut in the 2011 BMW X1 SAV, the new entry level built by BMW in Austria.

Tom Baloga, BMW of North America’s Vice President of Engineering, says: “This engine needs to match the acoustic qualities of a 6-cylinder,” Baloga said, “and it needs to match the performance, as well as performing better in terms of fuel economy and emissions. The target is to produce enough horsepower to be comparable [in performance] to our N54/N55 six-cylinder turbos.”

Will the four cylinder diesel top the award winning six turbo diesel? So it seems like and that is one of the most exciting news we’ve heard in a while.

The new engines are expected to make into the new X3 and X5 models as well and if half the rumors are true, the next generation BMW 3 Series will also feature them.

While the information has never been officially confirmed, Inside Line posts an interesting disclaimer on their site:

“The Inside Line article never explicitly mentions turbos, but does say, “Our four-cylinder diesel will be so good that people will readily accept it as a replacement for six-cylinders. The target is to produce enough horsepower to be comparable [in performance] to our N54/N55 six-cylinder turbos.”

Personally, we’re quite excited to hear these news and after reading Andrew’s article on the BMW 123d, we’re even more sold it.

With a unique combination of High Tech engineering and an innovative, solely for maximum power constructed design, LUMMA Design introduces, in cooperation with G-Power, one of the fastest limousine worldwide. Do you need a true-bred sports car for a spectacular appearance?

By no means! With this unique sports limousine CLR 730 RS LUMMA Design, basic vehicle BMW M5 E60, benches many sport cars. Ten cylinders, bi compressor engine, 730 hp and 700 Nm. Is there any room for improvement? Definitely not! The new LCR 730 RS from LUMMA Design is a commitment to racing. But also concerning style and luxury the CLR 730 RS goes strong.

Aerodynamics is of elementary importance to get a more then 360 km/h maximum speed. The body of the BMW M5 is improved with ultra light but extremely compact carbon components. The LUMMA Bodykit “CLR 730 RS” consist of a hood, a trunk lid with integrated tearing edge, mirror caps, door handles, entrance strips and fenders – all made of carbon.

The LUMMA chassis brings true racing technology on the street. The sport suspension is multiple adjustable on both axles in bound and rebound and lowering the car up to 45 mm.

Extra light and forged wheels were produced for the ultra broad track. On the front axle are LUMMA Racing rims in 10×21” with tires size 255/30-21, on the rear axle 12Jx21 with tires from Michelin size 295/25-21. The wheelwork is three piece crafted, the rim star is forged, and dull black anodized and has stainless steel outer rims.

Because of the combination of lightweight, enormous engine power and innovative aerodynamics the LUMMA CLR 730 RS from Winterlingen achieves acceleration times which were so far only subject to true race cars. The 730 hp V10 bi-compressor engine obstructed from G-power is the most powerful engine that has ever been obstructed into a road-legal BMW. Off the top off one’s head the car catapults itself within 4.2 seconds up to speed 100. After 10 seconds the sport limousine has already doubled the speed. After 29.5 seconds the car achieves 300 km/h. Top speed is at 367,4 km/h. This power explosion is traced back to the core of the G-Power compressor system, the ASA radial compressor. Also used is a LUMMA sport exhaust system with 100 cells racing catalysts and 105 mm end pipes made of stainless steel and engraved LUMMA logo.

Of course LUMMA Design does not count on the original brake system. Also at this the best just isn’t good enough. LUMMA Design obstructed a 6-pistons (rear axle 4-pistons) brake system, which affects on the front- and rear axle on a drilled brake disc dimension 405 mm (380 mm).

The cockpit of the CLR 730 RS unites a pure racing look in a combination of carbon, leather and Ultra suede with the comfort that is nowadays expected from a luxury sport car. The comfort features are: a bicolor complete leather interior in red/white with stitched diamond patterns and white fancy seems. The Ultra suede improvement includes the dashboard, the seat consoles and the coverages. All panels on the dashboard and the center console, the transmission control, the steering wheel, the hand brake lever and the backside of the sport seats are beautified with carbon. Finally everything is completed by suede car mats edged with leather, a trunk mat and sporty aluminum pedals and a footrest.

17 years after winning the World Championship in 1983, BMW returned to Formula One as an engine supplier. The BMW WilliamsF1 Team celebrated ten victories, 17 pole positions and 45 podium finishes between 2000 and 2005. In 2005 BMW acquired the majority share in the Swiss Sauber AG and sent its own team into battle for the first time the following year.

To date the BMW Sauber F1 Team has 304 World Championship points to its name. In 2008 Robert Kubica claimed the teams maiden pole position in Bahrain, while the 24-year-old and his team-mate Nick Heidfeld achieved a magnificent one-two at the Canadian Grand Prix in the same year.

In 2007 and 2008, BMW Sauber team scored the second and third place in the Teams World Championship. With sadness, BMW exists the Formula 1 championship at the end of this season leaving the impression that more could have been achieved.

The fellas over Sport-Cars are back with another review of an AC Schnitzer model. Based on the BMW M3 Coupe, the AC Schnizter ACS3 Sport Coupe takes the powerful M car to a new level when it comes to vehicle tuning.

