We all can dream, can’t we? When we dream it’s said that we are projecting our inner subconscious thoughts and our deepest desires in a consequence free environment. It’s those dreams that make us wake up tomorrow and explore the ideas that seemed impossible last night before we went to sleep and try and make them a reality. Well, the engineers and minds inside BMW certainly live to dream and it has never been more apparent than in regards to a said, “Secret Seven”. No, this post has nothing to do with Agent 007 and his infatuation with Bimmers, but rather an ambitious secret project involving a 7 Series by Dr. Karlhienz Lange, Adolf Fischer and Hanns-Peter Weisbarth.

All three individuals, Lange, Fischer and Weisbarth, were very senior and influential people at BMW during the mid-70’s and up through the early 90’s. Lange was responsible for powertrain developments, Fischer was involved with all obscure development projects and Weisbarth was most famously involved with the E31 8 Series coupe and E32 7 Series. It was from the mind of Lange that came the M70 5.0-liter V12 engine that was used in the 750i and the 750iL. So it only came natural that the Secret Seven project come from someone so ambitious. Lange instructed Fischer to explore the possibilities beyond the M70 engine. And it was from then that the Secret Seven project was born and BMW’s first V16 engine came into fruition.

Less than six months after Lange gave the go ahead on the project, Fischer had a complete (and production ready) 6.7 liter V16 engine on a dynamometer on Christmas Eve in 1987. Naturally the numbers on the V16 engine were nothing short of impressive boasting 408 bhp at 5200rpm and 461 ft lb of torque at 3900rpm, more than 100bhp and 100 ft lb torque than the 5.0 liter V12. Within the walls of BMW, the Secret Seven project was also known as the “Goldfish”. Reason being, the 7 Series sedan that the V16 engine was fitted into was a golden color so the project was christened the Goldfish. Now about that golden 7 series…. Naturally the addition of four more cylinders was going to cause some spacial issues when dropping into an unmodified E32 sedan. Obviously it was important for BMW to keep the modifications minimal, just in case there were ever any plans to bring the Goldfish into productions. Although no such promise existed as Lange told Fischer that although he wanted the project to be production ready, he couldn’t promise it would ever see the light of day.

The V16 engine measured 12 inches longer than the M70 V12 that sat in the bay of the 750i. Extra space in the engine bay was nonexistent with the M70 so the addition of four extra cylinders posed a bit of a challenge. Fischer and his team of engineers did the simplest thing they possibly could and that was to move the cooling system in the E32 into the rear of the car. Naturally this method would never be employed into a production ready vehicle from BMW, let alone any other automotive company, so it was done just for sake of the Secret Seven project and to deem the impossible…. possible. With the cooling equipment in the trunk, engineers hand made custom fiberglass gills and air scoops that sat on the rear quarter panels of the car to channel cool air into the trunk. Air was expelled through a custom made valance panel that sat in between the taillights of the car, which lead to the use of smaller tail lights eliminating the rear high intensity fog and reverse lights.

The engine block of the V16 was made using high silicone aluminum with the pistons running directly inside the bores that had been etched and honed during the manufacturing process so the iron-coated pistons would run against hard silicone crystals. The V12 utilized a seven bearing forged steel crank shaft, so the V16’s crank shafted needed to be modified and utilized a nine bearing crank shaft just as the camshafts did. More modification came in the way of the engine management system. The V12 used two Bosch DME 1.2 units to run two six-cylinder engine and for the added displacement the V16 ran a more powerful Bosch DME 3.3 system that ran the engine as two inline eight-cylinder engines with the own electronically controlled throttle bodies.

Cylinder dimensions, measured 84×75mm bore and stroke, were kept the same as the original M70 motor and raised the dimensions of the motor from 4988cc to 6651cc. Also both valve lift and timing remained the same between the V12 and V16 engines as well as the 91mm distance between the cylinder bore centers. It literally was unchanged except for the addition of four extra cylinders. Why mess with success?!? Just add onto it! One of the most exciting things about the Secret Seven project probably lies within the gearbox…. it’s a six-speed manual! The gearbox was borrowed from an 8 Series coupe due to cost and timing of the project. Numbers on the saloon were certainly impressive, boasting a 0-60 time of 6.0 seconds flat and a top speed of 175 mph. Fuel economy, as one could imagine, wasn’t the greatest with city driving at 14 mpg and highway at 20 mpg, but this isn’t exactly a hybrid were talking about here.

In the prototype phase, the V16 was ready for full production and BMW did consider building a “Super 7″ of sorts but securing approval from the board was too far fetched and the V16 never saw a garage or driveway. As for the question if BMW will ever use a V16 engine in their lineup of large sedans? The answer is, most likely not. Reason being the economic climate and environmental consciousness of the day simple won’t allow it and would go against BMW’s “Efficient Dynamics” mantra for the present day. Unless they made a V16 hybrid…. but that would just me an oxymoron. The “Goldfish” or “Secret Seven” project is just a demonstration of some of the thinking that goes on behind the doors at BMW. Yes, there are enthusiasts behind those doors, probably thinking up more automobile bliss than one can imagine. It’s reassuring to know that BMW isn’t scared to push their engineers and designers to think beyond the standard and offer their public some of the finest automobiles on the road.

Many of us would have loved nothing more than to see the V16 make it onto the roadways, but hopefully projects like this will continue to inspire engineers and designers to always push the envelope.

UK magazine Autocar is one of the first auto publications to sit behind the wheel of the upcoming BMW Active Hybrid 7. The first production ready BMW hybrid uses a different electric drive setup from the X6 Hybrid and it’s being considered a mild hybrid. The system was developed in collaboration with Mercedes Benz. The upgraded V8 twin-turbo with High Precision Direct Injection runs together, at the same time, with a 3-phase synchronous electric motor which is positioned between the engine and the torque converter. The electric motor generates approximately 20 hp and peak torque of 155 lb-ft.

The “pumped up” V8 twin-turbo engine produces 40 horsepower more than the engine found in the 750i/Li models to a total of 400 horsepower. The overall combined output is being advertised at 455 horsepower and 516 lb-ft of torque. It runs from 0-62 mph in only 4.7 seconds (as tested by Autocar )

With these preliminary data, let’s take a look at what Autocar reports:

What’s it like?

Despite the advanced technology and various modifications – all of which add 100kg to the kerb weight – the Active Hybrid 7 instantly feels more muscular than the 750i, thanks to the added power and extra torque.

The upshot is a car that wafts along serenely at town speeds and can be coaxed into a rapid cruise at ridiculously low revs; the combined efforts of the petrol engine and electric motor provide the Active Hybrid 7 with enormous low-end urge and a pleasingly relaxed gait at motorway speeds that is further enhanced by the 7-series’ excellent gearing and overall refinement.

