BMW has just unveiled its second generation X4 SAC which goes on sale in July 2018. The new midsize crossover coupe builds atop the design of the first generation, but it adds some new design cues, especially at the rear end.

Its taillights are now slim and wide with what BMW calls “Three-Dimensional Shaping”. Built into the rear deck is a pretty large spoiler, which gives the X4 a distinctively sporty look, even on non performance models. Though, one can’t help but feel that it looks a bit too much like the Mercedes-Benz GLC-Class Coupe.

So with that in mind, we set out to visually compare the two premium Sport Activity Coupes.

An increase of 81 millimetres in exterior length to 4,752 millimetres, 54 millimetres added to the wheelbase (now 2,864 millimetres), an extra 37 millimetres of width (1,918 millimetres) and a 3-millimetre drop in height (to 1,621 millimetres) lend the all-new BMW X4 increased proportions compared to its predecessor.

The Mercedes-Benz GLC Coupe measure 4732 mm in length, 1890 mm in width, 2873 mm in wheelbase size and 1603 mm height.

So the two are nearly identical in shape and proportion, and now closer in design than ever.

While the exterior of the two cars are incredibly similar, the interior of both cars follow different philosophies. The BMW X4 carries over its sportiness to the inside, where things are simple and to the point. The quality is premium and the design is sharp, and in our opinion, more elegant and sportier than the first generation X4. The interior design carries over some of the cues seen in recent BMWs, giving the car an overall luxurious look.

The cabin of the GLC Coupe is a very different animal. The fit, finish and materials are all absolutely top notch, and aim to wow immediately the more conservative Mercedes owners. Touch anything, anywhere inside the cabin and you’re met with soft, rich materials, whether they be leather, wood or metal. It’s a wonderfully well done cabin, and the final choice between the two will come down to your personal preference.