Unfortunately for us living in the U.S., we don’t have access to these vehicles, but we’re going to rely on our European friends to relate all their findings and of course, the photos we all crave for.

Review translated with Google (not perfect, but it will get the point across):

“Let’s be very honest from the start. The AC Schnitzer X6 Falcon takes you from point A to point B in comfort and it’s a head turner with its design lines and custom wheels. In comparison, the AC SchnitzerM3 goes unnoticed (well almost), until you press that gas pedal…… Small gesture, big consequences! The sound that emerges when two titanium exhausts will awake all bystanders…..

The AC Schnitzer ACS3 provided for this review develops 450 horsepower versus the 420 hp in the base version. Also, an impressive 420 Nm of torque through a revised electronic box, an air box pieces and a line of titanium exhaust. In this version, the ACS3 whispers as a 6 cylinder at low speeds, but past the 3,500 rpm it roars until it reaches the red zone.

After reaching 100 km / h (4.8 seconds), it must then attack the first curve and it is with joy that we can count on the brakes signed AC Schnitzer (front and rear), suspension tested on the northern loop Nurburgring tires and 245/30/20 front (wheels 9 x 20) and 295/25/20 rear (rims in 10.5 x 20).”

The BMW Group and the SGL Group have agreed on the establishment of a joint venture for the production of carbon fibres and textile semi-finished products (CFRP) for use in vehicle construction. The total investment volume is € 90 million in the first development phase, the two companies stated on Thursday.

The joint venture will be operated through two companies, one based in North America (SGL Automotive Carbon Fibers LLC), and the other in Germany (SGL Automotive Fibers GmbH & Co KG). The BMW Group holds 49% of the shares, and the SGL Group 51%. The two groups will be equally represented in the management of the two companies; major corporate decisions must be made unanimously by both partners. The joint venture will initially create around 180 new jobs in North America and Germany. Its establishment is subject to approval by the cartel authorities.

“This joint venture is designed to be a classic win-win situation. We are acquiring pioneering future technologies and raw materials that we need for our Megacity Vehicle on competitive terms. The SGL Group is moving into the automobile business with us as a strong partner”, BMW AG Management Board Chairman Norbert Reithofer emphasised in Munich. “With our concepts within project i, we are breaking new ground when it comes to vehicle architecture, lightweight design and the use of materials”, Reithofer continued.

Robert Koehler, CEO of the SGL Group, stated: “This joint venture with the BMW Group is a milestone for the use of carbon fibres on an industrial scale in the automobile industry. For the first time, carbon fibres are taking on an important role in series vehicle manufacture. This confirms our strategy and shows that carbon fibre technology is becoming increasingly important in the materials substitution process to lighter material. This material will help to reduce CO2 emissions and save our natural resources“.

Lightweight design has been one of the core skills of the BMW Group for decades – after all, reducing weight is a major factor in cutting fuel consumption. In the use of high-tech Carbon fiber reinforced plastic (CFRP), the company is also able to draw on its many years of experience. CFRP not only plays an important role in motor sports; the material is also used in series vehicles, such as in the roof of the BMW M6 Coupé.

In the Megacity Vehicle, which will be launched under a BMW sub-brand in the first half of the next decade, the high-strength yet ultra-light material will make up a significant proportion of the materials used. The combination of the advanced CFRP fibres developed by the SGL Group and the BMW Group’s expertise in the industrial manufacture of CFRP components is making it possible, for the first time, to install CFRP on a large scale in a series vehicle at a competitive cost.

With the joint venture, the BMW Group is underlining its position as the most sustainable vehicle manufacturer. This claim is reflected throughout the entire value creation chain, from component purchasing to recycling. Producing CFRP in a way that protects resources is therefore a high priority. The high energy requirement for the production of carbon fibres is to be met completely by environmentally friendly hydropower. This is one of the preconditions for the production site of carbon fibres in North America. The raw material is then processed into a carbon fibre fabric at the second location in Germany. Parts and components will then be made from this light-weight durable fabric within the BMW Group.

The votes are in and….the popular site …..”Popular Mechanics” names the 2010 BMW 335d as the “Best Luxury Vehicle”. The annual Automotive Excellence Awards focus on a variety of categories, from “Best Vehicle Design” to “Best Fuel Efficiency”.

The 335d needs no further introduction, I’ve been saying for months that if I had a choice a few years back, the diesel would have taken over the 335 gasoline, but that’s just another story. With their latest performance diesels, BMW hit the jackpot when it comes to combining luxury, performance and efficiency and the multiple awards they’ve won, confirm that.

So, let’s see what PM has to say about the only 3er diesel in the U.S.

“In the future, the word ”luxury” might describe automotive qualities quite different from what we imagine today. When sedate and sensible fuel sippers dominate the automotive landscape, luxury could define the ability to produce sports car acceleration with exemplary fuel economy. The BMW 335d is ahead of that curve.

Under the hood is a twinturbocharged 3.0-liter inline six-cylinder diesel, with a mammoth 425 lb-ft of torque that can return solid mileage. In fact, on a recent 390-mile PM test, we saw 33.6 mpg. It takes only one brief prod of the right pedal to know the BMW has an incredible motor. The rush of torque is not unlike an old-school big-block V8’s. Reeling in lesser cars is not only effortless, it’s tantalizingly fun. And this diesel model fits right in with the rest of BMW’s 3 Series lineup, offering fluid, organic steering and a chassis that encourages you to press on just as hard as the road and your bravado will allow. Yet this BMW rides comfortably and absorbs potholes with a muted “thump.”