BMW’s claim that the Active Hybrid 7 boasts the performance of a V12 is fully backed up by the claimed 0-60mph time of 4.9sec, which makes it 0.3sec quicker than the 750i.

Given the performance, its combined cycle consumption of 30.1mpg and CO2 rating of 219g/km is outstanding, also bettering the 750i by 5.3mpg and 47g/km respectively in short-wheelbase guise.

The petrol engine shuts down when you brake to a standstill to conserve fuel, leaving you contemplating the silence until you step away from the brake again, at which point the big V8 bursts back to life. There’s no characteristic turbine whirl of the starter motor because there is none. Instead, the automatic stop-start function is achieved via the main electric motor.

Alpina, the automobile manufacturing company based in Buchloe, unveiled earlier this week their latest model based on the BMW 7 Series. The Alpina B7 BiTurbo long wheelbase version is similar to the shorter B7 which debuted at Geneva Motor Show in March.

Powered by a V8 4.4 liter twin-turbo engine, Alpina manages to squeeze out 507 horsepower and an impressive 516 lb-ft of torque. Official numbers show the Alpina B7 LWB running from 0 to 60 mph in 4.8 seconds.

The speed limit has also been raised to 173 mph (280km/h). The B7 uses the automatic “SwitchTronic” gearbox, of course, rear-wheel-drive transmission. All that power and balance needs to be kept in place, so Alpina packs the B7 with 245 and 285 tires, and sitting on custom 21″ wheels branded now with the famous Alpina logo.

Now all of these technical terms sound impressive on paper, but how about we take a look at some of the latest wallpapers and enjoy the amazing design from Alpina.

The folks over at Automobile Mag got their hands on the new 760Li, BMW’s newest flagship, the $137,000 high-end luxury sedan. Before we jump into the review, let us give you a quick summary on the new 7er.

The new BMW 760i and 760Li are powered by a completely new 6.0-litre V12 all-aluminum engine with Twin-Turbo Technology, High Precision Injection with fuel injected directly into the combustion chambers, and to BMW’s infinite double-VANOS camshaft adjustment as well as the eight-speed automatic transmission featured for the first time in a BMW.

The V12 engine outputs 544 horsepower at 5,000 rpm, with maximum torque of 533 lb-ft at 1,500. The wheelbase has been extended by 5.5 inch providing more passenger space and comfort.

While we’re anxiously waiting for our own test car, let’s take a look at their review.

That’s right – not only does the 760Li have power to spare, it has an abundance of gears, too. Between the enormous engine and the abused rear tires lies a ZF automatic transmission with eight forward speeds – the most ever in a BMW. First gear is used only in Sport mode and at the risk of leaving behind a cloud of tire smoke. Eighth is superlong for relaxed cruising – the engine turns over at an almost inaudible 3600 rpm while oozing down the autobahn at its governed top speed of 155 mph. Allowed to run free, the 760Li could attain another 50 mph or so, and it’s precisely these tremendous performance reserves that make the BMW flagship seem so relaxed even in the fastest traffic.

Double-glazed windows ensure that only a whisper of wind noise enters the cabin. Equipped as standard with almost every option available on lesser 7s, the 760Li is a rolling technology showcase whether you’re up front or in the capacious rear seating area. Many of BMW’s newest driver-assistance systems – blind-spot detection, lane-departure warning, rear- and sideview cameras, high-beam assistant, and a head-up display – are included in the price of entry. Integral active steering (which varies the steering ratio in addition to using the rear wheels to steer the car) is also standard.

European auto shows are also the place to be for all the major car tuners. Every two years, ALPINA is present at the Frankfurt Auto Show, each time displaying an impressive fleet of “tuned up” BMWs.

Several Alpina models have been displayed there, but this time we’ll focus on the high-end B7, a vehicle based on BMW’s 7 Series.

From the enhanced aggressive look to all the changes that took place underneath the hood, the B7 is positioning itself as the ultimate sports sedan. The new B7 is powered by a V8 4.4 liter twin-turbo engine outputting 505 horsepower and an impressive 517 lb-ft (700Nm) reached at 4,750 rpm.

It runs from 0 to 62 mph in just 4.7 seconds, compared to the regular 750Li which stops the clock at 5.3 seconds. Alpina B7 is electronically limited at 174 mph (280km/h). The B7 uses the automatic “SwitchTronic” gearbox, of course, rear-wheel-drive transmission.

As expected, the fuel economy is not too great on the B7, official estimates place it at 13MPG (17 liter/100km) city driving, 27MPG (8.6 liter/100km) highway and combined at 20MPG (12 liter/100mk).

The Alpina B7 weighs 4,312 lb (1,960 kg), still lighter than the 750i or Li production models and it sits on some beautiful Alpina-style 21 inch wheels. All that power and balance needs to be kept in place, so Alpina packs the B7 with 245 and 285 tires.

While the B7 is not a world premiere, it is still quite exciting to see it in person.

Yesterday we started our second phase of the “Be A Designer” project with the new BMW 7 Series being in the center of attention. To stat on the same subject, the new 7, we are going to show you a new review of the car, this time published by Motor Trend.

Overall the new BMW 7 Series F01/F02 has been well received by the BMW community and most of the reviews we have seen were quite positive, including ours.
Does Motor Trend share the same feelings?

But let’s take a look at this new review:

Okay I’ll come right out and admit I’m one of the haters. The iDrive era 7s and I have never gotten along. I’ll be the first to grant that this iDrive is WAY better than the old ones. In fact, there’s quite a lot to like here. The new styling is pleasing from most angles (the nose is maybe a bit blunt from pure profile). The displays are superb. I’m not sure I’ve ever used a better head-up display (it disappears when you wear polarized glasses, but I think there’s no avoiding that). The reverse camera image is higher definition than I can recall seeing in any other recent lux machine.

You can read the full article here, but let’s focus for a moment on their last paragraph:

I suppose the 7 Series may be the best handling of the leviathan luxobarges, but who cares? How much time will owners spend at the limits of adhesion in such a large car? I spent my week trying to shuttle three passengers around in comfort, which I think is more the idea of these whoppers. And the 7 just isn’t great at this task. Between a heavier-than-necessary throttle and possible turbo lag or jerky transmission response, it’s trickier than it should be to waft smoothly and swiftly away from a stop. No, I’d take an S-class today or maybe wait to sample the new Jag XJ. I remain uninterested in the 7.

We’ve come to realize that each car has different “owners”, to some the new 7 was still too soft, even in Comfort, while to others is simply to harsh. Same car, different perception, but it is somewhat expected. As far as the turbo lag….sure, there is tiny lag in there, but it is far from being noticeable by many people and truth is that these turbocharged engines have come a long way.

