Rumors are constantly circulating about the next production vehicle from BMW’s now-famous i Division. It’s all but confirmed that the next BMW i vehicle will be the BMW i5. What exactly that will be is still unknown, though we have a pretty good idea. However, a possible recent leak shows BMW’s patents for the BMW i5 and we get a good look at what it will be.

In these patent images, we get a digital look at the upcoming BMW i5. It’s a lot like we expected it to be, but somewhat disappointing, to be honest. It clearly borrows a lot of its design from both the BMW i3 and i8, with the rear end being almost entirely i3 and the front end having a lot of i8 in it. However, it has the overall shape of a Toyota Prius and that’s not a good thing. Hopefully BMW’s joint-venture with Toyota isn’t rubbing off on the Bavarians too much.

While there are certain aspects of this patent car that look good, the overall design is not good. This does not look like the sort of premium vehicle BMW should be making and instead looks like something of a Toyota Prius/Chevy Bolt offspring. It also has Tesla Model S door handles. If BMW wants to get more people on board with the i Division, this design isn’t going to cut it.

We have no official word as to whether or not these patent designs are accurate, so don’t take them as fact. However, it isn’t impossible. But without anything confirmed, this is also just rumor. It also goes against the previous rumor we’ve heard about the i5 being an SUV. We won’t know for sure until at least 2020, though.

I hope not because it looks like one of their GT lineup car. Not feeling it at all.

The general trend for cars is to become more and more blob-like with every new design. Look at the Model X. It’s basically a van.

      • Me says:

        Technically it’s a van, too.

Rides on the same platform as a car, meant for families, has “sliding” doors, Musk confirmed styled to appeal to females (I’ve only seen soccer moms hauling kids around in X’s) …

        so yup, family van. ;)

  2. Fritz says:

I’m starting to wonder if another SUV/Crossover/MPV/GT–ish car is really necessary? I’d start with the electrification of the regular line up, and offer it as another engine option. (gasoline, diesel, hybrid, electric)

  3. Matt Stokes says:

This looks like a Prius the same way a 3 series looks like a Camry.

If you’re going to editorialise such opinions at least come up with a criticism that’s better thought out than the crap 1 line hate fests we get on ‘Post.

  4. John says:

    Rear-visibility? What’s that?

  5. CDspeed says:

The kidney grills are open suggesting a gasoline engine, and it looks like the rear passenger doors are coach doors. It does look like a Prius, so much so that you’d almost swear that it was a rebodied Prius. I think I’ll sit back, and hope this is a hoax.

  6. MrMicrochip says:

Okay now, somebody please explain why these cars are designed to be ugly?

  7. Me says:

Yawn… nothing but another rumor… need I remind folks of these other i5 patent leaks