Luxury cars don’t have to be one-dimensional. The 335d blends luxury, performance, fuel economy and fun into one very rewarding package.”

As our editor Andrew said in a previous article, the BMW 320si is a “hidden pearl”, a car known in the BMW community as a real driver’s car. Browsing Germancarzone today, came across a member of this forum, Nikos who has just taken ownership of a gorgeous 320si model.

Since the car was never available for the U.S. market, some of you might have overlooked it or simply never heard of it. No worries, we’re here to refresh your memory and …..to make you a bit jealous, just as we are at this moment.

In late 2005, when BMW announced its new E90 entrant for WTCC, BMW had to homologate the 320si by producing 2,600 road-going versions to compete. A lucky few in countries outside the U.S.(typical) were able to snatch up the low production series cars when they were first sold.

While the 320Si is only a 2.0 liter, 4 cylinder engine, it produces 175 horsepower (275 horsepower in full race spec) and comes without Valvetronic as it limits the revving and performance capabilities of the engine. Even better, the engine was hand-built in the United Kingdom in the same BMW engine plant that also builds the engines for the BMW-Sauber Formula One program.

The 320Si came in sedan form and could only be purchased with a manual transmission. The sedan was decked out with the then-new M Sport body kit and custom 18 inch Style 216 wheels – straight off of it’s race car brethren. The major difference from the race-spec 320Si body and road-going version was the widebody kit front and back – and the racing livery along the sides!

For full details on the BMW 320si, we encourage all of you to read the press released issued years ago.

Special Model with the DNA of Motorsport: The BMW 320si Saloon
BMW now offers the customer with a particular penchant for motorsport a limited edition version of the 3 Series Saloon restricted to a total production volume of just 2,600 units: the BMW 320si. Featuring the M Sports Package and 18-inch wheels in the same design as the racing version, this special model boasts a fast-revving 2.0-litre four-cylinder power unit developing maximum output of 127 kW/173 bhp at 7000 rpm. This kind of power ensures a top speed of 225 km/h or 140 mph and acceleration to 100 km/h in just 8.1 seconds.

Exclusivity in Limited Edition.
Over and above a sporting suspension set-up, the M Sports Package featured as standard on this special model comprises BMW’s Aerodynamics Package with modified bumpers and side-sills, sports seats, an M leather steering wheel, an M footrest, foglamps and interior trim in aluminium. Further standard features are 18-inch wheels running on 225/40R18 tyres at the front and 255/35R18 tyres at the rear. The radial-styling 216 rims measuring 8 and, respectively, 8.5 inches in width and proudly bearing the BMW Motorsport logo come from BMW’s FIA World Touring Car Championship (WTCC) racing car.
Apart from the mirror caps in high-gloss satin chrome, the chrome-plated exhaust tailpipe also shows the connoisseur that this is the very special BMW 320si. And the red zone in the rev counter starting at 7300 rpm and ranging all the way to 8000 rpm again proves that this 3 Series is indeed a very special car.
In addition to the six colours generally available on the 3 Series Saloon with the M Sports Package, the 320si is also available exclusively in Carbon Black Metallic.

The heart of this exclusive limited edition model is the high-speed four-cylinder power unit displacing 2.0 litres and developing maximum output of 127 kW/173 bhp at 7000 rpm as well as peak torque of 200 Nm/147 lb-ft at 4250 rpm.
Compared with the regular production model, cylinder bore is up by 1.0 mm to 85 mm or 3.35″, while stroke has been reduced by 2.0 mm to 88 mm or 3.46″. Instead of cast-in grey-cast-iron liners, the pistons run in special aluminium-alloy liners stacked into the engine block. Further signs of distinction on the crankdrive are the stiffer connecting rods as well as a reinforced bedplate structure.
In creating this high-speed power unit, BMW’s engine development specialists intentionally decided not to use BMW’s fully variable VALVETRONIC valve drive. Instead, they opted for conventional valve management with two overhead camshafts, rocker arms and four valves per cylinder. Doing without numerous moving components in this way, the valve drive guarantees a high standard of stiffness and precision even at extremely high engine speeds both in the limited edition model and in racing.

Components from BMW’s Formula 1 Factory.
The cylinder head is an all-new development from the ground up, with the rough castings coming from the Formula 1 foundry at BMW’s Landshut Plant. Both the intake and outlet ducts as well as the combustion chambers are processed with supreme precision and surface quality by computerised machine tools. Together with the larger valves and the modified flange contours on the intake and outlet side, this ensures optimum fuel/air mixture formation. And the final point is that special spark plugs masterminded by single ignition coils initiate the combustion process.
The compression ratio raised from 10.5 to 11.0:1 also helps to boost power by 17 kW/23 hp over the “regular” model, while the engine nevertheless still runs on 95 RON premium fuel, just like the “standard” version.
Formula 1 technology is also to be found and admired in other engine components such as the rocker arms coated in a special process developed specifically for BMW’s Formula 1 power units.