It’s the new 7 Series the perfect car? No, most likely it isn’t, but as we said before, it’s the best, for now, in that segment. When the new S-Class will come out, a more accurate comparison would be available.

Apparently the economic crisis has not hit the entire world and BMW has scored a major single sale this week: 132 740i and 740Li models have been purchased by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia.

The vehicles handover took place during an official ceremony at the BMW Welt in Munich and BMW was represented by Ian Robertson, Member of the Board of Management of BMW AG, Sales and Marketing.

The 7 Series limousines will be used by the Saudi Arabia embassies across the world.

The Kingdom of Saudi Arabia is a growing market and it is becoming increasingly important for BMW.

Compared to last year, in the first half of the year 2009, BMW sales saw an increase of 24% more new cars. Today, the Kingdom is the largest importer of the BMW 7 Series in the Middle East region.

From January to June 2009, there were 617 BMW 7 Series sold, representing an increase of 124% over the previous year.

100% ActiveHybrid. 100% Pure Joy. This is the punch line that BMW is using to promote their first hybrid vehicles available for the general consumer.

At least on paper, the two BMW hybrids seem to maintain the sportiness that characterizes the BMW brand while still being more efficient than the standard models. The X6 Hybrid and 7 Hybrid, while share the same core ideas on fuel efficiency, they are still using quite different technologies.

The ActiveHybrid 7 uses a different electric drive setup from the X6 Hybrid and it’s being considered a mild hybrid. BMW ActiveHybrid X6 features a two-mode hybrid system which allows the X6 to run either on its electric motors alone at low speeds, internal combustion or a combination of both.

The ActiveHybrid 7 uses its V8 twin-turbo with a 3-phase synchronous electric motor which is positioned between the engine and the torque converter.

If you’re interested in finding out more about the differences between these two hybrids, feel free to check out our previous article.

In the mean time, we’re going to share with you some high quality wallpapers and also some links to the Multimedia interactive websites that focus on these two hybrid models.

On the heels of the ActiveHybrid X6, today BMW announced the production version of the all-new BMW ActiveHybrid 7, which will also premiere at the Frankfurt Auto Show (IAA) in September. The BMW ActiveHybrid 7 will reach America shores in Spring, 2010. Based on the newest BMW 7 Series, this unique car sets new standards for performance and efficiency in the premium luxury class.

This symbiosis of an upgraded twin-turbo, High Precision Direct Injection, V8 engine with a 3-phase synchronous electric motor gives the BMW ActiveHybrid 7 a combined output of 455 hp and maximum torque of 516 lb-ft (preliminary figures). Power is transmitted via an 8-speed automatic transmission with the electric motor positioned between the engine and the torque converter. The electric motor receives its supply of energy from a lithium-ion battery developed specifically for use in this automobile.

Precisely controlled interaction of both power sources serves to maximize the efficiency and dynamic performance of the BMW ActiveHybrid 7. The result is a unique driving experience that demonstrates the performance capabilities of modern hybrid technology. The BMW ActiveHybrid 7 accelerates to 60 mph in 4.8 seconds (preliminary), while delivering fuel economy approximately 15% better than the 750i. Official EPA ratings will be available closer to the US market launch.

BMW ActiveHybrid technology also provides new features that promote efficiency while preserving comfort. As an example, the BMW ActiveHybrid 7 is the first BMW with automatic transmission to feature Auto Start Stop to maximize efficiency by avoiding engine idling when stopped. Another advantage is that the air conditioning and ventilation system remains fully operational when using Auto Start Stop. In this case, power is supplied directly through the 120-volt on-board network powered by the lithium-ion battery.

Special displays in the instrument cluster and the Central Display inform the passengers of the degree of efficiency and the current operating status of the hybrid components. The ActiveHybrid 7 is distinguished from the 750i by aerodynamically-tuned ten-spoke 19-inch light-alloy Aero wheels, and model designations on the trunk lid, C-pillars, and on the door cutouts. The BMW ActiveHybrid 7 is also available in Bluewater Metallic exterior paintwork.

Like existing BMW 7 Series models, BMW’s first luxury sedan with ActiveHybrid technology will enter the market in two body variants. The extended version of BMW ActiveHybrid 7 has a wheelbase increased by 5.5″, all of which is devoted to the enhanced comfort of rear-seat passengers. Both models are available with a wide range of options from the portfolio of equipment and accessories offered on the BMW 7 Series, enabling the tailoring of the ActiveHybrid 7 to individual tastes and requirements.

BMW ActiveHybrid: A key element of the BMW EfficientDynamics philosophy.
The BMW ActiveHybrid 7 takes an innovative approach to ensure outstanding efficiency in this segment. At the same time this unique sport sedan offers dynamic driving characteristics at a level that one would expect from The Ultimate Driving Machine. BMW ActiveHybrid is an important element within the BMW EfficientDynamics philosophy meant to offer technologies able to significantly reduce fuel consumption and emissions on every new model while enhancing driving performance.

BMW uses hybrid technology because it can make an effective contribution to the reduction of fuel consumption and emissions. As a rule, the savings potential of hybrid technology increases with the power of the combustion engine interacting with the system. In the case of the BMW ActiveHybrid 7 precise coordination of the electric motor and the V8 serves to optimize the efficiency of the combustion engine under all operating conditions.

Intelligent energy management for generation, storage and use of electric power.
The ActiveHybrid concept stores energy in a compact, high-performance lithium-ion battery. The processes of charging the battery, supplying power to the electric motor, and electric ancillaries are managed by a control unit developed specifi¬cally for the BMW ActiveHybrid 7.

Energy Regeneration:
Electric power captured using no extra fuel.
BMW ActiveHybrid technology uses energy that would be normally converted into heat through the brakes, and therefore wasted in conventional cars. The BMW ActiveHybrid 7 features an enhanced version of Brake Energy Regeneration already used in some current BMW models running on a combustion engine alone. In this case the integrated electric motor acts as a generator when coasting or applying the brakes, in order to feed electric power into the battery. Brake Energy Regeneration converts some of the vehicle’s kinetic energy into electric power for the on-board network whenever the driver lifts off the accelerator or applies the brakes. On acceleration, electricity is fed back into the on-board network from the lithium-ion battery. This sequence relieves the combustion engine from the task of converting some of its fuel energy into electric current, and thus enables the engine to provide more power directly to the rear wheels. The result is better acceleration even than the 750i, despite the fact that the additional power is obtained in a way that does not require additional consumption of fuel.

When the driver requires only a small amount of brake force, the system uses only the drag of the electric generator (motor). The mechanical brakes are activated only when the driver presses down the brake pedal harder for more stopping power. Dynamic Stability Control controls the balance of electrical and mechanical braking so adeptly that the driver does not even perceive the transition from braking with electric power to braking with the mechanical brake system.

