BMW i and iPerformance continue to drive the future. The BMW Group is the world’s third-largest manufacturer of electric vehicles and delivered over 62,000 electrified vehicles to customers last year, including more than 25,500 fully electric BMW i3s. With 2,864 new vehicle registrations in 2016 (+ 26%), the all-electric BMW i3 was the most successful electric vehicle in Germany.

In the first quarter of 2017, the company delivered almost 20,000 electrified models to customers around the world. The aim is to sell a total of 100,000 electrified vehicles worldwide this year.

Even if cars with a conventional drive still play the leading role today, there is no way around the change to cleaner and more sustainable solutions in the medium term. In order to be optimally prepared for this turnaround, the BMW Group has established itself as a designer of change, and today high market shares are already secured in a segment that will sooner or later overshadow conventional drives.

By 2025, the BMW Group expects electrified vehicles to account for between 15-25% of sales.

Even if market shares such as the current 22 percent of the electric cars in Germany, 27 percent in Norway or 17 percent in Europe can not be defended in the long term due to an ever increasing number of electric cars automakers, the BMW Group has already firmly established itself in an important growth market. Long before other premium cars have sold their first series electric car, the BMW i3 has already established itself as a pioneer and linked the issue of electric mobility in the minds of many potential customers of the future with the BMW brand.

In addition to the electric car i3, the BMW Group has now launched eight plug-in hybrids – BMW X1 xDrive25Le (only available in China), MINI Cooper SE Countryman, the BMW 225xe Active Tourer, the 330e, the 530e, the 740e and the X5 xDrive40e. Worldwide, BMW’s iPerformance division also has a market share of 20 percent among the plug-in hybrids, thanks to its broad offer, and 28 percent in Germany.

In the next five years, BMW plans to expand its i and iPerformance lineup, with new models like the i5, X3 electric SUV and a 3 Series with an electric drivetrain. Other iPerformnace models are planned as well.