The four-cylinder in this new special model reaches its peak output of 127 kW/173 hp at 7000 rpm, with engine speed being limited to 7300 rpm. Thanks to the intake system with variable intake manifold length (DISA) and variable camshaft adjustment (bi-VANOS), torque is up to a maximum of 200 Nm or 147 lb-ft at 4250 rpm.
To take the high temperatures in motorsport into account, BMW’s engine specialists have focused in particular on the flow of coolant optimised by large cross-sections in the cylinder head. The radiator in the six-cylinder models, in turn, ensures a good balance of temperatures at all times.
The cylinder head cover made of special carbonfibre makes an important contribution in reducing the weight of the car by approximately 10 kg or 22 lb versus the BMW 320i. Proudly displaying its qualities at very first sight, the cylinder head cover not only demonstrates a direct link to motorsport, but also lowers the engine’s centre of gravity by reducing weight at the highest point.
The engines are largely hand-built by specialists at BMW’s Hams Hall engine plant, from where they go straight to the assembly process at BMW’s Production Plant in Munich. The BMW 320si is available exclusively in Europe with both left and right-hand drive.

Sporting Agility and Superior Handling.
The six-speed manual gearbox of the BMW 320si is laid out to give the car its top speed of 225 km/h or 140 mph in sixth gear. With its unladen weight of 1350 kg or 2977 lb (DIN), this sporting high-performance saloon accelerates to 100 km/h in just 8.1 seconds. Acceleration from 80 – 120 km/h or 50 – 75 mph in fourth gear, in turn, takes an equally fast and impressive 7.7 seconds. And last but not least, it almost goes without saying that the BMW 320si complies with all the requirements of the Euro 4 emission standard, consuming just 8.9 litres/100 km in the composite EU fuel consumption cycle (equal to 31.7 mpg Imp).
Through its concept alone, the new Edition Model enables the driver to enjoy motorsport at its best: The fast-revving four-cylinder responds immediately to the accelerator pedal, offering even greater agility and an even more dynamic response than in the BMW 320i. The engine has a powerful and sporting sound without in any way becoming loud or obtrusive, responding dynamically to the gas pedal and immediately giving the driver the power and performance he – or she – desires.

The sporting and ambitious driver will also appreciate the fact that the engine develops an even stronger braking effect when taking back the throttle, in comparison with a VALVETRONIC power unit. This is because engine load management is controlled in this case by a conventional throttle butterfly.
In conjunction with the short final drive (4.10) and the M sports suspension with 18-inch wheels running on large tyres at the front and even wider tyres at the rear, the BMW 320si allows a very sporting and dynamic style of motoring without coming uncomfortably close to the extreme limit. Thanks to its equal and well-balanced axle load distribution, in turn, this exclusive Sports Saloon also excels through neutral behaviour and superior agility on the road – which explains why the experienced driver at the wheel of the BMW 320si is able to lap the legendary Northern Circuit of Nürburgring in less than nine minutes.
To properly cope with the even more powerful engine, the BMW 320si comes with an even larger and more powerful brake system: Both front and rear inner-vented 16-inch disc brakes ensure optimum acceleration at all times. And this very special car also features extra-large wheel mounts.
Limited to 2,600 units, production of the BMW 320si entering the market at a price of Euro 32,150.- will be starting in spring 2006. The car will be making its world debut at the Geneva Motor Show in March of next year and BMW dealers will be taking orders as of December 2005.

The Foundation for Motorsport.
Proceeding from the Limited Edition BMW 320si, BMW Motorsport has developed a racing version with engine output of no less than 275 hp. This motorsport version of the BMW 320si will be raced worldwide in 2006 in the FIA World Touring Car Championship (WTCC) and other racing series held under the Super 2000 Regulations, which means that BMW will be continuing its long and great tradition of customer sport also in the year 2006.
Touring car racing is indeed BMW’s most successful racing discipline so far, with the Company bringing home more wins and victories in this category than anywhere else: Twenty-four FIA European Championships as well as the so far only World Championship ever awarded in 1987 and the new Championship in 2005 – this is the impressive list of achievements proudly boasted by the BMW brand. And in the last two years, BMW, racing the 320i in the European Touring Car Championship, has brought home not only the Manufacturer’s Title, but also – in 2004 – the Driver’s Championship.
In 2005, finally, BMW won both the Driver’s (Andy Priaulx) as well as the Manufacturer’s Title.
Now the motorsport version of the BMW 320si seeks to continue this unique story of success.

In 2009 the BMW Berlin plant can look back on a 40-year tradition as the production site for BMW motorcycles, with over 1.9 million BMW motorcycles having come off the assembly line to date. With the anniversary motorcycle “40 years of Berlin” based on the BMW roadster R 1200 R, BMW Motorrad not only celebrates its 40th anniversary of production at the Berlin-Spandau plant but will also support the children’s rights organisation “Save the Children” by auctioning the exclusive motorcycle on eBay.

“Supporting young people through educational activities has been part of our corporate culture for many years,” says Hendrik von Kuenheim, Director of Motorcycles in the BMW Group. “It gives us great pleasure to be able to make a small contribution to a social cause in Berlin and its surrounding area by auctioning this unique model.”