Two interconnected on-board networks for flexible management of energy.
The BMW ActiveHybrid 7 features both a conventional 12-volt on-board network fed by an absorbent glass mat (AGM) battery and an additional battery featuring lithium-ion technology operating at 120-volts. The lithium-ion battery supplies power to the electric motor as required and serves to start the engine. Electric power generated by Brake Energy Regeneration is fed into both on-board networks. The air conditioner compressor on BMW ActiveHybrid 7 is integrated in the 120-volt network. All other electrically operated functions of the car are supplied by the 12-volt network. The two on-board networks are connected by a voltage converter featuring flexible energy management. Both batteries are charged and maintained through Brake Energy Regeneration. The 12-volt battery is fed with energy from the high-voltage network.

Cutting-edge battery technology: lithium-ion with superior capacity and multi-cycle operating strength.
BMW found that lithium-ion battery technology offers sufficient energy storage capability while taking up minimal space. The result is that the BMW ActiveHybrid 7 gives up almost no luggage capacity to its conventional siblings (750i and 750Li), because the 120-volt battery is small enough to be mounted underneath the trunk floor. Furthermore, the weight penalty incurred by this battery is minimal, meaning less energy is consumed to carry it. Using this technology enables the ActiveHybrid 7 to maximize storage capacity and acceleration in the hybrid luxury sedan segment. It is the fastest-accelerating hybrid sedan in the world.

The useful energy provided by this high-performance battery is 400 watt-hours. The battery itself is comprised of 35 cells and an integrated control unit which continuously analyzes the charge level and ensures appropriate dependability under all conditions. Despite its high level of performance, the lithium-ion battery measures just 14.6 x 8.7 x 9.1 inches (37 x 22 x 23 centimeters) and weighs a mere 59.5 lb or 27 kg.

Hence, it is only slightly larger than a conventional car battery and is housed conveniently in the trunk floor between the wheel arches of BMW ActiveHybrid 7, safely surrounded by a high-strength special casing. This location provides protection for the battery and helps to preserve the 7 Series’ ideal 50-50 weight distribution. The luggage compartment with its capacity of approximately 13 cu. ft. offers adequate space for four 46-inch golf bags.

Twin-turbocharged V8 gasoline engine with High Precision Direct Injection.
The combustion engine is the innovative reverse-flow V8 introduced in the BMW X6. The world’s first V8 gasoline engine with two turbochargers in the V-section between the two rows of cylinders develops power throughout the entire engine speed range. The spontaneous and direct response of this engine results from its compact configuration, which allows the shortest exhaust manifolds.

Displacing 4.4 liters, this outstanding engine delivers its maximum output of 440 hp between 5,500 and 6,000 rpm. Peak torque of 475 lb-ft is maintained from 2,000 to 4,500 rpm, with High Precision Direct Injection ensuring precise supply of fuel at all times. Piezo-injectors positioned in the combustion chambers between the valves ensure a smooth, efficient and clean combustion process. The engine fulfils the European EU5 standard as well as the ULEV II standards in the US.

Compared with the engine featured in the BMW 750i/Li, this version has been modified in numerous respects to the specific requirements of the BMW ActiveHybrid 7. There is no starter, alternator, or belt drive for the air-conditioning compressor and hydraulic pump. The cooling system has been modified for hybrid operation. The result is remarkable power from idle. The response of the engine is enhanced by the electric motor with its additional torque. The direct response to the accelerator pedal is impressive when compared either with conventional 7 Series models or existing hybrid vehicles already in the market. Acceleration to 60 mph in 4.8 seconds (preliminary) ranks it among the fastest and most thoroughbred sports cars in the world. Top speed of BMW ActiveHybrid 7 is electronically limited to 150 mph.

Electric motor starting and supporting one of the most advanced V8s.
The three-phase synchronous electric motor featured in BMW ActiveHybrid 7 is positioned between the engine and the torque converter, and is connected to the crankshaft. Shaped like a disc, the electric motor weighs 50.7 lb (23 kg). Its compact design ensures full integration in the transmission housing.

The electric motor generates boost of approximately 20 hp and peak torque of 155 lb-ft. When operating as a generator in Brake Energy Regeneration, the electric motor produces approximately 27 hp of brake force.

In total, the BMW ActiveHybrid 7 features a maximum system output of 455 hp and peak torque of 516 lb-ft (preliminary). Normally, this level of power output would require a correspondingly high increase in fuel consumption. The BMW ActiveHybrid 7, in contrast, combines its power with an equally impressive increase in fuel efficiency of about 15%.

8-speed automatic transmission in combination with Auto Start Stop.
To transmit the drive power developed jointly by the V8 and the electric motor, the BMW ActiveHybrid 7 features a newly developed 8-speed automatic transmission specifically tailored to the demands of hybrid technology. This high-tech transmission combines shift comfort, sportiness and efficiency at unprecedented levels.

The new 8-speed close-ratio automatic transmission uses an inno¬vative gear-set configuration providing two additional gears and a larger overall gear range than the 6-speed automatic transmission used by BMW without negative effects on size, weight, or internal efficiency. With the new transmission, the V8 engine is better able to stay in the power peak while ensuring greater overall efficiency.

Overall efficiency is further enhanced with the Auto Start Stop function. Auto Start Stop automatically switches off the combustion engine at idle, eliminating fuel consumption when stopped. Once the driver’s foot comes off the brake pedal, the engine restarts instantaneously.
Starting of the V8 engine is accomplished by the electric motor, which is supplied with power from the high-voltage battery. This enables the engine to start extremely quickly and without any vibration. The automatic transmission is maintained in a “ready-to-drive” mode by a new hydraulic pressure accumulator for the valve body of the transmission. Additionally, the engine control unit “remembers” engine crank position and uses delay-free ignition to restart the engine in less than one crank rotation. The engine is also switched off when the driver uses the Auto Hold function. The driver just has to slightly press down on the gas pedal in order to reactivate the engine.

Continuous climate control in all circumstances.
The climate control system in the BMW ActiveHybrid 7 is supplied with power directly from the high-voltage battery, thus ensuring all the usual functionality regardless of whether the engine is running.

Hence, operation of Auto Start Stop does not compromise the infotainment or climate system operation. The desired interior temperatures are maintained consistently, regardless of how frequently or for how long the engine shuts off.

The standard 4-zone automatic climate control has a parked-vehicle function activated whenever desired by remote control. This feature serves to cool down the interior in hot weather before getting into in the car. The highly efficient air conditioning system can reduce in interior tem¬perature quickly and efficiently by more than 50 degrees Fahrenheit, providing pleasant starting conditions in an appropriately cool and pleasant passenger compartment. By running on pure electric power, the air conditioner compressor begins cooling the car more quickly than in a conventional system.

Efficiency made visible: special display concept.
Featuring Black Panel technology, the instrument cluster in the BMW ActiveHybrid 7 is supplemented by an energy flow display in the lower section of the tachometer, a blue arrow shows the current status of Brake Energy Regeneration. When accelerating, an additional graphic display illustrates the boost effect generated by the electric motor.

Using the iDrive control system in the Central Display, the driver is able to see a detailed view of the interaction between the V8 engine and electric motor. Beyond the current charge level of the lithium-ion battery, this display also shows the real-time flow of energy. As an alternative to this graphic display, the system can analyze the current efficiency. In this case a bar graph, which is updated every minute, shows the efficiency levels achieved by the hybrid components during the last fifteen minutes.

Cutting-edge suspension technology for maximum control and comfort.
When the new BMW 7 Series was introduced in 2009, it set new standards for comfort and driving dynamics. The double-wishbone front suspension and an enhanced Integral-V rear suspension provide the ActiveHybrid 7 with the ride comfort one would expect of a BMW sport-luxury sedan with the handling and control of a sports car.

The long-wheelbase version of BMW ActiveHybrid 7 includes self-leveling rear suspension. Both models are fitted with BMW’s vehicle speed-variable Servotronic power steering as well as Driving Dynamics Control. The driver is able to choose the preferred shock absorber setting, the appropriate operation of Dynamic Stability Control, the shift character of the automatic transmission, as well as the throttle response and Servotronic steering assist.

The brake system on the BMW ActiveHybrid 7 provides excellent stopping power in every situation. Inner-vented discs and floating calipers front and rear guarantee resistance to fade. The ActiveHybrid 7 comes standard with 19-inch light-alloy rims in an aerodynamically optimized ten-spoke Aero turbine wheel design, unique to this model. Likewise, runflat tires measuring 245/45 R19 front and 275/40 R19 rear enable the driver to continue even after a complete loss of pressure at a speed of up to 50 mph for up to 150 miles. As an added measure of security, the Tire Pressure Monitor will warn the driver if ever the pressure in any of the tires drops more than 20 percent.

ActiveHybrid safety systems.
The safety concept for the car’s hybrid components is comprehensive. All components in the high-voltage system feature full insulation and special plug connectors. The lithium-ion battery is protected by a high-strength steel housing and is positioned between the wheel wells in the luggage compartment, and has already been subjected to a wide range of crash tests. Last but not least, the entire high-voltage system is automatically switched off within a fraction of a second in case of a malfunction or collision.

Best of Hybrid: flexible development for optimized concepts on each model.
The hybrid components featured in BMW ActiveHybrid 7 were developed jointly by BMW and Daimler in a cooperation project seeking to develop and test components for hybrid drive in luxury performance cars. Apart from the electric motor and the lithium-ion battery, this joint venture also served to develop the power electronics for the high-voltage network featured in the BMW ActiveHybrid 7.

Each manufacturer subsequently integrated the hybrid components into the respective model in accordance with individual, brand-specific requirements. One of the unique characteristics of the BMW ActiveHybrid 7 is exemplified by the combination of an electric motor with a V8 engine.
BMW ActiveHybrid is based on a modular principle which, following the Best of Hybrid strategy, ensures perfect integration of the optimum component in vari¬ous vehicle concepts. Hence, the mild hybrid concept of the BMW ActiveHybrid 7 is tailored ideally to the specific requirements of this model as is the full hybrid concept for BMW ActiveHybrid X6, which will arrive at BMW Centers later this year.

I’ve driven the new BMW 750i for about a week or so, but for some reason, I have failed to see this feature. The Edmunds guys were more agile and discovered this option buried within the iDrive menu options.

So what is the “Gentlemen Function”? It’s that switch to the left on the door. The standard definition states that the front passenger seat can be adjusted with the controls of the driver’s seat once you press a switch located on the driver’s door.

While our buddies at Jalopnik call the naming convention a bit “chauvinistic”, we decided to look past that. Sure, a better translation could have been chosen, but that’s beside the point now.

So how is this feature useful? Let me start with this question: how many times you, as a driver, had to lean over to adjust the front seat position so passengers can get into the car easier either through the front passenger door or rear? Many times? Well, here is where this feature come in handy and allows the driver to adjust the seat by using his own controls.

Looking beyond any naming convention or real-life usefulness, we find it interesting that the engineers look at all the potential obstacles when it comes to usability and accessibility.

A new definition of maximum security: The new BMW 7 Series High Security. With the launch of a new generation ...

A new definition of maximum security: The new BMW 7 Series High Security. With the launch of a new generation of high-security sedans based on the BMW 7 Series, the leading supplier of premium vehicles meets the most stringent safety requirements for persons at risk while traveling in their vehicles.

Both the BMW 760Li High Security and the BMW 750Li High Security are the first models in the world to be certified to BRV 2009 and both vehicles meet the requirements of the new ballistic protection level VR7. Due to their highly effective protective armour, the non-transparent body areas of the BMW 760Li High Security and the BMW 750Li High Security meet the requirements of the ballistic protection level VR9.

Hence, both the BMW 760Li High Security and the BMW 750Li High Security provide optimum safety in the individual mobility segment in combination with unparalleled comfort of travel, superior drive technology and an abundance of innovative equipment features to guarantee confident motoring at all times.

The two BMW high security sedans set new standards in the protection of persons at risk while traveling in their vehicle. The unique security concept is based on findings which BMW gained as a result of its determined development work and on more than thirty years of experience in security vehicle engineering. The security concept was developed parallel to the production model and the integration of safety components is an integral part of the vehicle production process at BMW’s Dingolfing plant. Specific chassis components are perfectly adapted to the increase in weight due to the sedans’ armour plating. Hence, reinforced suspension, dampers and suspension strut top mountings are part of the model-specific component range. This approach ensures finely-tuned vehicle performance characteristics that cannot be achieved by retrofitted armor plating.

Reinforced vehicle-specific armour plating made from special steel as well as newly developed safety glazing protect the passenger compartment in particular from attacks of all kinds. The passenger compartment is protected by armour plating of the doors, the roof, the pillars, the front footwell and the separation wall between passenger and luggage compartments. The steel panels, which were manufactured by means of a special technique, fit the body contours perfectly. The model-specific gap sealing ensures that critical areas such as door cut and body joint lines are safely sealed. The sedans’ undercarriage is armoured by special plating which was developed with a particular focus on maximum explosion protection. Another new development is the sedans’ 2.4” (6 cm) safety glazing. Due to its innovative structure, the multi-layer laminated glass cover provides a unique level of resistance. The window panes are covered with a polycarbonate layer on the inside in order to prevent shattered glass particles from penetrating the interior.