The 80 kW (109 hp) R 1200 R “40 years of Berlin” is a unique specimen constructed especially for this purpose at the Berlin-Spandau plant, fitted with the legendary BMW flat twin “boxer” engine which has been enhanced with numerous features as compared to the serial production model. For example, it has special fittings such as a chrome exhaust system, ABS, white direction indicators, heated grips, on-board computer, low comfort seat bench and the Sport windshield.

The refined appearance of the R 1200 R “40 Years of Berlin” in mojave brown with white lines highlights the special BMW accessories incorporated such as chrome cylinder head covers and rear mirror and cover caps for the Telelever and fork bridge. This special model also features classic wire spoke wheels to mark 40 years of manufacturing tradition at the Berlin site. The rear frame and headlamp casing in silver finish form a classic, aesthetically appealing contrast to the painted body features.

The BMW 1200 R “40 Years of Berlin” will be exhibited from November 10th – 15th 2009 at the international motorcycle trade fair EICMA in Milan.

The auction on eBay at www.ebay.de/starsandcharity starts immediately after the EICMA on November 16th 2009 at 12 midday and ends on November 25th 2009 at 12 midday.

“Save the Children” (www.savethechildren.de) was founded in 1919 and is today the largest independent children’s rights organisation in the world, operating in over 120 countries. The main focus of its work lies in the area of school and education, protection from exploitation and violence, survival and health – especially in the wake of catastrophes.

The proceeds from the motorcycle auction will be donated to the project “Mitwirkung in Sicht” (“Participation in sight”) being run by BildungsCent e.V. and supported by “Save the Children”. In this project, young graduates trained in education go into schools as coaches and work together with students, teachers and parents to develop non-violent methods of conflict solution. By involving them at an early stage, the project helps strengthen children’s rights as well as helping to create a positive school climate in the long term.

“Participation in sight” will be run in seven primary schools in and around Berlin in the academic year 2009/2010.

With every vehicle launched, a new series of BMW designers rise and leave their footprint in BMW’s car design history.

Since over the last tens of years there were numerous designers, we will break down the impressive and long list of “automobile artists” giving you a series of short episodes.

But, we’ll do it differently this time around. Instead of going in chronological order, we would like to teach you the BMW car designers history backwards.

So, let’s begin with the yet to be unveiled 2011 BMW 5 Series.

Born in Opglabeek in Belgium, Paesen spent his youth living in different countries, he moved with his parents across Europe and to South Africa; he was educated in England at Transportation Design Dept. of Coventry University and at Royal College of Art in London (Master 2001); he became known for his exceptional drawing skills – his automotive images are recognized as pieces of art and sold as limited edition prints; during his studies in London, he designed for the contest of Helen Hamlyn Research Center a taxi of the future called SW7; it was meant to ride safely almost like a golf car through London pedestrian streets with a driver and two passengers. Directly after his studies, Paesen started his designer career at Volkswagen (2001), before moving to BMW in 2006, where he works as a car interior designer; he designed the interior of the new BMW Vision EfficientDynamics concept car using innovative layering technology.

Kim, an automotive designer, finished Art Center College of Design (BS, 2004). Created the BMW Hydrogen Powered Salt Flat Racer – a concept of the racing car built reusing ordinary materials like used oil barrels and old barbecue lids as the main building material of the car chassis and wheels.

Kim also designed the body of the BMW X1, the new entry level Sports Activity Vehicle that launched last year as a prototype in Paris and it has been recently revealed in its production form.

In our next episode we will talk about the BMW 5 Series GT, CS Concept and some yet to be revealed BMW models.

One of the most popular car comparisons out there is back once again: 2009 BMW 335i vs. 2010 Audi S4. The fellows over at Car and Driver decided to challenge the two sport sedans that have been competing in the same class for quite some time.

While most of the time, the BMW 335i comes out as a winner, the fellows at C&D seem to have a different opinion this time and the S4 gets their vote. Of course, some of these comparisons can be based on personal preferences, but before we jump into any conclusions, let’s take a look at their review.

We’ll boil it down: Forget the Audi’s as-tested price of $59,425 and the BMW’s $49,320 tab. This story is about how a $50,675 Audi S4 (the base price plus the performance-vital Audi drive select but minus all the nonessential luxuries we’re assiduously ignoring because we’re trained professionals) meets a $48,470 BMW 335i (base price plus all the requisite options to match the S4’s standard equipment) on virtually equal treads. Before you howl about the Audi’s higher price, recall that it also has standard all-wheel drive. [See sidebar for why we didn’t compare it with an all-wheel-drive 335i xDrive.]

Consider: Both the S4 and the 335i are four-door sedans with 3.0-liter, force-fed six-cylinders and redlines starting at 7000 rpm, and both hail from autobahn-honeycombed Germany. It’s the perfect two-car duel—a concours a deux, says a man who wears Boss. Does Audi want this bad enough? Let’s gas ’em up and see.

Why We Nixed the AWD Bimmer – Comparison Tests
Before you start cranking out toxic verbiage about our selection process, listen to our side of it. Audi’s competitive target for this S4 is BMW’s 335i xDrive (the all-wheel-drive variant). Don’t we, by the natural laws of the universe, have to compare the AWD S4 with BMW’s AWD version of the 335i, the so-called xDrive?