Driving dynamics and comfort on a par with production models. Even with the highly effective security equipment, both the exclusive character of the interior as well as the driving dynamics that are typical of BMW 7 Series luxury sedans has been virtually retained. Despite their extensive safety equipment, both the BMW 760Li High Security and the BMW 750Li High Security can hardly be distinguished from the corresponding production models.

The sedans’ high protection level, which is second to none, is combined with a prestigious appearance, outstanding comfort of travel and an impressively powerful drive system. Both the BMW 760Li High Security’s twelve-cylinder engine and the BMW 750Li High Security’s V8 engine offer a combination of all-aluminium design, BMW TwinPower Turbo Technology and High Precision Injection with direct fuel injection. Both power units are distinguished by their energetic power delivery from a low number of revolutions, the running smoothness that is typical of BMW luxury sedans and their state-of-the art efficiency. Despite the increased weight of the vehicle, the engine performance characteristics of both models ensure that the new high-security sedans can achieve a dynamic acceleration from standing and a confident engine torque at all speeds. Both models have an electronically limited top speed of 210 km/h. The newly developed V12 unit of the BMW 760Li High Security unleashes its superior power of 400 kW/544 hp at an engine speed of 5,250 rpm. Peak torque of 750 Nm comes at 1,500 rpm. In combination with the newly developed eight-speed automatic transmission, the 6.0-litre twelve-cylinder engine impresses drivers not only with its outstanding running smoothness, but also with its ability to spontaneously translate its seemingly infinite power reserve into precisely adjustable driving dynamics anytime. The BMW 760Li High Security accelerates from zero to 100 km/h in as little as 6.2 seconds. The 4.4-litre eight-cylinder engine of the BMW 750Li High Security is the first petrol engine of its kind with turbochargers that are located in the “V” space between the cylinder banks. The V8 engine achieves 300 kW/407 hp at engine speeds of between 5,500 and 6,400 rpm. It mobilizes a maximum torque of 600 Nm that is maintained between 1,750 and 4,500 rpm. The spontaneously delivered engine thrust is applied to the rear wheels via a six-speed automatic transmission.

The BMW 750Li High Security accelerates from 0 to 100 km/h in 7.9 seconds. The BMW 760Li High Security as well as the BMW 750Li High Security are distinguished by particularly harmonious driving characteristics. Both the comfort and the active security features of both models correspond to the premium quality standards that are typical of the BMW 7 Series. The innovative and in part exclusive BMW driver assistance systems ensure that potentially dangerous traffic situations can be foreseen and avoided, thus allowing for confident motoring. The combination of a double wishbone front axle with an integral V rear axle provides numerous benefits in terms of comfort and dynamics, but above all, it results in an outstandingly harmonious handling of curves, virtually eliminating rolling, swaying or tilting behaviour. Moreover, the BMW 760Li High Security and the BMW 750Li High Security are equipped with an electronically controlled Dynamic Damping Control. The dampers adapt to the road surface as well as to the style of motoring. The high-performance braking system ensures excellent deceleration values in all situations. Inner-vented discs and sliding calliper design for optimum efficiency on all four wheels provide extreme stability and maximum braking comfort. Run-flat tyres are equipped with temperature sensors and a separate tyre pressure monitoring system for each wheel. Special options for individual security requirements.

Just like the range of comfort options, the security package for both the BMW 760Li High Security and the BMW 750Li High Security can be adapted to suit individual requirements. An intercom system with concealed microphones and speakers allows safe communication with people outside of the vehicle without the need to open doors or windows. Additional safety options include an assault alarm, fire extinguishing system with temperature sensor for extinguishing fires in the engine compartment and below the vehicle as well as irritant gas sensors for protecting passengers from gas attacks. If the interior protection system is triggered by excess gas levels, all windows are closed automatically, the central locking system is activated, the fresh air valves are closed and the ventilation system is shut off. An additional internal fresh-air supply system ensures that passengers are provided with breathable air.

BMW also offers special options for authorities, governments and embassies. The package provides a range of special features such asflag holders, arrangements for radio installations right through to a gun case with compartments for two machine guns in the center console. Also included is an external beacon with a roof installation system and integrated LED flashing lights for the front grille. Upon request, the vehicle may be fitted with an acoustic signalling system that can be controlled via the iDrive operating system. In order to accommodate this exclusive circle of customers, BMW provides discreet consultancy and personalized sales and service support all over the world. BMW high-security sedans are serviced by certified special garages only.

Access to the vehicles is restricted to very few selected and specially trained personnel. As part of the special customer service, BMW offers special driver training programs for security vehicles.

Just days ago, BMW dealerships across the country reported that the new 2010 BMW 760Li is available to order. With a base price of $136,000, the 760Li is far from being considered a bargain, but so far the media reviews have been unexpectedly positive.

Even though the new 760Li doesn’t differentiate itself by much from the regular 750Li, the technology and performance available in this new model is quite impressive and unique. The top of the line 7er is powered by an all new 6.0 liter V12 Twin-Turbo engine which produces 535 horsepower and 550 lb-ft of torque.

For the first time, the new ZF eight-speed automatic transmission is featured in a BMW model, beside the upcoming 550i GT.

Autocar UK has given the 760Li a fairly positive review and today, our friends at Motor Trend are sharing their thoughts on the 760Li:

John Dillinger, the Chicago gangster, passed away 75 years ago this month. It was he who was said to have written to Henry Ford to compliment him on the excellence of his getaway cars. Okay, the letter, in the Henry Ford Museum, is now thought to be a fake, but were Dillinger still with us, we’d suggest a BMW 760Li might be the perfect replacement for the aging Dearborn jalopy.

For the rest of us, it’s a little hard to spot the point of the 760Li. Does anyone consider the current top Seven, the twin-turbo V-8 750Li, too slow? Too unrefined? Doesn’t BMW look a little flat-footed for launching such an engine into today’s constricted market?

Well yes, the engine (it’s pretty much all-new) was given the go-ahead in better times. Times when it was envisioned the now canceled — or at least stalled — concept CS coupe would have provided another home for the V-12.

But on the other hand, the BMW engineers don’t hide the fact that much of the base engine and its production line are shared with the unit in the forthcoming Rolls-Royce Ghost, which helps defray the cost. And of the 760i and 760Li, global output is expected to be a respectable 10,000 units annually. That’s not a bad little trade. About a quarter of those BMW V-12s will go to the USA and another quarter to China. You read that right: equal sales for the USA and China.

But who are those buyers? People who want the best, says BMW.

While European journalists are currently enjoying the new BMW 760i and 760Li, BMW has decided to publish the official press release filled with all the information around these two new models. To spoil us even more, a series of videos have been posted as well, showing us the interior and exterior design of BMW’s most expensive production road car – the 760Li sells for $136,000 in the U.S.

Here is the press release along with 65 pages of information, technical details and ….more information.

Supreme motoring culture and luxurious comfort in perfection: The new BMW 760i and BMW 760Li twelve-cylinders mark the pinnacle of the fifth-generation BMW 7 Series. Superior powertrain technology, generous space and comfort, and unique features all round create an incomparable driving and traveling experience impressively confirming BMW’s leading position in the global market of luxury performance cars. Two body variants and a wide range of customization options provide a huge margin of freedom for enjoying the exclusivity of this twelve-cylinder luxury saloon in your own, very personal style. Together with the BMW 760i, the BMW 760Li with its wheelbase extended by 140 millimeters or 5.5″ and particular emphasis on rear-seat comfort is also entering the market as the absolute climax in motoring luxury.

The newly developed V12 power unit with BMW TwinPower Turbo technology, -High Precision Injection and double-VANOS infinite camshaft adjustment delivers maximum output of 400 kW/544 hp from engine capacity of 6.0 litres and develops peak torque of 750 Newton-meters/553 lb-ft from just 1,500 rpm. A masterpiece in modern engine technology, the all-aluminum twelve-cylinder power unit stands out through its effortless surge of power, unique acoustic and vibration-damping qualities, and a level of efficiency never seen before in this performance class. Naturally, both the BMW 760i and the BMW 760Li comply in full with the EU 5 emission standard.

Both the BMW 760i and the BMW 760Li come with brand-new eight-speed transmission featured in these outstanding models for the first time. With its innovative gearset configuration, the new transmission offers additional gears while maintaining the dimensions and weight of a conventional six-speed automatic. This makes the eight-speed automatic transmission an ideal match for the power and performance characteristics of the new twelve-cylinder, bringing out the comfort and dynamic qualities of the V12 in particular style. And at the same time the new transmission enhances the all-round efficiency of the car to an even higher standard never seen before.

Auto publications around the world are starting to get some time behind the wheel of the latest revealed BMW model, the 760i and 760Li.

As expected, the performance is quite impressive even when compared with far more sportier BMW model, 0 to 60 mph in 4.5 seconds.

In the U.S., the long wheelbase 760Li comes with a hefty price: $136,000. While we haven’t had our turn yet to drive the car, we will let the fellows at Autocar UK to give us their first impression of BMW’s most expensive production road car.

What is it like?

So how do you distinguish a V12 7-Series from the lesser versions? Other than the badges there are a few tell-tale exterior signs, the most obvious being the quad exhausts, but also V12 labels next to indicator repeaters, and additional chrome detailing. And as with some previous versions, the kidney grille is also more prominent, this time by increasing the thickness of the chrome surround rather than actually enlarging the grille itself.

Inside, as you would expect the interior is packed with toys otherwise optional on other 7 Series models. Bespoke to the 760Li is a particularly plush looking leather and alcantara roof lining and wood trim featuring walnut inlays (other trims are available).

To drive it is, as you would expect given the outputs, very brisk indeed. BMW claims 4.6 second to 62mph, which seems completely believable. Top speed is as usual limited to 155mph, and as a measure of the performance when the limiter kicks in, even doing so gradually, the reduction in acceleration is marked. What the 760Li isn’t though, is a hot-rod in the vein of Mercedes’ similarly priced and S63AMG.

For the most part the BMW’s V12 remains almost completely silent, whether at idle or low to mid range revs, and unless you have an awful amount of space available, you will rarely get the engine spinning much beyond 4000rpm.

The fellows at Car Magazine UK had the opportunity to get their hands on the new BMW 740d which is available in the European market.

The BMW 740d will be introduced in the Fall and will for the first time feature a new straight-six diesel engine with BMW TwinPower Turbo Technology and maximum output of 225 kW/306 hp.

The 740d they tested sported the new optional M-Sport kit, a package of visual rather than dynamic upgrades. Here is an excerpt from the article, but you can read the entire review at Carmagazine.

This is BMW’s third-generation twin-turbo unit, and it is, in a word, brilliant. The 3.0-litre follows the same little-and-large turbo layout as before – the smaller and more responsive blower kicking in low down the rev range, with the bigger unit taking over in the mid-range to red line for a seamless flow of torque.

As well as the all-alloy engine’s fuel injection layout featuring a higher 2000 bar pressure rate, the smaller turbo now features variable vane technology for prompter low-rev response. Which explains why peak torque of 443lb ft kicks in at a very low 1500rpm. Other highlights include BMW’s vaunted Efficient Dynamics to recoup lost energy during braking – it also disengages the alternator, climate controls and other energy sappers when they’re not needed or during hard acceleration.

Get out of the already brisk 730d and into the 740d and while the more powerful car doesn’t feel cor-blimey quicker than the 730d, it does feel far more responsive and alert.

We’re six days into our BMW 7 Series test drive and we’re loving the car more than ever. Our first encounter with the new 7 Series took place in March when a 750Li fell into our hands for a few hours. Of course, the time spent behind that wheel at that time was fairly limited, but even within that time frame, the car did not disappoint, on the contrary, we were quite impressed by its performance, design, luxury and the technology available.

We enjoyed the car so much that we worked our magic and received a short term loaner that we could drive around the beautiful Chicago area. Our plan was to use the car in different scenarios: as a daily driver, weekend and a family car. Also went the extra leg to “hire” one of my friends as a driver, so I can experience the new 7 from the rear-seat as well.

Has the car lived up to our expectations? Well, you will have to wait a few more days and we will tell you all about it. For now, we’re just teasing you a bit with some information and photos.

As far as dynamics, we’ve been through all the driving modes: Comfort, Normal, Sport and Sport +. Care to guess which one was most used? Comfort……nah…next….YES, Sport+, a pair of new wheels for the reader that got the right answer….okay, we’re just kidding now, but yes, Sport+ has been our favorite mode of driving the 7, most likely because we’re so used to riding in the 3 Series.

In Sport or Sport+, the ride becomes more dynamic, rough and….of course, sporty, perfect for those times when the road ahead of us was wide open and we felt more adventurous. Comfort was also between our top favorites, mostly because the City of Chicago streets are….let’s just say….not in the “best shape”. We heard some calling the Comfort mode as giving you a “boat” feeling, but we would say that the adjustments are just perfect and it does exactly what was designed to do: offer a more comfortable driving experience. Some will already jump ahead and compare it against the older 7, but fear nothing, we’re looking at total different cars.