We don’t. We think the 335i in rear-drive mode is the more compelling performance package. So why penalize the BMW just because the S4 only comes in all-wheel drive? The rear-drive 335i is roughly 200 pounds lighter and has better weight distribution: 50.8 percent over the front axle versus 52.1 for the AWD xDrive. When the rear-drive BMW includes the Sport package, it rides an inch closer to the ground than the xDrive, lowering the center of gravity, which improves handling and reduces weight transfer. But add that Sport package to an xDrive, and you don’t get the lowered, sport-tuned suspension.

Mario-Roman is famous for his extraordinary photoshoot sessions, especially when it comes to cars. In the past, we’ve seen some of his work on the new Z4 and now, he has returned with a series of 5 Series GT photographs.

The new niche model from BMW, 5 Series GT, has launched recently during an international press event that took place in Lisbon, Portugal. In a couple of weeks, the 5 GT will officially launch in the U.S. as well, with the high-end 550i GT model being the only one available to order at the moment.

Before we dive into the photo gallery, here is a recap on the 5 Series GT. Based on the platform of the new BMW 7 Series, the 5 Series GT was built on the same principle that made the original Gran Turismo vehicles so popular: a high-performance luxury automobile designed for long-distance driving. The 5 Series Gran Turismo tones down the front-end of the 7 by offering a more attractive and easier accepted design.

The design of the 5 Series GT started in late 2005 with the first sketches, but the actual design process began in 2006. The new BMW 5 Series GT takes the interior design of a BMW at the top of the luxury scale and for the first time, BMW has designed the car from the inside out.

Without a doubt, the new BMW 7 Series has served as a starting point for the 5 Series GT and not only from the platform sharing aspect. The 4.4 liter V8 engine will power the highest-end model to be sold in the United States: 550i GT. As seen in the 750i, the V8 twin-turbo produces 400 horsepower and 450 lb-ft of torque. All this power is sent to the rear wheels through the new ZF 8-Speed automatic transmission. At the end of 2010, a 5 Series GT xDrive will be made available as well.

A 535i GT model will also be available in 2010 powered by the new N55 twin-scroll engine.

Illinois based modding shop, WheelSTO, reveals their latest work: a restyling of the popular BMW 335i Sedan. With some help from our friends over at IND-Distribution, they gave the stock 335i an advanced makeover.

For those of you interested in this type of modding, let’s take a look at some of the parts used on the 3er:

- set of Volk Progressive ME wheels, sized 19×8.5 and 19×9.5

- Hankook Ventus V12 tires

- KW coilovers to lower the car

- Helix Intercooler and AFE DCI

- Eurocharged for a Stage 2 tunning

To add more styling, 35% window tint, headlight covers, and Carbon front and rear Roundels have been added as well.

The result? A tasteful 335i that stands out without overdoing it.

While we were visiting Germany for the Frankfurt Auto Show, we decided to include in our trip an extensive test drive of the BMW X6 xDrive30d. Great car, fun and fast, but maybe not the most fuel efficient choice we could have made.

Well, our friends over at Mwerks decided to go that route and jumped behind the wheel of a BMW 320d, a four-cylinder 2.0 liter diesel that outputs 177 horsepower at 4000 rpm and 221 lb-ft of torque

The 3311-pound coupe runs from0 to 60 mph in about 7.7 seconds and tops out at 144 mph. BMW 320d Coupe is rated at 49 mpg on the European combined cycle.

That’s the quick intro, but let’s have a look at the review and great photos posted by Bryan.

As impressive as this sounds on paper, it doesn’t mean much if the real-life experience is a letdown. Having spent the majority of this year alternating between a Jetta TDI (the most popular diesel car in America) and a 335d sedan (a car that totally eradicates all preconceptions of what a diesel power is all about), we had a pretty good idea what to expect. Namely, we expected the kind of refinement we’ve come to trust from our 335d (if not the Jetta), but with a much more typical diesel power delivery (not terribly exciting, as with the Jetta). We know that most Europeans are willing to suffer with dismal athleticism if it means paying less at the pump, and while we were hoping the 320d wouldn’t be a total performance dud, we did set our sights intentionally low.

There’s something to be said for setting low expectations; by doing so we were actually blown away by how “normal” the 320d felt. It possesses virtually all the requisite refinement of any modern BMW. The one notable exception — as an American, anyway — is the typical, unmuffled clatter of a small-displacement diesel at idle (its engine note is entirely indistinguishable from that of any other oil-burning four-banger). Aside from that, there’s nothing about the way this car drives that sets it apart from most other 3-series coupes.

With all that torque from such a low engine speed, the 320d pulls away from stops with the kind of fervor BMWs are generally known for. The lightweight engine loves to rev — at least in diesel terms — to its 5000-rpm redline. In urban driving, the sweet spot is between 2000 and 3000 rpm, where torque progressively yields to horsepower. Keep it in that zone and you’ll have no problem squirting in and out of narrow traffic opportunities. Gearing is perfect for the 30- to 50-mph grind.

Based on the latest spy photos circulating around the web, the german magazine Auto Motor und Sport is giving us their latest rendering of the upcoming BMW 3 Series Coupe facelift. As we have mentioned several times before, both the coupe and convertible will be receiving a minor facelift.