The 4.4 liter V8 twin-turbo engine it does its job properly and maybe even beyond. At around 4,500 lbs, the 750i is far from being a compact car, but those 404 horsepower and the incredible 450 lb-ft of torque, make up for it and show the sportiness in this car. In the end, the 750i runs from still to 60 mph in around 5.1 seconds, pretty much where the 335i Sedan is rated as well.

We’ve been trying for days now to find some negative aspects and we’re not saying they don’t exist, but without having a comparable car in our garage for a longer test drive(Audi A8 or MB S-Class), it is really hard to accurately make a valid statement. But more on that in our full review….

As far as the design, it has definitely grown on us since the first time we saw the car at the L.A Auto Show and that “odd nose” doesn’t bother us anymore. We’ll talk more about the design cues very soon.

So, we hope we got your attention for a second and those of you that followed us on Twitter might have also seen our live tweeting during the test drive, including random photos.

Till next time!

Here is another teaser for those of us that live in the United States: the new Alpina B7 based on the F01 BMW 7 Series was spotted on Mt. Evans in Colorado. One of our readers, Craig R., was kind enough to share these photos with us and as he mentioned as well, the B7 prototype might have been used for high altitude testing.

A bit of background on the new B7: weighs 4,312 lb (1,960 kg), still lighter than the 750i or Li production models and it sits on some beautiful Alpina-style 21 inch wheels. It is powered by a V8 4.4 liter twin-turbo engine outputting 505 horsepower and an impressive 517 lb-ft (700Nm) reached at 4,750 rpm. Alpina B7 is a rear-wheel drive vehicle and it uses the automatic “SwitchTronic” gearbox.

All that power and balance needs to be kept in place, so Alpina packs the B7 with 245 and 285 tires.

Official testing show that the B7 runs from 0 to 62 mph in just 4.7 seconds and it is electronically limited at 174 mph (280km/h).

As expected, the fuel economy is not too great on the B7, official estimates place it at 13MPG (17 liter/100km) city driving, 27MPG (8.6 liter/100km) highway and combined at 20MPG (12 liter/100mk).

Now to tease you even more, after looking closely at these photos, based on the orange reflectors seen, the B7 seems to be a U.S. spec car. Could that imply that we are looking at the possibility of importing these cars in the U.S.? Well, we don’t know for sure yet, but we sent the question in and we’ll see what we will get in return.

No worries, you will be the first to know.

The 2010 Jaguar XJ was unveiled a few days ago and without a doubt, it will join the big boys ...

The 2010 Jaguar XJ was unveiled a few days ago and without a doubt, it will join the big boys – BMW 7 Series, MB S-Class, Lexus LS and Audi A8 – in the high-end sedan luxury market. Judging from the reactions seen on several auto media publications, the new XJ is really a huge step forward for the Coventry based Jaguar.

And to us, the BMW fans, the Jaguar XJ has proven to be a huge surprise and at the same time, it brought back the usual question: how will it stack against the BMW brand, more specifically against the new 7 Series? The exterior design of the new XJ has been revamped, renewed and it is quite appealing. Without a doubt its front-end design is one of the biggest improvements with the trapezoidal grille seen in the XF models and a more refined, elegant look.

The body sides are a bit more plain, with very few design lines or creases as you would see on the 7, but we do see some of their fans adoring that simplicity. The rear-end is unconventional and unseen in a Jaguar model before, with a tall vertical LED taillights that “climb” the trunk.

Inside, as seen in any Jaguar before, the amount of technology is overwhelming, but welcomed by many enthusiasts. The backlit in a blue color matches the overall design, a much sportier approach than we have seen before. The wood is less obvious before and has an interesting approach of wrapping around the dashboard. The round shapes seem to dominate the interior, from the circular air vents, to the control knobs and speakers.

An interesting thing that stood out in front of us is the touchscreen LCD screen which allows for input from the user, a feature that many BMW consumers have requested in their cars as well. Overall, a great interior design and this comes from someone that has been in-love with the 7 Series interior for the past week or so.

But let’s move forward onto an area where BMW has dominated its competitors: engines. The base engine is a naturally aspirated powerplant which produces 385 horsepower and 385 lb-ft of torque. The midlevel engine is supercharged and delivers 470 horsepower and 424 lb-ft. And if that wasn’t enough, Jaguar introduced a new super duper powerful engine: 510 horsepower and 461 lb-ft of torque. Official numbers rate this engine at 4.7 seconds when running from 0 to 60 mph.

The BMW 750i is powered by a 4.4 liter twin-turbo V8 engine which outputs 400 horsepower and 450 lb-ft of torque. The acceleration on the 750i from 0 to 60 mph is rated at 5.1-5.2 seconds.

The pricing was set accordingly to the performance and looks, so the entry level XJ starts at $72,500, midlevel model at $$87,500 and the high-end XJ Supersport at $112,000.

So, we’ve given you a quick background on the new Jaguar XJ, threw in some numbers as well, now we would like to hear your opinion on this: could the XJ really steal away some 7 Series customers? Can Jaguar match the dynamics and handling of a BMW 7 Series and most important, how is the visual aspect compares against the 7?

With all the recent BMW X1 news, we forgot to show you the most recent 7 Series M Sport Package photos.

M Sports Package featured for the first time in the BMW 7 Series.

The BMW 7 Series is characterized not only by its powerful design, supreme comfort and innovative features, but also by dynamic engines and superior suspension technology as well as fascinating, sporting performance. Indeed, no other sedan in the luxury segment offers such a dynamic driving experience of this calibre and quality.

Now this particular forte of the BMW 7 Series may be further accentuated for the first time by a BMW Sports Package setting further highlights both out-side and within the car for even greater Sheer Driving Pleasure and a truly unique look.

The M Sports Package comprises an Aerodynamics Package as well as additional chrome trim on the specially designed front and rear aprons, illuminated M entry trim and BMW Individual High-Gloss Shadow Line.

In combination with the M Sports Package, the customer also has the choice of exclusive paintwork in Carbon Black Metallic, apart from six other body colours all available as an alternative.

The dynamic look of the car is rounded off by 19-inch M light-alloy wheels in double-spoke design featuring different-sized tyres front and rear. As an option there are also 20-inch M light-alloy wheels in double-spoke design, again with different tyre sizes front and rear.
And last but not least, electronically controlled BMW Dynamic Drive also comes in the M Sports Package for the BMW 7 Series.

Sports seats with leather upholstery, the M leather steering wheel with multi-function buttons and the M footrest underline the active character of this luxury performance saloon also within the passenger compartment. BMW Individual roof lining in anthracite and interior trim in fine-grain aluminium round off the interior ambience with its focus on sporting performance.

The BMW 760i and the BMW 760Li, finally, come with BMW Individual roof lining in alcantara anthracite as well as high-quality wood trim.

The BMW M Sports Package is available for all models in the BMW 7 Series with both normal and extended wheelbase.