The changes begin at the front-end with a new set of headlights featuring a different “eyebrow”, similar to what we see on the sedan model.A revised front-end bumper will be available as well. At the rear, new LED lights are making their way into the facelift model, along with a redesigned bumper.

Judging by past spy photos, the side mirrors suffered some changes as well.

The exterior changes are accompanied by a revised interior design as well. The 2011 3 Series Coupe and Convertible will receive the ConnectedDrive system which allows for in-car internet access. An improved trim and a new center armrest are rumored to appear as well.

No word on the engine changes, but we hope to see either the upgraded N54 powerplant or the all new N55 (twin scroll turbo).

The two facelifted models will be available at local dealerships in April 2010.

BMW Art Cars Project was initiated by the French racecar driver Herve Poulain in 1975. His first idea was to have his BMW racing car painted in an unique way, and the man hired for the job, was the American artist Alexander Calder. Over time, there were many contributors to the BMW Car Art program, names that include: Andy Warhol, Roy Lichtenstein, Robert Rauschenberg, Frank Stella, David Hockney or Jenny Holzer.

BMW Art Cars have been exhibited by numerous museums and galleries throughout the world, including the Louvre in Paris, the Palazzo Grassi in Venice, and the Guggenheim Museums in New York and Bilbao. These unique cars have inspired many BMW fans across the world and recently we have seen some interesting personal projects.

One our readers based out of Dubai, Sheldon Rodriguez, has turned his 330ci into a replica of a BMW Art Car and the result is impressive. In the next few paragraphs, he will tell us the story behind this project and where the inspiration came from.

Sheldon Rodriguez, Dubai – United Arab Emirates.

“I’m a Visual Interaction Design Specialist by profession and a very passionate BMW fan. Being in a region that is surrounded by exotics and supercars, the desire to customize vehicles as per individual persona’s, it’s really hard not be influenced. Having the advantage of being a designer and understanding art, I was not far off from creating something fairly unique in the region. I have an E46 330i, 2002 model, with a body that has been completely modified, leaving only the roof untouched, and an unique shade of metallic gray with a matte finish. From front bumper to doors and to the rear bumper, I have redone everything from scratch to have a model that gives the feeling of an individual, unique model.

I’ve enjoyed doodled art, a spontaneous form of outline art, and to see this reflected on a Lamborghini really had me in awe. BMW Art cars was an inspiration, especially the one made by Andy Warhol. Over a period of time, there happened to be another BMW fanatic, Travis Todd, who took a bold step in doodling his hood. His project has influenced myself further to have the same art form on my BMW – but this time, taking it to the next level.

The artwork is a collaboration with another artist, Mark Ganzon. Dividing the car into two, the holistic theme was to have the left drivers side make use of sharp angled strokes to depict the evil, while the right passenger side to make use of open rounded strokes to depict the good. All the art was done with three sharpies permanent marker, and was quite a task to have it covered on the surface of a car. There was no pre-planning involved in the drawing process and relied heavily on our design backgrounds. Since we had our full time jobs to focus on, the project was completed after working hours; about 3 hours every evening – the heat and humidity during the summers presented some challenges in having a smooth completion. After three days of intense sessions, the project was completed and the outcome was outstanding. The art was protected with a layer of matte lacquer to retain the original look of the car.

Being a integral part of the BMW Club in the UAE and this project being the first of its kind in the Middle East, I take this opportunity to thank the fellow members of the club and the E46Fanatics.com for being an inspiration.”

Triple success for the BMW Group in the 2009 Internet Auto Award competition. This year the new BMW Z4 Roadster, the Sports Activity Coupe BMW X6 and the MINI E received the CAROLINA trophy awarded by the online portal Autoscout24. The Internet Auto Award competition was held for the eighth time as a European-wide online voting. The award ceremony took place on 1 October 2009 during a gala event held at the Kesselhaus in Munich.

With its fascinating design, which is a modern interpretation of classic proportions authentically reflecting typical BMW Roadster driving pleasure, the new BMW Z4 has been enthusiastically received by experts and the public alike. Only a few weeks ago the Roadster seized the International Design Excellence Award 2009 in the USA, having already won the red dot award 2009 in Germany shortly before that.

The new BMW Roadster now succeeded in the category “Convertibles” in the European Internet Auto Award competition conferred by AutoScout24. Just a few months after its market launch in May 2009, the new Z4 has taken a distinctive lead in its vehicle class, achieving a higher number of sales than both of its main premium segment competitors together.

The BMW X6 has also already collected a number of renowned awards since its market launch last year. The CAROLINA trophy in the category “All-terrain Vehicles” is now being added to the series of successes. As a new vehicle concept within the competitive environment of the BMW X models, the Sports Activity Coupe is characterised by an elegant design and superior, sporty handling characteristics. Dynamic Performance Control, which in addition to the intelligent all-wheel drive technology xDrive ensures variable power distribution between the rear wheels and is featured by the BMW X6 for the first time, had already earned a CAROLINA statue last year for the “best innovation of the year”.

The prize for the “best environmental initiative of the year 2009” goes to the MINI E. The first purely electrically powered model of this brand is currently undergoing tests in everyday traffic conditions within the framework of a pilot project. The MINI E, which was produced as a small series of around 600 cars, is being driven by private users in the USA and can in the meantime also be seen on roads in Munich and Berlin. From these field tests the BMW Group expects to gain knowledge for the development of a purely electrically powered Megacity Vehicle. The MINI E is also scheduled to be tested in the UK, where it is produced, and in France. The MINI E is powered by a 150kW/204 bhp electric motor that guarantees brand-typical driving pleasure with zero CO2 emissions. Its high-performance lithium ion battery offers a cruising range of up to 250 kilometres. The field testing of the MINI E is currently the world’s largest pilot project for the research of electrical mobility. Only a few weeks ago the BMW Group was awarded the EcoGlobe environment prize of the University of Duisburg-Essen for its commitment in this field.

Some of us love wagons, others believe they’re the most practical car ever built, but there is that little group ...

Some of us love wagons, others believe they’re the most practical car ever built, but there is that little group of people that think they’re simply uncool. And then there are the fellows at Automobile Magazine who believe that wagons might return in style. To sustain their case, they remind us of an important segment of people that simply love to haul lots of things.

Now to convince us……. it will take far more than that and they’re not ready to give up, so they decided to compare some of the most luxurious wagons available in the U.S. automobile market: BMW 328i xDrive Sports Wagon, Audi A4 Avant and the American contender, Cadillac CTS Sport Wagon.

Ever since July we’ve been hearing rumors about BMW’s plans to phase out the Sport Wagons in the U.S., of course, in favor of the new “kid on the block”, the ultra-luxurious and spacious 5 Series GT. Up to that date, the 5 Series Wagon sales totaled 395 units for the year, a comparable difference between now and four years ago when the 5 Wagon sales peaked at 2,351 units sold. Unfortunately we don’t have the 3 Series Wagon numbers, but we can suspect they’re not doing much better.

Despite these rumors and even though the wagon market doesn’t seem to be booming, Cadillac decided to bring out their CTS Sport Wagon, a vehicle that is hoping to be an important player in the European market as well. The Audi A4 Avant needs no introduction, the car has been around for a while and Audi fans seem to enjoy it.

But if we were to really eager to buy a Sport Wagon, which one would we choose? Let’s see what Automobile Magazine says about the three contestants.

2009 BMW 328i xDrive Sports Wagon

The 3 Series wagon does an excellent job juggling the duties of both sporty and comfortable driving. Over most roads, the 328i handled bumps and potholes with ease. Still, a few large, sharp breaks in the pavement encountered at high speed did slam the suspension against its bump stops.

There’s good reason that a BMW 3 Series is the safe bet when it comes to buying a car. It provides the comfort and luxury that drivers want every day with the capabilities to perform for the occasional heavy-footed spin. The 328i xDrive Sports Wagon is no exception, offering the same great formula with an extra dose of wagon practicality.

Interesting…we drove the car ourselves in the beautiful, crowded New York City and despite our less of a love for wagons, we liked it.

Next one…

2009 Audi A4 Avant

From afar, the A4 might be best described as an extremely scaled down Q7. Stand a little closer, however, and there’s no mistaking it for anything but a station wagon, with a large, perfectly rectangular storage area that can easily carry a weekend’s worth of luggage.

Unlike Cadillac or BMW, Audi doesn’t offer wagon buyers six-cylinder power. The familiar 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder can’t quite match the output or refinement of its larger-displacement competitors, but it’s nonetheless smooth and potent and offers the fuel economy benefits one would expect of a smaller engine (better than the BMW by a combined 3 mpg, and better than the Cadillac by 2 mpg).

What they see as a disadvantage -no six cylinder engine- some of us look it as an advantage, especially in times where fuel efficiency plays an important role in the car buying decision process.

Last one in the game….

2010 Cadillac CTS Sport Wagon

Although some wagons are dedicated to cargo and/or family transport, the CTS is all about style. With a roof 1.25-inches higher and 200 lbs. added to the curb weight but no increase in overall length, this wagon is the fashion equivalent of wearing a baseball cap with the bill swung rakishly back.

To read the entire review and to see some photos of these wagons, head over to Automobile Magazine, but don’t forget to come back and tell us if:

1. You would consider a Sports Wagon?

2. Which one would you choose?

North American car shows season is just around the corner and journalists across the country are gathering to rank the top automobiles in 2010.

2010 North American Car of the Year top starts with an extensive list of vehicles, but as time progresses, some are being eliminated. On the initial list, BMW was represented by the BMW Z4, X5 xDrive35d, 335d and the new 5 Series GT. After the initial round, three out of four have been eliminated, but the 3 Series sedan diesel continues the race.

BMW has been out of the American diesel market for around 20 years now and they marked their return last year with the twin-sequential-turbocharged 3.0L diesel engine for the newly refreshed 335. BMW’s first 50-state-legal diesel delivers 265 hp at 4220 rpm, and an all too fun 425 lb-ft of torque between 1750 and 2250 rpm. Driving through a six-speed automatic transmission, this engine will propel the 335d from 0 to 60 mph in 6.0 sec while delivering 23 mpg city and 36 mpg on the highway.

The 335d finds itself in the company of some other great cars and it will be difficult to anticipate who advances further, and even harder to predict the big winner.
